Found this place by accident. The trail has some steep areas so wear the right shoes for walking. It's a nice view of nature just be aware that as soon as you get there, there is a sign about ticks in the area. So stay on the trail. read more

This is a nice trail with free parking and restrooms behind the library. The trail is busy with people and dogs, and there are quite a few stairs, so wear proper shoes and be ready for a bit of a challenge. You can enter the trail from different directions, which makes it convenient. The views are beautiful and serene. There are also eateries nearby, like Harbor Mist and others along the main street areas. Definitely recommend it for a quick nature outing. read more

I am very aware that I'm not in great shape but I think they downplay just how steep and how many steps are on this trail. I know it's very popular which is why I think people should know this is a serious hike which goes all up and down hills many which have steps, many steps up and many steps down and you will get to the end and do it all again. Even the teenagers with us were gassed by the end. The adults needed to ice our knees afterwards because it's brutal on them. Good news is as you're sweating your face off you'll be passed by tons of young fit people walking their dogs happily along the trail or in some cases running up or down the steps past you. Nice bathrooms at the start of the trail located in the back of the library which is a beautiful place to visit. read more

A very nice park to go hiking at, has wooden trails with scenic harbor views and definitely a great full-body workout. When we went in March, there were still remaining snow & ice, which made it more challenging but doable, lots of climbing like you're on a stairmaster with sections of inclines & declines and there's 2 main trails. We hiked the first 2.2-mile, Nassau Suffolk *out-and-back* Trail. Just keep walking until you see the road and from there, you can either turn back or cross the street to hike the second *loop* Trail. Highly recommend coming here to hike if you're in the area. read more

I enjoyed my experience here. Although this is a relatively short hike pick, 1.8 miles loop out and back, it was challenging and poses a great cardio work-out trail. I felt it on my legs and breath. I grabbed a walk stick on my way down for safety reason. Didn't realized that I'll be needing my trek pole here. Worth every steps. The view of the harbor from top is pretty . Across the street is a good view of the harbor . There are plenty of spots for public spot to sit on. Next to the state park is the towns library, not sure if allowed to get in being not a legit country resident. Definitely coming back during peak foliage. read more

Beautiful spot to walk around, hike and enjoy being outside with nature. Trails can be challenging as the hills are pretty steep.

Nice short yet challenging trail. Roundtrip is about 2 miles with sections of steep inclines and declines. At the end of the trail, you can continue the trail across the road or turn back. Highly recommend good footwear, lots of loose rocks and tree roots on the trail. Parking lot was pretty big, we didn't need to wait for a spot. After the hike, we went across the street by the water which was nice and relaxing. read more

Hiking in the woods is an excellent way to alleviate stress. Fortunately, Hurricane Ida did not cause any damage. Although this is a relatively short hike, it is quite challenging. Hiking shoes are recommended due to the steep and difficult terrain in some areas. We did not finish the entire trail. read more

Trail Series, Part 29 Recommended to us by @xjoey74 (Henry's Take Senior Field Correspondent), the "Cold Spring Harbor Trail" can be found on Long Island (about an hour outside of Manhattan). While that location may seem a little remote for some travelers, we found the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to be incredibly convenient out of Penn Station in Manhattan. This is an out and back trail covering approximately 2 1/4 miles and features a rolling terrain that earns its reputation as being moderate in difficulty. While accomplished mountain bikers might be able to navigate its challenges, this trail is best enjoyed by hikers and runners. We'd recommend that those with mobility issues set their sights on a different adventure. The thick canopy of trees provides outstanding shade throughout and a variety of birds provide a cacophony of sounds to serenade you during your journey. There is additional wildlife to enjoy in the form of (seemingly) floating worms descending upon their silk threads to hunt (uh, I mean greet) you. Also (and we couldn't be certain because the photo was a little blurry), but we may have just captured the most recent sighting of big foot! You should be sure to inspect yourself (and those in your group) for ticks at the conclusion of your adventure to ensure that you aren't packing them out with you as souvenirs (fact). BTW. OMG I fell in love with this place! so refreshing my dog Bambina doesn't know how to go down the steps but here she managed it herself down the steps now she is a pro at it! Little bit of up the hills down the hills steps up steps down. I have never seen a place like this, such a good workout as well, such an awesome feeling something you don't feel it after walking a regular park. I intend to walk here as long as the weather permits, not too cold or not too hot. All people are very friendly, couples, family w kids, with dogs. everybody's happy except sometimes kids maybe not so much. There is a parking lot also tons street parking. I believe this trail goes miles miles miles, possibly it's doable for first 1.5 miles which is end of the trail before crossing the street continuing the trail. read more

Love this park and the hiking trail. Located in a beautiful area not to far from Huntington. This park is great if you live hiking and looking for a nice hike to do. This park is also pet friendly so it's great to come with your pets and get that nice exercise in. This park is one way in and one way out. The park doesn't loop around like other parks. This is the only thing I l don't like about this park. How ever far you walk, if you decide to leave you have to turn around and come back the way you came in. This park is 6.2 miles of trails and it's not a easy walk and you can get lost easily. A lot of the trails are covered in leaves and they def could do a better job in making the trails more easily visible. They're signs up showing you which way to go but they're is also off trails you can walk on that can have you walking off the correct trail. It's important you pay attention to where you walk because they're a lot of roots sticking out where you can also trip and hurt yourself. Overall this park is for the big boys and girls looking for a long trail to walk. I did 2 miles and turned around with my girlfriend. As much as I like this park, I prefer walking on a pavement or more stable grounds. read more

The best most aggressive hike there is in Long Island. You feel like you are upstate NY, believe it or not. The only thing is, since COVID, many more found out about this place and it is jammed during the weekends in the summer and fall. Still come, but parking is a little hectic. Gorgeous views of Cold Spring Harbor on the North shore of LI. Connected to the great little quaint town with restaurants and shops. The Library next door is even awesome. Enjoy your hike and bring your furry friend, if well behaved. read more

Great hiking trail. Lots of steps... it's not the easiest but manageable. Have to wear good hiking shoes or sneakers at least.

I did not want to rate this so low because it is a very popular and beautiful park (For younger hikers). In the interests of the truth, I had to report on my experience as a 75 year old in less than perfect shape. You begin by finding, if you are lucky, a parking spot. Then there is, for me, a murderous uphill slog covering about a hundred foot gain. It is using steps made by hand, of varying heights. If there are benches anywhere on the trail, I failed to notice them. Your fellow hikers tend to be young and fit, and often accompanied by well socialized dogs. Otherwise, the only animal life I saw there was a squirrel, who was a bit camera shy, but no match for a high powered lens. Saw llittle or no flowering here, so the plant life is pretty much trees and a dense carpeting of leaves. Views the harbor are probably easier to come by in the winter. Coming down, the walk was scary, and this is why I did not give 4 stars. Several of the homemade steps are held in place by metal spikes. Sometimes, the spikes have ventured out from the wood a few inches, creating an opportunity for a spectacular plunge if someone is not paying attention. You can avoid some of the height problems by parking on Lawrence Hill Road and walking across the street to the park. This is what I will do on any return trip. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this park! My first time hiking here was nothing short of an adventure. I liked how this park had plenty of open space to navigate through, which allowed ample sunlight to enter. I underestimated the intensity of this trail. You have to be careful and ensure you are wearing the right sneakers to properly grip the rocks and climb steep steps. Once you reach the top, the scenery beyond the trees peeks through and you feel spiritually enlightened and accomplished. I'm excited to come back! :) read more

I loved this trail! It makes for a great little hike with family, friends, or even solo. It's quiet and very pretty, doesn't have dangerous animals, is dog-friendly, and is tough enough that you'll break a sweat, but not too advanced where you won't be able to hold a conversation. There are lots of steps so keep that in mind. The parking situation is tough. The lot is small and packed. I got lucky enough I got a spot on the street, but give yourself time for this part because it gets popular on the weekends. They have hand sanitizer at the entrance. Something else that is cute is that there's a place for people to leave lost keys that they find in the park. So sweet and smart! The only thing that was disappointing was that there is no lookout point. Would've been nice to see the water from up high. You can do the 1.25 trail there and back (totalling 2.5 miles), which took us about an hour, or you can continue and do the longer trail past the road. Either way, great trail that I recommend if you're on the island and looking for a light outdoorsy thing to do! read more

Awesome sights and a super clean and fun trail! This was one of my firsts and it was so much fun we did another one not too far off the same day. It's great for a day out with some exercise. The weather was perfect so that was a huge plus as well. There's a lot to see while you're here and it's so cool. You feel really accomplished once you finish. There's plenty of parking so that was perfect and it's not too buggy I'll def be on the look out for more! Def bring a lot of water to stay hydrated and use a walking stick they help! read more

This is my first time on this trail as I normally hike upstate. There is not much to see here. The trail itself is a little confusing. Some spots have arrows/dot of white paint on a tree trunk to guide people on the trail then nothing for awhile. I noticed quite a few items such as Baseball caps, bits of cloth etc left to help navigate the way. If you are looking for a workout this is the spot if you live in and around this area. However I wouldn't come back here there are much better trails. I will say looking out on the water and boating is spectacular on a good day. read more

Nice hike with a view of Cold Spring Harbor. If you don't like stairs, you may not love this hike. It's fairly steep at parts. And going downhill can be difficult for some. A little rocky and tough on the knees. If you have walking sticks, they would be helpful. Leashed dogs allowed. read more

I came here 8y ago for my pre-wedding photos on a magical, majestic day of superb scenery, precious memories, and momentous life moments. Our photographer, contracted via One Stop Wedding Studio in Brooklyn. My primary memory of this park is its mountainous nature (or what Western US people call, a small hill) which is surprising given the close waterfront visages from all the area's roadways. The hiking trails are moderate and just enough thrill while remaining super local. While most trails are unpaved, they're marked and not too long thus just the right amount of small adventure for an hour or two's enjoyment. Dogs, children, and elderly are all suitable here for the ground is safe and generally soft, especially in the autumn when leaves give it natural carpeting. Parking is in a small lot which can fill in the peak season but which generally, especially weekdays and outside tourist season, are spacious. Amenities are few but the local, friendly nature doesn't command significant such. The photography day's other stops were nearby Central Island Beach across Oyster Bay and Planting Fields Arboretum also in Oyster Bay. All are highly recommended for which I posted reviews. read more

ah..... late fall! Saturday, midday and so seriously needing some fresh air, headed to CSH State Park. Continues to be all at once challenging, serene and familiar. Love the heart pounding long climbs and the intense focus required for the downhills. How 2 hours passes by so physically quickly, yet lingers forever in the mind. Only one question????? Who the h**l put up the ugly scene spoiling imposing chain link fence in the rift from marker 108 to 109?? I wanted to sing out (Signs 1970) : "So I jumped on the fence and-a-yelled at the house, Hey, what gives you the right? To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in. If God were here he'd tell you to your face, man you're some kind of sinner" read more

I really enjoy this hike because it can be a little challenging at times. There are more up paths and stairs. It goes from 100 to 115. I have seen myself improving each time I go. Even in hot weathers it doesn't feel hot because there is a lot of shade from the trees. I still haven't reached 115 yet but I hopefully I will soon ! They have parking on site and across is view of water. read more

This unpaved trail is about 1.4 mile and it is NOT a loop. I personally consider this is a moderate difficulty trail as it is very sandy, rocky and lots of up-hills and down-hills. We went on a sunny day and the weather was in the 60s, very comfy as lots of shades along the trail. The trailhead was right next to the map and it was very easy to find. We got there at around 11:00 am and the parking lot was full already. There were plenty of street parking available though. The trail got crowded when we were about half way through, so I suggest to go early if possible. There is no bathroom around and on the trail, so it is important that you use the bathroom before you go on the trail. The view to the harbor was very nice, but I would not be able to see the harbor when I was on the trail. Most people wear masks on the trail. read more

Cold Spring Harbor State Park has some lovely views once you get to the top. The trails are moderate in distance but the steep slopes and hills weren't really ideal for me. There is a parking lot that is quickly filled and many people park on the street. The park has an impressive library right at the start of the trails. So simply put, steep hills, moderate-distance trails and a lovely harbor view. If that's your cup of tea, then check it out. read more

Challenging, beautiful, peaceful, uphill/downhill trail. Just a few flat parts, so wear your hiking shoes/sneakers and be prepared to get your hike on. From the trail head to the road crossing (Lawrence Hill Road) is about 1.5 miles/30 minutes at a moderate pace, so I leave myself about an hour for the 3 mile out and back. The trail keeps going once crossing Lawrence Hill Road and I'd love to check it out when time permits. Can get crowded on weekend mornings, but everyone plays nicely. Small parking lot at trail head and plenty of street parking on Harbor Road. read more

This is a really nice hiking trail - a bit challenging and definitely not leisurely. If you take the kids, they have to be the type of kids who enjoy doing the outdoorsy thing. There are a lot of steep hills, mostly going one way (from the parking lot entrance). It's about a mile and you walk to one end and then turn back to the other. I read it could get crowded on the weekends but I wasn't sure if that was true off-season (after Labor Day), but it seems to be. We stopped a couple of times to let people pass because I don't like having people right behind me. This park is only a trail. The woods are nice and you can walk off trail a bit, but that's about it. I was hoping there would be a better view of the harbor, but as a photographer, the light looks great and there are definitely photo opportunities. We definitely plan on going back, maybe when the leaves start changing. Huntington Village is also right up the road, so it's easy to make an afternoon out of it. Parking tip: Park on the side of the street by the main lot (small dirt lot) if it's full or on the side of the street at the other entrance (but then the trail will be more challenging heading back) read more

Great way to spend a morning and the fact that you can bring your dog is the best. The parking lot can get packed but there is ample room for the most part. The hike is a great workout, clean for the most part but keep your eye out for ticks and poison ivy. Apparently there is a bathroom right when you start the hike so that's a plus. Great view of the water at one point. The trails can become very narrow so when there's two way traffic you need to take turns walking through. I prefer trails that lead you to an end point instead of having to back track to the start point. You can break a sweat but the trails are not difficult so beginners would do well at this park, in my opinion. read more

We wanted to take a break from our usual hiking in Connecticut, so we decided to come down here to check this hike out. There are a lot of people here! It was a nice, sunny Sunday, and I think this is the most people I've encountered in a park since moving to the East Coast. As a result, the trails are *really* eroded, and since they're pretty steep, the footing can be tricky. It is a nice hike though, through a nice, hilly, forested landscape. There are lots (and lots) of dogs as well, so if your dog is on the timid side, they may not enjoy themselves. Our pup had a grand old time meeting other dogs. Parking can be a challenge on a day like this, the lot was full, but we managed to snag a street spot. There are bathrooms located nearish to the start of the trail. This park would be a good candidate for some trail work/maintenance to help with erosion control for sure! read more

One of my first hiking trip in Long Island. I was impressed with the elevation. The trail is long and challenging for a beginner. I would suggest anyone hiking at this trail to at least have proper hiking footwear at a minimum. The parking is kind of limited so you will have to snoop around for s space but the trail is amazing. The trail can get a little claustrophobic but only at the entrance. As you get deeper in the trail the crowd will dissipate so I do not recommend staying in a big group. You may get annoyed when the trail narrows but other than that you will have fun. read more

I came here for a hike and it was very pretty but the terrains are way to easy. This is a great place to come for a walk with kids, pets and people who are just starting to hike. I did come right after the fall foliage so there were beautiful colorful leaves all around the ground and a few still on the trees. They do have a bathroom by the library if needed. read more

If you don't want to travel hours for a good hiking trail, Cold Spring Harbor trail is perfect for a quick hike. I had a great workout on this trail. Not an insanely light terrain, will probably be a challenge if you are a beginner. You can bring your dog, we saw so many pups! read more

If you are looking for a challenging up hill / downhill trail, this is the one! If you are looking for a nice "walk in the park" trail (beginner), this is not it. If you have active children who like to climb and have tons of energy to burn, I am sure they will tire out after an hour of walking up and down the tough Long Island terrain! Went on a cool summer Saturday, it wasn't too busy and I have a feeling that its because it isnt a normal walk in the park :). We did the trail between 25A main and Lawrence Ave and back. What a hidden gem in Long Island! I found this place by googling "hiking in Long Island" and we went last week to try to catch the last remnants of fall leaves. We were stunned at what a great hiking experience this was. There are phenomenal views of the harbor and it is a hike that gets your heart pumping going up and down hills.
