For a small station it has many things you need: bathrooms, charging stations even if not a ton, comfortable chairs, music (it was too loud and especially not fun if you don't like their choice of music), snack machines and drinks, trash bins, a kiosk for train schedules and to buy tickets, and live ticket agents. Plus free working WiFi with no password. The inside of the trains is another story ... not really clean ... the roommettes and sleeper cars are full of dust and carpet smells and needs a lot of updating bc the prices are not cheap for a tiny space w bunk beds. And the food is hit or miss... some trains have decent food and some just microwave a frozen breakfast that tastes worse than McDonalds. read more

For my first ever train ride with Amtrak it was a really positive experience. I ordered my tickets online so that was pretty smooth and once I got to the station the train came on time and we Departed in a timely fashion as well. Really enjoyed the tight schedule for the most part and I ultimately got to my final destination only about 10ish minutes late. If I'm traveling more in the future and I have the time to spare, I would definitely choose the train over plane purely for the leg room and ability to get up and walk around and just to take in the scenery too! I also like that there was charging stations a seat and you could recline a pretty generous amount as well. Definitely one of the most comfortable travel experiences I've had in a while. Depew Station specific details: it's not a large station, but there was a good amount of seating inside, and the rest room was clean as well. Parenting Fail: When you check all the calendars and buy tickets for Cav's games accordingly--only to miss on the school calendar that one game was on a band concert night. Ugh. But we decided to turn lemons into lemonade and head in separately to Cleveland, so dad-daughter-duo could catch the game, and mom-son-duo could go to the concert ... and then ride in on the Night Train!! #GNR ;-) To get from Buffalo to Cleveland from the Depew Station there is one ride a day ... and it is at 12:40AM. Good thing we are a family of night owls, we made it work. And for $62 for two tickets one way, it was definitely a better deal than driving a second car back and forth to Cleveland. I booked our train tickets via the Amtrak website, then downloaded the app to access my digital ticket. A benefit of the app is you are notified of any issues--and we had an issue. Our train was running just over an hour late. So instead of a 12:40am departure, we were looking at close to 2am. Sitting at the train station for extra time with a 12 year old in the wee hours was avoided though, because the app kept ups accurately informed of our train times. We got to the station about an hour early of the adjusted time. The Depew station is small, but it was bright, clean and comfortable. The ticket window was staffed and helping people as needed. There is basic vending options, and a hot beverage machine. There was plenty of seating for crowd of maybe a couple dozen to spread out with all of our baggage. When the train arrived, my son and I were allowed to board first since I was traveling with children. We got in the coach boxcar and quickly found a seat among the many options on the fairly empty train. The double seats are HUGE with TONS of legroom. It was almost too much legroom! I like resting my knees on the back of the seat, and this is definitely not possible in these roomy seats. My son immediately passed out. I wanted to enjoy a bit of the ride, and decided to take out my Chromebook to do some Yelping. But unfortunately I could not connect neither my phone nor my Chromebook to the free WiFi. My devices found the WiFi without issue, and I monkeyed with the configurations as best I could, but could not connect. After trying a while, I gave up and joined the nap club too. The train ride was smooth enough and arrived in Cleveland by a bit after 5am, which is the expected duration of about three hours and fifteen minutes. So had the train been on time, barring any issues along the way, the time to travel the distance was as planned. Overall I enjoyed our train ride! The cost was very reasonable. The station and train itself were clean and comfortable. I docked a star due to the late arrival and the lack of WiFi on the train. Otherwise, as long as I don't have a tight turnaround for time, I would definitely take the Amtrak train out of Depew again. I look forward to the next time we can be ALL ABOARD! :-D read more

The station is nothing special, but it's nice and calm and there is free parking which is super useful if you're commuting. Amtrak as a whole is a mixed bag. I definitely wouldn't take it if I had some strict timelines and deadlines as trains are often late and delayed as freight has priority in the US track. It's abysmal if you're used to traveling by train in most of Europe where trains are on-the-dot on time. If the schedule says it's arriving at 6:11 in Europe, it will be there then and depart on the minute. Not so with Amtrak or train travel in the US, but it's nice and calm and there is free wifi. Wifi generally works better, in my experience on the train than on a bus, so it's useful to get some work done. Seats are comfortable and there is usually plenty of space so you have both seats to yourself if you're doing a short stint (i.e. Buffalo to Syracuse). The station has limited amenities; a couple vending machines for coffee and snacks and bathrooms, so nothing fancy -- but free parking! read more

The Depew Amtrak station definitely needs some renovations, but this isn't too different from many other Amtrak stations. Overall, the station is clean and the attendants are super helpful and nice. There are lots of seats and free parking too, if you can get a spot that is. I've waited in this train station a few times and have never felt unsafe. Compared to other train stations, this one does not have sketchy people hanging around, so that's a perk too. My most recent trip out of here was an overnight train to Chicago, followed by many more stops on the California Zephyr all the way to San Francisco. Going cross-country I can tell you this, train is by far the most comfortable and scenic mode of transportation you can take, booking tickets in advance saves you a lot of money too. I would highly recommend traveling by train and departing from this station would be a good start to your trip. :) read more

Picked my friend up from here on his way back from Albany. He recommends the train for any traveling within the state. They let you go out while people are unloading and loading to say your hellos and goodbyes. Snack/pop machines. I wouldn't hesitate to book a train trip through Amtrak. read more

I've traveled in and out of this station for well over 10 years and I much prefer it to the Exchange Street station. The station is generally clean and comfortable while you're waiting and the people at the service window are pleasant and helpful. If you are using an e-ticket then you actually don't even have to talk to anyone at the window, though I typically check in to make sure everything is on time and there are no issues. There is also a ticket machine in the building. Because I tend to take trains that originate in Canada, customs often causes delays but that obviously isn't something that this particular station can do anything about. They do a nice job of keeping everyone updated. The bathrooms are clean enough, so if you want to make a stop before hitting the tracks, it's not the worst place. The one thing that can be a pain is parking. The lot isn't huge so you want to leave plenty of time in case you have to park in a different lot and walk back. When possible, avoid driving yourself. I've never had a problem leaving my car, but it doesn't mean I like doing it. read more

The best thing about dechurch is depew. You know what I mean? I don't have a one track mind, I have an Amtrak mind. I feel bad because I once left my friend from England sleeping in this station for ages. Sometimes I wish I could go back and undo some of the annoying things I did in the past. But I've tried to make up for them and I won't do them in the future if I can help it. I don't have much to say about Depew Train Station except that it's been the beginning of many wonderful journeys for me... riding the train to NYC or wherever is so much more comfortable than the Greyhound bus, and this is a lovely little station with an open platform that you can access without even going inside... it's 24 hours... tickets are relatively cheap for the luxuriousness of the journey... all in all I highly recommend this station and travelling by train in general. read more

It's great. I don't enjoy flying one bit, so when I go upstate, I take the Empire Service Line from Yonkers to Depew. Splendid scenic views along the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. Moves along the rails reasonably fast, but periodically has to stop to allow freight trains to pass. read more

Have taken short trip to NYC and left a car in the parking lot for a few days with no problems. You can get a parking pass from the window when you check in. But we have also parked without a pass for several days when travelling one-way and had no problems. There are two lots -- one on either side of the station building. read more

This is your typical small-town train station. Fairly small, outdated waiting room, with floors that have decades of grime that will never be polished out. But ultimately, it's not the station you're spending hours in, it's the train. The ticketmaster behind the glass was grouchy -after reading other review, must have just been that he was having a bad day. But his behavior was unprofessional. After a rudimentary greeting to me, he continued to talk under his breath about the previous customer who had caused some hubbub. Something about too many carry-on bags... After waiting only a half hour, the train was right on time. Waiting outside for the last 15 minutes was the highlight of the train station visit. Once on the train, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were plenty of seats available and was fortunate to have both the window and aisle seat all to myself the entire ride to Penn Station. Granted, it was Thursday morning, 9am, but still, would've thought there'd have been some commuter traffic in Utica or Albany. The staff was pleasant and helpful in handing up my baggage to me and directing me to the right car. The cafe car was clean and well-attended, though a bit mediocre in food selection. And if you happen to be on a diet or a health kick, forget about it -just pack your own snacks. The only healthy food they have is Greek yogurt (yum!) and very expensive fresh fruit ($1 for one banana). The cafe car staff was mediocre as well. I had a Tim Horton's cup that I had some tea in earlier when I first got on the train. I asked the attendant if he could just fill it up with some more hot tea, so as to save a cup. He said it was against the rules, something about counting the number of cups and tea bags that are sold each day. Fine, I'll go with it. But I still wanted to be able to recycle my TH cup, as well as the cardboard sleeve. "No recycling on board." Well, ok then. Amtrak is a bit antiquated as far as being "green". I saw how much cardboard, plastic and paper was being thrown away, from the danish wrappings to the microwavable pizza containers. It's a shame. Ok, rest of the ride to NYC was great. On the way home, that Sunday, well that was another story! The staff was particularly rude and unaccommodating. Everyone nearby me in my car noticed as well. All of a sudden in Utica, at 11pm, there was assigned seating -the train attendant went around and collapsed foot rests of passengers who were sleeping to get them to move to their "correct seat". The train was packed from the moment we left Penn right up until Buffalo. In fact, when we stopped in Rochester at 2:30am, another two dozen passengers boarded!! My advice if you're traveling late at night: bring noise-cancelling earphones (because there's always That Guy who is on board to make friends and chatter the whole night), a warm blanket, a pillow and some back support, as well as a smartphone or an iPod with a never-ending music playlist -there is no Wifi!! The AC was blasting from the moment we left Penn. Numerous passengers asked the conductor to turn it down but because it was located on the OUTSIDE of the train, the answer was 'no'. I kid you not, it had to have been 50 degrees. My lips turned blue about 3 hours into the trip. Around 9pm the "heat" came on -you could only feel the benefits of this so-called heat if you were sitting in a window seat and had your bare leg pressed between the chair and the floorboard vent, something that becomes very uncomfortable after 45 minutes. We arrived in Buffalo 3 hours later than originally scheduled, due to numerous slow-downs and pull-overs to let other trains pass. Because Amtrak doesn't own the rights of the railroad tracks, we don't have right away and therefore must let cargo trains pass, hence the many 30-minute stops in the middle of nowhere. Bottom line, if you have an additional $100, spend it on airfare and enjoy the 56 minute plane trip to NYC, rather than the 12 hour ride-from-hell in the refrigerated section of Amtrak. read more

On the date I'm writing this review, the taxi fare cost from this train station to buffalo airport is $15. If you are planning to visit the Niagara Falls, you may not need to rent the car. I take the train from Buffalo to pick up family in Albany (and drive them back to Buffalo!) every few months and really love the convenience of this station. It's a suburban Amtrak set off of Dick Road where you would never think to find it. The price for a trip to Albany is very affordable ($67 this time) and you get to sit back on a Saturday morning, relax, read the paper, drink coffee, and do productive things (read: write this Yelp review) and not have to drive across the state! The station itself is fine - it's your basic old waiting room but I've never seen it too hot or too cold in summer / winter. There are vending machines for soda, coffee, snacks, and the paper so you can grab something before you get on the train (or you can use the cafe car on the train!) The ticket people are always wicked nice. I order my ticket online the night before the train and they will print it for me before the trip. The train from Buffalo is usually pretty empty and I've always been able to get an entire two-seat-row to myself. There is AC Power for laptops and WiFi for all your electronic devices. NOTE: the WiFi has limits to downloads and at least check you can't watch Netflix, streaming services. It can be spotty but has been improving. The service at the cafe car is fine, and the food is standard-not so great but not terrible train faire. The bathrooms are clean. The cars have never been anything but quiet (I travel in the a.m. and half the people are asleep). Another note - the parking lot at this (Depew) station fills up! Both the station and the lot are undergoing renovations at the moment (08/2012) so it's even tighter. I'm hoping the renovations include better parking. I've never had an worries about parking my car there for a day / overnight, but just an FYI that it gets full and you may have to park on the side of the grass. All in all, I'm happy that this is here, is convenient, and is a great, cheap way to travel when you don't want to drive. These Saturday mornings (train leaves at 7:30 from Buffalo and gets to Albany at about 1pm) are wicked productive and I get a ton of work (and reading) done. read more

I decided to amtrak it to Syracuse this past weekend. Hell, it's $35 each way, makes only one stop (in Roch) and takes 2 1/2 hours. Nearly quicker than driving, and gives me time to do sudoko and read an entire book. The parking lot sucks (not enough spaces), the station smells like urine (and don't even go in the restrooms) and the other passengers can be a bit...interesting. Overall, a good trip but I HATE that the train takes FOREVER to NYC. Otherwise, I'd take it more often. read more

I have been through Depew many times and they finally have a tv and fixed the chairs. WIFI would be nice. Evenness is really nice there. The washrooms are not the nicest, bring hand sanitizer, they are always dirty. Be prepared to bring snacks and reading material. There are outlets for charging phones. read more

It does the job. Not the fanciest, but unfortunately, our rail systems are underfunded. What's important to me is that it is a 24-hour station, and it has free parking. These things make it easier for me to travel with Amtrak from the Buffalo area. I just visited Buffalo from New York and both the Amtrak ride to Buffalo and the one back to New York were excellent. Leaving from Grand Central in Manhattan and arriving at Dick Rd in Depew offered quite the contrast and actually reflects the difference between the two cities well. The train ride back to NYC last night got to Albany early; as the conductor announced, "The words Amtrak and early are rarely heard in the same sentence." It's good to know it can happen. The conductors, the servers in the café car, and those assisting people getting on and off the train were all courteous and upbeat. Traveling by train was very relaxing, and relatively inexpensive, especially compared to what one has to endure at airports these days. As long as I have the time, I plan to travel by train. read more

The joy of travel! For the first time in a decade, my family and I took a train trip, more specifically, a roundtrip journey on the Lake Shore Limited from Buffalo to Chicago. We found a parking spot very close to the east side of the station but if that lot had been full, we would have been able to find parking on the west side, which rarely fills up. Staff members at the station and on the trains were superb -- friendly, easy-going, and willing to go out of their way to deliver top-notch service. Check-in was easy -- an employee merely scanned our e-ticket and we were all set. Our coach-class seats were big and roomy -- far more comfortable and spacious than most first-class seats on planes and the stewards gave each passenger a free pillow. We ate breakfast (scrambled eggs, croissants, pancakes, orange juice, and homestyle potatoes) in the dining car, The food was wonderful, especially the seasoning on the potatoes. Our train left Depew at midnight and arrived EARLY at Union Station in Chicago the next morning. We took the 9:45 pm train back to Depew and arrived on time. Finally, since we bought our tickets 3 months in advance, the cost was minimal -- far less than a ticket for a bus or plane, or if we had taken our car, and because of Amtrak's double reward special, we received double guest rewards points. Given how nightmarish air travel can be these days, I'm grateful Amtrak is providing travelers with a pleasant and affordable alternative. read more

We took a train from Depew to NYC on Thanksgiving. The wifi wasn't working and an announcement was made that the wifi would be down for the duration of the 8 hour ride. This was a big disappointment. This made for a boring ride. Then they made an announcement that they had issues with the signals and we would be traveling very slowly for awhile. By slowly, they meant at the pace of a snail. This delayed us a lot. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. The smell of urine was intoxicating. Next time I'll take a plane! read more
