I got my first tattoo at Code of Conduct and I'm so happy with it. I took a look at the portfolios of each of the artists and that led me to work with Jake Ames. From the start of our communication, he was extremely responsive and answered all my questions. It took a while for me to finally pull the trigger, but when I did, he was able to squeeze me in fairly quickly since it was a pretty small tattoo. Loved his work ethic and the quality of his work. He walked me through the whole process and made sure I loved the weight of the lines and the placement. In the middle of everything, he even recommended that I take a quick breather and drink some water since I started to get really warm during the process. (I had no idea your body temp can fluctuate as a reaction to getting a tattoo.) When my tattoo was done, I really appreciated that he talked through the care process thoroughly. Love my tattoo! Reason for giving it 3-stars: Pricing I really had a good time at CoC but I left feeling scammed. My sister and I's tattoo artist was Jaime. It was both our first tattoos. We did walk ins she got 2 tattoos and only had to pay $100. She got one behind her shoulder (medium) and one on her wrist (small). I thought that was great. Then it came time for my tattoo. I got a small wrist tattoo and when it was time to pay he said that it will be $100. Apparently, he charged based off how long it takes and the minimum is $100. Both our tattoos only took less then and hour. Make sure you ask beforehand how much your tattoo is going to cost. If I would have known it was going to be $100 for a small tattoo I would have gotten more tattoos. But I do plan to go back for future tats, I'm just going to be more aware. read more

Ralph Corona is an amazing artist! He created a custom mandala neck tattoo for me. This is my first large piece and I was super nervous, but he made the entire experience light-hearted, fun and comfortable. He was so precise and particular about getting the placement just right, and his line work was impeccable! While I took a peek after the lining was done, the shading was like a trust fall... I let him just run with it! I was thrilled with the result. After four hours in the chair, I reached my pain threshold so I still need to go back for a bit more shading, but Im in love with my tattoo. Great space, great artists, great vibe. Just got a tattoo yesterday. The people were very nice and the place appeared to be very clean. I came in with a good idea of what I wanted and provided images. The stencil was shown to me before placement and I really liked it. However, during the tattooing more ink was added to areas that weren't colored in or drawn in from the original stencil that was placed on me. This was added without my permission and had he told me that he was going to add more I would've said no. I approved the original stencil placed, not more! Not sure what to do now as this is permanent. Ugh read more

I have never gone to a tattoo shop that was opened for business and no one was available until I went to this place. The tattoo artists (I guess) were sitting around acting nonchalant, one even said he was off work. I was recommended to go here but I was turned away. It was only 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Don't they close at 10pm? Guess they didn't want my money or business. Excellent shop. Laid back, chill atmosphere and clean clean clean. Everyone is friendly, extremely talented, and the aesthetic of the place is awesome. The book collection is funny, it looks like a bunch of college books that someone choose not to sell back, mashed up with some great lit. I didn't take a long look at the clothes on offer, but the art on the walls is amazing, honestly if had more money, I'd have bought a couple. Walked in here on a Thursday evening around 6:30 and was seen right away without an appointment. Jaime did a mediocre job on an Anaheim Ducks logo tattoo on my left outside ankle. He was nice and thorough but the final product is still flaking and scabbing THREE AND A HALF MONTHS LATER. The ink is missing in several areas and the total cost for the black and white tattoo was $170, which is expensive for the quality and size of the tattoo. Definitely do NOT recommend this place if you want a tattoo in South Loop! read more

I first discovered Code of Conduct a few years ago when I was looking to do a cover-up for my first tattoo (done when I was fifteen and stupid!). It was an ugly star design on my wrist that I was told would be easy to cover-up by many artists, but it had never felt quite right and I felt very rushed. When I came in to the shop and spoke to Allie Sider, he advised me to look through everyone`s portfolio. I immediately fell in love with Allie's work and felt that it was very in touch with my personality and style. We had a consultation where he guided me through deciding what I wanted. I really appreciated that he didn`t just agree with me just to seal the deal. The orchids that we ended up doing are so beautiful and were such a natural cover-up. Since then, I have only gone to Allie to get my work done. We are currently almost done with a sleeve and I can`t even imagine how amazing it`s been turning out. I trust him completely and know that he will give me his honest opinions. He really takes the time to listen to what you want while still adding his own flair. There`s been many times that I come up with crazy ideas and I`m so grateful that he guides me into the right directions! I know that he would never steer me wrong! I`ve been to many shops and tried a few different artists before pairing up with Allie. I fully regret my past experiences and know now that tattoo artists and shops should be held at a higher level of expectation! Approximately 75% of my upper body is covered in tattoos. I follow a large number of tattoo blogs, have looked through most of the big-name Chicago-based artists' portfolios, gotten work from half a dozen people, and most of my friends have one or more tattoos and similar obsessions with wearable art. And when anyone asks me for advice on where to get a new piece, I only have one answer: "Code of Conduct." So far, my girlfriend, her friend, one of my best friends, my boss, and another colleague have all taken this advice with incredible results. The shop: The atmosphere is clean and bright without being clinical somehow. Workstations are arranged around a large common area so everyone can watch and learn from each other. There's a lot of hovering and "that's awesome how did you do it?" among the artists, which I enjoy. The walls are decorated with sketches, oil paintings, photographs, and other forms of art, all of which is created or curated by the staff. With no piercers on their payroll, unlike other tattoo shops Code of Conduct is exclusively about the art (and a touch of fashion thrown in), with less of a focus on walk-in business and more focus on custom work than some may be used to at other "tattoo and piercing factories." The staff: So far I only wear work by one of the artists at Code of Conduct - more on him shortly - but in the many many hours I've spent in the shop, I have seen incredible work spring from under the hands of every member of the staff. Each definitely has his own style and strengths but they all share knowledge, advice, techniques, and a strong drive to constantly better their craft. Plus, they're friendly, hilarious, and very laid-back. Because they take their work very seriously (like any artist should), if you're looking to walk in with a google image of someone else's tattoo that you think is really cool and want the same thing, this probably isn't the place for you. If you want an incredible, unique, custom piece of art that requires you to give some effort and forethought, research portfolios and make an appointment. My guy: I first explored Allie Sider's digital portfolio back in 2009 and was immediately jealous of the people who got to wear his ink. Even from a distance, his attention to minutiae and skill with black-and-grey were mind-boggling, and I can personally guarantee you that it only gets more impressive up close. I'm a visual artist and lighting designer by trade, so you can imagine how floored I was to find a tattoo artist that actually thought about light sources and shadows! Allie manages to work in some of the finest, tiniest details I've ever seen, his lines are always super clean, and his shading techniques vary from intricate pencil-thin crosshatching to sublimely smooth watercolor, depending on the piece. He has a very light hand and gets it done without chewing your skin up, so his work heals much faster than others' (I'm talking like a week, week and a half at most!). Plus he's a great guy that I can actually have a conversation with for hours on end - and all my friends who wear his work agree. In the five years I've been visiting him, Allie has done my entire upper back, a small piece on my left arm, and we're halfway done with a full shoulder-to-wrist sleeve on my right arm. For black-and-grey (he does do color sometimes, it's just "not his thing"), as far as I'm concerned there's none better. I'll keep coming back to Allie at Code of Conduct until I run out of skin. read more

Besides being able to accommodate you with any tattoo style you wish for from their talented artists, they also have a really fresh retail space full of cool Nixon watches and bags, Von Zipper sunglasses, and apparel from upcoming labels. Jason HoodRich tattooed a perfect little anchor on me and it was exactly what I wanted. He helped me get the sizing and the colors just right before he began and made me feel real comfortable the entire time. Not only did he do a flawless job (the lines are seriously PERFECT), but he was cracking me up with his jokes the entire time. Got my first tattoo done here with my younger sister. We're out of state, but love Chicago so we decided to make it one of our most memorable visits yet. The place was very clean, had some of the most friendly people I've meet and they make sure you get what you want. We did the walk in as it was a spur of the moment idea, but the wait time not not bad and they checked in with you routinely as you wait. The price is not bad at all as they do amazing work. Ralph did my arm piece back in March. It was absolutely beautiful. I was a walk in, but it only took him 30 minutes to design the perfect tattoo from the photos I showed him. They had Tron playing on the flat screen, and Ralph kept me distracted with conversation while he did the work. The piece itself only took an hour and a half. I have a couple other small tattoos, so this was a big step up for me, but Ralph made me feel relaxed and comfortable the whole time. Very chill guy. To this day, I get a compliment on my tattoo at least 3-4 times a week. I love it more than I could possibly say, and I can't speak more highly of Ralph himself. TATTOO ARTIST WITH VISION! I was visiting Chicago from California and I came across some of BJStorms work on Instagram. After a few text I came in and the first drawing wasn't what I was really looking for, but BJ, without blinking an eye, redrew the tat for me no problem and the new one was badass as fuck! I got a very simple tattoo on my wrist and it came out exactly how I wanted it. Klaus did a great job and one week later, it is healing without any issues.
