Every person I interacted with (including over the phone with the presurgery nurse and the check-in receptionist) was competent, respectful, and extremely kind. I was given the opportunity to speak to my gastrologist, Dr. Hillary Bownick, and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Kathleen Berger-Gillen and her assistant Emily, prior to the procedure. I spoke to each one individually at which time they each did an excellent job of explaining the procedure, and offered me the opportunity to ask questions. While in the procedure room, they explained everything they were doing BEFORE they did it. Everyone was very competent, respectful, and extremely kind to me. I especially want to acknowledge and express my appreciation for their empathy and extreme kindness about my request for an all female medical team. I am a rape survivor and have diagnosed PTSD from being extremely, horribly abused by two male doctors in 1993. So all of my doctors are women, but patients do not get to choose nurses, technicians, or anesthesiologists at hospitals, surgical or screening centers. I can not overstate how grateful I am for their kind response to my request and for arranging for me to have an all female team!! Thank you Mid America Surgery Institute!!!

And if the only thing they could fix is a can that won't open, they'd be the University of Canopeners Hospital. But they're not. This Hospital looks really fancy and has had a massive revamp since the first time I was here, or feels like it anyway... and the part that you probably are most familiar with unless you have been in here a lot is the spectacular bridge for pedestrians right over the roadway. The inside is less spectacular. Bad hygiene for a hospital. Insane wait times. Some pretty unfriendly people. But they do see everyone and take care of everyone - as best they can - and I appreciate that. Our wait was close to 2 hours but it could have been worse, I suppose.

The radiology department all this time have been cloning my diagnostic reports and never looking at the actual scan. Even leaving fragments of sentences that were copied and pasted saying "redemonstrates from 2023" not even looking at 2025 scan that shows it at 31mm. Sunday May 31st I coughed up blood with both lungs collapsed at the base due to tumor size and also blood in my urine due to the tumor restricting the blood flow to my kidneys and a partially paralyzed colon. The radiologist said there was no tumor it was gone and the ER doctor just took his word and sent me home. Today June 2nd I have a telehealth visit with vascular and she viewed the scans and found the mass. She's refusing to correct the mistake made by ER and radiology and admit me as I should have been Sunday and the only reasoning is "it was a telehealth visit not in person so no request to admit". Check your scans!!! They have only copied and pasted not once in six months have any one in radiology actually viewed my scans and they used an outdated report "redemonstrates from 2023 leaving the 2025 six fold growth out. Good thing for KU I had that appointment today because I had stopped the blood thinners that are keeping blood moving around a small space of the MASS. I would have certainly died had I not had that appointment today. And the issues their negligent has caused in my family is inconsevable I've been alienated from my entire family. Any one know a vicious malpractice attorney? Knowing they screwed up and still unwilling to fix it with a lame " no in person visit no admission referral"

My sister received care when it was time for medications, but otherwise staff were invisible. Never was she given mouth care or help getting a bath. She ate almost nothing for breakfast on Saturday so I didn't order another meal for her the entire weekend. The Saturday's breakfast tray was left on her counter until Monday morning's nurse came in her room. Nobody kept track of what she drank and nobody seemed to notice that she hadn't eaten all weekend. I would help her turn on the nurses light when she was hurting and needed to be turned. It was common for her to wait 45 minutes to have anyone begrudgingly answer her light. At one point they used a plastic turning sheet under her to move her into position. They let that slick, hot, plastic sheet under her for a full day, ignoring her complaints of how hot and sweaty she felt lying on plastic hour after hour. It was nearly impossible to get any nursing care. No one in leadership made rounds. Of course, no nurse did any type of hourly rounding. PT worked with her once and determined she was too weak to work with them, so nobody even worked to get her to sit up in bed. They knew so little about her that when it was time for her to be transferred to a rehab facility, they ordered a wheelchair van to transport her! The transporter came & suddenly six nursing staff were in her room to transfer her from her dirty bed to the wheelchair. My sister became dizzy and nauseous sitting up for the first time in a week. My guess is that the staff had no idea that her slowness was due to physiological reasons but thought maybe she was being lazy. One young woman screamed in her face to comply. My sister died at the rehab facility a week or so later. I pushed to get her back there because I knew she would get the care she needed and be treated like a human being. It's been two and a half years since she passed. I wish the nightmare she experienced at Menorah would pass from my mind. My only regret is that I felt so out of control with nobody in leadership to help us get her the care she needed. My hope is that nobody else will suffer at the hands of the Menorah nursing staff like she did.

From the very first visit, I was treated not just as a patient, but as a human being. I especially want to recognize Lynn at reception for always being warm and welcoming. They take the time to listen, explain every step, and make sure I feel comfortable and cared for. I have never once felt rushed or dismissed. Dr. Justensen is knowledgeable, attentive, and truly compassionate. The level of empathy and quality of care this team provides goes beyond medical treatment -- they restore confidence, dignity, and hope during a very vulnerable time. Wound care can be physically and emotionally draining, but this team makes you feel safe, supported, and respected every step of the way. I highly recommend KU's Wound Care to anyone needing specialized, compassionate treatment. You will truly be in the best hands.
