I love the look and feel of an old school vegetable and fruit stand. I love supporting small businesses but this man is a real jerk. I won't go into his rudeness and everyone has their moments but this has been on more than one occasion also, cash only and I would not have issue with that but I am supporting a business where he is rude to select customers. I am always polite regardless. The young kids he employs are wonderful, can't imagine what they are being paid. You can get some good deals here but a lot of stuff will go bad quickly so buy with intent of using quickly. Other items you can buy for same price elsewhere and mostly not local. Which is fine. I do love his basil packets, those are nice and they are great for price. As a local myself, grew up in Allston Brighton, and love supporting small businesses giving my hard earned $ means nothing to this cash only establishment. So, out of principle I will no longer support this business NOR recommend. Cash only! That said, I bought a whole bookbag full of fruits and veggies for $14! It's my new go-to Saturday place. It's small and it ONLY has fruits and veggies, but you can stock up on your staples once a month at Costco. Love the vibe here. read more

I absolutely ADORE Johnny D's! Best (and only) place to get produce in Brighton Center! With only convenience stores and takeout restaurants around, this is the only place to get fresh food, particularly at an affordable price! We have a rabbit, so I always have to make sure there is fresh vegetables in my fridge. Johnny's always has the best and freshest lettuce and spinach which are my go-to's. They also have a $1 shelf with vegetables/fruit that's about to go bad if you're looking for something for dinner. All of the prices match nearby Stop & Shop or beat them! The other day I saw cherries for $1.99/lb while I know they're over $5/lb down the street. Seriously, you can't beat the convenience, price, and quality of supporting this local business. Besides rabbit food the apples have always been good, we get tons of pears, fresh mint, and the absolute best are the Israeli dates which just eating two is enough to satisfy any sweet cravings. Fair warning, it's cash only, but since it's Brighton you have about 17 bank options within a 5 foot radius. read more

Wow, just drove by this and noticed signs for raspberries $1 each pack. So of course I had to stop and check it out. There was easy parking for me about a block away. It's a small shop, so expect to get a bit cozy if there are other shoppers. They have just about all the regular produce you might need, and everything looked fresh. I even nabbed some bok choy for $1. The caveat is that they take cash only (probably how prices stay low) but totally worth it in my opinion! Bring ya dolla bills! read more

Incredible spot for fresh produce! The other day I walked out with two giant heads of broccoli and three nectarines for a total of $4. Truly can't beat the price. Everything is fresh and delicious! My favorite place in Brighton! The store always has in season produce for the lowest costs and by far the best quality in the area. They beat all the big name grocery stores on any day, and the employees are wonderful. Johnny D'à is the perfect neighborhood store. The quality of produce is excellent and Johnny is the nicest guy around. The place is pretty small inside, but it's stacked with a variety of fruits/veggies - whatever is in season. The cost is definitely comparable with chain grocery stores, but the real value comes from whatever is on sale for the week. There are usually 5-6 sale items each week that are a great deal (e.g. $1 eggplants). For good quality and great value, stop by Johnny's! read more

I finally decided to stroll into this shop, and was immediately greeted by a happy guy stocking fruit. Skinny guy with a mustache, total "dad" type. How are ya! He asked. How nice to hear someone genuinely asking. :) Anyhoo, they had a nice variety of your staple fruits and vegetables. The prices were pretty good and all the produce looked healthy. I was disappointed by the hot pepper selection, but the guy, let's call him Johnny, immediately told me that anything he didn't have he'd get for me with 24 hours notice. Habanero, chiles, anything. As I left, I asked about apple cider. He told me he has the ABSOLUTE BEST cider and he'll have some more this week for me. I can't wait! As I left, I said "Have a good one!", to which Johnny laughed again and said "Have TWO good ones!" I generally agree with reviewers in that the customer service here separates it from supermarkets. The location is also cute as well, as it's a very small store on a busy part of Brighton. The prices here are rather low and attractive. The produce I've purchased here are of reasonably good quality too. Positives: Excellent service and affable owner. Negatives: Fruits and Veggies are not exactly "fresh". The small shop has poor air circulation and an on-going problem with flies. Prices seem arbitrary. You can score a great deal on certain items like peaches and nectarines every now and then and be confronted with a huge price spike the next moment. It can't be blamed on the "season" since I often note the price disparities between Johnny's and Whole Foods. So this is a nice, convenient shop with tremendous heart, charm and appeal. I was next door at the Brighton Locksmith (who's also at the top of my list) and almost flew into the shop because they have boxes and boxes of fresh strawberries for $1.5! The inside of the shop is a little cozy but everything was fresh and beyond reasonably priced. The owners daughters were a great team in getting my products weighed and checked out. What bad thing can you really say about a super friendly family business that provides fresh fruit and veggies year round in a small quaint store? Nothing. And if you can, youre anal. I walked in and was surprised it was so small, however, I was also surprised at how much fresh stuff they had. What really impressed me was how well the owners knew the customers. An old guy apparently named Tony told a young lady named Angela to use the asparagus in a day, "Thanks Tony!" , Mustache man greeted EvErYoNe and tossed me a "Hows a going". I felt like I was in the south or something. They get new shipment everyday, I asked. They also have a shelf towards the front where everything is a dollar. You'd probably want to get there early to get anything off that rack. The entire store is soooo cheap. The only bad thing about Johnny D's is that the hours are not tailored to my schedule. Everything else about it is fantastic - great prices, fresh produce and incredibly friendly staff. This is the essence of a neighborhood shop. True story: I locked myself out of my apartment one winter weekday afternoon. I walked the two blocks to Johnny D's because he seemed to be the sort of guy who knows everyone in Brighton. He hooked me up with a locksmith, let me use his store phone to call, and let me hang out in the warm store until the guy arrived... and he'd never seen me a day in his life. My first year in Boston I was so poor I couldn't afford groceries and when Christmas rolled around, I spent my gift money on produce. I did not spend it at Johnny D's, which is a shame. I spent it on the crappy spray-ripened mush tomatoes and disgusting vegetables of the local Stop n Shop. And I still cried with joy upon eating them. If I had known about Johnny D's I might not have spent all of the first winter in a cold rage, huddled in my room next to the heater vent, slowly developing scurvy. Johnny D's is an amazing local find and even though I moved far away, I'm writing a review to make sure all you Brightonians spend your money here. If I come back and it's gone out of business because you thought you could find cheaper (you can't), better (HA!) produce somewhere else, I am going to be very upset. If it's slow the owner will recommend things to you. He also has a shelf for stuff on its last legs you can get for super, ridiculously cheap; even during my first year I could have afforded a bag of beans and a couple zucchini, which might have made things all seem just a little more bright, a little more beautiful. Patronize this business with all your dollars, and bring them in dollar form since it's cash only. How great is it to have an "indoor fruit and veggie stand" in the middle of the city? How about one with a super friendly owner who is not only very into produce (no really, it's awesome), but is always walking around, making suggestions (by way of letting you try/taste items), and often towards the end of the day significantly reducing already low prices? Oh, and it's open all year round. I don't know that I can say anything about it that others haven't. This place is great. Sorry Stop & Shop. My girlfriend grew up in Brighton and swears by this place for good reason. She also happens to have a beet fetish and loves cooking beets as much as possible. So one day we met up for lunch in Brighton and she dragged me into Johnny D's produce (I had to get back to work). While there, she spotted $1 beets on the $1 shelf. That night she made a humongous Beets-based meal and it's been all about beet leftovers for about a week now. But wait, about the store! This is by far the prettiest and cleanest produce store I have ever been in. The fruit and veggies are all in great shape. I don't even think they ever put anything mildly bruised on the shelves. This makes shopping easier since you don't really have to spend too much time picking the "prettiest" fruit or veggie. I swear they're all pretty! You can really tell that Johnny (the owner) takes pride in his store. My husband is a regular customer and always buys our veggies and fruits from here. I can't believe I just found this place! I walked in for the first time yesterday, and was instantly greeted by Johnny telling me I MUST smell the strawberries. Boy was their aroma sweet! He then invited me to taste one, and they certainly lived up to the expectations. The produce here is gorgeous, and you can tell that he personally checks each piece of fruit and every vegetable as it goes onto the shelves. I truly was a kid in a candy store, buying spaghetti squash, zucchini, cucumbers, sun-dried tomatoes, spring mix, scallions, and of course the strawberries - all for $14. This place is a must try. I love the idea of a local produce market, especially one that looks like Johnny D's: cute and quaint in an urban setting, green awning, and produce showcased on wooden boxes out front on the sidewalk. "Adorable" is an understatement! Although some of their produce is local, the vast, vast majority of it is not and a good amount of it is not even domestic. You will still get Chilean apples, Mexican spinach, etc. just like you would in a big-box supermarket. I would much rather buy from Johnny D's than Shaw's or Star Market, because you know you're still supporting some local farms and you're supporting the market itself. Plus, the owner is ridiculously friendly and knows the freshness of the produce he sells, even if it's not local or domestic. If you live in Brighton Center and want to go for a walk and support a small business, Johnny D's is the place to go. However, if you want to have a bigger impact on small farms that are local, I'd recommend joining a CSA instead. Tip: This place is cash only. read more

I love this place! Johnny is awesome- I hear from the locals that he used to be the produce manager at a high-end supermarket. He stocks some great produce, and it's so quaint! He's always willing to let you sample the produce if you're on the fence, or have never heard of it before (i.e. certain types of specialty pears, I don't quite remember what it was called, but it was delish!) My first experience with Johnny D's, I walked in and was greeted by Johnny himself with a grin and a cantaloupe. "Have a piece--the stock we have in today is delicious!" And it was the perfect piece of melon! The price is right, the business is local, the selection is good. It is cash only, but definitely worth it (and it's next to a plethora of ATMs). This place is a staple in Brighton Center! I've been going here for at least 10 years and I have never been disappointed. Fruits, vegetables and sometimes other things like salad dressing or tomato sauce, they are always beautifully displayed. The owner Johnny, is always engaging, informative about his stock and appreciative of his customers! They always ask if I found everything I needed. OK, here is the crowning jewel--the prices are soooo reasonable!! I stopped by this evening and bought a box of, "taste me do good" fairly traded blueberries for $2.99!! I just saw the exact same box of blueberries at Whole Foods for $5.99 a couple of days ago--wow! There is also a $1 rack of veggies and fruits he needs to move so there is always a great deal. Amidst all the bakeries and breakfast places on Washington St in Brighton Center is this gem. It's a tiny market where you can get fresh produce at slightly high, but not obnoxious prices. For all of the college kids in the area, this place would be perfect because it is in walking distance and it will have everything you need in terms of produce. All the produce comes from the same Chelsea market where all of the restaurants and major grocery stores get their produce, so you know it's high quality. Also it was pretty clear from looking at it that the quality was high. I just popped in to get a bag of mandarin oranges (a big bag) for $4. Not a bad price! My favorite part however was the fact that the shop owner was singing to the music playing in and outside he store while he was arranging the apples outside on the store front. It was very welcoming and I will make my way back there soon! read more
