This park--located on Montauk Hwy between Bay Shore and West Islip --is a wonderful place to go because of the diverse ecosystems you can observe. There is a big pond where we once spotted a Green heron for the first time. They have a butterfly garden and at the right time of year you can see them fluttering around. There is a sandy path for people who want to see the ocean across to Fire Island. Sometimes you can walk along the beach or other times it is flooded. Another option is just a walk around the woods (saw a big turtle once there). Dogs are supposed to be leashed (there is also a dog run/park fenced in for big and small dogs) but you get the occasional special snowflake who doesn't think "rules" apply to them. Generally most dog parents are very good about following procedures. I like dogs so it's always nice to go to what we call this park (The Dog Park). The only thing I would warn is mosquitoes and those little flies are very bad in the humid summer and when it's hot so avoid then or you will be bitten. Ticks also seem to be a problem but we have never had an issue. read more

We've been using this park for over 25 years now. When we moved to Long Island we were alerted to the fact that this is the closest park where one can walk their dog to a beach. From the parking lot (usually plenty of parking) to the beach it is about a mile, so the round trip makes for an easy way to get it a good stretch for those on 2 legs or 4. The main path is about 10 feet wide, so it is still adequate for social distancing. Along the way, there are well-spaced and well mounted benches - most with a memorial plaque for a late dog walker. Two thirds of the way to the beach, there is a swampy area that often intrudes on the trail, so you have to be creative about getting your feet and your dogs through without getting soaked. The beach is along the Great South Bay, so the surf is usually quite mild. Along the water, visitors are supposed to keep their dogs on a leash, but this is loosely enforced if the dogs are well behaved. Nice views to the Fire Island lighthouse and the bridges. Usually dogs and owners are well socialized. There are restrooms and picnic area near the parking lot. A wonderful resource for this island. read more

Gardiner Park is a smallish park located off Montauk Highway in West Bayshore on the South Shore of Long Island. I came upon it while I was having my car serviced nearby and used my AllTrails app to find hiking spots nearby. It piqued my interest not only because it was close, but it offered views of the beautiful Robert Moses Causeway. The park is moderately trafficked, with plenty of dog walkers and fellow nature enthusiasts. There's a beautiful pond near one of the main entrances to the trails and aside from the calming sounds of birds in the forest, I even got to see a couple of cute bunnies along my route. The bay front was also pretty spectacular, with splendid views of the bridge and a beautiful blue sky over the pristine waters of the Great South Bay. A word of warning here is that much of the pathways towards the southern end of the park are muddied and bugs are certainly a presence due to the proximity of the beach. read more

If you live in this area, you might just take this local gem for granted, but I was back home in NY, playing tourist, and wanted to try someplace new on a beautiful late summer day, and this place sounded perfect. Beautiful open green field, plenty of easy, scenic, trails, including a fitness trail and dog walk, playground and picnic facilities, and more!! My 93 y.o. mom (!!!) and I arrived late Friday morning and just about had the place to ourselves. We decided to walk the Beach Road trail and were rewarded with an easy, scenic walk (about 3/4 mile each way?) to a beautiful view of the Great South Bay and the bridge to Robert Moses State Park. There's a swampy little beach, no swimming, and we came across a crowd of high school marine biology students wrapping up their studies out there. Great resource!! We had a nice, leisurely hike back, coming across plenty of benches to rest along the way. We just did that one hike that morning (mom's a TROOPER!!!) but hope to return again to check out the other trails. ENJOY!!! read more

Great park to take your dogs & kids! I take my dog here all the time. There's a dog playpen for small (less than 25 pounds) and large (25 and over) dogs, as well as an agility course for both, and a playground for kids. The main trail takes you all the way down to the bay, and plenty of paths all around the park for a good long walk. You can easily take your bike here! It's especially nice in the summer when it's warm, but it's also open in the winter as well which is nice (albeit restrooms are closed during the winter season). read more

We're taking a nice Saturday drive out to Long Island, the sun is out, the pups are content and excited, gotta pocket heavy with jingle -- what could possibly go wrong? Into the parking lot we turn, its 10:00am and -- we're the only vehicle there, (red flag #1) so I circled a bit, as if corraling livestock and summoning nature and the spirits for an answer to the lack of humans, canines or miscellaneous. I read the map, thinking the dog loop is a nice start being a nice little quarter of a mile, we ventured off whilst ignoring the buzzing occurring around my shoulders and ankles. (red flag #2). Now I'm catching on and as much as the canine loop was well kept with bags and water, we went south, towards the water. This was not a decision based on ignorance nor bravado, I'm still a bit southern and the South Carolina State bird is the mosquito. "How bad could they possibly be"? Well, just a few paces in and we got bum-rushed, big-time! They were flocking like the Salmon of Capistrano and the high level of alcohol streaming still through my veins from the night before held no line of defence. Fortunately Rhodesian Ridgebacks are immune to bug bites and the skeeters only took a little taste of my A+ with CMV negative blood before departing for other pond pastures to ready their next ambush. read more

She stated we needed a pass and we were being very calm with this women and she continued to be aggressive.Unless you want to be harassed don't come. read more

Excellent dog-friendly park on Long Island! I do have to say, that if you don't really care for/are afraid of dogs you might want to avoid this place as you will see just about everyone who comes here has Fido in tow. We've come here several times with our pup, who is 4 months old. If you need to socialize your best friend, this is a great place to do it. We have met countless friendly people and their animals. You get a great sense of community here as everyone just wants to say hi, or greet your pup if you have one. There are lots of open fields to run and jump and play, as well as a "fitness trail" if you feel like doing some push-ups along the way. There are also paths that lead to the water, with a small sandy beach that my dog absolutely LOVES though she will by no means go into the water. It's a great little spot, in view of the bridge to R.M. and the lighthouse. Be forewarned, if you take the paths wear bug spray! The mosquitoes are quite feisty around here. Also, watch for poison ivy along the paths as well. If you want to chow down, there is a covered picnic area (no dogs allowed) and a playground area as well for the little ones. They have bathrooms, but I haven't been inside to inspect the cleanliness. FYI, the lot is free parking! Can't go wrong, people. Although this free parking won't make you entitled to a pile of Monopoly money. :) read more

Gardiner Park was once the right-of-way to the bay for the wealthy Gardiner family. Their home, Sagtikos Manor, is across the street and preserved as a museum. It is a truly beautiful spot, the end of the mile long path ends at the bay, with beautiful views of the Fire Island lighthouse. I highly suggest a trip here. read more

First, the parking was free and there is no permit required which is great. However, I would suggest going with bug spray. I never usually need it when I go on hikes but for some reason it was extremely buggy and I ended up with many MANY bug bites. Just a word of advice! This is a perfect spot for a run, a walk with your pup, or just to relax. One of the few spots on the south shore that allows dogs at the beach so you are likely to be accompanied by multiple furry friends. No parking permit or fee required which is nice, but the parking lot is pretty small and gets full quick on the weekends. Be careful if it has rained as the trails get very muddy and sometimes impassable the closer you get to the water. read more

Came here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and there were lots of people but I found it difficult I'll to make it further than 10 feet down the trails before literally being eaten alive my giant mosquitos. They were intense! And they followed me as I ran back swatting myself. They have a nice public water spout for dogs to drink from or for you to rise yourself off with which is super convenient. I definitely loved the walk to the water and my pup got to meet lots of four legged friends. When we got Down to the water it wasn't much of anything but some grungy seaweed and stinky low tide the view was awesome of the Robert Moses bridge and I bet sunset is spectacular there. Great easy trail for walking, running or taking your dog. Only downside with dogs is that I have seen many people have their dog off the leash. This is a problem as not every dog gets along with each other. The signs clearly say dogs must be on a leash but obviously not everyone follows that rule. I just love it here..period...suitable for a walk or a run... Straight to the water or take one of the many paths ... They do have a few work out stations embedded in some of the trails which is cool..I really just come here when I want to be by the water.. It's convenient and close by me and it makes me feel like I'm somewhere else just for a second until reality sets in hahah but other than that it really is pleasant .. A lot of people walking their dogs also.. Beware of the careless A holes that leave the dog poop on the floor like you should just stay home people.. Be courteous this is a state park! Be number 1 at picking up number 2 and don't F it up for everyone .. Nice to come here all year round and especially love it in the fall with the change in foliage ..it really is great and beautiful and will put you and your mind in a nice calm place... Great park for dogs and humans!! Dogs must be leashed at all times, although some people let their dog take a swim when they got to the beach. My dog loved the beach area! The water didn't get too deep and the waves were very small. When you first get here, there is plenty of free parking, two clean bathrooms (that seemed to close at 4pm), a picnic area, water fountains, and a playground. Then there are trails! One straight trail leads you directly to the beach. It's about three quarters of a mile walk. Along the way, you will find other trails and some benches. It's greatly kept and not much bugs when I went. I saw cute bunnies on the trails too. About an hour away from the city without traffic. read more

Drive south on Manor Lane to where it hits Montauk Highway and you find the parking lot for Gardiner CP. Max (my Jack Russell terrier) and I first walked our way through the health fitness trail which was lovely. Then we found dirt trails with names like Puma and Gull. These trails were beautiful and incredibly clean. There were garbage cans and poop bag dispensers all over and people seemingly use them. (Max had already gone this day.) There was no fee to park AFAIK. Max and I will visit this park many more times before we leave the area. UPDATE: Went back on a Saturday and, despite a crowded parking lot, felt like a Monday it was so empty! As good as it gets is right, Yelp! read more

Parking/entrance is free and you don't even need any kind of sticker or permit to park- anyone is welcome! It's super hard to find dog-friendly parks on Long Island that aren't just small fenced dirt fields without much stimulation aside from interactions between dogs. At Gardiner County Park, dogs are allowed everywhere except one small area where dogs aren't allowed which is a park for kids. At the beginning of the park there is also a water pump where you can hydrate your dog or wash off any sand from the beach. Gardiner County Park has tons of trails and even a fitness one. There is a map on a bulletin board near the entrance of the park. Beach Road will lead you right to the bay where your dog can splash around. This is definitely a busy park but never crowded and it is always clean of trash, but sometimes you see some poop on the sides of the trail as a result of people not cleaning up after their dog... so please do so. The beach has a great view of the bridges as well as the Fire Island Light House. Across from the beach is a marsh so definitely bring bug spray! read more

A beautiful park with a short walk to the water. Me and my dog loved this park. It was the first time there back in June. By the time you get to the water you can see the Robert Moses State Park bridge. The beach was nice, a little murky, but great for my dog to play in the water and cool off a bit. The trails through the woods were lovely and well maintained. I'll definitely be back! It's a beautiful park. I love finding these so called "hidden" gems of Long Island. read more

Nice park to come visit in West Bay Shore is best enjoyed spring and fall. Summer time when it's humid can be off putting because of the stench coming from the Great South Bay. It's mostly visited by dog owners though I wouldn't technically call it a "dog park". It's a nice hike from the parking lot to the bay. On the way back there are other trails to take as well. There's even a play ground for the kids and a large lawn for the dogs to run around. Recommended to bring your dog or just go for a hike. read more

This is a wonderful, underutilized park, especially for those with dogs. This might be the most dog friendly park with beach access in NY State. The trails and beach are are exceptionally well maintained. The park is a wonderful place to walk, even without a dog. In the summer, the trails are perfumed with honeysuckle. I imagine spring and fall are equally beautiful. There's a nice kids playground, a picnic area, and a puppy friendly water fountain. This is not a place to go if you want to lay on the beach and oogle over beautiful people. But if you are an adult and want a great new park to explore, give it a try. read more

The best park to walk in with your dog in winding trails. Not too big to get lost and there is a great path to the bay with an outstanding view of the first Robert Moses bridge to fire island. Poop bags provided and it's strict about keeping leashes on which is good. read more
