Impressive backstory. In1906 Gunichi Tamiyasu, eighteen years old, left his farming family in Hiroshima, Japan, to board a ship bound for San Francisco. He made his way from California to Oregon, laying track for the railroad, then fell in love with the beauty of Hood River and leased some land and began his orchards. In 1941 after the outbreak of WWII he and his family were taken from their home and forcibly relocated and interned. After the war ended the family returned to Hood River to find their orchards overgrown, their equipment stolen, and every window in their house smashed.
