GMC had been unable to locate a new (that is to say "on a shelf for the past nineteen years") rear differential for the car. They had, however, unearthed a used assembly, but eventually determined it to be unsatisfactory for some unspecified reason. After a wasted morning, I was summarily dismissed with a greasy handshake, an excessive diagnostics bill and best wishes for finding a suitable mechanic to fix the problem that GM-trained technicians were unable to resolve. I found just such a mechanic across from the Holiday station in St. Boni. Kyle (the eponymous namesake of the Bearded Mechanic brand) searched the Internet for a proper rear differential and--in less than five minutes--located a new (unused) one. Kyle's sunny optimism was a welcome change from the apathy that was prevalent at the General Motors dealership. Kyle and his employee Isaiah (also a bearded mechanic) repaired the car in a single day at a reasonable cost. (The lavish price of the differential was set by the online seller.) My car now runs flawlessly and I couldn't be more pleased. If there is a drawback to having a car serviced by The Bearded Mechanic(s), it's that exceptional service inevitably results in a waiting list. A little over a week ago my driver spun a piston crank and limped into their establishment. They call me and tell me no metal in the oil so we should be able to fix it. We are all happy and a huge weight is lifted off of our chests. Next morning it is slammed back on it. Well no sir, the very sweet lady calls to say, we only checked on the dipstick and not the oil pan. You have plenty of shavings in your oil. Talk about bursting your bubble. So we are - Ok what are options? Well you can get a REBUILT motor for $30k or a new one from Dodge dealer for $40k. WHAT? let me give you a little background on me, I created and admin the largest Hotshot Trucking social media and internet Network in the USA, over 600k members, 30 groups, 5 websites, blah, - and I own a Hotshot Trucking Carrier of a few trucks. Point is we do this much more than we would like to admit, deal with shops, mobile mechanics, repair shops and know when we are dealing with a good one. Now don't get me wrong, nice ppl but Monticello residents, your being robbed. So I had one of my other drivers come pick up the truck, bring it back to Texas, get a new motor, Install it, with better components and design than original for under 13k in 4 days. Oh Monticello told me the motor gaskets were on a 45 day back order. Here in Texas they are easily available. BTW they charge over $600 just to take the oil pan off and tell us it had metal shavings in it. WTH? less than an hour of work. This is really shameful. So lets get to the nail in the coffin. So I had to send my driver all the way back from Houston Texas in my spare Ford F350 Super Duty, my personal favorite. On the way he said that the ac was not working right, blowing hot and cold. So I call the previous owner, a mechanical genius and he tells me what to tell the shop, to just add the correct amount of Freon and check compressor, etc. (SEE TEXTS ATTACHED). They respond ok. Please understand my driver is a large man, and has diabetic health problems, Him and his brother suffered greatly coming there and I wanted to repair that ac at whatever it cost to get it right. So he took it to them and told them it is not blowing COLD air and check it out. He told them that I had sent instructions too. One of the MAIN REASONS we trusted them, LISTEN TO THEIR HOLD MUSIC ADVERTISEMENT- THEY SAY THEY RUN A FULL DIAGNOSTIC, ARE VERY EXPEIENCED AND WARRANTY THEIR WORK ANYWHERE, so we THOUGHT we were in good hands. So they hastily install a $40 blower, charge us $551, tell us it is repaired and blowing cold air, WRONG- My driver calls me an hour and a half down the road, Boss the AC is NOT working at all, the people say that it isn't their fault, should I go back? I am having health issues and my Doctors appt is Wednesday. I really need to get home but I don't know if I can stand the heat w/o air, We would have to get another day at hotel. I text, call and the head mechanic with all of these years experience tells me that he didn't check, diagnose, run gauges, check Freon , nor did anyone give him my instructions. He admits he should of and that he knew better. Oh boy, I am between a rock and a hard place, My driver needs to drive over 1000 miles still, the fuel, the hotel, the lost time. Yes in my business each day down is about $1200 revenue. I weigh the options, I have top level REAL mechanics in Texas that KNOW what they are doing, do not take advantage or overcharge us. We had just received a shocking high repair estimate at another facility and happened to see a news segment about Ask Patty Certified shops, and so we found Jim - along with a strong recommendation from a woman we know. Many years later, we are loyal customers. The fact is, we can all be taken by a mechanic. How do we really know? Ask Patty is another layer of consumer protection. I have never experienced any of the shenanigans I have endured at so many other car places. Sure, Jim will tell you he can repair all that minor stuff like bulbs and air filters that anyone can easily do themselves, but what I rely on him for are the major repairs, not just maintenance. If my wife happens to be the one taking the car in, she has Jim do that minor stuff. Jim founded his shop after many years in the business, thus establishing his credibility. He is a straight shooter and will tell you what needs to be done and not done. He is no pressure to do repairs. I have never had an issue with a repair that required me to come back, it failed early, or I had to make a warranty claim on his shop's work. He has a coupon sheet that we have always used to keep our three cars going. He referred us to an inexpensive auto body dude who does repairs from his garage. Jim also has the free loaner vehicles. For quick stuff I connect to his WiFi and work there, chatting with him about all sorts of stuff. He has good coffee. He has an annual car show thing.
