Cockrell Mercantile is such a fun place to visit. The old-time feel and huge selection of gifts, candy, spices, and kitchen goods make it worth the trip. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the shops are full of unique finds you don't see anywhere else. It's one of those places you can wander around and always discover something new. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and we even got to try some delicious caramel apple tea which we had to bring home. I've never walked away empty handed! This is one of my favorite places to shop when visiting family in Pleasant Hill MO. It's in an out of the way place off any major roads. There are multiple small buildings with various types of kitchen, baking and cookware, dish ware and some clothing & bags. My favorite buildings are the General Store and Morton House. There is a large selection of choices! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We were there in the hour before closing. The building not in the General Store had closed out their cash drawers. They offered to walk us over to the main store to check out there. read more

This is a hidden gem. Trust me. I don't often find out of the way shops that are worthy of a rave review, but this is one. I've been to culinary shops before, some on the Independence square and those are Crown Center, like Function Junction, but this place is huge and had so many nostalgic fine dining aspects that I thought they were outdated norms. For example: When is the last time you found table cloth with matching cloth dinner napkins. I love the formality, but unfortunately I myself won't experience a need for these things, but for those people who have family and friends gather for the holidays, this is the place to come to find all those nice things for table set-up. I also loved that they had aprons of all sorts, pickled goods, and the highest quality European cookware. The nice hospitable thing here is they offer coffee and tea as you come in to browse. How they trust strangers walking around with a cup of tea or coffee without spilling it is beyond me. read more

I've driven by this thousands of times. I saw them on a recent Zip Trip Fox 4. So we drove out there expecting a few boutique shops. I did know that it's owned by a past employee of Pryde's old Westport, which I love. Building one is exactly Pryde's old Westport minus the pies. Building 2 is full of Fiestawear. Building 3, Pryde's. Building 4, not sure. Building 5, boutique items but not much. More cooking supplies. I think the large building is an event space. No where to eat. ( not even coffee, pies or pastry). Keep that in mind if you come out here. Literally unless you want see somewhere for a trip, you can go to Pryde's. They do sell a small amount of Vera Bradley, and a few clothing items. I saw a small amount of hand made soap, which I was going to buy. But I wasn't that impressed. read more

This is a great place to get a gift for someone. Really enjoyed the different buildings. Took a few pictures of the "baking building" that says Morton out front. Bought about 7 different items today. So much to choose from. Main building has a little bit of everything There's also the baking building Christmas building (not sure what it is other times of the year) A building that I'd compare to a boutique Last building is totally random stuff If you need a last minute gift you are sure to find it because it's packed with so many random things and I love it. read more

Funny thing happened about 115 years ago. There was this family in a small farming village called Cockrell, and they started a convenience store for the self-sufficient community. Through civil wars, changes in ownership, and highway building, this place remains, it's some of the best kitchen/housewares shopping you can find, rivaling even Pryde's of Westport (who were previous owners until around 2006, see http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/1999/09/27/newscolumn3.html). What you really have here is a group of houses from a town long-gone (read all about it here: http://cockrellmercantile.com/ht_docs/Cockrell.html), that have been reconditioned for shopping of all sorts. I hear couples register here for their wedding and stuff. Anyhow, if it's in your kitchen, and you _can't_ find it here, you must live in a one-room house. I mean it is like a frankensteinian Williams-Sonoma/Bed Bath and Beyond/Olde-tyme-village-place. The prices are not outrageous, but they do sell some well-to-do cookware. Also, if you are inquisitive, you might find the old original scale used by the first grocery store. It still works. But if anyone can figure out the measurements they use (besides the ounces markings), please let me know. It's keeping me up at night. In nice weather I guess you can lounge around outside and walk around the place, like you're back on the old homestead, reliving days gone by. Take an afternoon and leave your watch in the car; it is a nice venue for re-remembering how things might have been. read more

The last thing you expect to see nestled alongside a twisting country road in the bona fide Missouri boonies is a gourmet food and housewares boutique. If you happen to exit US Hwy 50 at the Cockrell sign and venture down the bucolic little road past white washed farms and gravel drives, that is exactly what you will find. The Cockrell Mercantile is a wonder to behold. The 115 year old general store building and its collection of vintage cottages are simply bursting with unique kitchen gadgets, specialty foods and spices, high end cookware, and carefully picked feminine favorites like Vera Bradley handbags and Caldrea soaps/lotions. They carry all of the eminent brands (Le Creuset, All Clad, Portmeirion, Nordicware, etc.) as well as some fun and funky unknowns. Each cottage has a theme. My personal favorite is the Fiesta Cottage, an entire store dedicated to the joyful rainbow of Fiestaware. They have pieces and colors that I never even knew existed. It is divine. The Morton House is a shrine to all things baking. On our recent visit, my 4 yr old lingered over the display of specialty sprinkles, browsed the hundreds of hard to find cookie cutters, and pleaded with me to buy one of the amazing castle cake pans. I am proud to say that I escaped Cockrell Mercantile with my wallet unscathed. My Mom was not so lucky; she succumbed to the merchandising magic and went home with a set of mini muffin tins. Foodies, cooks, and decorating fans will find it worth the trek out of town for an afternoon of browsing at The Mercantile. After exploring all of the cottages, be sure and take some time to relax on one of the many inviting benches dotting the landscaped grounds. It is the perfect city-break escape. 4.5 Stars. A hidden gem kitchen store tucked away off the highway. We lucked upon this find by some family friends who knew of the Market's existence. We were impressed by the numerous variety, as a collector of kitchen gadgets, we were kids in a candy store. I was happy to see new products I have never seen before, and the friendly staff was ready to help out and explain the whirl-a-gig's purpose. In addition to the gadgetry, there is the Fiesta-ware building, baking shack (my favorite for gadgets and pot racks), the main building with a standard knife selection, lots of canned goods, and pots/pans. Some of the prices can be slightly higher (than say Amazon), but for the originality and selection, as well as the ability to pick up the items before buying, it is worth it. My husband had asked me recently what Cockrell Mercantile was like so we stopped by yesterday on the way home from a doctor's appointment. I needed a couple of small Mother's Day gifts. Well I didn't expect to be followed around the entire time to make sure we didn't steal anything! It was so obvious. We would turn around and practically stumble over an associate that would say, "Just checking on you guys." We are both in our 60's, I walk with a cane, and neither one of us have stolen anything in our lives! I made a small purchase but I won't be back. Management has no idea how they made us feel, and maybe they don't care but I hope they read this. Maybe next time someone could offer to help us find a gift and they can have more time to attend a friendlier attitude seminar. read more

We love visiting this unique place when we're in town. Each little cottage has so much to look at and buy. Our favorite cottage has the food, like homemade canned veggies and fruit, sweets and so much more. We bought spiced canned peaches, regular canned peaches (in glass jars), triple dipped chocolate malted balls (dark and milk chocolate) and butter mints. Other cottages offer baking accessories, Le Creuset in many colors and styles, beautiful artificial flowers for memorial, Fiestaware in many styles and colors, as well. This place is a bit out of the way for me but definitely worth the trip. There are four main stores on the premises and, lucky for me, one of them is devoted solely to Fiestaware. I love going out and picking new pieces for my collection of this colorful, sturdy and West Virginia made plate ware. When I'm not hunting down new Fiestaware I love the main store. If you can't find a kitchen gadget here, it's probably not been thought of yet. In addition to every kind of kitchen utensil, you can also find some specialty foods, cookware, linens, decorative items...pretty much anything you need for your kitchen and cooking needs. The staff are super friendly. When you first walk into the main store, you'll immediately be offered a complimentary tea or coffee so you can stroll around the store, sipping a hot or cold drink. Nice touch. Get on their mailing list and you'll be informed of special holiday open house events. Go for these events...and then go at other times too. Bring a picnic and eat out on the lawn! It's a bit of a ways to go but worth the drive. This quaint group of buildings with pretty gardens each feature a different focus for your kitchen. One building is all about baking, one has Vera Bradley, one has Fiesta Ware and the largest has almost every kitchen gadget you can imagine! We stopped at Cockrell Mercantile on a drive back from Sedalia after someone mentioned it to my husband. We were just told there was a store we'd like. Well, okay, we've got time to kill, let's find it. My only complaint about Cockrell Mercantile is that it's so far from me. If you need fiesta ware, kitchen and baking gadgets, or gifts for about anyone, this is a great place to stop at. When it comes to kitchen and baking stuff, this place is STOCKED. They've got it all. The Cockrell Mercantile is a unique, quaint and delightful set of shops in the middle of nowhere (yeah, I consider anything outside the 435 loop nowhere, deal with it) but it is totally worth a stop or a nice destination for a weekend drive. I wish I could tell you the number of times I have been to this store. Anytime I wanted a piece of fiesta ware or a great trip away I would stop here. My husband recently took me on Valentine's Day for a particular piece of Fiesta I was wanting. They proudly display on their doors a military discount. My husband has three careers in the Ems/law enforcement area. I greatly respect the military and in the past while visiting Cockrell they have given us the same 10% discount. On this particular day I asked for the discount and was informed it was against their policy, they only give a military discount. I understand that things happen, maybe small business owners lose too much money giving out discounts. However, when Becky the owner, was called and asked she flat out said no. I respect her answer and as a former customer, Suporter of law enforcement, fire, and ems personnel I also choose to never ask again for a gift certificate for my birthday, or Christmas. I will also guarantee that any girls road trip will not include stopping at Cockrell Mercantile. I support the service those men and women in law,fire,and Ems provide. I went down the road to Sedalia, MO to Juanita's and she gladly gave me the discount. She also has a lovely selection of Fiesta. read more

You will not find a more unique place in the area. I usually go on rainy days because I know I will feel comfortable when I walk in the door. They always offer coffee or tea to sip when browsing. They have anything from mini muffin baking pans to kitchenaid mixer blades. The prices may be a little higher than Walmart, but most everything is higher quality. The kitchenaid beater blade I bought was the same price as Amazon, not that I would have minded paying more. It is a great place to shop for gifts and a fabulous way to spend an afternoon with friends. read more
