While visiting Michigan, I stopped into Gilley's and ordered a custom breakfast plate because I'm on a special diet. It was so good that I came back twice. I've jokingly started calling it the "El San Diego" breakfast plate. The pork was flavorful, the food was fresh, and everything was cooked perfectly. What really stood out was the service. On my return visit, the owner remembered my order and personally whipped up the same El San Diego breakfast plate for me again. It was just as incredible the second time. Friendly staff, great food, great ambiance, and genuine 5 star hospitality. As a Southern California Mexican food snob, I can honestly say Gilley's exceeded my expectations. Having lived in San Diego, we call this a "California burrito" (carne asada, fries, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese), and it was done right . Now, maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought you literally fried soft corn shells to make hard shells. They weren't as good as the hard shells. That crunch was indeed missed. So glad we did! The concept is somewhat similar to Chipotle--you choose your style (bowl, burrito, salad, etc.), then your protein, rice, beans and toppings. But that's where the comparison ends. The food at Lugo's is prepared in the kitchen like a traditional restaurant rather than sitting precooked in containers on an assembly line. And you can taste the difference. Everything was incredibly flavorful without being overly spiced or seasoned. Each ingredient was seasoned just enough to let its own flavor shine through, but when you put everything together, it created a really flavorful, well-balanced meal. We also learned that they source their ingredients locally from area producers as much as possible, and you can absolutely taste that freshness in the food. It's a practice that really sets Lugo's apart. The service was incredibly welcoming, crazy fast, and the food was excellent. But for me, the stars of the show were Lugo's house-made sauces. We tried the jalapeño ranch, salsa, roasted pepper hot sauce and green chile VERY hot sauce. All were good--and I like heat--but that green chile sauce was even too hot for me!
