I showed them a picture of a cardinal tattoo I had in mind for my forearm, and they not only worked with me on the design within my budget but also got it designed within an hour. Mike, the artist, was incredibly skilled and ensured I felt comfortable with the placement of the design. Place is a nice small and clean place. I had a tattoo done by Marty Mac and he's super chill. What I like about him that I noticed from other artists don't is that he wants to get to know you and what you do. Most of my tattoos artists I go to I have to struggle with small talk. His work is clean and fast. I also had a tattoo done by Brad. He is super sweet dude and his work is clean and detailed. OK, This isn't "me" reviewing it, it'll be my husband since he's the one who went but he doesn't want to deal with his own yelp account. From here on out, it'll be Jeff, my husband: Taylor Street Tattoo is where you go to get tattooed. I know how simple that sounds. How elementary. But that's all that really needs to be said. If you want some bullcrap fake garbage go somewhere else. If you want a tattoo by people who know how to do it right and have no problems being honest, go here. I've only had 1 tattoo done here, about a year ago by "Turbo" (Chris.) I've been too busy/broke to get another one. The pricing is dead on, in the city (where taxes/insurance/rent is much higher) the prices do not get better unless you know some schmuck doing them in his bathroom at home. You get what you pay for. I've seen more expensive shops that have had way worse work rolling out. You will not get better work in this city, especially for the prices. Again, it's a tattoo shop. No glitz, no bullcrap, real honest people, be respectful and they'll respect you. If they're busy tattooing someone, wait, would you want your artist to stop mid work to go talk to someone else? Just wait or comeback or make an appointment. Not a big stink. It has the atmosphere a tattoo shop should have. Honesty and hard work. I've only decided to write this review because I feel there are too many negative reviews for this place and unjustly so (in my opinion.) I'll be going back soon. I'll upload a pic of what I had done too. Turbo had very little to work with source wise (black and white blurry line drawing) and made it come to life. If I had the cash and time I'd have returned a million times by now. But I do try to push everyone this way. OH, also I noticed yelp says they take credit cards. When I went, cash only. I went in today for the "get what you get" promotion they have. It was fun. I got a dolphin in space. The owner of the shop did mine and my friends small tattoos. In the car on the ride home we both were like "did that hurt as much as it did for you?" Turns out they're heavy handed and tattoo dry (or a dif technique than I'm used to?) which made it v painful. I have tattoos all over and this one stings so much. I'm a natural bleeder, so I'm waiting to see what it looks like healed. We did not have any customer service complaints though. I thought the staff was friendly and fun and encouraged us to come back. I would consider going back, once I see how the tattoo heals. read more

My family and I came as a walk in to get family tattoos. When we got there (I forgot the guys name but he has a beard!) welcomes us and explained the aftercare process and how the ink will spread. We were a party of 5 that couldn't decide on anything and the shop was more than patience while we gathered our thoughts. When we decided on something, John Wayne (artist) was able to sketch it out for us. They printed out more than one size so we can see how small or big. The process was extremely quick and painless. John was great and super nice. The guy at the counter has EXCELLENT customer service and is VERY knowledgeable about where to correctly place a tattoo for it's size and detail. This place is fantastic! Had several tattoos from several of the talented artists here and they heal amazingly and the line work is stellar. I don't get the ridiculous reviews below, especially the girl who got upset because she couldn't get a $20 letter tattoo. I mean where in the hell do you think you could go and get a $20 and if you can't afford a $60 tattoo, you shouldn't be getting one. Also another point her comment, anything that would be less than $60, would just be waste of the artist time, supplies, etc. Every shop I have ever been to has shop minimums. Being an artists (not tattoo, but graphic designer) people need to realize that your paying for the art plus the value of the artist and supplies. John and Jason are both amazing artists and I look forward getting future tattoos. My partner and I have have over 8 tattoos combined from artists in this shop, all of which healed amazingly, are vibrant, and top notch quality. Lastly, to the person who seems to think this place is disgusting, it is one of the cleanest shops I have been to in Chicago. Artists are decent and Ricardo was very nice, his flash art on the walls are also beautiful. However, the man at the front desk named John is the rudest person I've come across at a tattoo shop, and after reading reviews on both here and Google, he is a serial a$$h0le and we're not the only ones to think so. I have around 15 tattoos ranging from $120-$500 not including the tip, and this shop is definitely overpriced. Quoted me $350 for a baseball sized colored traditional tattoo and after overhearing my friend and I talk about leaving for another shop he quoted $250 and "simplified" it. This is a decent price, especially for a big city shop, but the customer service ruined it. If you're going for your first tattoo, DONT and pick another shop. Dismissive and rude to me when I walked in to set up an appointment almost a week in advance. No one should ever feel belittled in a tattoo shop because they're not visibly tatted or are new to the shop/area. 5+ artists at multiple shops and by far the worst I've ever been treated. I tip 20%-40% for all of my tattoos, this is the first shop that convinced me to leave a $0 tip and I don't feel bad at all. Never write reviews, but tattoos are personal/permanent/expensive/etc. and service matters 100%. read more

I came into Taylor Street Tattoos two days ago for my very first tattoo. I came in on a Monday, and it wasn't really busy when I arrived so I was greeted as soon as I came in. Chad, one of the tattoo artists asked what I was there for, and I told him that I wanted a tattoo of a very classic swallow bird and he pointed me in the direction of the wall of classic tattoos and told me to check out the page that was full of old school swallows. I wanted my first tattoo to be huge. I wanted it to cover my left shoulder blade, and had only intended to get the linework and no fill-ins, but was later convinced that color would be way more awesome and he was right. I love my tattoo so much, and for my first I feel like the scale of it, and the detail is awesome. I only had so much cash for the first sizing that I was offered (would have been $350), so I asked how much smaller the tat would have to be for $300, which is all I had, and that size was almost just as huge. I only ended up paying $260 after it was all done- and I think it was worth it. It covers my entire shoulder blade, and is in color. Tis AWESOME! Maybe it's just me, but getting the tattoo didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would. Maybe that's just my own personal pain tolerance. I have no idea. When the tattoo was done, Chad told me that I was a 'great sitter'. I was super still the entire time and this made it really easy for him to get my tattoo done in such great time. While getting bandaged I was run through all the things that I should do to care for my tattoo as it healed. Chad gave me him card to call him if I had any questions about the healing process of my new tat and in case I had a bad reaction to anything, blah blah blah. I mean yeah- the space is small, but it's a fucking tattoo parlor. Not a lounge! I have no complaint about the interior or size of this place whatsoever. As long as my tattoo parlor is safe and sanitary, and produces awesome work I care about nothing else. They are, they are and they DO so go here for yourself. I've gotten 4 tattoos and my nose pierced here. Justin did my nose piercing and totally had me laughing the whole time... the piercing is really clean and his dedication was really great to see. My nose never bled, never got infected, no pus, no scabbing, no nothing... it was great. Really, it only took a second and was less painful than having a nose hair plucked out. Beware: their nose studs and rings are really pretty pricey but they all get sterilized and Justin will size them to fit you just right. For tattoos I got all 4 of mine done by Lana Wingo. I like her a lot and her son is a little cutie. For a while I felt like she was not a fan of mine but I think she had me pegged as a different kind of person... dare i say... tramp stamp, butterfly/dolphin tattoo person? I believe we're over it and I really enjoy her tattooing though there's a few things I'd like to have done that supposedly aren't possible even though I've seen them done other places... I think our communication is just off. She makes the tattoo as painless as possible and holds the perfect amount of conversation. I do think you pay more here than at other shops but I wanted my tattoos that day and I'd just prefer to have a female tattoo artist do them. Check them out and see if you like their work. read more
