I've visited this park twice now, in 2024, and it's been a lovely gentle flat paved walk for my family. Excellent for strollers in most places unless you want to get off the beaten path! Parking is paid via honor system (cash or online). There is a medium small size lot. Men and women bathrooms are at the trailhead. There are some places where you can get off the trail and into the river itself as well as a boardwalk where you can explore a bit more of the other small habitats. read more

Great new park discovered and happens to be training grounds for group runs of some of members of the Atlanta Track Club's Masters Elite field whom I met both days for group runs totaling 10 and 14 miles on the weekend. The park has many trails that lead into the hills but you can also remain on flat surfaces for nearly 6 miles in one direction (you have to run on Commons Drive 2.5 miles on the road, then enter the next park) and is bordered by the Chattahoochee River which folks were already floating down to escape the summer heat. Entry fees have been suspended for parking during Covid 19 times. So it's first come first serve at the moment. By 9-10am the parking lot was mostly full on both days. read more

Really I hadn't had any plans to go to Cochran Shoals Trail, but when a friend of mine called and asked if I wanted to visit another park, I jumped all over it. Depending on who you ask, Cochran Shoals trail has varying lengths as short as 2 miles but as large as 6. The trail does move alongside the western portion of the Chattahoochee river, is flat, and there's even a loop back to the main trail that makes for a nice little 5k Several runners come here for the mostly forgiving terrain and nice scenery of the river. Either side of the trail has its own parking lot and restrooms so if you find yourself at the midway point and nature calls, they've got you covered. Bike rentals are available near the start of the trail, at least on the side closest to Interstate North Pkwy. For reference this is just to the left of the pay station. Also along the way there are a few observation decks for river watching, and you can make out stairs and other features on the opposite side of the river shore. When we went it was a Thursday afternoon right at noon, and while the park was alive with people, the parking spots were easy to find and people kept to themselves. You can get to Cochran shoals from 285 (taking exit 22) and finding your way to interstate North Pkwy. This is the way I came. The other side of the park can be found off of 152 columns drive. Cochran shoals is a great park to get a run in, a bike ride in, or to just hang out and chill off of the river. With parking lots on both sides of the park, and connecting trails off of Cochran shoals, you can have a great time no matter what your goal is. Get outdoors and enjoy! read more

Went on a walk here on Tuesday, 4/11/23 around 1:45 pm. For a weekday, I was surprised with how many people there were! It wasn't overly packed though and we had plenty of room to walk. The main path is gravel and stroller-friendly! Plenty of parking, for a weekday. I will definitely go back!! read more

This place is easily accessible from 285. We went on a Friday it was pretty busy but the main trails are very wide. So there was still plenty of space. Usually they ask u to pay for parking which is $5 but not the machine was broken. We walked on the unpaved and paved areas. Didn't come across any dangerous wildlife but we did see tadpoles. It was a great and relaxing experience. One of my favorite places to walk. This is a great place to walk if u are wanting to switch it up. This trail is in a convenient spot right off powers ferry. I've never gotten to the end of it but can tell it's a nice lengthy trail even for seasoned runners. Depending on the time of day you go it can get crowded, but there's still enough space to keep you isolated. Being next to the river gives it a calm vibe. What's neat about the Cochran Shoals trail is it's minutes away from the city, just outside the perimeter (I-285), on the Chattahoochee River. Walking the trail, you'd never think you're still in Atlanta, but you are. That said, I thought our walk on this trail was okay. It's good for a leisurely walk and not "real hiking" as some of my friends put it. Therefore, the difficulty is minimal or non-existent. We parked at the Columns Drive parking lot located at: 168 Columns Drive Marietta, GA 30067 Some of the houses on the way to the parking lot are pretty impressive. When you enter the park, there's a pay station. It costs $3 for a daily parking pass or $35 for an annual parking pass. The station accepts both cash and cards. There are male and female restrooms at the parking lot. This is one of the less scenic trails I've been on, but we also didn't walk the whole thing. Our walk started out on a wide, open, gravel/dirt path. It was tree-lined, but still had plenty of exposure to the sun. This trail also has another path that is completely out in the open with 100% exposure to the sun. I prefer tree-covered trails in the woods. We eventually made our way to the tree-covered trails. They have posts staggered in a way that prevents bikers from getting on these trails, but the bikers still manage to find their way onto them. The dirt trails in the woods can get rather narrow and if a biker comes, you'll have to scoot out of the way. There's not much to mention in terms of scenery. Part of the trail we walked paralleled a creek with lots of large rocks and stones. That's about it. The rest was pretty much woods. In the open area of the trail, I do remember a fairly substantial bridge. It's actually close to the trailhead. Some quick facts from the info board at the trailhead: Trail length: 1.7 miles Typical grade: 6.4% Typical cross slope: 3.8% Typical tread width: 41 inches In summary, I didn't think this particular trail was all that exciting, but it's not bad if you just want to have a nice walk with friends, family, and/or pets, surrounded by nature, on a trail that isn't a far drive from the city. Frankly, I'd rather be playing golf at Atlanta Country Club nearby. :) read more

First off, best place for runners hands down, out of all the running options in Georgia. I was introduced to this place back in 2012, and have been coming here ever since. It's located off New Northside Dr on 285, exit 22. You'll have to take the lower bridge that runs parallel to 285 to get here. There are two parking lots, with the main lot full by 7:45am most weekends. The secondary lot is across the bridge and boasts a secondary trail loop (we call it Bamboo) plus a newly renovated bathroom facility. The secondary trail is very narrow and rugged on this side. The fee is $3 but you can buy an annual pass for $35. The pass is good for most park areas along the hooch. It's normally an honor system but they will ticket you (at that point, you have to buy an annual pass, which is your ticket fee so it's still a win). Make sure you display your pass on dashboard! The main part of Cochran Shoals has a 3 mile trail loop that is insanely wide, gravel, and has beautiful views alongside the river. During the summer months, a lot of runners will get in the river after the run for an ice bath. There are non freezing water fountains on both sides of the loop. There are also rugged side trails off the Cochran shoals loop for extreme mountain bikes and to run on. The main loop is flat on the front side and only one hill on the backside. Cochran shoals also connects to the Bob Callan paved trail (that's roughly about 3 miles long and very hilly) and to Columns Dr, which goes out to Johnson Ferry Rd. The Columns Drive parking lot is smaller but has a bigger bathroom. Columns is also ideal for tempos or interval speed work. It's exactly 2.5 miles from start to end. If you take Columns Dr all the way down to Johnson Ferry, you can cross the road utilizing the underpass (goes under Johnson Ferry) and go into the park area there for more flat trail running (be careful, many roots to trip on). Columns also has beautiful houses to check out and a bikers lane on both sides of the road. I'd highly recommend this area for runners, walkers, bikers or just to get out. This review is for the hiking trails located in the Interstate North section of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Cochran Shoals unit (there are actually four parts to the Cochran Shoals unit). Access is off Interstate North Parkway just west of the river. The sign at the access road says 1615 Interstate Pkwy but that won't get you here on Google maps. The main trail - the 'Cochran Shoals' trail - a flat and wide path running along the river, is fine for walking, running and strolling, but I was interested in the newer dirt trails located in the western section of this unit. The trailhead is located about half a mile north from the parking lot - the first marked trail to the left. [ETA: I see that Google maps labels this trail as part of the Cochran Shoals trail, but I don't think it is and I don't think people see it that way. The Cochran Shoals trail runs up to the Columns Drive parking lot and back.] You'll immediately find yourself on a boardwalk running through a swampy wetland. Ominously, there's a sign at the beginning stating that an alligator has been seen in these parts. If you survive the alligator attacks, in a few hundred yards the boardwalk will dump you off onto a very unimproved dirt/mud trail. From there, things get a little less structured. This part of the park is not well marked by the usual park service map you find at all the other places. Sure, there are signs with maps, but not as many as there are trail decision points. I followed the topography. Most of this area is much like the other trails in the NRA - nice hills, trees and plants typical of this part of Georgia. But one section is different. Between CS24 and CS26, if you're keeping track on the map, the trail runs along a petroleum pipeline right-of-way. I know, that doesn't sound cool, but it is. You're walking along a wide swath of land cleared of any trees or large plants, and this just after coming out of a forest. The view down pipeline to the river/wetland is pretty great. read more

My new favorite running trail has got to be Cochran Shoals Trail (after starting up this running habit a couple weeks ago). Located a little farther from me, I love to come here on the weekends for a brisk walk or a leisurely jog. There is $3 parking fee, but at least you know it's going to the park. I believe there is an option for an annual pass, which may be worth it if you go at least once a month. There are two lots (one over the bridge) for parking. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the main lot was packed, but the lot over the bridge was empty. Take advantage of it and the brief walk to the main trailhead. The trail is quiet, not TOO crowded, and a great nature walk. It's not hardcore but it's easy and predictable. I enjoy stability. The sunset is BEAUTIFUL over the Chattahoochee. I happened across an unabashed deer while running one afternoon. I stood there taking photos and video and he stared right back at me. It's just a couple loops, yes, but there are also hiking trails for those more adventurous. The view on the main trail doesn't bore me, though. This is also dangerously close to Heirloom BBQ and Chattahoochee Coffee Company. Just saying. read more

This is a beautiful trail that runs along the Chattahoochee River off 285. It's wide enough to socially distance and most people are masked and courteous of others along the trail. Parking is ample and easy to get to from the interstate. Even though the trail is flat, with a brisk pace, a good workout can be enjoyed outdoors with fresh air. Highly recommended! read more

I love this place! The first thing you need to know is that there are two sides of the park. If you're coming from 75 off of interstate north parkway south east, the first entrance to the park before you cross the river has a great packed dirt trail with some gravel areas. There are also plenty of bike paths and some hiking trails up the hills in the park (they're usually pretty muddy though so come prepared). Most of the walk along the packed dirt path has a river view and there are some small docks that overhang the river that you can go and stand on. I've even seen some people entering the river here and wading during the summer. There is also a walking path on this side that goes under 285 along the river, but I haven't ventured that far yet. On the other side of the river at the second entrance is where many kayaking/canoeing/tubing excursions put in their water crafts. There is also, however some trails on this side as well. They're a little more rugged and are often blocked by fallen trees of here is a bad storm. This is the side where I like to hang up my hammock and read along the water front. The trails are much less crowded and you really feel like you're in nature without walking too far from your car. Both sides have maps at the beginning of their trails! Make sure you check them out so you have a heads up as to what you're getting yourself into before you venture further away from civilization. read more

I have been running here a few times a week in the morning for almost 2 years. The thing I LOVE about this trail is that there always people on it. Its a wooded trail and it can feel scary to run alone. The parking is NOT free. It's $3/day or $35/year. I pay for the annual pass since I come so often. On the weekends it is quite crowded and parking can be hard to come by. I recommend coming early in the morning. The trail is dirt, grass and pine straw. It is mostly flat and soft/firm. There are bathrooms at the start and 1.5 mile mark. There is a water fountain and trash can at the .75 mile mark. I choose to run by the river so I normally run from the Interstate North entrance where I park to the end at Columns Drive and turn around instead of taking the backside trail. Sometimes I continue to run onto Columns drive or at Interstate North, I run through the parking lot and under the highway to Powers Ferry or onto to add some distance to my runs. Overall this is one of my favorite ATL trails. I love being able to look at the river in the morning and there are lots of friendly people on the trails. read more

I love hiking, especially nature trails. One of my friends, Jessica S comes to Cochran Shoals Trail frequently and lives nearby. Since I am not familiar with the area, I drove by her place so we both could ride together. There are two parking lots but we were fortunate to find parking in the smaller, busier lot. The trail is really wide and it is packed. It follows the Chattahoochee River to the right. Jessica knew I would enjoy the nature scene so we took a turn on the left to the more narrow trails with beautiful scenic views. The trail we took us high and I was quite impress. I definitely didn't need to run since it was strenuous. We made a loop around and didn't realize how high up we were. While carefully trying to walk down, we saw interesting plants and bugs. It was a good 3 miles overall that we did, thanks to her phone app. I would like to go back and check out the other nature trails in the future since I know where it is now. This is my favorite place to run in Atlanta. It's a trail, so it's easier on the joints. It's mostly flat, but there are a few little hills, so it's good for easy runs and easing yourself in. It's scenic (river, woods, meadow), so you never get bored. Each quarter mile is marked so you can do sets and/or repeats not on a track. There are bathrooms and water fountains at each parking lot. And if you're just hanging out, there's a nice little nature walk through the marshy area. It's a good spot for birdwatching (indigo buntings!). There are little platforms over the river. I absolutely love going to Cochran shoals trial. I grew up in the country so as much as I love all the conveniences the city has to offer, I miss the country at times. This gives me the luxury to get away from all the hustle of the city, especially the traffic. (Well I should say once you get there.) Cochran Shoals Trail is approximately a 3 mile loop that runs along the river and circles back. There are parking lots at both ends of the trail, which if you plan on going there often you would be better off buying an annual pass for $35, versus paying $3 every time you go there. The trail also has a lot of single track paths that branch off in different directions that you can hike, run or mountain bike of some. These paths are a great place to get away from the sometimes crowded loop. The single track trails are definitely more technical, so if you are wanting just a easy day, stay to the loop. The true beauty of this place happens just as night fall is happening, most of the people are funneling to their cars to head home and that is when the wildlife comes out. This is a great place to see deer, in fact the last time I was there I saw 15 deer while running the big loop twice. Talk about up close and personal, you can't get any better than that. If you want to get away or have kids that do not get to see things like this, you should absolutely make an evening at the Cochran Shoals Trail. read more

Hiking hasn't happened since I got pregnant but now that our little dude is growing up, I hope I can ease back into it. I came here with a good friend for an easy jog at her suggestion. Prior to coming to Cochran Shoals Trail, I had not visited many trails in the metro Atlanta area and was pretty excited to see how it was to hike along the Chattahoochee River. Parking wasn't a problem and after I paid, I found my friend and we started off. It was early summer and I noticed tons of mosquitos. I abhor mosquitos, mostly because they love me. I cannot avoid getting massacred when I go outside during 60-plus-degree weather. Ugh. I generally hate the idea of playing "Creator" by messing with ecological balance and whatnot, but damn it, I make an exception when it comes to mosquitos. Death to them all! Okay, back to Cochran Shoals. The trail is swampy in some areas, which results in standing puddles, safe havens and breeding grounds for the vile, bloodsucking insects. If you are a walking bullseye for mosquitos like I am and plan to go during warm weather, make sure to use some bug spray or another type of repellant. Fortunately for the Trail, the view is easy on the eyes, which makes traversing it quite enjoyable. I knock a star off for all the mosquitos, which means I can only come back when the weather is cooler. Hello, gorgeous. I love this trail. I've grown up accessing it from the Columns Drive end, but more recently entered via the side closest to 285. The trail is nice and flat so unless you're running it's not much of a workout, but the beautiful scenery will make you want to go slowly anyway. The vast majority of the trail is set along the river and just seeing the water poke through the trees will cause your heart rate to drop. Parking is $3 (or $25 for a year pass, which I'm about to get) and I have seen them enforce it, especially on the Columns Drive end. It gets crowded on beautiful weekends, but it's understandable: how lucky are we to have a wetland walkway so close to home? read more

So the very last thing we thought about when moving out of the Highlands and into the Vinings area were the lack of flat running areas. Due to us residing at the bottom of a mountain it makes running quite difficult sometimes. So after searching local running trails and parks we fell across the Cochran Shoals park. The Cochran Shoals park and trail is located near 285 and Northside Dr. Cochran Shoals is actually connected to the Soap Creek trail in Marietta. There are several parking areas, all of which involve a minimal parking fee. While the parking fee isn't enforced, if you're one who enjoys visiting these parks then it's worth your money to help them keep the park looking nice. Cochran Shoals is a part of the National Park Service and you're able to find running, biking, and hiking trails online. The trail has mile markers along the way and it is very flat. The thing I liked most about the trail is that you're running alongside the Chattahoochee River and you have the opportunity to see all sorts of wildlife. Also, the trail is shaded really well which is a huge plus in the Georgia summer. I definitely recommend checking out this trail! read more

Hmm I liked it, but I don't know if I can say I'm a fan yet. I hate working out in a gym, so on the weekends, I try and get outdoors as much as possible and work my way through the hiking trails that are reasonably close to the city. Stone Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, and Arabia Mountain are all favorites, and I was hoping to add Cochran Shoals to the list, as it's even more conveniently located than my other favorites. As others have mentioned, if you don't have a National Park Yearly Pass, parking is $3. Certainly reasonable, and the machine actually only takes credit cards, making it easy on those of us who never carry cash anymore. On the day I visited, the most popular activity was tubing or kayaking on the river, and this looks like an excellent starting place for those activities. However, I was there to hike/walk/run. Other reviewers mention the well marked trails, and on that, I feel like we must have visited different parks. Visitors have cut numerous unauthorized paths through the forest (sometimes coming off of official trails), and the official trails are not color blazed, so it's difficult to tell which path you're supposed to be on. There are also no mile markers either on the trails or designated on the maps. The biggest loop is 9 miles, but I couldn't find any markers or maps to help me figure out how to piece together sections for a shorter route. Additionally, some of those trails leave the National Forest grounds, and they were confusingly marked in such a way that I couldn't figure out of I would be trespassing if I continued. The scenery is beautiful, but you have to get about a mile in before the sound of the unnerving buzz of the cars from 285 goes away. After that point, you do feel quite removed from the city. read more

Something about this trail makes me think of Central Park, or other big city parks. I think it's how flat and well-maintained it is. At any rate, this is my favorite park for an easy run. There's a 5K loop that starts at the entrance closest to 285 off Interstate Parkway North and goes right along the river for most of it. The river is really wide and open at this section and you get a real sense for how big a river we actually have here. The loop then goes around to the other parking lot, follows some gentle slopes and then comes back around to the main trail. There's also a smaller 2 mile loop starting at the second parking lot if you want an even shorter run or walk, as well as smaller trails that go off into some woods and into a swampy marsh, if you feel like exploring. There are even bridge walkways that go through the marsh that make you feel like you're in the everglades. And if you're feeling ambitious, the main trail connects up to other trails attached to parks further north. It's a great park for an easy but lovely run, or some leisurely exploring. read more

I love running here. Always plenty of people with dogs, on bikes, walking, and running. There are trails off the beaten path. I did a 5 mile loop on one of them that was difficult, but good for me. I definitely need to do more of it, because I can see how it can be good for strengthening. So scenic, bathrooms, water fountains, and lots of active people. This is one of my favorite trails around the city. There is a gravel path that include a loops along side the Chattahoochee River. Pretty flat trail with the exception of some small hills on the back side of the loop. Take a look at the map for the 5K route. Parking can get hectic during peak hours but there is another lot across the river. You can walk from there to get back to the trail. Bike friendly, kid friendly, pet friendly. I've also seen a few bird watchers and fishermen on occasion. read more

After a long 2 days at the Atlanta pen show this trail was a nice escape in the woods. While still in ear shot of the rumblings on I 285 I found the trail well maintained and an easy walk. I Was disappointed to find several bags of dog crap on the trail. If your gonna pick it up take it out don't leave a bag on the trail that will never decompose read more

Overall this is a lovely park. The scenery is great, the trails are challenging, and the parking is adequate. This only gets 1 star for 4 reasons. One reason is the parking fee. Most trails I've walked on that were bigger, have free parking, so charging people to park their cars is a little funky. The second reason is there aren't any resting areas such as benches and bathrooms on or near any of the longer trails. Usually, with professional trials they put in rest stops on trails that are more than a mile long. I know there are some who are people hardcore hikers/bikers that can go up to 5 miles without a break, but most normal people and beginners can't do that and need a breather. The third reason is there aren't any garbage cans near any of the trails. I understand that normal garbage cans can easily get knocked over or ransacked by wild animals. However part of the reason why there's so much litter on the trails is because there aren't any trash cans. Let's say you're eating an energy bar while hiking, but you have nowhere to put the wrapper except your back pack. Sad to say most people are lazy and don't want garbage in their bag. There are cast iron or hard plastic garbage cans with flaps and lids that only humans can use. Most professional hiking trails would have those near resting areas, if this park had any. The fourth and biggest reason of all is ALL OF THE FUCKING HORSE SHIT!!! It's everywhere, and the worst part is it's all right on the walking/biking trails. I don't know how well the park rangers maintain those trails, but something needs to be done about all that horse shit. Every weekend my mom and I walk on that trail, and every time there's some form of horse shit on the trails. I've stepped in some at leat twice, and you don't want to know how hard it is to clean horse shit off of hiking boots. I don't know who's job it is to maintain the trails but one of two things has to happen. One is the park rangers have to start getting off of their lazy asses and clean up all that horse shit on the trails, or at least push it off to the side away from the trails. Two is the people who walk their horses on the trails need to either buy one of those butt bags and have the horse poop in that, or take some responsibility and realize that other people use those trails for walking and bike riding and clean up after their damn horses. That's like if the busboys/girls of a restaurant left the dirty dishes on the table and made the customers wash them and wipe the tables! Any restaurant that did that would have zero customers, and the same principle applies to public parks. You may be thinking this is an unfair criticism, but it's completely fair. Like I said, every time my mom and I walk that trail I have to clean off the horse shit. So unless the park owner is willing to pay me for maintenance, I shouldn't have to be the one to do it. You may also be thinking, "why don't you just step around it?" First of all those trails are narrow as hell, so it's impossible for more than one person to be on the trail. Second of all horse shit is huge, so stepping around it without falling off of the edge is very dangerous. Also those trails in general are very unkept with all the jagged rocks, pine cones, and tree roots everywhere. Call me a spoiled little princess all you want but I've walked on a lot of professional trails and all of them keep their trails clean and free from any major tripping hazards. I almost sprained my ankle when I accidentally stepped on a large rock that was protruding from the ground. So my final result is if the park rangers could stop being lazy and do some basic maintenance, and the horse riders could stop being so irresponsible and clean up after their damn animals, then this would park would get at leat 4 stars. But until they get their shit together, literally, this park only gets 1 star from me. read more

Great for running biking or walking. Limited incline so you can get a fast paced workout in without fighting the Georgia hills and mountains. Great scenery and path across the water. read more

Back in the woods on the hill there are limited.bike trails so if you are walking and can stick to a trail that does not allow bikes, the bikers would appreciate it! read more

I'd give it 5 stars but my lab Hank got eaten by an alligator there last week. Everything else about the park is great.

This is one of my favorite walking/running/biking trails along the Chattahoochee river. Beautiful scenery. It can get very crowded on the weekends during spring and fall when the weather is nice. You can bring your dog on a leash too. read more
