At the beginning of the year I could not sleep on either side without experiencing pain, I couldn't throw an overhand ball, I couldn't reach for things over my head, my shoulder joint would catch and grind whenever I moved it around. Dr. Eakin did a total replacement of my right shoulder in March. Now, six months later, it is vastly better than it was before surgery, and is about 90 percent of being a full recovery in terms of strength and range of motion. I am confident I will be at or close to 100 percent at one year. I have no pain, sleep easily, can throw a ball overhand, take things off high shelves, and my shoulder moves smoothly with no pain in all directions. Dr. Eakin performed shoulder surgery on me for a loose shoulder in 2008. It is now 2025 and I'm able to do all of the sports that I want to including swimming, volleyball, and cycling. This past February I saw him for a collar bone break and he gave so much confidence that we were going in the right direction without surgery. He is very methodical in all of his assessments as I could tell by the battery of tests he performed. My collar bone is healed up well and again and I'm able to do all of the sports that I want to. Dr. Colvin has poor table side manners does not listen to the request of his patients and because so he hurt my knee and overrate rotated my hip despite me telling him no no no use the activator he insisted on doing it his way by pulling my knee and using his whole body force on my hip His actions he over rotated my hip, causing more pain than I'm experiencing the past nine months of going to a different joint chiropractor doctor I am now required to go to different chiropractors several times a week to try to correct the damage that he did then he falsified the documentation to state he only used activator when in fact another doctor the office iced my back and then use the activator to correct the over rotation that he made by putting his whole weight on my hip and using the drop table when I told him no and to not do it he did it any way because he has a God complex. He should pay for every visit that I need to correct what he did to me. Instead he chose to cover it up. If you are a person of color I would not recommend you going there because he doesn't listen to our concerns which further broadens the healthcare disparities that we experience when doctors don't listen to what we say we need they hurt us. I had a rotator cuff and bicep repair in August 2019. All three anchor bolts dislodged at different times and had to be surgically removed. I was never told they could dislodge and when I asked Dr Eakin he said he had never seen this happen before. Really? All I had to do was do a Google search to see this happens and cause damage to wherever they land. In my case it was in my shoulder joint and bicep. My shoulder was destroyed and needed a Shoulder replacement. After the shoulder replacement I still had horrible pain and my current doctor took the time to review everything and suggested a scan of my humerus bone. There had been a fracture in the bone that was most likely there when I was seeing Dr. Eakin. My three year pain odyssey is finally coming to an end. Do I recommend this doc? Never. I have ankle issue with pain and swelling. I got appointment with Dr. Eakin after two weeks. Dr. Eakin does not spend time and not ordered any X-ray. He said this will recover in 1-2 months. Even though I was having pain and swelling. He did not give any braces , nothing. After month I visited another Dr, PAMF sports medicine. He ordered X-ray and said that there are minor fracture. He did not give anything brace or Shoes for walking to heal the pain. After month again I got appointment with Dr. Eakin and he ordered MRI and found that there is obvious tear. He is not sure what to do and asked expert to look. I believe that Dr. is not even bothered to take seriously. He spoiled my ankle recovery. I am still going through pain and swelling. I had a knee arthroscopy surgery with him earlier this year. The way he discussed about my situation prior to surgery as if he knew what he could be done with my knee. After the surgery, he told me that he could not do anything with my knee. But, then, I was charged with thousands and thousands of dollars for what he could not do. I felt it is really a ripped off. Plus, he had made the stitches that is over my nerve and now I am still having pains and feeling numb on the skin surface when I bend my knee. I wish I did not listen to him about what he said he could do. During the pandemic, he probably had not enough patients for the experiments or to pay him. I am at week 8 of my reverse shoulder surgery and physical therapy. I now have more range of motion than pre surgery and it is getting better by the day. Why did I wait to get this surgery? I was referred to PAMP Sports Medicine for issues with my knee. After a 45 minute wait, I saw Dr. Eakin for less than 5 minutes. He pulled up my x-rays and commented on the fact that my Q-angle (the angle between your quadriceps muscle and the patellar tendon that helps the knee track properly) was a whopping 16 degrees, and he noted that 5-9 degrees is average, so this was likely contributing to my knee issues. What he failed to mention is that the average Q-angle for men is 11.2 degrees for men and 15.8 degrees for women (Sims, S. PhD, 2016)! In his extremely short evaluation, he was quick to say that I need surgery and ordered an MRI. I felt that the information Dr. Eakin provided was misleading and strongly biased towards convincing me that surgery is the answer. This was a $330 visit, which my insurance did not cover. It's been 3 months and I'm making a strong recovery through PT and stretching. If he's not aware of a woman's average Q-angle, he should not be treating women. read more

I was referred to Dr. Eakin by an orthopedic specialist in 2008 who told me in his thirty years he had never seen anything like the symptoms I was experiencing. He told me he has a good relationship with Eakin and had sent other clients to him. He said I had at least 2 things going on, including the torn shoulder labrum. Right away I will say that I have been traumatized by the surgery and lack of recovery ever since. I have severe issues that I did not go into surgery with and are entirely unrelated to the type of surgery. I never regained full use of my arm and using it just a bit is cause for deep back and shoulder pain. It has alienated all my friends and family. I try to say 'at least it does not hurt so much when I do not move it', but it has become old. Here are just a few symptoms I live with daily as a direct result of the botched surgery shoulder labrum surgery that Mr. Eakin insisted I need, when my orthopedic specialist said there at least 2 things going on and this was conveyed to Mr. Eakin multiple times with great urgency: All my joints, nerves and muscles, soft tissue, tendons, anything on my right side from my hip to the top of my head (including my face) remain weak and some severely damaged to the point that entire muscle groups do not move at or do so incorrectly. I have bumps, adhesions and distortions on my biceps brachii, pectoralis major, latissismus dorsi, brachioradialis and deltoid leading up to the still unhealed site of surgery. I have weird bumps on the pinky side of my hand that are painful and radiate to my arm, shoulder and neck acutely. All my joints on my hand and my wrist and elbow are affected by damage to the nerves and muscles and are painful to move. The ulnar bone is dislocated and juts out with major pain to the touch. All affected areas are very sore to the touch and most radiate nerve pain to my chest and elsewhere. Indeed, I cannot even swallow correctly because the throat muscles are damaged and weak. I choke if I lay down after a drink. Trying to stretch it out is crazy painful especially when much of it comes to bear on me all at once. But I have to because to not do anything makes it hurt worse, so a catch-22. But for the past 7 years I have seen very slow progress, just not the kind that relieves pain but helps mobility. Getting in there deeply is difficult and very painful, but the only hope I have. I do not take huge sums of pain medication , enough to take the rawness away. I cannot even take that much I have so much nerve damage from the surgery, it makes me sick with more pain and I would die. From 2016 - mid 2018 I would go on to suffer from stroke like headaches which would strike out of the blue and were life threatening. That aspect remains today to a lesser degree. An ultrasound in 2018 revealed my subclavian nerve is pinched and the brachial plexus damaged. Now I am sill stuck doing non-conventional release exercises everyday which are painful and the pain does not subside after one until the next day. I have held back on saying any of this for so long because I have been traumatized about what it has meant to me career and life. I had a great business going on, but lost all of that due to medical bills in 2010. And ever since then I have held some jobs but have been unable to hold them because of the unhealed pain from the injury. I do some part time work from home on the computer, which is all I can really manage. The botched surgery has destroyed my life. I called them up a few years back and they said in a letter that "we found the clinical care provided was appropriate'. They said this without even giving me the interview that 'Mary, R.N. , BSN' promised she would give me on the phone when she called me one day. In the end, the verbal care given was substandard and dismissive of my concerns. The surgery was botched and hidden from me. I realize now this will likely be a factor in my premature death. If I were to get Covid, this underlying serious condition would kill me if it went full blown. I did not realize the seriousness until after the time for suing this doctor was possible or I would have. Everyday I have to think about it. I cannot throw a baseball, play golf, go bowling or do any of things on the level I once enjoyed. I am sure Mr. Eakin has some success stories out there it appears, but for me, he was rude, did not listen to me or the specialists concerns and by believing there was only one problem, he botched the surgery badly by rotating my arm when it likely TOS existed. Try to imagine how going in for surgery for one thing and coming out realizing there were more problems feels, especially when I knew better and told them as much. I do not recommend anyone get surgery from Mr. Eakin, or risk losing their happiness. He does not exude the religious principles he abides by. Or he would have tried to make this right by me. He dismissed my concerns without listening. He is rude and not a good person. read more

Dr. Eakin saved my life...at least my active life. Decades of sports activities had produced a few injuries along the way. I had consulted with Dr. Eakin on all of those and he always advised against surgery. Surprising for a surgeon but I appreciated his philosophy of "trying nature first, surgery second". However last year I had a completely torn rotator cuff injury and surgery was unavoidable. Just to be sure I consulted with the head of a nearby medical school who confirmed the diagnosis, and then added that if he needed surgery Dr. Eakin would be his own personal choice. His reason? "Colin is a perfectionist". Sure enough my surgery was perfect and today I can do 100% of what I used to do at 100% strength. Regarding some Yelp reviews below 5 Star, I believe they are related to the extreme pain of shoulder surgery and length of recovery. Everyone knows that has been through shoulder surgery...it's very painful. It takes time. Bedside manner? I found Dr. Eakin to be detailed, professional, and succinct. I had my shoulder surgery on Wednesday 31st March. It is now 11:30pm on Sunday April 5th and I have not received any call from Dr Eakin or his staff to check in on me. I had to call Dr Eakin the other night because my fingers were numb and he gave me an exercise to do but it is so painful that it is impossible. None of my discharge notes had any suggestions of exercises I ought to be doing. The Percocet has made me incredibly nauseated and headachy. I have written to the office several times requesting advice for numbness, as well as a possible change of meds but, have heard nothing. My first pre-op is on Tuesday which seems like a long time. I am in such pain that I called PAMF to speak to anyone in sports medicine or orthopaedics for help tonight, but Dr Eakin insists that his patients only speak to him. He has not picked up his page after 15 minutes. The PAMF operator told me to call back if he didn't respond which I am about to do. I have had many surgeries in my life and have always received excellent care and follow up and that I have heard nothing is, to me, appalling. I guess he's a good surgeon, although how would I know as I haven't spoken to a soul, but the protocol in his office for post-op care is barbaric. Monday April 5th 1.20pm. Got a very nice call from Dr Eakin. Of course I had to go through Patient Services which I shouldn't have, but he was very reassuring. I think the main thing is to ask all the questions one can at one's office visit and make sure you have a direct number to your doctor for questions so that you don't have to get into a state. Looking back, I had a really good experience with Dr Eakin and his team. I had ongoing shoulder pain beginning in Feb and saw Dr Eakin starting in May. My first couple visits with him were fairly quick and my first impression was that he didn't remember me and that he was rushing through. That said, I really liked his assistant Carmen who's bedside manner more than made up for Dr Eakin. Looking back, I think my issue was just an easy one to diagnose and having not had a situation like this before I just didn't know what to expect. Dr Eakin did thoroughly explain my issue and that he could fix it with a relatively minor minimally invasive shoulder surgery with short recovery time. To me it seemed too "easy" and I was skeptical at first. I got a second opinion who suggested a more major surgery that included cutting tendons and a significantly longer recovery time. After trying extensive physical therapy and considering both doctors carefully, I decided to go with Dr Eakin with my rationale being that non-invasive is a better path when available and I'm so glad I did. It turns out he just knew more modern techniques for this particular issue than the other doctor. The surgery process was simple, Dr Eakin did a GREAT job and his surgical assistant who performed my post surgical followup was also awesome and had an amazing bedside manner. My surgery was back in early November and I healed up quickly just as they suggested I would. So my overall feeling is that Dr Eakin knew what he was doing and did a great job on the surgery and any small shortcoming in his bedside manner for me was more than made up for by his supporting staff. Soon after my surgery, while I was in the recovery room, the nurse asked Dr. Eakin if I should get more pain medications as I was still in excruciating pain. I feel a bit odd writing a review for a surgeon on Yelp but when researching surgeons this was the place I found the most information on Dr. Eakin. I can't recommend Dr. Eakin more highly. I saw him for a ligament reconstructive surgery on my shoulder after I suffered a severe shoulder separation and the results far exceeded my expectations. Given I lead an active lifestyle, I was very concerned about having long term physical limitations but Dr. Eakin assured me that I would make a full recovery. While there is no standard treatment for shoulder separations, he used an anatomic reconstruction technique that has excellent long term outcomes and the added benefit of being hardware free. I am four months out from surgery and have full shoulder function, range of motion, and the profile of the operated shoulder is virtually indistinguishable from the other. His surgical assistant, Dr. Cutright, also did an incredible job with closing up the incision. I was concerned about having an unsightly scar since it was an open shoulder surgery but the incision healed in a very faint thin line. Dr. Eakin is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and highly skilled. He can come off as a bit brusque initially, but he was very thorough in answering all of my questions and did a great job of putting me at ease. I had a slight moment of panic the evening before the surgery and he got on the phone to walk me through the entire procedure and respond to all of my "What-ifs". I had my surgery at Menlo Park Surgical Center which felt more like a hotel than a hospital, and the entire process was, if not pleasant, far better than I could have expected for a major medical procedure. I was in little to no pain and my recovery was smooth and complication free thanks to the skill and care of Dr. Eakin, Dr. Cutright, and the rest of the staff. In 2016 my husband was diagnosed with tendinitis, then gout, then a pinched nerve and eventually lung cancer. It all started with shoulder pain and fever in Tahoe. My husband reached a point he was barely sleeping, only able to sit and on a precise schedule of hydrocodone and steroids. 4 months and dozens of doctors later we saw Dr Eakin and he was like the ultimate medical detective. He listened carefully to the progress of the issue and examined my husband's shoulder and I think his glands. He quickly rejected cancer! Not even his specialty and suggested an infection! Again not even his specialty, but that finally led to the first right test and diagnosis. Turned out my husband had a staff infection in his collar bone and required a bone resection, 3weeks IV antibiotics and 3weeks with an open wound that had a 24hr vacuum attached to helped draw the antibiotics to over his bone and 3 months of oral antibiotics. Ended up going with arthroscopic surgery, Dr. Eakin was very professional throughout and ~6mo after the surgery the shoulder is doing well (much stronger, recovered most range of motion, and continuing to get better). If I had the option to choose zero stars, this would be the occasion. I went to Dr Eakin for pain in the my inner knee from cycling. I was having trouble riding more than 15 miles and had to recover for several days from the pain afterwards. He spent all of 15 minutes with me: inspected my knee, ordered NO xray, and diagnosed the problem as overuse. His recommendation: cutting my riding down to 2-3 times a week (that made NO sense whatsoever since I was barely riding once a week without pain). A month later I went to a different doctor, who spent 45 minutes listening to my history, checking my posture, feet, and joints, ordered an Xray and MRI, and spent another 45 minutes afterwards analyzing each MRI image to make the diagnosis. I am now going for knee surgery to correct the serious skewed knee cap problem. Thankfully I did not listen to Eakin's diagnosis and rode through the pain. He is the typical modern doctor - takes no time to get to the bottom of things, does not believe in the whole body philosophy (that maybe the knee problem might be related to bad posture and flat feet), and won't take anyone seriously unless they are a big-surgery client. read more

I have now had two ACL reconstruction surgeries both performed by Dr. Eakin. He is an amazing surgeon and has a very easy going personality. Prior to my first ACL recon in April 2005 I interviewed 5 orthopedists before finally selecting Dr. Eakin. As I write this review (3.21.11) I am at home recovering from my second ACL recon (to the same knee) so I can definitely speak from experience in his abilities and overall positive experience of working with him, his staff, and those at the very nice surgical center where he does his surgeries (Menlo Park Surgical Center). I am an avid skier and non-professional athlete. He understands and respects his patients athletic goals. You have 5 post surgery progress meetings, the first of which is handled by his Physicians Assistant, to make sure that you are meeting your rehabilitation goals and to deal with any questions or issues. Absolute nasty and useless woman answers the phone, hears that I have a broken collarbone, asks me name, age, address, then says "his next appointment is the following Tuesday". I ask if she can tell the doctor that I have a break now, and can he see if he can at least see me? She says no. I again ask if I can at least have the doctor call me back. She says not until he sees me. She then says my only option is to call them every day to see if there is a cancellation on his schedule. So far, so good. I got cartilage regeneration surgery in my knee three weeks ago. Dr Eakin spotted an error that another surgeon made in his prognosis and helped me choose the right surgery for me. I am a professional athlete and he had a huge amount of respect and concern for the gravity of this decision for me. Dr. Eakin just completed my ACL reconstruction 4 weeks ago. I am very pleased with the progress and results at this stage in my recovery. I was up the first day. On a stationary bike in 10 days. The progression of the recovery has been tremendous every day. If you follow what Dr. Eakin, Sean his P.A. and his nurse Linda instruct, prior and after surgery you will do great. The injury occurred 7 years ago when I was 53, however the knee was not buckling. My previous orthopedic surgeon recommend I not have the surgery due to several factors including my age. He said it was along a difficult recovery. Fast forward to today. The leg started to buckle on a regular basis and I was never sure it was going to hold me during activities. I saw Dr. Eakin on a consultation. He recommend after reviewing my MRI findings with me, the possibility for a less invasive repair. However, he would not know the extent of the damage until surgery to visualize inside the knee. If the ACL was not a candidate for the minimal repair, then he would perform a total ACL repair using a hamstring autograft. I really was impressed with his approach for the less invasive surgery if possible. Age was not a factor. He said "the leg was functionally unstable, and would not repair itself, causing more damage to the knee." A true professional...I have not met a doctor or surgeon with better bedside manner. He has treated me with respect, compassion and grace. After 2 surgeries and 6 months of pain and frustration with my former OS, Dr. Eakin completed an LOA on my knee in late Nov 2009 that has my ROM almost back to normal and my pain from the arthrofibrosis is gone. I meet with him in a couple of months to discuss next steps; unlike my former OS, Dr. Eakin wants to be proactive in delaying osteoarthritis in my knee. My other surgeon didn't propose any solutions for the medial meniscus that he removed from my knee. Dr. Eakin will fully explain the procedures/options and I trust his guidance and expertise. Dr. Eakin is the best! I was referred to him from my orthopedic surgeon in Monterey County. After 5 knee surgeries I am hoping that this will be my last. The Menlo Park Surgical hospital was amazing. I've been through two successful shoulder surgeries with Dr. Eakin and am perplexed by the negative reviews. He's a very skilled surgeon, and is professional, efficient, confident & caring. He explains things clearly and patiently, I have never felt rushed during appointments and moreover, have never waited more than a week to get an appointment. He has been on-time for all appointments and his entire team is professional & kind: nurse Anne, PA Sean, front-desk crew... I wouldn't consider seeing any other orthopedic surgeon in the Bay! read more

I suggest you do go to Dr. Colin L. Eakin for a shoulder surgery/ In May of 2010 I had a shoulder sugery on my left shoulder to repair 6mm tear on my superspenados. After surger he caused two more tears in two other places that I did not have before, I feel worst than before the surgery. Dr. Eakin was in a hurry to finish with my surgery and start with the next one, has no time for the patient once he had done the surgery. read more

The nicest guy. Really listens and doesnt rush you. He had to fix my knee after Dr King screwed it up. Not a complicated surgery! When i woke up I finally felt relief! He and his staff are always great, helpful, friendly, professional. After such a bad experience he was very calming and put me at ease and AFTER the surgery...and even years later, he is there for me when I need him. Heard from many others how they are fans as well! We need more dr's like him! read more
