We wanted to visit a sunflower field and see what all the hype was about. The field is beautiful. The place was packed, which was to be expected. Unfortunately the management was not prepared for the volume of people. Parking was fine, but the facilities are lacking. They have porta-potties, but not nearly enough for the volume of people. I was in line for a good 20-25 mins, not at all how long you want to spend especially with a toddler. The porta-potties were not being serviced, they were disgusting. Nowhere to comfortably change a diaper. I'm happy they are doing so well, but hope they look into changes for next year.
I came here with a few folks to see the sunflowers, and didn't expect the sunflowers to be as voluminous as what I saw. The field of sunflowers is larger than it first seems. It's in the middle of a hill, so pictures allow a bit of a visual illusion of sunflowers for miles. There's a large field between the road and the sunflowers, which allows picnicking and picture taking. The flowers themselves are beautiful and exude a bright yellow hue. The farm stand itself is rather underwhelming but it looks small from the outside anyway. You can find some vegetables, meats, and some prepared items. Don't expect a Wilson Farm or anything. There is a small petting zoo with goats and ducks. If you need to use the facilities...don't. There are only two portable toilets there and they're often crowded. I've read reviews where the $5 parking fee is new and a bit of a shock to old timers. Since this was my first time, I wasn't as jolted but considering everything, I thought the admission fee was fair. Carpooling would make price even less of an impact. (thanks for the tip, Susan M.)
if you haven't been to a sunflower field, you should. it'll brighten your day like getting a boutique of flowers. except, well, you get to run in it, take pictures in it, and come out full of happiness pollen on you. so drive out, pack your car, it's $10 admission fee for the car. we bought some fresh corn from their tiny farm store, on the pricier side but it's good. there are other fields of red flowers and corn on the property. sunflower peaks late august to early september.
Colby Farm has a small farmstand selling fresh vegetables, ice cream, meats, and pies. But at some point in September, their sunflower field is in full bloom and worth a visit and the $5 cash parking charge per car. The path to the sunflowers from the parking field is well marked, and a little muddy by the wooden bridge. Check their Facebook page for up-to-date info on the flowers. I spied a No Picking sign out by the flowers, but there was also this note on their Facebook account: "Please remember no picking or walking through the flowers. Please stay on the outskirts of the flower field so everyone can enjoy them." Porta-potties are lined up not far from their penned goats and chickens.

Colbys Farm is located in the town of Newbury, MA. Not to be confused with the coastal town of Newburyport, Ma. The main attraction at the farm are the two sunflower fields in the back. The fields, and depending on the angle you take the photos, can give an illusion that the field stretch far into the horizon. There is no way to miss the farm when you visit during peek bloom. As you approach the farm there were signs and a separate lane just to turn into the farm. During our visit, there was also a police detail guiding us in. A sign that there are lots of people. We purposely went two hours prior to closing in hopes that it would be less crowded. We still found the farm crowded. The parking attendant informed us that it was even busier in the morning. I recommend doing research before visiting. Three things to look at, opening and closing hours, stages the flowers are in, and the cost for parking. This information is available on their website and Facebook page. You should check to see what stage the flowers are in depending on what your photography needs are. The farm does a great job posting whether the flowers are budding, in peak bloom, or in the seeding stage. Peak bloom usually happens around late August through early September. Another thing to keep in mind is the opening hours. Morning are busier than late afternoon. It is still busy but less busy. There are two parking lots, one in the front for the farm, and one in the back to see the sunflower fields. The price to park to see the flowers this year was $10 cash. There is also a no picking policy. Please adhere. That way everyone can enjoy the flowers. Also walk in the paths already created if you would like to take pictures in the flower fields. I haven't been to the farm, just the sunflower fields. Next time I go, I plan to make a picnic trip out of it also. You can stay as long as you like once you park. There is a huge grassy area in front of the flower fields where you can sit and picnic. There were families, people with their furry friends, dogs mostly, plenty of children and crying babies, expecting mothers, couples, instagrammers. There were many professional photo shoots happening. There were some bees, not too many. I believe the bees will leave you alone if you leave them alone so don't be afraid and come out and take pictures with the sunflowers or just admire their beauty from afar. I don't know about you but sunflowers always bring a smile to my face.
Fun family weekend trip during labor day weekend! $10 parking. Come early to beat the traffic and get a good parking spot. This is definitely a nice place for a picnic because you have the huge sunflower field and an empty grassy field right in front of it! A lot of people came for engagement photos, baby photos, etc. Families also brought their furry friends as well! The sunflowers aren't intimidatingly tall nor are the flowers oversized. Tons of bumblebees and honey bees abound. If you don't bother them they won't bother you.
Even though it a pain that parking is $5 compared to free last year, they were smart to charge it. At least it gave them side income. Honestly if this place didn't have the sunflowers, I doubt anyone would come out of their way. The farmstand is a bit smaller compared to others I've been to. I had high expectations for the farmstand which was a big mistake because when you go inside it is disappointing. They sell mostly fresh veggies. I was hoping for cinder doughnuts- my mistake. The sunflowers are beautiful! They are so big and bright. It's not the most stroller friendly. It was difficult to push it on the rock pathway but it's doable. It was fun to walk around the sunflowers and just view them. We went on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded but there was surprisingly a lot of people. I can see people picnicking here
Quite cute farm / bakery shop that sells homemade pies, local fruit and veggies and more. Bought a pie with some unique berry mix I forgot the name of and it was super yummy and cheap. Obviously also visited for the sunflower field craze - did come on a weekend but came early in the morning and there weren't too many people in the way. Love that it's free to do all of the above. Free parking , free to visit the fields and to roam the grounds. Great place and the people were pleasant as well!
I love coming to this adorable little farm, they have a small grocery store full of locally raised meats and produce. At the end of summer, in late August and early September, they open up their sunflower fields up to the public and it is so fun to come with friends and family. Great place to enjoy some beautiful flowers and get some unique photos! It does cost $10 to park, and worth it in my opinion.
Absolutely love coming here. I've been coming here before it was an internet sensation, circa 2005, and I was alone on the field. Now I enjoy bringing my daughter and taking pictures. The parking rate increased from $5 per car to $10 this year. But several noticeable changes made. To get to the field of flowers there was a mud patch last year just covered with cardboard. This year a bridge was built, more portable potty's, tractors on display to take pictures with and more staff. We purchased corn from the farm stand to bring to a dinner party that was delicious. I've loved Colby Farm for years and am very happy I can share the experience with my family now.
Amazing place! Each year they open up their beautiful sunflower field to the public to come take photos. A truly unbelievable sight! The sunflowers bloom around the first week of September -- you don't want to miss it! $5 to park and visit the field is extremely acceptable. Thank you to the kind folks at Colby Farm for allowing us New Englanders to experience such beauty!

Visited Colby farms on the last day of their sunflower filed season. It's $10 cash to park, then walking to the actual field is free after that. Considering that it was towards the end of the season, you could tell the flowers were on their way out. Some wilting and some had been cut down. It was still beautiful and once in a lifetime experience. The field is pretty much jam packed and there are a view paths you can walk down. I saw people walking under the flowers to go inside, however this looked a little too much for me, so we stuck to the pre-made paths and the perimeter. There were also numerous bees on and around the flowers but luckily we didn't get stung. We also visited the farm stand that had some nice baked goods and fresh produce. There were also two goats outside of this area that were so cute. Overall a fun experience but definitely go late august for the best experience. Beware too, not very accessible and lots of walking on grass. read more

They were out of sunflowers inthe field. When asked if there were others inthe area the Owner lied and said that the other sunflower fields no longer had flowers, were gone. 15 minutes from her, School Street Sunflowers had their fields open and in full bloom They have been "neighbors" for over 10 years so the e owner knew they existed. read more

Finally got up here this season! Worth the drive, don't wear heels. Parking is $10 cash only. Lot of people bring their kids. Even more people trying to get photos. There are a few farm animals near the market. Market has fresh desserts and produce. Mostly organic. read more

Kind of surprised that nobody has written a review lately :( makes me sad actually because Colby Farms is GREAT!! In addition to the super fresh assortment of fruits and veggies (as local as possible), there are lots of other great gourmet items you can pick up for dinner - like soup mix or pasta. They also carry locally made pies and breads - yum! After shopping be sure to say hi to the chickens - there's always a happy little bunch of them walking around the property... Or go visit the goats! Did i mention how incredibly nice the staff is as well? Anyway... I'm attaching a couple pics - I haven't seen strawberries like that since I was a little kid :) the strawberries at the grocery store are all misshapen and white at the top from being picked too early. The berries I got at Colby were amazing! I can't wait until local corn is in season! :) read more

It was my first time to visit a sunflower field. They do charge $5 for parking and you can only see the sign when you're already trapped inside their one lane line to get in. I'm okay with paying $5 but I think they should at least put it outside so people are aware before lining up. There were also no parking signs outside the field so in a way you really don't have a choice unless you walk really far. The field was big enough that even if there's a lot of people it doesn't get too crowded. It was soooooo pretty and I enjoyed taking lots of photos. Would definitely recommend visiting here. read more

Such a cool place to hang out. Only $5 to park and stay as long as you want! Try going in the middle of the week of possible and avoiding this place a couple hours before closing... while the sunset is amazing the wait to get in during that time anger especially on the weekend can be very long. read more

What a great farm stand - conveniently located on Scotland Road, right off of Route 95 North - this is the little farm can - I was surprised to see the wide variety of produce and local products in this little roadside farm stand. From fresh eggs to meats and cheeses - Colby Farm has it. The produce is picture perfect and the sunflowers will brighten your day! read more

The owner of Colby farms threatened to cause physical harm to me and my girlfriend because I parked in the wrong parking lot. We arrived around 2pm on my motorcycle and there was a long line of Cars on a gravel path leading to the back parking lot . Dirt was kicking up everywhere so I decided to pull off and park in front of the farm stand. A lot attendant came up to me and nicely said that if I'm here for sunflowers I need to park out back. I said no prob and as I was getting on my bike the supposed owner came charging towards me yelling that I can't park there , before I could even explain why I was there he was charging at me saying "watch what I do to you" swearing , and throwing his hands up as if he wanted to fight me all over me parking in the front lot. he didn't even know if I wanted to go to the farm stand or see sunflowers. He just assumed and went on his threatening rant towards me and my girlfriend. we gladly left, all the sunflowers are dead already anyways and it's $10 to park. Lots of people were not pleased and I over heard multiple people complaining how it was a waste of money. if you go there do not interact with the owner and do not park at their farm to avoid being physically attacked for parking in the wrong lot. First and last time I will ever go near the place. Pics are posted so you know to stay away from the man that threatened me and my girlfriend. read more
