I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so unprofessional that I feel obligated to warn others. A few weeks ago, I had a consultation with Dr. Erickson. He examined me and told me that my bone was far too thin for an implant. He was very clear that a bone graft was absolutely necessary and that placing an implant without one was simply not possible. Based on that professional recommendation, I scheduled my surgery with Dr. Pope, took time off work, arranged my schedule, and mentally prepared myself for a bone graft. Imagine my surprise when I was already sitting in the surgical chair and was suddenly told that they would be placing the implant instead. How does one doctor say an implant is impossible, while another completely changes the treatment plan without informing the patient beforehand? Why wasn't I called before my appointment? Why wasn't I given the opportunity to discuss the change, ask questions, or even decide whether I agreed with this completely different approach? Changing a surgical plan after the patient is already in the chair is unacceptable and incredibly unprofessional. It got even worse. While I was sitting there, stressed and about to undergo surgery, they presented me with an estimate based on my insurance supposedly covering part of the procedure. The problem is that I had spoken with the front desk several times before my appointment, and every single time I was clearly told that my insurance would not cover anything. When I questioned the numbers, they initially insisted they were correct. Only after I challenged them did they admit the estimate was wrong and give me the actual out-of-pocket cost. Even after all of this, I decided to move forward. The doctor numbed my mouth, began the procedure, and started using the robotic system they advertise so proudly. A few minutes later, everything stopped. I was told they couldn't continue because my mouth was too small for the robot. Seriously? Isn't determining whether a patient is even a candidate for robotic surgery the entire purpose of the consultation? This should have been identified weeks earlier--not after I had taken time off work, received anesthesia, and the procedure had already begun. Their response was, "Don't worry, we won't charge you." That completely misses the point. The issue isn't the charge. The issue is the wasted time, the unnecessary stress, the poor communication, the contradictory treatment plans, the incorrect financial information, and the fact that no one seemed prepared before bringing me into surgery. This wasn't just disappointing--it showed a complete lack of organization and professionalism. I will never return, and I would strongly discourage anyone considering treatment here from assuming that proper communication, planning, and patient care are priorities. read more

I always get my teeth cleaned by Amanda and she's the best! Been seeing Dr Pope for years and has been everything I've wanted in a general dentist. Reception is always very professional and prompt.

This review is not for the dentists, who are very good (especially Dr. Erickson). This review is for their front office, with a focus on Julie, their office manager and their billing practices. I had a lot of work done, extraction, bone graft, implants. I have good insurance, but dental work is expensive. All this work was done in a single year. At no point did anyone walk me through the cost, I asked multiple times and no one at the front really knew what they were talking about. I paid 1k for extraction and graft, 5 mo. later found out there was a pending claim and I owed another 1.2k on top of the 3.5k the implants cost. When I asked for the ledger, the front desk sent me a very confusing overview that even their office manager, Julie couldn't walk me through. Then she sent me a completely illegible doc. While they offered a 20% discount, it's completely unclear what I'm even being charged for. There's 0 transparency for billing at this office and the customer service is very poor which is very disappointing since the dentists are phenomenal. Coliseum Dental is hands down one of the best dental offices in the Bay Area. From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, my experience was nothing short of amazing. The office has a beautiful, modern vibe, and the staff were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. Melissa, the dental hygienist, gave me one of the most thorough cleanings I've ever had -- and I get my teeth cleaned professionally at least once a year. She even gave me some great toothbrush recommendations. My teeth have never felt this clean! Dr. Gavan was fantastic -- friendly, down-to-earth, and easy to talk to. We discussed cosmetic procedures, and he gave me his honest opinion on whether composite bonding would be a good option for me. A lot of dental offices feel like they're more focused on selling services than actually helping you, but that wasn't the case here. I felt like a person, not a dollar sign. ***Five stars typically, but three stars for my last visit. I'm writing this review for people with dental anxiety*** I've gone to Coliseum Dental (previously Pope Dental) for a few years - I found them while researching good dentals for people with dental anxiety. Everyone in the practice has been extremely gentle and understanding, making me feel comfortable. It has helped my anxiety greatly. My personal favorite is Dr Mojica and then all the hygienists have been great, really. I recently had an appointment with Dr Greenlaw for a crown and two cavities. She was nice and I made sure she knew about my dental anxiety and she was gentle at first. I did have nitrous that wasn't working unfortunately - I think how the position my mouth needed to be in was breaking the seal so I wasn't able to breathe in enough. I was doing okay, though. After she moved on from the crown, she went to numb the other side of my mouth. But she didn't warn me -- I thought she was going in to put on the topical to numb me, but instead it was the needle. It was one of the shots that go way back and into what feels like the jaw muscles. I gasped from the pain and was shocked. And instead of pausing to see if I was okay, she went to the other cavity site and injected a couple times there, too. Again, without applying any topical. I started crying. I don't know exactly why, but likely from the anxiety, shock, and initial pain of the injection. I'm postpartum as well so I'm sure my hormones are all out of whack, too. But I couldn't stop crying so we stopped while I calmed down. I was able to complete the appointment after, but it did set me back anxiety wise. I thought it was standard practice to use some topical before doing injections. Six days later I still have some pain in my jaw if I open wide, so I decided to write a review. For those with anxiety, make sure you talk through what they can do to ease your pain and nerves. I'm sure Dr. Greenlaw is a great dentist, and my experience is not typical, but just FYI in case it is helpful. read more

Being new to Walnut Creek, I did not have a dentist yet. Of course, I had a dental emergency over the weekend. Searching "best dentist in Walnut Creek," I found Coliseum Dental. To my amazement, they answered the phone and saw me immediately Monday morning and put on a new crown. They have amazing technology to do everything on the spot (e.g. X-rays, making the crown). I have been a patient of Dr. Pope's since 2013. I was starting a new job at MetLife after not finding work for years, and I woke to find my dog ate my dental appliance that I used for a missing front tooth. I called Pope Dental and they were able to put a temporary fix that day allowing me to start my first day of work with out stress! Found Pope Dental on the internet for a "Snap-On-Smile" dental appliance. Things were pleasant with the exception to Teresa, the receptionist. Teresa immediately made me feel uncomfortable with her demeaning tone and words when helping me with anything. When a person of color as myself experience demeaning service from a receptionist in the beginning, something is seriously wrong within their core. I had planned to have some implant work done there but changed my mind after Teresa sought-out a confrontation with me and had one of her co-worker help her. I will never go there again! Working with Dr. Scott Pope Dental was so disappointing. Their office manager (Julie) was unable to manage or book patients in a reasonable, safe and reliable timeframe for medical procedures. I had an urgent need for dental care and she failed to follow up on four occasions over a period of 12-16 weeks, after multiple promises made by her. She had one excuse after the other when I finally was able to track her down as to what the status was and why she hadn't followed up as promised. To make matters worse, the doctor moved to the East Coast and lives there much of the time so good luck getting on his calendar. Talk about a "non client centric" medical practice. So my friends, do not waste your time on Dr. Scott Pope dental office, get referred to a more reliable one worth your money that will not waste months of your time and keep you in dental no man's land. read more

That was honestly the best and most seamless dental experience I've ever had. I was beyond impressed by every single step of the process--from booking the appointment over the phone to wrapping up with receptionist. After moving cities, I had to switch dentists, which is never a fun process. I checked out what dentists were covered by my insurance in my area and then looked on Yelp to find the well-rated ones. The reviews for Pope Dental mentioned great experiences, staff that makes you feel comfortable, and advanced technology--plus it's only a five-minute drive from my house. Making an appointment was super easy. I got an email with new patient forms right after getting off the phone--all very simple and straightforward. They called to verify my appointment time the day before plus sent a text the morning of. When I arrived, the receptionist was very welcoming, recognizing that it was my first time visiting the office. She took my name and said she'd let them know I'd arrived. Just a short couple minutes later, my hygienist Dave came out and took me to the back. He was nice, friendly, welcoming, and genuine. Everyone made me feel really special as a new patient that chose their dental office. Truthfully, I got the feeling like it was too good to be true at that point, and then it just kept getting better. The cleaning itself went great. Dave was thorough and meticulous but gentle with a steady hand. He explained everything he was doing and answered all my questions--his responses were detailed and educational. He is clearly excellent at his role and in this industry! He suggested some things that I could consider, but he was never pushy or salesy. Dr. Pope came in during the cleaning, and his visit was quick, efficient, and personable. Then, Dave finished the cleaning, and I opted in for the fluoride ($30), but again, I didn't feel pressured to get it. As my fluoride was sitting, he went to the front to have the receptionists check to see what my insurance would cover of the suggested treatments. They later had estimates drawn up, based on my insurance, ready for me to take home and consider for the future (and again, no pressure, which definitely hasn't been the case at other dentists I've been to). Lastly, we booked my next appointment six months out right there as I was finishing up in the chair. He gave me the dental goodie bag (floss, toothbrush, etc.) and walked me up to the front where they handed me the treatment estimates. I highly recommend coming here! It's not very often that you feel immediately comfortable in a dentist office, whether that's the actual cleaning procedure or the customer service experience. I am not really sure what to say about my experience at Pope Dental. I arrived on time for my appointment and waiting 25 minutes until I was seen. The staff keep apologizing and commenting not so quietly in the back that the dentist really had to hurry up and this wasn't acceptable. It was nice that they even cared but I was a little annoyed that it was so late. The actual dental appointment was very good and I was really happy with everything but the follow through after the appointment has been really bad. They were supposed to call my old dentist to get my Xrays and I was supposed to come back to have some work done. Two weeks went by with no answers and I called to which they answered, oh yeah, your dentist never sent the X-rays over. Ok, why can't you follow up? Why am I the one calling you? Another week goes by and I finally got a call saying my insurance went through (I received a bill in the mail which was annoying) and that I can schedule my next appointment. However, when I asked about the Xrays, they said oh yeah, we never did that. They said they would call tomorrow and get back to me the next day. It has been another week with no contact. In short, the actual dentist appointment was very good but the waiting and everything after that initial visit has been poor. I will be looking for another dentist that is more on top of things than this one. read more

Worst experience ever paid 16k for crowns he only did partial crowns and now I have cavities in the tooth again and have to pay for full crowns I went in for cosmetic crowns so that both sides of my smile would match he only did Partial Which was on authorized by me I totally thought I was getting a full crown not only that he was excited for his weekend or pissed or something so he bruised my whole face it was the worst dental experience of my life read more

Most highly recommended! So far I've seen Dr. Pope and Dr. Erickson. Both are highly skilled technicians. I'd like to extend a "thank-you" and name the rest of the staff also, but with the skulduggery of the InterWeb, I'll thank them personally. My main objective was treatment that was as conservative as possible (saving as much tooth as I can, because technology gets better every year). Also, the modern imaging they use takes all of any guesswork out of the process. Other dentists usually wanted to get aggressive when not necessary. Thankfully, I have not experienced that at this office in the least. One thing most people worry about is the numbing injections. Here, they use a topical first, and then the injection is literally imperceptible (+20 bonus!). Dr. Erickson should write an article on his technique, which is the most unique I've ever experienced. He and Camille are an excellent team in "Painless Numbery". From there, it's a breeze. In a couple of hours, none of my crowns nor root canals (via Dr. Jensen down the hall) gave me any pain whatsoever. Next day, I had no discomfort at all. Now my teeth feel "back to completely natural" and my bite (my occlusion) is as good as it's ever been. In the past my bite was always a little wonkey, but not here (+10 bonus!). Someone from the office even calls the next day to make sure everything is fine and that there is no pain. Nice! One reason for my current dental work was shying away because of perceived pain; and now I regret having procrastinated. I should have caught some of these things earlier, but unfortunately I let things get worse than I should have. So far I've had root canal, ZOOM whitening, bonding a chipped tooth, changing very old fillings to new tooth-colored composites, CEREC crowns & even an implant. Seems I've had a bit of everything in the last few weeks. This is more than some might consider is necessary; but now I just want to do this right and maintain it very well. Huge improvement! I wish I had done this years ago. I don't think I could be happier. I like that all the work is done in-house (except for root canals down the hall w/ Dr. Jensen). I didn't want to be seeing lots of different dentists for ortho, endo, perio, family work, etc. as was the case in the past. Easy to get to, easy parking. All bonuses. No one really wants to go to the dentist, but the staff here make it as a good as possible. The hygienists are so careful - you don't feel a thing - and yet, go home with polished, perfect teeth. They adapt to your needs and make you as comfortable as possible. The office is state of the art and you can even watch your crown being made. People come from all over to see Dr. Pope - that says a lot. I also want to commend their billing department who works so hard to get the insurance companies to pay.
