I am lounging on.our comfortable king bed, full from dinner, watching "The Great American Baking Show" on roku. The heater, though old, almost an antique like me, warms the room nicely. A shower awaits tomorrow morning. The grounds are nice, the place well cares for, it just isn't a chain stay. Darn! I'm missing my reward points! Not really. Bathroom recently redone. Flooring fresh, new sink cabinet Toto toilet. retiled shower - fresh and white. However,bour tub was slow draining. I think the tub drain lever is sirzrd, blocking drain flow Would we stay again? Nice clean rooms and excellent location just out of Alturas CA. I have stayed here before and plain to see they have upgraded some of the rooms. Comfortable King Sized Bed. I was up in the areas watching wildlife and the wild horses in the Warner Mountains. That evening got really cold in the teens so we decided to move North and visit Alturas. The manager was great and drove over after hours to check us in late in the night. Recommended. read more

We visited in October, the evening temperature was cold. There is not manager on site, we has to call and wait. We checked in and I was charged an extra $20.00 for my well mannered dog. No big deal. Then we went to the brass Rail for dinner. Their service was lacking waitstaff and the gal servicing us was rude, plus the food was expensive for the quality we received. One of my friends visited the restaurant in years past and said it has gone down hill. I would recommend eating somewhere else. The only positive comment is they serve plenty of food. You may be disappointed with the quality but you will not go home hungry. Back to the hotel, the manager was back when we returned. I had just discovered the bathroom was lacking a shower mat, a floor mat and washcloths. I caught him as he was leaving and asked for the missing items. He said the washcloths were on order, they had none. ??? A hotel with no washcloths ??? He brought the other items and left the premises. We got ready for bed and discovered there were no blankets And the manager was gone. We thought no biggie, we will just turn on the heater. We did and went to bed. I woke at about 12 AM freezing. I checked the heater and it was blowing cold air, the heater did not work. So I turned it off and used my husband to try to stay warm. The bed was also worn and uncomfortably. So we're were cold and uncomfortable all night. It was the worse night I have ever experienced in a hotel room. Beware! read more

We just stayed there for 4 nights and we have been staying there for the past number of years. The motel is going downhill fast! The carpet is stained and dirty, no basic amenities such as wifi, plastic cups, ice machine, paper, pen, phone. TV had less than a dozen channels. Towels were well worn, no washcloths, one hand towel. It was going downhill last year; we should not have given them another chance. It used to be nice, our group would all love to stay there, no more. They charge an extra 3+% for credit cards and give a discount for cash. We have never heard of that with any of the motels, hotels, etc. where we have stayed! We cannot recommend and will not stay there again. read more

I've stayed here off and on for years and always enjoyed my stays, it has been a family run operation but apparently that has changed since a family members passing, and for the worse. They advertise wifi, no they don't have it, we asked if it was just down? no they don't have it, asked why are you advertising it? loud crickets. there are no basic self serv amenities in the room like a coffee maker, ok I can live with that, the frig was plugged in but I would suggest you put your soda in there if you want to warm it up; but not even plastic cups at the sink for teeth brushing etc. some basic functioning window shades without need of me doing the repairs? that would be nice. The room next to me was occupied by a friend helping handle some business while in Alturas rm 36 and 35 respectively, his room is basically L shaped with the narrow part leading to the sink and the bathroom, pretty standard, but like my room, no basic amenities, his TV is located on the way to the bathroom, in order to view TV he had to sit in a straightback chair in the little hallway placing him about 2' from the TV, we could not move the set up into the bed area because the wiring would not allow it being relocated, and as it turned out, it's just as well because his TV was definitely having issues, mine was fine and located correctly. The allure is being able to walk to the brass rail for dinner, 1054', perfect. In the future, I'll stay someplace else in town and drive to dinner, maybe the brass rail, maybe not. I noticed on my receipt for the room it reads " Brass Rail 2" if The Rail has hooked it wagon to this horse, you might want to rethink that, or get a rein on a looming issue because it's starting to get a vibe of a No Tell Motel; There are at least 2 other nice eating establishments that I have sampled in Alturas, the Rail is not the only spot in town. positive points? the bed was reasonably comfortable, my friend's was apparently not; the walk in showers? Horrible. I paid $182 total with two dogs. Part of that was a resort fee of over$10. Resort??? Then they charged me a 2% fee for using a debit card, but the math was wrong and it was more like 4%. The first "dog" room had the nastiest carpet I have ever stepped foot on. My dogs are house broken and cleaner than the carpet. The two TVs did not work so they switched us to another room. That room had soiled carpet but not as bad as the first. Half of the lights didn't work and the toilet barely flushed. Now I know why they place was almost empty. We got the heck out of there early the next day. read more

There might be better accommodations in Lakeview, but that's an hour up the road. Plus this location is better because it is close to Lava Beds and Modoc Wildlife Refuge. We got a funky room with 3 OK double beds, microwave, fridge, and tiny bathroom. Nothing fancy, but clean, and the hostess was very nice. read more

This is an older motel that is very clean and well maintained. Everything worked which isn't that common in motel rooms. It was quiet and is an excellent value too. For what you pay for Rim Rock Motel is dollar for dollar as good as any other hotel/motel chain out there. We called in our reservations months in advance and they were very nice to chat with over the phone. I had to get something shipped to the motel since we were coming in from Canada. They were very accommodating and had the package waiting on the bed. There was a small miscommunication from when I called the lady ahead of time, letting them know we would be arriving late (after 8pm) and so our key wasn't at the front office door so we unfortunately had to wake up the nice gentleman innkeeper. He wasn't upset at all and really understood our plight (we had just driven 10+ hours from Spokane). The room was cozy and quaint, almost like staying at a family member's home. Everything was very clean and working which was more important. Not all rooms are the same and we found this out when it was time to return home from our trip. We had booked another overnight stay at the Rim Rock on our way back (arriving late again but wasn't able to call ahead) the keys were luckily left at the office for us (THANK YOU!). We got a stand up shower in our room this time, it was a bit of a tight squeeze but nothing we couldn't manage. I'd just ask for a tub room the next time we stop in for an overnight stay. If you have another option available, do not stay here. It IS best in town, but only because the rest are also not good. We passed through town on our way from crater lake, OR, to Las Vegas. It was late and we needed a place to stay so we took it. The pillows were really decorative and not suitable for sleep, which made my neck hurt real bad and it woke me up at 4:00am. Normally hotels/motels offer two kinds of pillows, hard and soft, so you can choose. Not the case here. The room is renovated but i found it to be extremely untastefull. But that's just me. We overslept and were about to check out at 11:00am (check out time), but they called us at 11:01 to let us know check out was at 11:00. I mean, we were the only ones there!!! Couldn't you let us have an extra 5 minutes?? I would stay there if I must, but don't expect much. Overall, clean and neat. read more

We like supporting family owned businesses as often as we can and it's hard for us to leave a 3 star rating for Rim Rock. First of all, its location is not too bad, it's about a 20 minute walk from downtown Alturas. It has lovely grounds with a grill and area for your horses. And you can play horseshoe for fun or sit on the swing and relax for the evening. We had a double bed and it just seems like the room has seen better days. The mattress felt like two planks of wood and I woke up with terrible allergies in the middle of the night. I don't think they have pet-free rooms so there must have been dog dander on the bed covers. The carpets looked a bit old and dirty and so did the linens and towels. I think maybe it's time to give it a makeover, rip out the carpets and go with bare floors? Brighten up with a lick of paint and new covers? Otherwise, the people are nice and we appreciate the family owned business. read more

I have stayed in every hotel in Alturas (except the Niles) over the past two years, and this is hands-down my favorite, and also the cheapest. Nothing too special about the rooms themselves, but they were clean and comfortable, with everything in working order. What makes it special is the outdoor space. The parking lot is quiet, there are comfortable chairs and tables outside every room, and the view looking out towards the Warners ranges from pretty to spectacular. Also, there are BBQ's to use, a horseshoe pit, and a nice wooden swinging bench. It is a very relaxing and enjoyable place to unwind from a long work or travel day. Yes, the wifi is slow and the decor is a little outdated, but so what? Do yourself a favor and skip the chain hotels on Main St that are louder, falling apart more, and much more expensive, and treat yourself to a night at the Rim Rock. read more

Very nice 50's retro feel. Nice and clean. The owners have taken apparent pride in their local business and have given it a feel of homeyness and hard work. Obvious care has been taken to give people a taste of country living. If you want a chain motel feeling this isn't it. It is suited more to people who want a quiet casual stay and set up for activities that many people from the North State would find handy such as horse stalls and places to park trailers. The yard areas are very nice and have a garden type setting in the back lawn area. Even has an area for Barbecue and horse shoes. Had no hassle about my service dog either. Just a cute place. Very small room. Concrete walls make it feel like a prison cell. Crammed in small table and 2 chairs, but no room between bed to pass by. Wall air fan and heater. Did have microwave, coffee maker, and small refrigerator. There was a stove with 2 burners, a sink, dishes and cooking utensils, but seemed unsafe. There was a desk, wall TV, and corner space for suitcase with a few hangars. Although bathroom small, shower was accommodating. No hair dryer. Cute patio chairs outside of room. Nicely spaced out rooms in several buildings. Surrounding hills and countryside pleasant. Way overpriced at $65. Would have been reasonably priced at a maximum of $45. This is the most courteous hotel I've ever been to! I've traveled all of the western U.S. And have stayed in tons of hotels all around but the Rim Rock is above and beyond. They just upgraded the rooms and they have flat screens now, they used to have Huge box TVS lol. Call ahead and they can organize parking for a travel trailer with electricity hook ups! My family used to do that quite a bit, the last few times we've stayed in rooms however. The ownership just changed hands if I'm not mistaken but they're carrying on just fine! My room at Rim Rock Motel felt cramped due to its size and furniture layout, had dead bugs in it, and the bathroom was extremely small. The hardest thing to deal with was an overwhelming chemical scent. I assume this was from floral- and fake-fruit-scented cleaning and pesticide products. It was awful. I opened doors and windows trying to get rid of it; there was no bathroom fan. I wouldn't bother to post a review---what do you expect from a typical roadside motel?---except that they charged me $25, without telling me. I found the charge on my credit card, called them, and they said I had left "red stuff" on one of their towels. I asked them to send me the towel. They refused. Yep, I just bought a $25 towel without knowing it, with no evidence that I did something terrible to the towel, and I don't even get to keep the danged towel. They accused me of dyeing my hair in their motel, which I did not do. (I could barely even stand to stay in that stinky bathroom long enough to brush my teeth! Believe me, I wasn't sitting around dyeing my hair!) When I posted a complaint about this on another site, Rim Rock Motel's manager accused me of lying. This is not exactly fabulous customer service. She then posted an anti-Burner screed, not that I had identified myself as a Burner. Burners and our ilk---you know, "alternative" types of people---might consider one of the other good motels nearby. Leave this place to its hyper-conservative owners and find someplace that won't hit your credit card without so much as a how-de-doo. A review above mentions staying here on the way back from "the Burn" (Burning Man Festival). I'm glad you had a positive experience with these guys; I did not. read more

Couldn't take our pack n play so they found one for us. Room is clean, quiet - considering they're right off the highway. My 8 year old played horseshoes, we ran around the green area in the back with the 2 year old. Refrigerator and microwave in our room. WE had three double beds which accommodated my family nicely. A great stay for the money. True there's not many outlets but it's an older place and we only needed one. Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again when we are in the area. read more

Our accommodations in the new wing (room #15) were very nice, generously-sized and greatly welcomed after coming from a week at the Burn. There is in-room coffee, Wi-Fi, a microwave, a large bar frig, hair dryer, TV (of course), an iron and ironing board and a plush swivel-rocker lounge chair. The queen beds are new and comfortable, as were the pillows. The main room has a convenient sink, counter and mirror alcove and the bright bathroom has new fixtures, a separate ceiling heater, a robust vent fan, a small window for added ventilation and lots of hot water. The main room heater/AC unit is a new design and quiet. Overall, the room is very quiet, thanks to the soft, thick carpet underfoot. We arrived before check-in time and the manager on duty had the maid redirect to prepare our room early. The room price is very reasonable and the view across the fields to the mountains beyond is beautiful. I would stay here again next year. read more

extremely clean! this is a 50s style motor court motel. certainly not luxe, as some people seem to expect. if you are looking for a fancy spa... Alturas is probably not for you. but for a motel, it was updated, quiet, safe and clean. found it on tripadvisor... everyone said how clean it was and they were right. good night's sleep. they even have a stable for your horses. very reasonably priced. efficient service at the counter. it was so clean, we even left a much bigger than normal tip for the housekeeping staff. would absolutely return here again! read more
