I was trying to find a nice local place for dinner here in Saginaw, and really struggled to do so. It seems like this place has mostly chain restaurants and very few independent diners. After doing some scouring, I found Coco Loco and decided to give it a whirl. Pulling up, the place looks a bit tired from the outside. I was skeptical about going in, but I decided to give it a go ahead anyway since I was already here, didn't want Texas Roadhouse down the street, not looking for fast food and felt like Mexican. Walking in the place wasn't busy but there was enough diners here that I was like okay it can't be that bad. I reviewed the menu and they do have tons of good options but tend to be on the pricier side of things. I ended up getting the Petito dinner which sounded right up my alley. It was 3 tacos that were deep fried, rice, beans and extra toppings. I guess you have a few choices of what to get in the tacos, and I went with shredded beef because its my favorite. When the food came out, I was extremely impressed with the portion size as it was absolutely massive! I couldn't even finish it because it was just so much food. The refried beans were awesome and the rice was pretty good to. I wish I would have taken a photo but I was so hungry that I didn't even think about it. The interior here is super colorful and my server was pretty good at her job. I did have to ask for extra napkins, but I always do so that's no big deal. I did ask for a bit of extra sour cream and they charged me for it?! at this point I was already $20 in the hole, so what's an extra dollar or whatever the charge was. Not the cheapest dinner or the fanciest place, but decent food and better than some of the places within the vicinity (mostly being chain restaurants.) I wish they would beautify the outside a bit and take care of the exterior of the building as it was a bit sad looking from the street. Overall a good solid meal. I love this Mexican restaurant. Every time I've ate here it's been really good. I've tried several things on the menu and have never been disappointed. My favorite is the Carne Asada. This place made me dislike all the other Mexican restaurants!! Haven't frequented taco bell since I tried this place. I've been here a few times and I always get their steak fajitas. Service is usually quick and friendly, food is also really delicious and has big portions I would get take out. Just a little more expensive which is understandable. It's in Saginaw so the outside is old and dated, wish it was closer and in a nicer spot. The inside is cozy and has a lot of nice art! read more

My husband and I love Coco Loco on Gratiot Rd! We have been on a Nacho Mixture (ground beef & shredded chicken) kick lately. We share a full size and always leave with full stomachs. Of course, filling up on chips and salsa before the meal comes doesn't help, but it's so good! Before getting on this recent "kick" I always ordered the chicken or shredded beef chimichanga dinner, which is awesome, too! Just got my dinner from there and as you can see it was the lunch size and was not worth the 20.00 I paid with tip looks like half a Tortilla I asked for it to be deep fried as it says on the description and it's not deep fried just don't understand why this place can't make what it says it's supposed to make give it a thumbs down !! Mexican restaurants are great for a few things: fast drinks, bottomless chips and salsa and decent but quick entrees at cheap prices. Sadly this place only has the chips (which are mediocre at best) for them. The "bar tender" took 30 minutes to pour a tall beer to only tell the waiter that type of beer was out. The food took well over 45 minutes to arrive at the table not all at once for only 3 orders. One last thing... don't bring my toddler a plate so hot that you're worried about them touching it because it might burn them. A toddler touches everything! I will not be returning. read more

I would NEVER eat at CoCo Loco on Gratiot again after what I just witnessed! The bar tender removed 4 used margaritas that customers were drinking from up at the bar, poured the USED margarita drinks into a bar pitcher turned around and lifted the cover off of the margarita machine and then poured their USED beverages into that machine. The bar tender then proceeded to grab their USED water glasses that they were drinking from and poured them into the same bar pitcher, turned around and lifted the cover to the margarita machine off once again and poured the USED water in. I personally witnessed this along with my Husband. I asked for a FULL Refund, contacted the Owner and also contacted Saginaw Health Department. I would advise to NEVER EVER eat or drink at any CoCo Loco as I personally believe this was a Trained behavior. Be Aware! read more

I debated between giving 3 and 4 stars. Honestly, it's about a 3 1/2, but was less than a four because I pick Mexican restaurants primarily over the salsa. Okay, so the salsa is verrrryyyy mild. The chips are fresh and warm but if you are used to a fresh salsa that tastes like anything other than puréed tomatoes, this is not going to impress you. The service is very friendly and attentive. We got the fajita burrito, shrimp fajitas, and a lunch special. I got the fajita burrito and I will say it was pretty good. I liked the queso, the veggies inside, and the beans and rice. I wish it came with some sour cream and pico on the side, just for a bit more freshness. The shrimp fajitas looked good, but not particularly impressive. Same with the lunch special of a taco and chili relleno. The chilli relleno was flat and soggy but was okay at best. All and all I'd probably still come by again in the future but I feel there are better options in this area. read more

This isn't the best Mexican Food around, you can find more authentic & better Mexican food from El Farolito in the marketplace & way better prices! I paid $24 for one meal for myself, the Cancun grill mix, it came with no cheese, they didn't even give me the lettuce, tomatoes, guac, & beans that come with the meal! I had to ask and they still didn't put the cheese dip on the plate & they had no beans, but still charged me for the whole meal, instead of half which is what they gave me, half of a meal. I've tried coming back to see if it was just that day but no I've been let down every single time. You're better off going to Taco Bell, I wish Cuatros Amigos was still open because Coco loco is a disgrace. read more

While our waitress was very kind the service was not great, and the food was a joke. I ordered chicken tacos, all three tacos had different items in it. One only had green peppers. One only had onion. I also ordered "bean dip" which was 95% queso with a tea scoop of bean. The margarita is basically pure sugar with very little tequila - I made the distinct mistake of enthusiastically ordering an extra large (which is about the size of a baseball bat) so I was stuck with a literally massive subpar drink. The salsa tasted identical to marina sauce. Very confusing. All in all, this experience was surreal it was so bad. I don't understand how someone can send a plate of food as screwed up as mine was out of a kitchen. read more

I used to go here routinely for lunch and it used to be a fair deal. Every time I stop in the prices go up several more dollars and the food stays the same. At this point it's got to be the most expensive lunch menu in town and average food at best. Also my last visit resulted in them over charging my debit card by close to $10. I made this discovery on my bank website several days after my visit. It has been eliminated from my list of options for lunch permanently at this point. read more

Called on the phone to place an order. I was asked how am I paying. I said I can pay what ever way you want me too. I tried to place my order but was stopped. She told me I had to pay over the phone to place a order, or come in place the order and pay cash. I told her I was driving and on my way there. She again said I had to pay upfront. I said I'm driving and cannot do that. I told her if you dont want my order ill just go to another place. This seems so simple. Call in your order, go get it. Pay for it when you pick it up. I ended up pulling over looking up the number to another place. Called them placed my order, went there and paid WHEN I GOT THERE!!!! SO SIMPLE Just wont be going here again. My wife and I have often dined at Coco Locos in Bay City, for lunch buffet on east side and for dinner on Euclid Ave. Last night there was a workplace dinner at Coco Loco Saginaw Bay Road, and I was the last to arrive. The place had few customers, but a couple with a Great Dane dog came in, were seated next to us. At first they kept their dog in their far corner, but they soon let him move around to my side. Now, I have a friend who's an emotionally disabled Army veteran with a support dog, and its harness is carefully marked--this one had only a polka-dot fabric on its harness. Most of my co-workers were merely amused by it; the server could have asked our permission before seating them there, for most other tables were free. It was deeply unpleasant to have a huge stinky dog seated right next to me IN A RESTAURANT. I will not be back to Coco Loco. read more

We ordered 2 orders of carne asada tacos and the menu says 14.59 we were charged 18.59 each and when I questioned the waiter Anthony he told me the prices went up. Ok that's fine but maybe inform the customer that the price is 4$ more before they order it. Ridiculous 8$ more and not told about it. Then when I complained on their Facebook page they told me there's a sign on the hostess station saying some prices have gone up. Who goes to a restaurant and reads the signs? As a TEXAS Boy... gotta admit... I kinda liked it! No.. .it's not authentic Mexican food (who would ever eat that stuff?)... it's Tex-Mex and it's Delicious! It was during lunch, so I didn't get to make my way through the menu... but the chips were hot and fresh... the salsa tasted a little like tomato paste, and it could use a little help-but it actually wasn't too bad. I had the fajitas... they were a huge mound of food, with onions, green peppers, and fire roasted tomatoes that exploded in your mouth! Sour Cream and Guac on the side... no upcharge! I had a chimichanga for lunch for only $8. My whole plate was covered. It came with rice, beans, sour cream, guac...It was delicious. I'm usually one to eat everything on my plate, but there was so much food that I actually took half home. There was even a lady in the corner making what looked like tortillas. Yes, identical to Los Cuatros Amigos, but that's not a bad thing. The food at both places is quite good. Not completely authentic, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest... good food's good food. The bad thing is that I will say you should expect your incredibly good looking girlfriend to be mentally undressed by a creepy Russian man who's eating with his family. I'm not sure I've ever seen such intense staring from somebody in a public place. Maybe he just wants to kill her. I don't know. It was slightly uncomfortable. ...Okay, anyway, Coco Loco's pre' tasty. My girlfriend got a chimichanga that wasn't fried (uh.. a burrito), but it was taken care of quickly without issue. Buenos días! Coco Loco fue fabuloso! Our first time last night and it was a great experience. The food was delicious, server was most excellent (and super cute). I got the grilled steak and onion tacos - yummy! My wife got enchiladas supremos and that too was delicious - she swapped me for a taco! Her portion was hUgE, it would make a great dish to share. Chips and salsa hit the table immediately BAM! Great chips, salsa is very mild and on the sweet side. Nothing a little habanero can't tweak. Guac is basically an avocado slurry - dude, where's the tomato, onion!!? I still ate it cuz I flippin love the avocado! Bottom line; we found a next bestie for Mexican food. read more

The complimentary salsa that was provided is not very spicy and a little Prego-ish so we ordered the Spicy Pico de Gallo and mixed it in - DELICIOUS! Upon seeing what we were doing our server told us that he loved to mix the Pico de Gallo with their Queso Salsa Mexicana and brought us out a small dish to try. I mixed them together and agreed with him that it was an excellent combination. The jalepenos in the Spicy Pico de Gallo were a little too much for my sister so our server was tested on the drink refills and he kept up with flying colors. I ordered a wet burrito and she ordered the taco salad bowl. HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE: She got the salad without the bowl and got all of the goodies (sour cream, guacamole, cheese, etc) on the side so that she could enjoy a gluten free, healthful meal. The burrito was good although maybe a little less flavorful than I would have expected. The meat was quite bland and just looked like your regular ground hamburger meat. Once I got my check, however, I changed my mind and decided that this was a "Great Value". The two of us had the appetizer of Pico de Gallo, our 2 entrees, and 2 beverages (non-alcoholic) for $19.78. In any event, every single thing I tasted was better than what you would be served at Crapplebees, Dead Lobster or any of the other surrounding chain behemoths of restaurants and Coco Loco also has something that is priceless: Service. When we were finished we had a chance to speak with the owner and WHOA - this is a guy with passion. He actually owns three other restaurants and is opening up another Coco Loco (I believe it will have the same name) in Bay City. We remarked on how fun all the colors were: The chairs, tables and walls are all covered with murals. He pointed out one of the murals on the wall and that it showed the entire process of making Tequila, which he had learned in Mexico. It was plain to see that this guy loves Tequila! I would venture to guess that he has an assortment available at his restaurant that you will not be able to find at any other restaurants in the city. As he talked about his restaurant(s) we could see how much this restauranteer is striving to create an environment that is unlike anywhere else where people can come and enjoy themselves and create new experiences. He has a live mariachi come and play from time to time and even has a station out in the restaurant where you can watch the cooks make tortillas! I would have loved to give them a 5 star review but could not because the food didn't quite hit it. Although it is great for the price - they can do better. Any place that has a menu over 1 page can probably improve on something, and their menu is I believe 8 pages. But what they lack in robust flavor and authenticity, they make up for ten fold in atmosphere and service. We would go back. In fact, I would say that the next time we are in Saginaw we might make it a destination for their margaritas, which are HUGE! read more

This is the second location I've been to here in Saginaw, MI. I like this location better than the other one. Service: We were greeted and seated right away. The hostess was friendly. Our waitress was friendly too. She came back every so often to check on us, and was quick to bring things we requested (more water or more napkins). Food: I ordered the steak fajita but minus the tomatoes. It was good! It was a lot of food though. I took home half of it and had it for lunch the next day. Drinks: The house margaritas are pretty good. I like mine blended or frozen (as they call it at the restaurant). They have a full menu of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, so everyone can have something. Note: I will definitely be back when I crave some Mexican food! read more

Looking at all the good reviews, I guess I ordered the wrong item. It could also be because I have different standards, being from California. I know it is Tex Mex but even still I was expecting better. To play it safe, I ordered one of their specialties, Cancun Grill Mix (14.99 USD). It came out extremely fast and the plate was very hot so I guess it was just microwaved. Unfortunately not only the chicken but also the rice was covered in the advertised "cheese dip" which made it like weird mac and cheese but with rice instead of noodles. The chicken was dry but that's what you get with breast meat. Sadly I ended up leaving almost all of the chicken and rice, and I hate wasting food. Guacamole was ok (I've had way worse in Denmark), as were the pico de gallo and beans. However the shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the chips & salsa were great. The same thing as Los Cuatro Amigos down the street. They even bought the same incredibly tacky decorated tables and chairs. Let's start off with the alcohol. They have a A LOT of tequila. Like 40 different kinds. Be careful because a few of them are $15 or 25 a shot. They have quite a few Mexican beers as well. The margaritas on the other hand, yuck. A huge sour mess. I've been here with a ton of people and nobody finishes them. They will wreck your stomach. They're huge but they are disgusting. Moving on to the food, it's hit or miss. It's scary how fast the food comes out. I'm sure they're just picking stuff out of the fridge and microwaving it. The rice is a dry mess and the beans are just basically a brown liquid. I realize it's hard for a place to keep a good texture on beans and rice since they have to sit for so long, but now I just order al a carte, no point in the dinners that include the beans and rice. The enchiladas come in a red tomato sauce which is a little bit weird. The other Mexican restaurants in the area serve them in a brown chile sauce, so just make sure you know what you're getting if that's what you're expecting. The tamales are pretty gross. Your safest bet is to do what I do, and just order anything that is mostly meat or covered in cheese. The chicken chimichanga is probably frozen but it's covered in liquid cheese and you can't argue with that. The carne asada tacos, quesadilla, and the carnitas are all pretty good. Once in a while you will get some meat that is just insanely salty. Not sure if they aren't tasting the food or if there's one cook without tastebuds or what. If it's so salty that you need a whole glass of water to get your mouth back to normal, just send it back. Some things are really odd. A server kept bringing out flour tortillas when corn was ordered. He did it 3 times in a row, and the final time he stayed at the table while we opened the foil that the tortillas are in. Apparently they aren't allowed to do that before they bring them to the table? The chips and salsa are good but do not pay for a side of guacamole. It's like this green flavorless pudding. Very runny. If you're expecting a chunky guacamole with pieces of tomato and onion in it, you're in for a surprise. Gross. Also, don't go when wrestling or a soccer game is on. Nobody will come check on your table and your food will come out very slowly and your order will be all messed up. All the staff will be sitting in the booths by the TV watching WWE. read more

And my husband usually finishes my meal and he was so full from his that he couldn't. The food was excellent and the servers was wonderful! I recommend the fajitas, think the waiters should try some food before they start waiting, and don't like that you get charged for extra tortillas (three is not enough for the huge plate of food).
