We stayed here for two nights, last August, and loved it! Beautiful, immaculate, charming and sumptuous accommodations with *everything* you could ask for at a very reasonable price. No need to elaborate on the country - doesn't get more scenic and wide-open beautiful than the Surprise Valley. The Cockrell's are great hosts and truly helpful. The cottages are quite private and located a short drive from the main residence. Note: this is a working ranch, and that's much of the charm and experience - you will see cattle and ranch life (which can be a wee buggy at night, though it wasn't a problem for us - the house was super clean and bug-free). I have stayed here for the past 2 years. This will be my third. It is the best in town. The lodging is clean and inviting. It is also very affordable (respectively). Every year me my friends look forward to the long days of glassing for critters. Plan on bringing up your favorite cut of meat to grill on their BBQ. Nice clean comfortable beds for tired hunters. A great living room for telling stories and lies. I suggest this to any one who loves to shoot sqeakers. The ranch hosts are super nice and have a wealth of knowledge. Cozy, clean lodging with beautiful scenery. I stayed here for a week for work, with a large group, so we rented both lodges. I must say, it was a great experience. The lodges are cozy, and comfortable with every convenience. The kitchens are fully stocked with dishes, utensils and gadgets: perfect for cooking even large meals. Each lodge features a brand new hot tub with incredible views of the surrounding valley, mountains, and ranch land. Service is friendly, and guests are treated like family. If you are looking for a quiet getaway or perhaps a ranch or hunting experience, this is your spot. There are two lodges. Both have 3 rooms and are similar, I think lodge #2 is slightly bigger. They have been completely remodeled and are decorated with rustic country decor. The beds were very comfortable, the hot tub under the stars was relaxing, and the homemade apricot turnovers were delicious. I would recommend this destination for anyone looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and simply enjoy beautiful views of nature and the quiet slow pace of a rural ranching community. read more

Couldn't help but feel I was being gouged as she insisted we prepay for 3 days of shooting squirrels on one field! After 10 years of helping farmers/ranchers get rid of pesky squirrels, I have never been asked to pay. After being completely dissatisfied with the lack of squirrels I asked for my money back and she said "No". We found some other land to shoot where we shot for 2 more days of squirrel-shooting bliss! Nope, I would not recommend this to anyone. This place is over-priced and over-sold for very little value. ps Everywhere we went in town the internet was free. Our Hotel, the cafe, the grill where we ate all had free wifi! I noticed they charged daily per the website...ripoff! read more

Stayed at Cockrell's with a good friend in October of this year. The lodge is beautifully decorated, was clean from top to bottom and Deb's hospitality was 5 star. There are private hot tubs with each of the two lodgings and the views of the mountains and the night sky are outstanding. The Short(ish) Review (TLDR review to follow): My family of three (myself, my husband, and our 11-year-old son) have stayed here for a week, twice a year, for 12 years now. We LOVE this place. Whether you're just passing through, or wanting a longer getting-away-from-it-all experience, this place is perfect in all seasons. Set on a working cattle ranch, you have the choice of two different lodges, and Lodge #1 can accommodate a multi-family group. The photos Debra posts of the rooms are accurate representations of what you can expect (not coyly misleading like other places). While there's eating in town, picking up some groceries and cooking up whatever you like is easy... the kitchen is FULLY stocked. Beds are super comfy! Our favorite part? Summer or winter, after-dark hot-tubbing... no light pollution out here... the stars are AMAZING!!! TLDR review: For a week every summer, and a week every Christmas, we stay in Lodge #1. Let me just say, up front, I can't STAND B&B's. Why? Because I'm an introvert who falls into a cold sweat at the thought of shared bathrooms and scheduled breakfast with strangers. This place gives me all the home-fires feeling of a B&B, without the couple who can't wait to tell me about their last trip to Sedona. Are you an introvert, too? Or maybe you just plain don't want to talk to another sole for a few days? You can do that here. Debra and family and the best kind of people (so chat them up, if you like), but they're cool about being scarce if that's your deal. Wanting to disappear? Tell everyone you know there's no cell service... most people won't know where this place is anyway, and if they DO Google it, they'll believe it's in a dead zone. But it isn't. WiFi service is weak, true... but you can get calls and texts and slow internet (don't tell anyone, if you don't want to). Satellite TV will get you all the couch-potato kick-back you need when you're not out getting fresh air. I have SiriusXM, and just bring a SatRad for streaming music. In the summertime, we bring our quads on a trailer. We ride around the ranch roads just to watch the multitudes of summering birds (birding is good around here, if that's your thing), and the deer. There are lots of places in the valley, over towards the Nevada State Line, and up in the Warners, to take the quads and have a great day of fun. When we get home, the huge gas BBQ on the back patio is where we fix our dinners. The willows and poplars across the field behind the patio usually house at least one family of Great Horned Owls, so they're always fun to listen to and watch while the Night Hawks swoop around and the Snipes call. Got kids? They can ride their bikes, play in the hot tub, and build a fort in the poplars. The beautifully maintained lawns and flower gardens make for a great place to set up a croquet course; or, take advantage of the horseshoe pits my hubby built (shoes are on the fence)... or forget all that energy and go horizontal with a blanket, a glass of wine, and a stack of magazines (don't forget to ask what the schedule is for the sprinklers!). My son over the years has basically grown up pretending twice a year he's a ranch kid. At Christmas time, Debra decorates the whole lodge for the holidays... lots of lights, garlands, and a tree. I don't even hardly do up my own house much now, because I know I'll get the full experience when we go to Cockrell's. We bring our DVDs of Christmas movies and fully enjoy (there's a stack of DVD's in the TV stand) If you DO like to cook (like I do), this place is awesome. In the dining room, there's a HUGE long farmers table for meals. Got men-folk? There's a big 'mud room' where they can hang, drink their beverages of choice, and get out of your hair. Basically a great place for them to claim as man cave. And even thought it's cold... brave the walk to and from the hot tub... the sky is AMAZING from the tub in the winter night, and after getting all warmed up, then mincing your way back to the comfort of your well-heated lodge. You'll sleep like a baby! The Cockrell family is the real deal. Here's how I know their heart: just a few years into our stays, I became a double-amputee. We almost canceled, because I was completely wheelchair bound. Lodge #1 has a couple steps up porches in and out of the lodge. I called Debra, asked her if she could measure the width of doorways (just needed to know if I could get in and out of the bathroom in a wheelchair, and you can). My husband had already decided he'd be able to carry me in and out of the lodge. But when we arrived, we found that they had built a simple plywood ramp over the steps into the lodge. I can't even begin to tell you what this meant to me at this time in my life. I entered and exited on my own, and felt just as comfortable as I always had. So, yeah, need something? Just ask. It's home away from home in all the best ways. read more
