The honey wine is served in a traditional berele which I liked, but I did not like the wine at all. Tasted house-made and under fermented. I recommend if you're into liquid sugar. This is the worst ethiopian spot I've ever been to, but it's decent for take-out/uber eats. As children and adults, using your hands to eat was frowned upon. Fried chicken and a few other dishes were exceptions. Although, to be honest, I'm one of the few people in the world who grew up eating fried chicken with a knife and fork. Let me introduce you to Ethiopian food, where utensils aren't usually used. I guess you could call it a hands on experience. The best way to experience it in central New Jersey is at Dashen Ethiopian Cuisine in New Brunswick. https://www.dashenethiopiannj.com/ Dashen, managed by a husband and wife team - Alemayehu Hailu and Tsigereda Lemlemayehu, also offers a full bar and a big screen TV for sports events. It is a delightful place for a special meal. They also do catering. The meal starts with injera - a spongy, fermented flatbread that is spread over a large serving plate. The other foods are placed on top of this sort of sour dough bread. All of the dishes - meats and vegetables - are well cooked with fragrant sauces. They are served with a pile of folded injera. How do you eat it? You rip off a piece of injera and use it to grab some meats or vegetables or scoop them up. Then you pop it into your mouth. The sourly fermented bread and other dishes make a great combination. Whether you go for meat or vegetables, the keys here are the spices. There's a chicken dish called Doro Wot. It is simmered in a special spice sauce with onions, garlic and ginger. And served with a hard boiled egg. There are dishes of cubed beef and ground beef, and lamb. There's a lamb stew called Yebeg Alicha with onions, garlic, ginger, peppers, turmeric and other spices. The same spices can be applied to a fish fillet, salmon or shrimp. But my favorites are the vegetables. There's Misir Wot, split lentils simmered with special spices, onions, garlic, tomatoes and ginger. Gomen is collard greens with onions, spices, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and jalapenos. Tikal Gomen is cabbage with the same spice combination. Kik Wot is yellow split peas cooked with garlic, ginger, tomatoes and special spices. Dinich Alicha looks like a mixed vegetable plate with potatoes, carrots, string beans, garlic, ginger, tomatoes and spices. The food can be very spicy or quite mild. Talk to your server so you order the dishes that are to your taste. The best way to eat Ethiopian food is on a combination plate. Go with a small group of friends. Have a combination plate of meat dishes. Order another combination plate of vegetarian dishes. That will give you eight to 10 different dishes to sample. Different beans and meats and vegetables. There's a variety of textures and flavors. And eat it slowly. In fact, don't just eat it. Savor it. Really enjoy each delicious taste. Eating Ethiopian food at Dashen is not just a meal. It's an experience. You can get takeout or delivery. But it is so much better in the restaurant. I urge you to get out of your culinary rut and visit Dashen. Dashen Ethiopian Restaurant & Bar 88 Albany Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 732-249-0494 They are closed Mondays.

My wife had the Vegetable Rice Plate and I had the Grilled Lemongrass Porkchops. We also each had a Jasmine tea, and the Fresh Spring Rolls (not fried) with chicken and shrimp. The seasoning was unique and very tasty, in particular on the veggies and tofu in my wife's diner, my grilled chops, and the chicken in our spring roll. Each was different and delightful. A big plus for us were the vegan dishes for my daughter. We did takeout for her. She ordered the Curry Tofu and Veg Rice, and veggie egg rolls. Very reasonable for the city. About $85 for all three of us including tip.

After ordering, I saw people at the next table asking for takeout containers for their leftover Pho, and now I understand why. I ordered the chicken Pho for $17. The portion was enormous, but honestly, I'd recommend the small one for $12, it's definitely enough. The broth was a bit too salty for me and didn't have that deep, rich flavor I usually expect from Pho. There was a lot of chicken and noodles, though, so it's a hearty bowl. The place itself is spacious with plenty of seating, but our table wasn't very clean when we sat down. Service was quick, probably because it wasn't too busy. Overall, not the best pho I've had, but not bad either, a solid 4 stars.

A short walk later, I found myself at Destination Dogs, a place I had seen in photographs that suggested capaciousness. In reality, it is smaller.  This is not a complaint, just an observation.  I remember once hearing something about the contents of small packages. At 12:30 the place was full. Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars. Not because perfection exists, but because this comes close enough to make the argument.

Walked in to a nice coffe bar area which did not seem functional .it well decorated with some antique accents keys if different shapes n sizes We were seated and a waiter took our order immediately. The place was a bit busy for a weekday. Complementary wam pita bread n ezme , sun dried tomatoes n spicy jalapeños were not bad . A paper form being warm there was nothing more to it. Got the mixed grill for two which was served with a side of soup and salad . Both sides were delicious. The grilled chicken kebabs and chops were passable though not juicy . All Lamb kebab choices were tough and chewy . This is a mediocre spot as I age v had better Kebabs in the same area . Not my kind of food.

Here I am... 12 years later to update my review!…read more My sister picked Sahara for my birthday dinner because she knows that I love Mediterranean (big change since my last review--a lot has happened in over a decade lol) There is a parking lot, but it is really small and was filled when we visited. On the street parking shouldn't really be an issue in the area. We found with no issue on a Tuesday evening. Inside is cozy.. could be a little warmer, but I'll give that it was an exceptionally cold December evening. The atmosphere gives cozy vibes though, which I appreciate. We were immediately seated upstairs, where they have plenty of large group seating options. Service was attentive and fast. We ordered a round of delicious appetizers.. hummus, saksuka, cheese rolls.. all of it was delicious. I especially loved the octopus app special.. magnificent! Entrees were especially of large portion, which was greatly appreciated. Everything tasted fresh and was beautifully presented. I ordered the Pyramid chicken which was delicious. Their chicken is flavorful and juicy. For dessert, my keskul was amazing! Plenty of pistachio on top with a delicate and very well balanced vanilla custard. I could eat that daily. I definitely plan on returning!!

First, staff is super -super nice!! helpful when trying to decide what to order. Mini Me and I both chose three tacos carne asada with the smokey roja sauce. Hubby had the same but as a burrito. For the sides we had chips and guacamole and the Mexican street corn. Drink were Horchata (Obviously). Tacos and burrito were stuffed, and absolutely delish. They have a self serve salsa bar with the three salsa, the smokey roja, salsa verde and habanero. Let me just say I tried all three- fantastic heat to flavour ration and I poured the habanero on my tacos so good! in fact the smokey roja with the salsa verde is a great combination !! Seating area outside is much larger than inside, we sat inside at a table that had just become available- they do a super brisk take out business and we didn't wait very long for our food to be ready. In fact, my husband and Mini-Me - all three of us, agreed we would for sure make the drive again to have tacos here!! If you are in the area or at school near by- you have to come here at least once, to try the food. I paid for my hubby since he was not my +1 and his meal was about $16. so that in itself is very very reasonable for the amount of food you get. We were very pleased with the food, service and price point.

Sandwich which is the star of my meal was smaller than the palm of my hand, ordered it with baba, there was less than a teaspoon at best, lamb was dry, no vegetables hardly at all. Sandwich was falling apart by the second bite because the pita was thinner than a fingernails thickness. Soup was great as always, the pistachio baklava was superb. The he prices aren't bad but if you factor in that they're not training their cooks to assemble their signature sandwiches and platters to the standard of Mamoun's, it's a waste of money and time ordering here. When I first got the order delivered I called, no manager, said call back, next day, couldn't reach the manager, third day later, no manager and a young woman in her teens clearly not interested in my comments and getting exasperated with me on the phone, she composed herself, but honestly, my comments are spot on. I told her to tell the manager to look at the reviews on Yelp and Google, wasn't looking for a free meal to make up for the really amateur sandwich only a college student in their dorm would be proud of assembling, I simply like the fact that Mamoun's is near my house and management it clearly failing. I left my name and number, have ZERO FAITH I will be contacted back, they don't seem to care. Update: 7 days later, no manager called. These guys just do not care, way to treat a good and EX customer. #fail
