I don't normally write reviews but I recently got my haircut here by Ernie and I love it so much! I've had my fair share of bad haircuts in Boston so I was definitely hesitant to come but Ernie and his team made this experience so pleasant. I went for a korean style, long layers with face framing pieces at the front and he did such a good job with this haircut! He even took the time to explain why he was doing certain things throughout the process and taught me how to style my hair. This ended up being my favorite haircut I've had in Boston. My hair feels so light and soft afterwards. I will definitely come back and I highly recommend this place! Thank you so much! read more

I decided that growing my hair wasn't cutting it. It was apparent that 80's hairstyle (i.e. mullet) wasn't in style anymore, so I tried contacting several barbershops but they were either booked or closed for the holiday weekend. A check on Yelp and I spot Coco Head Hair Studio based in Chinatown and specializes in handling Asian type hair. For me I was a bit skeptical, because I was afraid they turn my hair to like some Asian pop star, which did happen to me the last time I went a a hair salon that specializes in working with Asian hair. I call and they have an opening in the afternoon so I decided to give it another try. The place itself is a little worn, but felt like any other Chinatown establishment. The service was excellent, and that was from the hair wash to the haircut. Spending $40 for a haircut is more than I typically spend but it was well worth it. The hair wash itself was great, she not only washed my hair, she asked if I was comfortable and if the water temperature was fine, and gave me a mini head massage, which completely relaxed me. The hair stylist was very specific in getting the cut to what I want. He had excellent technique and was very meticulous, rinsing my hair after the initial cut and rechecked my hair. I have to say that this was one of the most satisfying hair cutting experience I have had. read more

I got a haircut from Earnie and it was pretty terrible. I went on the recommendation of a previous review that he cuts frizzy hair well. When I went to the salon, Earnie basically let me say one sentence before he thought he knew what I wanted and began chopping(yikes!) both sloppily and brusquely. I've never had a haircut in which I wanted layers and the hair stylist didn't pull up layers of hair to cut. He also tried to thin my hair out in the Asian way that is always a terrible idea. I tried to warn him nicely that I don't like it when hair gets thinned out, but he didn't listen... *chop chop chop* and basically my thick wavy hair turned into this flat, way-too-short haircut. It looks terrible, I'm just nursing my regrets and waiting for my hair to grow out... :( So sad. read more

Earnie is amazing! I have been procrastinating on finding a good hair stylist since moving to Boston last year and had less-than-stellar experiences at a few places. So when several friends recommended Cocohead and Earnie to me, I figured I would give it a shot. Earnie was great to work with - from the moment I came in, he greeted me and sat down with me to hear what I wanted to do with my hair and he asked questions and made sure he understood exactly what I wanted. Then, throughout the whole process, he would explain to me what he was doing, why, and the way it would create the look I was going for. Also, he provided tons of helpful tips about styling my hair (I am pretty low maintenance, don't blow dry or use products much) so he was good about helping me figure out what would work with my hair and lifestyle (as opposed to just recommending that I use tons of product and blow dry every day, like most stylists usually tell me). My haircut turned out great. I have super long hair and usually just get really boring layers but he was able to keep my hair long but give more movement to the layers and just take it up a notch from any other haircut I've had. I'm very pleased! I will definitely be coming back here and recommend Earnie to anyone looking for a good hair stylist! read more

I found Coco Head via Yelp, and it doesn't disappoint. I'm an Asian girl with the typical thick, straight black hair. I've been living in the Boston area for 5 years, skipping half-heartedly from hair salon to hair salon - I always left feeling rather dissatisfied with my haircut, as if whoever cut it didn't quite understand how to make my hair move. I had very long and heavy hair that fell flat, no matter how much I said I wanted bangs with movement. Enter Fan at Coco head. I knew I wanted a change, and I figured going to a haircuttery in Chinatown might yield people who know how to deal with Asian hair. I said I wanted to get a short haircut, I said I wanted something asymmetrical, and Fan did an amazing job. I had no idea my hair could look so good! I've been back twice for touch-ups. Fan's haircuts grow out beautifully, but I've grown addicted to modifying my hairstyle a little bit with each trim - so I wind up heading back every 2-3 months. read more

I get my haircut by Joey and find he does a fantastic job! Last time, I got my hair layered, and I believe he has really great technique. I have been about four times to this salon. He works from the bottom layers of hair up (compared to some stylists that work from the top-down or cut all layers simultaneously). He also made sure to thin out the layers to ensure the final shape was even and smooth. For their technique, their price is fair. The decor is not very posh, but for me, the quality of haircut is much more important than the atmosphere (as long as it is clean, like this salon). I am always satisfied with my haircuts from here and find the staff very friendly. read more

8-9 years of entrusting my hair to Earnie and I wouldn't have it any other way. 4 of those years I was living in Boston, but then I spent 2 in VA, and 2 in CT....so yes, you can say that I think it's well worth the trek :) I have long, super thick Asian hair and you'd think there's not much variety you can do with it, but Earnie always manages to give me a different but awesome look anytime I want to change it up, depending on what my lifestyle and environment is like at that moment. He can do it all! Hmm...let's see..I'd say my journey with Coco Head has been split into 3 chunks: - Laid-back, relaxed job (early 20's) = Funky, vibrant highlights...lots of bright reds, fuschias, and even a stint with a midnight blue! All different length cuts. - Grad school years = Lots of multi-hued highlights, but not crazy enough to distract a prof during a lecture :) My favorite combo...natural dark brown/black base punctuated with glints of blond, caramel, and a deep red. - Uber-Corporate = More "natural" highlights, but super shiny and multidimensional. Rich auburns and chocolate browns. I should mention that I tried a perm a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. Not one of those frizzy 'fros, but Earnie used the largest rollers and only went up to around ear-level so it resulted in big luscious waves. Now? I just went for my regular visit last weekend and am currently sporting long layers and sideswept bangs. Colorwise, burgundy highlights. The best thing about the styles is that they're low maintenance. I usually just air dry, spend 5 min smoothing any unruly strands with a flat iron, use a dime-sized dollop of finishing cream, and head out the door looking exactly like I did leaving Coco Head. I'm moving back down to VA later this summer but you can bet I'll be trying damn hard to continue getting my Coco Head fix... read more

My mom and I have been going to Joey for years. I appreciate how meticulous and honest he is with every appointment. He really takes his time with our haircuts, always double-checking his work. Mg mom came in once after an appointment, because her perm was not as curly as she anticipated, and he fixed immediately, free of charge. Although Coco is on the pricier side especially if you have longer locks, I'd definitely recommend this place for its consistency and attention to detail. I heard a few good recommendations from friends about CoCo Head, so I decided to come for a cut. I was disappointed by the high price for a mediocre cut. Now I'm not picky with my hair cut ... I'm happy with a one length cut and up to go. I only need a simple cut to stop the split ends. I made an appointment w Ernie and explained to him what I needed. He did an okay job with trimming my hair ends and lightly gave me some layers. I was happy to go after 15 minutes I did think that carrying a $50 in cash was enough since most hair cuts in Chinatown are about $30ish. I was surprised when Ernie charged a whopping $45 for the simple snip w layers that took 15mins. I gave them all the cash I had, then only have $5 left for tips. I walked out felt surprised by the high price and with a disappointment of a medium-quality cut. I never want to go back again because I feel I get jipped out at CoCo Head. $50 for a trim is almost a robbery. read more

I came here two days before Chinese New Year to see if I could get my hair cut, as I've tried twice before to book an appointment last minute, and they are always packed! Clearly they are in great demand! I've had 3 haircuts in the Boston area, and they've all been disastrous! Every time, I tell myself, NO MORE haircuts in Boston! I will no longer cheat on my hairdresser in NY! But I was in great need for a haircut before the new year, so I gave the Boston area one more shot based on the yelp reviews here at Coco Head. I do NOT regret it!! And I will be back again! Earnie is the man. He's been my hair guy for 3 years now and always knows the best way to style my hair. He's a great colorist, too - he knows how to keep color original but within limits (e.g. working at major corporations = no red hair, but fun highlights and summer do's work). Hair cut is about $30 (without the shampooing), with highlighting/color it comes to about $100-$120. I agree with Andrew S.; I definitely would NOT want gwai-lo hair guys to cut my awesome Asian hair. read more

He consulted with me and had my hair cut, styled, and curled in about 30 minutes, and it looked really good. While I was there they let some white lady bring her lap dog in though, which was kind of weird, but hey... A four-star hair salon by any other count, and a fifth star for Ernie. He's super-friendly and does a fantastic job. For $35+tip (I leave $5-10), I get a shampoo, cut, 2nd shampoo, and clean-up. Ernie knows me by name now, though it's not always the right one. No big deal! As someone who's thinning on the top, he's good at cropping down the hair on the sides my head and layering the top. I'm very happy with my hair cut and color. I wanted to find a great hair salon so I decided to check out Yelp. Looking at the reviews, this sounded like the perfect hair salon for me. I made an appointment but do to the unreliable green line, I couldnt make it on time and called and they helped me set up another appt. Then I called again to have it earlier and they were very flexible. I walked in for the first time and was greeted by Ernie. We talked about my hair and its style. He told me he was going to highlight my hair with reddish colors (right when he said that, I thought of an ugly red color...so) and I wanted blonde so he gave me that (BIG mistake!! lol, I feel like he should have told me that a burgundy red looked better. The lady who washed my hair was too rushed and not relaxing at all, I was waiting for the massage, but it was like 1,2,3. After the color, he began to blow dry, and I would admit, I HATED IT!! I was so mad at Yelp! But after, he began to angle it and told me the reason why he cut off so much of my hair at the ends and it was because of the previous bleached ends...so it made sense. When it was complete, I was satisfied with my haircut...I paid 105 excluding tips and overall, the haircut and full highlighting took about an hour and half. I would definately go back for another haircut, but as for the coloring, I will do it myself or another salon. read more

I had a hair cut today for the first time at coco from Joey. My hair length was a medium and I wanted short. I wanted to prepare for an upcoming spring/summer. Here is the thing, I have a very thin hair. To the point I have no confidence of believing that I could receive a good hair cut with style. Many hair stylist I've been to would comment how thin my hair is and they couldn't make it look a bit better. Today, I closed my eyes and follow my gut; What do you know I left the salon with a great big smile. Joey did a wonderful job not just giving me the desire of a hair cut but as well as making my bangs work. My bangs are stubborn and won't make up its mind on which way it wants to go. What Joey did was he gave my bangs a good length to the point I can flip which every way I want and it would still make the back of my hair look good. Awesome job so far. Ask for Ernie. He's one of the best if not best stylist I've ever had cut my hair. He makes good suggestion without being pushy. He also gives good advice on how to maintain my hair. I've never had a haircut from here that I didn't like, especially with Ernie. I remember my very first haircut from here - almost 10 years ago. I LOVED my haircut at that time and got so many compliments on it. However, as a new college student, I couldn't afford to keep getting my hair cut at coco head and tried to find a cheaper alternative. =( Fast forward 6-7 years later, I find myself back at coco head. This is also my first encounter with Ernie and want no one else to cut my hair (although the other stylist seem just as good.. but I like ernie's personality as well as skills). I've already come here before and got a haircut from Joey. He was great. Not only did he listen to me, do exactly what I asked for my sideswept bangs, my hair felt so light! I have very fine hair and he didn't layer it too much. I was so happy with the haircut! The next 3 months, my hair grew out very nicely and still looked gorgeous. Finally I knew I needed a trim and unfortunately they were closed in November for vacation. I went and got a trim somewhere else but felt like I was cheating or something. I came back this month and got Ernie and he was just as wonderful. He really listened to me and my hair came out spectacular. I'm sure this will also grow out nicely until I visit them again in Spring. The people here are nice, courteous and good listeners. I don't know how he does it, but I swear that Lucas knows magic. I've seen a number of stylists over the years for keeping up my ombre, and Lucas' work is hands down the best I've ever seen. When I go in, I just give him a general idea of what I'm looking for, and what he comes up with is always exactly what I want or better. He's also super fast! My hair is crazy stubborn (both in terms of getting the color to hold AND getting it to dry after a wash), but Lucas is able to get me in and out in about 2 hours. He'll chat with me a bit during that time so that it's not a continuous awkward silence, but he also doesn't try to force conversation (for which I'm super thankful). Nice guy AND great stylist. My husband also comes to see Lucas whenever he needs a cut (although we, obviously, go on different days, so I can't speak too much about his experience), and we're always satisfied with the results. Their prices are pretty hard to beat, just make sure to bring cash. read more

WoW ! I went here on a 'whim'. The last salon visit (not named) did not do a very good job ,and I have spent 5 months hiding under a baseball cap..not knowing where-to-go next was a daunting, so I did not go anywhere..until I saw in yelp the glowing responses and intrigued by the name of the shop.Ernie cut and 'rescued' my hair and I am so grateful for his experience, which notably has been 30 years at the same location. Returning in January! I have long straight Asian hair and have never had a successful haircut outside of an Asian salon, no matter how much money I spend or how posh the venue. The same Korean lady in LA has cut my hair for years, so I was leery to have to find someone new, but I had to do it, the hair was just getting too long and heavy. Based on all the reviews, I made an appointment with Joey for just a trim, so that if it was disastrous, it would grow back pretty quickly. The salon itself is typical of a chinatown kind of place, not luxurious, tiny, and definitely far from spotless. You do have to kind of hope that they sanitized their equipment and just cross your fingers for the best. I was surprised to find how empty the place was on a Sat afternoon, but it was good for me, no wait and no competition for his attention. Joey checked out my hair, we discussed that I wanted to make my layers more dramatic and take only about 2 inches off the bottom. The wash was standard. Joey is a man of very few words, and what he lacks in words he makes up for in patience and being meticulous. He spent about an hour working on it, was very steady and methodical, never made any drastic moves and trimmed hair down to the millimeter. he checked and rechecked everything multiple time and immediately addressed minor concerns that I had. He didn't really do a full blow out b/c we agreed to keep it natural, but it looked good. For $50 (included tip) it was a steal. The next day the hair never looks good, my hair usually takes about a month or two to grow into a haircut, but I can tell that it is going to grow out well and look really good once it settles in. I came back for a trim cause everywhere else was busy. I waited about 20 minutes and then she told me it would be 45$....umm I dont even get my hair washed since I dont like it. I only wanted an inch trimmed off no special haircut. Ive had a full hair cut with wash here before from the same length of hair and it was cheaper. So basically cause youre busy you think you can do whatever. It would of taken 5-10 minutes max to trim my hair and simply straighten it. So you want me pay 45$ for a super quick service where most of the time spent is to straighten my hair? This place is too funny. I have short hair, and she said its because I have long hair. I actually paid less the first time I came and I actually had a full cut. There are cheaper salons in Chinatown that dont rip people off. The replies from this business are funny; they pretty much didnt read my post. Obviously I can read your sign. Hair that is chin length is short...how are you going to say I had long hair? Why even reply to your yelp reviewers if you're just going to say that they are wrong and cant read. A simple 'sorry for the experience maybe it was just a miscommunication' would have been the correct way to deal with a reviewer. That was my experience not yours. I dont get anything out of it by writing reviews. Bottomline its overpriced for the service offered. You can get a whole haircut for 25$ two stores down thats equally, if not more, nice. read more

I've gotten my hair done here twice now and both times I've LOVED it. I will likely become a regular here. Joe B (not to be confused with Joey whom I'm not familiar with) does my hair. I have fine hair but there is a TON of it. This time I got a trim with layers, and for the first time, highlights. Considering how much hair I have, I was very surprised at how patient he was when he cut my hair and when he was putting in the highlights which took quite awhile but I don't care because it came out AMAZING. He even took the time afterward to straighten my hair. My boyfriend also went with me as a walk-in instead of making an appointment and Ernie cut his hair. He has thick, wavy and hair and Ernie did an amazing job. It's not too short and not too long - it's perfect! I highly recommend this place and will continue to come here whenever I want to get my hair done. read more

The service here is fantastic and the help is very friendly. The studio is small but they have done a very nice job with the space. I scheduled an appointment with Ernie (the owner) and was seen promptly. The prices are higher than I would normally pay for hair cuts (I'm a Supercuts person, usually) but I definitely think it's worth it for the quality of the cut, the friendly staff, and the fact that my hair doesn't look like I lost a fight with a weed-whacker. The location was a bit hard to find because it's tucked away in a little alley, so bring a map or GPS if you're unfamiliar with Boston's Chinatown. Throwing out some love for Fan in this review! Although she is relatively new to working on the floor at Coco Hair Studio, she has actually been cutting my hair for over a year now. There is a reason why I keep going back. I think my hair is kind of difficult to work with; most people complain about how thick it is, and how I have multiple "swirls" on the back of my head. Yeah, I get it - my hair is hard to scissor cut, but that's what I like. That's why I used to just go to any ol' random place on the cheap since everyone butchered my hair in the same way anyway. Well, Fan cuts my hair just fine. So from now on, if any hair dresser complains about how difficult it is to cut my hair (just in theory because it's not like I am going to any other hair dresser), I'll tell them to suck it, because now I know with the right amount of skill, it can be done! PS. The owner and his wife are really friendly people. If you're sitting around waiting for your appointment, they are always fun to talk to. read more

When I first moved to Boston about 3 years ago, I went to this really cool place in the South End called Liquid Hair Studios. Unfortunately, the lady there did not know how to cut Asian hair and butchered my simple layered cut. Then I went to Mie Higashimoto. They are great and Mie is a sweetie -- but it was too expensive for me. Then I found this place and have never been to another hair salon. Initially, I was worried that their cuts would be too off-the-boat-Asian for my own style, but I was quickly proven wrong. The barbers know how to give a good haircut in every style imaginable. (For example, I saw one kid getting an ombre, pink, punk mohawk once.) The prices are VERY reasonable, but be sure to bring cash because they don't take cards! This is a review for a perm I had one month ago with Earnie. Note that this hair studio does body wave perms, not curly perms. I was aware of this before I went in but still feel that my perm is a little too subtle in its waves. See pictures. I've gotten about four perms before at other places, with my most recent perm 7 months ago in Asia. This was my first perm here. My biggest issues are that it is very frizzy and dry, is high maintenance, doesn't hold the waves well, and, in my opinion, doesn't look good. In my previous perms, I never used any hair products and had pronounced waves and curls. Now it's a struggle to get any sustained definition. I've tried the Wella EI extra volume mousse that Earnie suggested, but it makes my hair feel crunchy (I don't think it's misuse either, as he used it on me before I left the studio). I've tried several deep conditioning treatments in the hopes that maybe the frizziness was just damage from the perm. I use many curl products including Oribe curl cremes, oils, and sprays which are relatively highly-reviewed. I've tried drying with a microfiber towel or tshirt instead of a regular towel. I plop and scrunch after showers. You can judge for yourself if the perm is the style you're going for (see pictures, 4 weeks after perm). Actually, the pictures now make my hair look even better than it did one month ago. Two days after my perm, when I washed it, it was super poofy (like hermione granger circa harry potter movie 1) and now it's much less frizzy. I thought about returning to the studio for them to look at my hair (maybe it's not supposed to look like this?) but didn't. Positives: + Wavy hair, more voluminous-ish + SAME DAY on a Sunday within 3 hours. Impressive + Affordable. $120 on long hair (+ Tip), which is MUCH less than any other place + Quick. Perm only took 1 hr 45 minutes. My prior perms have taken 3 hours. Negatives: - Frizzy, dry - High maintenance I would not return for a perm, since I spend 30min - 1 hour styling my hair now, which is a huge time commitment compared to my previous airdry-and-go lifestyle. I think my hair looked better before, but maybe my hair looks exactly like it's supposed to. On the other hand, though, I did see several girls having their hair colored at the same time and they looked amazing! They do blonde hair on Asians well! I remember that their hair cuts are great, too, so I would consider coming back for that. Cash only, as others have mentioned. UPDATE 11/21/17: 3/5 changed to 4/5 stars. Earnie offered me an hour-long complimentary Olaplex treatment to improve the condition of my hair. After the treatment, my hair looks and feels so much better. It is less frizzy, which has improved the definition of the waves in my hair, and is SO much softer. Earnie did a few things, which I really appreciated. 1) He welcomed feedback. This is a guy who has been doing hair since at least 1991. He clearly has been successful and knows what he is doing, but he listened to my concerns and addressed them. 2) He did not blame me. A hairdresser can easily say that the hair was too damaged before a perm, that one month after a perm is "out of the window" for liability, or that I'm not styling my hair properly. He apologized and never suggested any of those things. 3) He cares. I could tell he read my review meticulously. For example, he used Moroccan Oil instead of Wella, since he knew I didn't like the latter. 4) I arrived late, and he still welcomed me. He stayed half an hour after closing time, after all the employees had left, to finish my treatment. In addition to staying late, he trimmed my bangs for free and insisted on blowdrying my hair instead of letting me walk out with wet hair. I would absolutely come back. The perm still takes more maintenance than I'm used to, and I still need to use some products to reduce frizz and improve definition (hence the 4/5, though maybe it should be 5/5 stars). However, I think if you are clear about your goals and honest about your hair condition, it is worth trying. I plan to come back for future trims and cuts. read more

Didn't see any reviews of this salon during COVID era and there also doesn't seem to be any information on their website so I hope this is helpful! I had an appointment with Joey today and am exceptionally pleased with the results. Just ask my mom--she was nice enough to drive me and had to deal with me gushing all the way home. I think this is the best haircut I've ever had. For background, I am male and have short/medium-length thick Asian hair that's on the coarser/wavier side. It's even coarser now than it is naturally because I had it double bleached and toned silver a few months ago. As such, I always narrow the scope of barbers/hair stylists I will see to only those that are known to work well with Asian hair. Our hair is unique and it requires a unique skillset. Also, it's worth noting that I live/work in NYC. I left a couple months ago due to the pandemic and will be home in Boston for the foreseeable future. Living in NYC, I am accustomed to a much wider selection of salons, shops, and stylists, so it was harder to find what I was looking for in Boston, but I am glad I found Coco Head Hair Studio! Logistics -- From what I could see, only three clients are allowed in at a time by appointment only, and the chairs in use are stationed 6+ feet apart. I arrived a bit early when Joey was finishing up with another client and was asked to wait outside to limit the number of people in the salon. Every stylist, employee, and client wore face masks the entire time that they were in the salon. When I entered for the start of my appointment, I was immediately ushered to the sink for a hair wash. My guess is that a pre-wash is mandatory at this time, but it didn't feel forceful in any way. In fact, it was pretty relaxing and another good cautionary measure in my book, given the circumstances. After my hair wash, Joey showed me over to his chair for the start of my haircut. He looked at photos I had on my phone and listened attentively to what I wanted. He asked questions to confirm his understanding at the onset and throughout my appointment to make sure I was satisfied. He also offered his own professional opinion and suggestions based on his assessment of my hair type/length/texture, which I welcomed since I actually went for a completely new style today. Due to the lockdown, I hadn't cut my hair in nearly 3 months and my hair was relatively long, which opened the door to some different looks I'd always wanted to try. I guess you can say that was one benefit of quarantine. Joey's not much of a talker but will certainly oblige if you are one to chat. Rather, he is meticulous beyond words. You can just see the precision and focus in his eyes. After he was finished, Joey washed my hair once more, blow-dried, and styled it. I felt like a million bucks even with half my face covered by a surgical mask. ‍ Now for that one missing little baby star. Let me just say that every employee--Joey especially--showed the utmost professionalism my entire appointment. However, the service was not by any means outstanding. At its core, Coco is a no-frills Chinatown salon. In other words, it is like any other Chinatown establishment. You shouldn't expect to be knocked off your feet by the service. Now don't get me wrong, I actually don't much care for the fancy extras. In my mind, a 5-star salon at the moment is anywhere I can get a quick and amazing haircut in a safe and sanitary environment. If you are like-minded, Coco is beyond perfect. However, I do try to rate as objectively as possible, and I know many will say that the 5th star is reserved for truly exceptional experiences. I must also say that I am not sure what their protocol is for cleaning/sanitizing chairs and sink stations between clients. I didn't notice them do anything, but I also didn't notice them not do anything if that makes any sense. This is my fault for not paying better attention--sorry! But I do love Coco and Joey A LOT. Great haircut and tips provided by Earnie. I have a LOT of hair and generally get it cut about once a year in the ongoing goal of growing it out. He gave me a manageable, low-maintenance cut and took out the thickness without making my hair too thin as some stylists can do. I also forgot my picture and had to piece together exactly what I wanted from a mix of magazine photos, but he managed to get it just right. read more
