He does not push patients to aggressive/surgery path, but directs people to take more conservative treatment like PT or exercise first before going the aggressive therapy route. Andrew Haskell operated on my ankle twice. The first time he put in pins. The second time, two years later, he removed them. He promised me it was a simple operation and I would be back to normal within two weeks. He damaged a nerve when he removed the pins. He acknowledged that, but said I knew the risks and it was too bad. That was 10 years ago. I am still in pain every day. read more

Dr. Kaskell was wonderful in every way! I had to have a corrective surgery due to a rod in my tibia fibula region that was causing chronic pain. He was willing to take on the surgery to remove the rod and put me in a special frame to realign my leg. I had other orthopedic surgeon decline to perform the operation. I initially went to see Dr. Haskell because I had been diagnosed with end stage arthritis in my right ankle, the result of a car accident a long time ago. There were 2 options: fusion or ankle replacement. I didn't want a fusion since it would limit mobility, but 2 other surgeons recommended it mainly because that's what they did most of the time (in 2023 ankle replacement was still a fairly new surgery). After doing more in-depth X-rays and evaluation and listening to my concerns, Dr. Haskell felt I was a candidate for ankle replacement. His office staff, PA Nate, the surgery center, and everyone involved all were professional, efficient, and were patient with me and all my questions. All my interactions with Dr. Haskell have been positive and comfortable. The surgery went as expected, and I have no pain or discomfort in my right ankle now. I am very happy I went with Dr. Haskell and had an ankle replacement over fusion, even though it was not the common recommendation. read more

I went to see Dr. Andrew Haskell on Thursday 1/25 for an ankle sprain. He was arrogant, dismissive, spoke over me, and spent a total of 3-4 minutes examining me. He cut me off when I would ask him questions and gave me clipped one-word responses. He was smiling the entire time even when I became visibly upset because I was not being heard. He told me to come back in 5 MONTHS if I was still in pain. I asked him if he thought I tore something in my ankle and he just said "oh im sure you did tear something" with no further information on what implications that might cause for the future or details on what I could have torn. He begrudgingly prescribed me physical therapy so hopefully someone there can answer my questions with more patience, empathy, and kindness. I left here feeling very disheartened and upset and will make it a point to avoid Dr. Andrew Haskell in the future. read more

Visited with MD Haskell to evaluate left knee and discuss possible surgery under local anesthesia. However, was majorly disappointed! I wait about 8-10 minutes in the exam room and he was approximately on time, which is refreshing for an MD appointment. MD Haskell comes barreling into the exam room. Right to the point, he immediate says 'I understand that you are here for possible meniscus surgery and you want it done under a local. I DON'T DO THAT! I only do full anesthesia because I have to move the leg around a lot and the local won't prevent pain. But there is an MD named Warren King who might do it.' I respond that I have had rotator cuff and wrist surgery done as a local. He just repeats "I don't do it". I shrug and say OK but since I am here, can you do a steroid injection to my knee to get me by until I can check this guy out? He says "no". States 'cortisone eats away cartilage so not good.' He should share that with my prior MD who had no problem giving me a cortisone shot in the knee or the MD who gives me 2-3 shots yearly in lumbar S1/S2. And that was the end of the visit. There was no mention of or review of the MRI CD. No attempted negotiation on local anesthesia option, no discussion or re-diagnosis. All in the all, the entire visit was no more than 4 minutes long. Given that MD Haskell knew from the referral when he entered the exam room that I was seeking the operation under local anesthesia AND THAT HE DID NOT DO THIS OPERATION IN THAT MANNER, why not just decline the visit instead of wasting both of our time? He could have had his admin staff reach out to me on the Sutter app or call me with a message and refer me to the other MD. Overall, I found his manner to be brusque and abrupt. read more

I recently broke my ankle (fibula) while hiking and Doctor Haskell did a fantastic job diagnosing the problem, determining that I would need an operation, and doing the surgery. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He took the time to answer any and all of my questions. The operation went well, and he did an excellent job on all the followups. Dr. Haskell was a godsend when I shattered my left ankle joint (trimalleolar fracture + tibia dislocation) in 2016. I had never broken a bone before in my life, and he was first and foremost a very kind, compassionate doctor who helped put me at ease while he gave me the facts. As described by his equally wonderful PA, he is "the" doctor who will go in and fix an ugly, complex fracture that other surgeons won't touch. During surgery, I had 12 screws and two plates inserted to piece together my shattered ankle--yes, it was that bad. (In 2017, he removed it all during an elective second surgery.) He also called me once I was home to check on me. Fast forward five years later, and not only does my ankle feel great, considering the trauma it went through, but I also don't have any signs of arthritis in the joint (I'm in my 40s). I actively play tennis and rarely think about it anymore. My scars are minimal and hardly noticeable, if you care about that sort of thing. I highly recommend Dr. Haskell for anyone who requires orthopedic surgery! read more

I was referred to Dr. Haskell when another doctor (Hunt) would not schedule my surgery because he was interviewing for another job in a different state. I asked Dr. Haskell if he was as good as Dr. Kenneth Hunt. He said he was better, and he proved to be correct. I had been in a car accident that shattered both my ankles. Surgery by a trauma doctor repaired the ankles in Vista, California. My left ankle was damaged again in a fall and the bone had crumbled, which brought me to Dr. Haskell. He is excellent and will be performing another surgery next month, because a knee replacement caused my ankle and foot to turn In (pigeon-toed). He is not only an excellent orthopedic surgeon, but he is kind and very compassionate. I have had nothing but good results from his two prior surgeries, and I highly recommend both Dr. Haskell, and his staff. read more

I consulted Dr. Haskell about in 2010 about an ankle problem. In fact I consulted 4 doctors (2 podiatrists, Dr. Haskell, and a sports medicine podiatrist) about it. I was impressed with Dr. Haskell's professional manner and medical knowledge. He reviewed my MRI before seeing me, patiently answered my questions and took a conservative approach to recommending treatment. In the end I chose another doctor (one of the podiatrists) to perform surgery on my ankle, but Dr. Haskell gave me a good impression and I would probably see him again if I needed an orthopedist for the shoulder, ankle, or knee. Not sure if he does elbows, hips, or hands. (Keep in mind I've only seen him for one consultation.) read more

Dr Haskell was recommended to me by my shoulder surgeon who I trust I usually read reviews before going to a new doctor but I just had no clue of what injury I had and the shoulder surgeon looked at my foot when I was there because he saw me limping and asked why. After I told him he did an MRI and said my achille was torn and my ankle was broken. At that time he suggested I go accross the street to see Dr Haskell immediately. Dr Haskell confirmed the diagnosis and I scheduled surgery on my foot with him. One year later I still couldn't walk on the foot. And had extreme pain. I went back to Dr Haskell and he would always tell me to give it time to heal. I went to urgent care and asked the doctor to look at my surgery and see if something was wrong. He said he would refer my concerns to a foot surgeon. The new foot surgeon sent his findings to another doctor who both of them said the surgery will have to be fixed in order for my foot to heal. The plates and screws in my foot were not in there correctly. Dr Haskell should not be doing surgery. I am in year 2 of recovery and have had a lot of pain but now with the two great doctors that fixed Dr Haskells mistakes I am healing. Beware of this man who calls himself a doctor. read more

I recently had my 7th surgery between my leg being reconstructed (due to a parosteal osteosarcoma) and my ankle. I had the 4th ankle surgery (due to a fall I took on 10/4) on 12/28/12, and it was performed by Dr. Andrew Haskell. I have to say that I am very impressed with Dr. Haskell, his staff, the SurgeCenter at PAMF, the anesthesiologist (as soon as I receive the invoice, I will write a great review for him too). The operating room crew was fun and we all were laughing up until they knocked me out with the general anesthesia. Dr. Haskell was referred to my by my former surgeon of 24 years ago (who is still at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital). I talked with my former surgeon about who I should see (since the ankle is a complicated joint, and mine has issues), and he recommended Dr. Haskell to me. From my first meeting with Dr. Haskell, I felt comfortable. Considering this is not my "first rodeo", that is difficult to make happen with me and surgeons. In the past, I've had a very well-known surgeon here in the Bay Area want to pretty much do an experimental procedure on me, so I am able to recognize the difference between someone who wants to operate due to his "intellectual curiosity" and someone who has my best interests and long-term health at heart. Dr. Haskell is absolutely that latter. He is non-aggressive in terms of recommending surgery out-of-the-gate. Many surgeons would likely recommend an ankle replacement for me at this stage. The issue is that I am much younger than most others that have the replacement, and since they tend to wear out in 10 years, it would be problematic. The procedure done on 12/28 was to "save" my ankle for another 10+ years before a replacement is the next step. During my initial consultation, Dr. Haskell outlined an entire list/flow of things that we could try before surgery to see if I would get relief. We did try a walking boot for about 6 weeks, but my ankle was just not getting better. So, my husband and I discussed the options and scheduled the procedure. After surgery, Dr. Haskell came into the post-op room to check on me. He later came by again and answered a couple of questions I had (like when I could start with my personal trainer again). The surgery was on a Friday, and he even called me on his way home at about 6:00 pm to check on me. Sadly, this is not at all the type of care I've had the last three ankle operations or with most other doctors. Again, I've been down this road a number of times before. If only more doctors were like Dr. Haskell... I am delighted at my choice to select him for my ankle care now and going into the future. My only regret is that I didn't know Dr. Haskell for the first three ankle surgeries! read more

I researched this doctor and the surgery I needed extensively before choosing him. He is very qualified, and very likeable. I still very much like him, even though I didn't end up with a good result, which I consider to not be his fault, just one of those unfortunate life experiences. Still there are some things to consider as to whether this is the right surgeon for you. Prior to your visit, be very informed and be prepared to be your own advocate and ask questions. He's efficient. I referred someone here who reported being in & out in just minutes, so be aware this is a straightforward surgical doctor: if you have an injury, the office visit will be little more than a fast litmus test for whether you are a candidate for surgery or not. If not, you're sent off without any diagnostic, no information about the nature of your injury, nor much in the way of instructions for care while recovering. The shortest possible summary: my (seemingly straightforward & common) surgical procedure on my foot resulted in nerve damage complications for months afterward. At checkups, the doctor was not at all delicate in assessing the surgical area. No coddling here, get right to the point. I have a *very* high pain threshold, yet one of these checkups caused involuntary tears and severe nausea from the pain, such that I couldn't drive for a good half hour afterward. The staff gave me a room to lie in until I could function again. The support staff is great. I spent many months of time and $$ on physical therapy that I by accident found was a useless endeavor: after a fall, an emergency x-ray & review by another podiatrist showed that the entire joint had no cartilage and no amount of rehab would restore range of motion. I was stunned that the degraded joint was not diagnosed after the surgery. Eventually I will need to have another surgery to have the joint fused. A follow up with Dr. Haskell also reviewing the xrays affirmed this. I was shocked, because at no time was I ever informed this was a possible outcome. read more

He should NOT do a surgery that it is in the area of his expertise. He messed up my bunion bone by taking a wrong procedure. After a long time of recovery, pain, and suffering I ended up with a much worse and deformed foot. Luckily, a great podiatrist was able to redo the surgery in a completely different procedure. read more

I wish there was a 0 star because this Dr doesn't deserve anything more than 0. He sends his unqualified assistant to poke and give diagnosis then walks in for 2 minutes once she's done to tell the patient that the assistant is right. Showed him my twisted ankle that was swollen like a balloon, told him about my severe heel pain, and asked for an mri to try and understand what was going on. All he said was"come back in 6 weeks and we'll see"!! He didn't even bother ask how it happened or anything about my lifestyle. Even after I tried to prompt his thinking with "do you think it's planter fascia? "... he wasn't interested ..... I'm a marathoner..... Beware of this guy. read more

Dr. Andrew Haskell literally turned my life around! I was desperate after an crippling ankle injury 20 years ago and didn't know where to turn to get my lower ankle fused. This Review is only for my experience with PAMF Orthopedics department, not specifically to Dr Haskell, I will update my review later after my husband sees Dr Haskell. As I am writing this review, I am still on hold to talk to a receptionist after Monica Armenta (The receptionist) hang up on me. I was on hold for 10 minutes before I can possibly talk to anybody. After Monica talked to me and got all the info, she put me on hold for another 10 minutes as she claimed she needed to check on a patient. Finally she talked to me and told me my husband can not see Dr Haskell because there is no referral, I told her that Dr Kroes specifically asked my husband to see Dr Haskell due to the pain on the right foot, my husband is a marathon runner and he could not run any more due to the pain. Monica checked and found the referral, but still insisted that my husband should not see Dr Haskell. So I asked her whether she is a specialist or just help scheduling, she put me on hold again and said she need to check with the nurse. After another wait, she said she could schedule now, the earliest is 19th April. I told her it is fine, then she, all of the sudden, could not hear me any more............., then the phone was disconnected. I was in my office and my phone is totally fine. Update: I finally talked to a nice lady name Susan. She set up the appointment quickly without any issue. She also saw the referral in the system immediately and explained that Dr Haskell has a long wait but if it is totally fine if I don't mind waiting. All my family are going to PAMF, we love the doctors and nurses there, this is our first bad experience. Monica's unprofessional behavior is totally unacceptable and we sincerely hope this is just one individual and does not reflect the overall image of PAMF. read more

I was referred to Dr Haskell for an ankle problem post trauma and post previous surgical repair. I entered with a ton of questions, and I have to say I am surprised by some of the other reviewers comments on this docs level of interest and patience in an individual situation. My appointment started on time, actually 5 minutes early, and his first question was "tell me whats going on with your ankle" and he listened to me patiently for several minutes, then we discussed my xray and MRI results, and he presented me with 3 different surgical options and many non surgical options to aid with comfort and pain relief to put some time between a new surgery and my last one. He answered my multitude of questions about each option, addressed every anxious concern about each, and gave me his opinion on the best direction. I felt much better informed about my situation and better prepared to tackle it after leaving his office. He spent 30 minutes with me and I never once felt rushed. I can not rate this experience high enough and when surgery becomes my only final step for pain relief I would not hesitate returning to this office and specifically to this this doctor. read more

This review is long overdue. My primary care physician recommended Dr. Haskell after Stanford messed up my first ankle surgery when I was 35 week pregnant. Dr. Haskell performed the corrective surgery when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I was very impressed with his thoroughness in preparation for the surgery and the professionalism, thoughtfulness, and effectiveness exhibited by himself and his surgical team throughout the surgery. read more
