It is just so great to have a farmers market in this part of Dorchester!…read more The market is held from 9am-12 noon every Saturday, May though October, in the parking lot at the A.J. Wright plaza in Fields Corner. Get there early if you want the best selection, as they run out of the most popular items pretty early. I love fresh peaches and pears when in season, so I try to be there at 9am on the dot. No frills-- no wandering minstrels or artisan cupcakes, just bins of fresh produce and a few tables set up for weighing and paying. There seem to be two farms stands operating here... a family run farm called Berberian out of Northborough, and a Vietnamese farm stand. I don't think they take credit cards, I have always paid cash. They do take WIC and food stamps, and a large portion of the customers pay with these. The produce is fresh, delicious, and seasonal of course. The corn is amazing. The beets are amazing, with glossy gorgeous greens still attached, $2.50 for a bunch. The leeks are also incredible and so cheap... $1.50 or $2.00 for a bunch that would cost you 6 bucks at Shaws. Fresh herbs of all kinds, squashes, big juicy tomatoes, green beans, carrots, onions, potatoes, chard, collards, etc etc etc... we buy all of our produce here in the summer. Last weekend we went home with 45 pounds of produce, for about $50 dollars. Can't beat it.

A refreshingly non-Yuppie market with limited selection but great prices…read more I attended for the first time today, even though I am told this market has been operating for 35 years. There were two produce vendors and a booth in which the Boston Cyclists' Union was tuning up old bikes for free. One vendor had great Asian and other ethnic veggies cheap--for $2, I bought enough Caribbean spinach to feed an army. The other vendor (the guy who told me he'd been coming for 35 years) had his produce on the ground in giant tubs. No frills, but effective. His corn was stunning and I got a nice head of lettuce, some carrots, a peach and a nectarine for short money. Definitely worth a visit if it is local for you and if you are looking for farm fresh at an affordable price. If you want the latest amazing baked goods, jams, jellies, honey and gourmet delicacies galore, this is not the place! This market is located in the Park Street Shopping Center parking lot. I was the first to review it and and I used the address of McDonald's which is the closest business in the shopping center to the market. Listed hours are Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, but the Asian veggie vendor was already closing by 11:20 a.m.--so come early. The acceptance of credit cards may vary depending on staffing; when I was there the person with the card machine had left.

I found people were packing up early so consider it more like 1-5pm. It was pricier then I thought it would be. I know its great to support the locals so I don't mind shelling out an extra few bucks to have locally grown items. There were about 3 veggie vendors all around the same prices. I got a small watermelon for $3 and a melon for $2. The bakery items were limited to cookies at $2 each or bags of 6 for $7 at another table. Then small loafs of bread. The pie vendor had a huge selection, I found the sample I had a bit syrupy though. The jelly person let me sample some mixed berry jam that was very tasty. For $6 a jar I might go back for some when I run out. There was a nice couple selling potted herbs for cheap. They also gave me some great tips on why some herbs grow stronger then others. Other booths were honey, fresh fish, and some home made items. Plenty of parking near the wharf.

It's definitely not SOWA, Copley or any major metropolitan farmer's Market like the Marche Jean Talon in Montreal. There's a good assortment of vendors, however. There were a number of people selling pies and other dessert items, several options for fruits and veg and herbs. There's a stand selling coffee, too. Burke's seafood was here as well as some farms selling cheese. I don't love that it's only open on Thursdays from 1-6. So, if you have a 9-5 job and a normal commute, well, guess you are SOL. Why can't they have this on Saturday or later into the evening?

Finally! JP's…read morefarmer's market options have left a lot to be desired. Until now. I'm so thrilled that we finally have a legit, large market with an incredible selection of vendors right in my backyard (almost literally). The market is the brainchild of my friend and neighbor, Kate, and she's worked tirelessly over the last year putting this thing together. All that hard work has created an incredible addition to our neighborhood. Yesterday I bought lamb chorizo sausage, locally made honey, kale grown by the cutest high school kids ever, organic eggs, hummus, and signed up for a weekly fish CSA. I had to stop myself from buying cheese, cupcakes, chocolate, donuts, and a really cute painting. So many awesome things to buy! Kate & her crew of volunteers have curated a diverse group of vendors with a little something for everyone. You can pretty much get anything you'd need/want from these vendors: The Buckle Farm Foxboro Cheese Co. Great Cape Baking Co. John Crow Farm Mei-Mei Street Kitchen Red's Best Fish Seta's Mediterranean (I'm eating her hummus right now. It's so freakin' good) Stillman's at the Turkey Farm Stillman's Farm The Cupcakory The Food Project Urban Hydr-O Farmers Vianne Chocolat Yard Birds Here's hoping the market's success continues- because I want this back in my neighborhood this summer! As a hilarious bonus, they put John Crowe and Stillman's meat vendors right across the aisle from each other one week, and the glares going back and forth between them made my a day a better one. We found these guys about a month ago, and are eating a truly unbelievable of pickles now. They're stunning. They have my pregnant wife's seal of approval, and... well, you probably know what that means.

You never know from one shopping day for the next if they're gonna give you the hairy eyeball or they're gonna be helpful. One example: I had some questions and I asked the people at the stand and they were like oh yeah just go to our website and send a message and maybe back it up with a phone call. I called three times over. Two weeks and I sent two emails. No one ever got back to me. And it was really important that I discussed some things health related things and I simply couldn't get an answer. So next time I was at the stand, I told the people what it happened and the person I was talking to literally just shrugged their shoulders and trying to be funny they said in a cartoon voice, "well, tough beans!" Not cool. Really not cool.

I really appreciate that given the small space available the priority is given to fresh foods (produce, fish, meat) rather than other small businesses like candles or tote bags that you see at larger markets. I do wish we were able to have the Tuesday market available all year instead of just summer, but I'm glad Saturdays at least are all year. As other reviewers have shared, prices are not cheap but the quality is exceptional. If we were able to get to use more of the parking lot to bring in more stalls that would be awesome, but until then I'm happy with our little baby market.

What's good varies from year to year and week to week. This week's find was fantastic Heirloom tomatoes and the best cantaloupe, hands down, I have ever eaten. I shared it with a friend and she loved it as much as I did! I also bought Apple Cider bread, which was delicious. The market has moved since last year. It is now located right next to the Ashmont T Station. Neighborhood buzz is this is supposed to help increase foot traffic to the market (and I hope it does) but makes parking more difficult. I had to park semi-illegally a couple blocks away. Next time maybe I'll bicycle! I arrived around 6:30 and it was still going strong. Market is open July 9th through October.
