I made the suggestion to walk the trail instead of just walking around the neighborhood. Best decision ever! We started the trail at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area at Paces Mills. The trail length is 3.8 miles and offers a great work out. The terrain varies from flat to slightly inclined. In addition to getting that heart rate up you get to experience what feels like the perfect place to unwind and unplug. It's the sounds and sights for me! The waves created in the Chattahoochee river, the sounds of birds chirping, the sight of plush tees, and bridges. It truly is a natural escape from a busy suburban lifestyle. A few things to note: 1. You can access this trail from two different parking areas. The lot on Interstate North Parkway is free of charge. However, it is a small lot. The larger Lot at Paces Mill is $5.00 per day. You can make the payment via an app. 2. this is a multi- use trail. As such, you can find people doing a leisure walk, jogging, biking, skating etc. motorized items are not permitted on the trail. 3. if you don't own a bike, there are rentals available. The company that is located at this trail is called Movatics. You can find them in your App Store to get started with your rental. The advertisement notes that it is free for your first hour and $3.00 per hour after that. 4. The park is open from dusk to dawn just like most trails and parks. I highly recommend stopping by this trail, it will not disappoint!

You can access the lot from either direction on Hwy 41. You first need to pay the $5 parking fee to recreation.gov. The instructions are fairly easy to follow; the whole transaction is done via smartphone. It probably took 5 minutes or less. The paved trail heads east along the river and crosses under I-75 before turning north. The trail is well shaded for much of the way, though it gets sunny as it ascends a significant hill just before the 1-mile mark. That was about as far as we went on our initial visit, though the trail kept going for, I think, at least another mile. There are nice views of the creek as well as (early) of the river. When we went, there were a fair number of others walking or running, so it never seemed too isolated.

This area is federal land with parking pass fee or use your annual/lifetime pass. First, the confusing part. Getting there! There is small sign or Akers Mill (see my picture) and it does not refer to it as West Palisades, even though all the markers inside the park say that. The intersections in the park on the trails are indicated as WP1, WP2, WP3, ... So to navigate go from one junction to another. There is handy wooden trail map at every junction. Trail names are non existent. Parking lot off Akers Mill is large and paved, but no bathrooms (WP12). Another large parking lot off Cobb Parkway has bathrooms (WP1). Also the park connects to county parks along Rottenwood Creek, which gives additional options. These are paved and more oriented towards bicycles. We did an 8 mile hike here. Starting at WP12. Hiking trails through the woods and along the river, back and forth with some decent elevation. When we got to WP1 we hiked along the Rottenwood Creek trail back to Akers Mill. At that point we walked along the road back to the parking area. Very nice combo of woods, paved paths, sidewalks. This was after Hurricane Zeta, so a lot of blow down on the trails but we were able to get around it. (See pics). A good workout! This was during covid and midweek, busy but not too bad. Have been here on the weekend and lots of folks, but plenty of parking and with the large size of the area plenty of space between groups hiking. Great area near the metropolitan area.

These natural parklands are a good place for walking, running, biking, kayaking and fly fishing! Ambiance is a natural park in the edge of a bustling city flanked by urban infrastructures...not manicured, full of bushes, trees, streams and the river with huge concrete overpasses. It's a good location to visit nature ITP. Here's the DL. About 1/3 of the paved trails and 3/4 of the unpaved trails are canopied with rolling elevation (~900 feet). Here, you could stroll a peaceful couple of miles and trail run moderate 5 - 8 miles. The paved trails are well marked and easy to navigate. But, the undeveloped trails are NOT with limited signs /blazes. Most unpaved trails are in the forest and have limited views of the river. Some parts are ridden with roots, loose rocks and boulders so wear proper shoes. When you do go on undeveloped trails, please "leave NO trace". There's a small ruin in the middle of the parklands but is unmarked, very steep with heavy over-growth. Biking is allowed ONLY on paved trails. Fly-fishing, I see when the water level is lower with slower currents. Encounters with trail blocking gumps occur here on weekends. Sunday strollers with NO self-awareness, blocking both sides, leisurewear selfie posers blocking trails and some parking themselves in the middle of an unpaved trail... :-/ Dogs on leash. There is No Maid service here to picks up your duty bag(s). There's a trash bin specifically for pets at the parking lot so pack out your 4 legged kids' mess paw-leash! Self-service...there are a few picnic tables, benches, animal proof trash bins, bathrooms, water fountains at the trail head and a boat ramp adjacent to the parking lot (off Cobb PKY / 41) for boats and kayaks. Next to the bathrooms there's a leveled grass area for Frisbees or other group games. Occasionally, I've seen CCP riding bicycles or electric motorcycles here as 2PDs are nearby. Parking is $3/day or $35/year and has about 60+ spots. Drive slowly...it's not the smoothest lot. Pay at the trailhead next to the boat ramp and the bathrooms. Be sure to display the perforated paper on your dash as rangers regularly check and ticket. These 4 nature areas are great if you are looking to workout with elevation changes in varying terrains...wood, boulders, concrete, mud, loose rocks, dirt...with views of the forest, streams and river at a nearby location. Meander through 2 miles of trails on the three loops, mostly flat and with plenty of greenery along the way. Start or end with a picnic at one of the tables near the trail entrance, or schedule a larger affair at the pavilion near the parking lot. This won't be an ideal destination for serious runners unless you're making a loop from the Battlefield during marathon training. But stroll away for a good hour or so without too much stress, since wide trails allow for easy navigation. If you get lost just keep walking and eventually you'll run into the place you were before to head back to the decent-sized parking lot. Most days you won't need to scramble for parking, since this seems to be moderately frequented by soft-core walking and off-road stroller types. We took bikes once with mixed success, and I think that's a solid plan with kids. You probably won't even need to carry your youngster while walking the bike back. Rumors exist this park will connect one day via a greenway to Allatoona Creek Park. You could add that 30-mile loop to your marathon training. Fun! For now I'll stroll along in sandals though these mulch-covered paths and thank Leone and the Price family for their generous land donation.

Got to the trailhead in town (across from reformation brewery, next to the stage platform) I proceeded to walk down the townhomes and the apartments. When I finally got to the official trailhead, the trail was closed. Ahhhhh, heck with it I bypassed the barricades and went off. It was indeed muddy but not as much as I could envision. Morning walks are definitely the best as it super quiet and I'm able to really just take in all the peace and quiet that being on the trail brings. Of course it get busier during the weekends but because the trail extends such a long distance, I've never felt that it was overcrowded and there are plenty of places where you can park and hop on the trail. It was just as nice as I remembered, maybe even a little nostalgic for me. The trail was calm and not too busy, but there were still enough people around to feel comfortable/safe without feeling crowded. It's perfect for families out for a stroll or a casual bike ride, and also great for runners and more experienced cyclists. Fall seems like one of the best times to visit. The tall trees lining the trail were beautiful, creating a really serene atmosphere. I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy some quiet time outdoors. Being outside and taking in the beauty of it all was motivation enough to keep walking, and we ended up walking for a little over 4 miles. A great alternative for a trail in the metro area if you don't want to deal with the hustle and bustle of the beltline. Can't wait to go back!
