I'd love to get better if anyone wants to play at the club or elsewhere! This is the only organized place to play club Go in Seattle that I'm aware of, and it's a really great place to play. The membership is varied in skill, walk of life, and personality - so there's almost always someone who matches your profile to play with. There are some kids who go on children's night on Tuesday who are very highly ranked, and wipe the floor with me on a regular basis. It's quite an ego hit, but I've gotten sorta used to it. What's great about the membership is their willingness to teach beginners! I walked in knowing only the basic rules of the game and I came out of my first few sessions understanding basic opening principles and some life-and-death problems. I think I would improve by four stones if I could just learn when my groups are in danger and when I can play tenuki... but I do believe that I can learn that all at the Seattle Go Center! The facilities are simple and plain, but mostly pretty clean. There are plenty of Go boards in good condition, and the stones are mostly plastic, but there are some slate and shell sets in storage for important games. Also, there is a tatami room with a very elegant floor table, complete with some traditional Japanese decorations. The center runs tournaments every once in a while, and also invite domestic and international high-dan level players to play simuls and to give lessons. This is an incredible benefit of membership. If you play Go (also known as Igo, Baduk, and Weiqi), you really should check this place out. Get your butt kicked by a 12-year-old prodigy!

The Seattle Elks 92 is the 1st Elks lodge in WA state & preceded WA by a year. There is nearby Ballard Elks 827 3.2 miles away which is confused a lot with Seattle, especially when building was under construction, & a previous negative review was meant for Ballard 827 because there was no building at the time here. Elks bought the land for Seattle Children's Hospital on top of Queen Anne, created VA Hospital, Veterans Day, Flag Day, 3rd in scholarships after US Govt, & has Tall Elks Therapy program providing 100% medical for a child, VA services funding, & Youth programs. The premier American charitable organization. Best People On Earth! New lodge building has 2 bars on 2 floors, event space for rental to the public, & a kitchen. 3 decks overlooking the Lake WA ship canal next to the Fremont Bridge in north Queen Anne. This is a members & their guests lodge, but public can rent their upstairs event space with a bar that holds 85 & a view deck.

She was upfront with what was included, required, and thoroughly answered my questions. We opted to have bar service, with 2 drink tickets per person. Elks was able to provide us with the tickets, which I handed out to each attendee upon arrival. I loved that we could bring in our own food, but they also have preferred catering vendors. The view is incredible, and the patio is a great spot during golden hour. We even saw a boat go by! All of the staff was incredibly kind and helpful, they set up the entire room for us including linens. I cannot recommend Shannon and the Elks staff enough. My dad is retiring soon, and we will probably host that party here as well! Just an all around great venue and group of people.

While in Seattle over the weekend, I happened upon the Seattle Rueda website when searching for something to do on a Sunday afternoon. "Seattle Rueda" is a website/blog which covers all the Casino de Rueda/Cuban Salsa activities in the Seattle area. As it so happens, Sundays are a night they have Rueda practice. Score! During the warm months, Rueda practice is outside at Gasworks Park. Specifically, the practice is on the Wallingford Steps--these are a steps which are just across the street from Gasworks Park. It's such a perfect spot. The steps are cool with lots of tile work, and there are large circular areas which are just perfect for a rueda. This area is also nice, because the surrounding buildings offer shade, and the breeze from the water was also nice...until it got chilly toward the end (but I'm hot-blooded, so I was happy!). So, the practice is for two hours. If there are new dancers, one can get some introductory lessons/basics off to the side. I am fairly familiar with rueda so I was more interested in getting some practice in "the wheel". The group was really cool. Once everybody showed up we had about 30-40 people dancing the rueda (we even had a circle on the inside of the big one). There was mainly one caller for the evening. We went over some of the basic moves. She even worked in some new moves for everyone. The people were all very nice and welcoming. I'm new to Rueda & Casino (Cuban Salsa), so it was good to see how other people dance to this style of dance. I had a totally awesome time! Oh, I did forget to "donate" $5 (I'll do that next time). Their music was played of a small boom box which skipped sometime---it didn't matter though--we all had fun. As the weather gets colder, I hear they will move practice indoors somewhere up in Greenwood. Be sure to check their website for practice info and any other Cuban Salsa info in the Seattle area. I can't wait to dance with this group again!

We have been very happy with Wallingford B&G club for after school care, as well as occasional days…read moreduring school breaks. The staff seem very engaged and energetic and my daughter has only good things to say about her time there. It's a good fit for my child because she's really outgoing; I could see it being a little overwhelming for shy kids. I like that they transition between areas (reading room, gym, game room) and they have a good amount of community events, like a Halloween party that the teens seem to be really involved with planning, and a dinner a couple days before Thanksgiving. We really appreciate the chance for my daughter to meet kids from other schools and like that this is an affordable, safe option for care.

As a Boys & Girls recipient myself, I was ecstatic to have my child enrolled. The staff for the…read moremost part was great. Granted, this enrollment was during COVID and parents were not allowed inside. It was hard communicating with the staff that were interacting with my child much less even meeting them in person. It was primarily a trust issue on my behalf because of the lack of face to face interaction. Also, most of the staff did not have children themselves and complained about behavior from kids that perhaps a teacher or a parent would be able to troubleshoot. This only made some of the staff sound like teenagers themselves complaining about a younger sibling. My daughter enjoyed her time at Boys and Girls Club on 45th. They had lots of activities to keep the kids active.

This parade is an annual event in Wallingford. It just keeps getting bigger and better…read more Children are in costume. Some ar pulled in wagons, some dance. There is a recycling crew. Several drill teams from South Seatytle come to perform; a school band, the Sweafair pirates. Me, passing out flyers. St. Benedict's, John Stanford Schools. I see many neighbors and friends. At the end is a large fun festival. It's still going on. You can get there to day if you hurry.

Given the numbers of reviews here which mention the "owner" being rude, this is what I came here to…read morewrite, amongst other things. The rental started out fine - a young woman helped me figure out the boat size, get me checked in, and familiar with the route and map. Then she disappeared, and someone changed the boat she ordered (which we carefully figured out was right for me) to a different longer boat. I'm not sure why. It was a cloudy day and there were about 75 available green plastic boats. She had mentioned there was a new boat, even shorter than the 14' one she put me in, but somehow it was too hard to get to (according to the rude gentleman who took over for her. He was saying snarky things to me, like would I mind if the boat they gave me was 5" longer than the one they promised???? It made not sense. I was solo kayaking in the afternoon. The young man who put me in the boat told me before he pushed me off that he would be going over some safety points. That consisted of one tip - always keep your lifejacket on. Speaking of safety - I have about 12 years of experience kayaking and having a whistle is pretty important. They had to search several PFD's to find one with a whistle. I had to ask for that. I was kayaking SOLO! Should have been a given. They have a set way of putting people in boats which starts with sitting on the metal grated dock. I am in my 6th decade of life, and getting down to sitting on the ground like that isn't a slam dunk. Plus I had a scraped knee (us oldsters have falls). The guy wasn't reading the room. When I asked him to adjust the foot pedals, he snapped back that he was going to do that next. Anyway, they recommended I make my way across the wide channel to the other side where the houseboats were, but I felt wobbly right there at the dock and thought better of that and instead hugged the side of the channel we were already on. There was no instruction as to what to do if the boat tipped over. Not that they could have given me a whole wet exit lesson - I already knew what to do, but I certainly didn't want to capsize and with all the motor boat activity that afternoon, I knew the paddle would be a bit nerve wracking. On the way out (after just 30 minutes, having returned to the dock to get out of the water) I told the young woman at the check out that they need to add an "in case of emergency" phone number to the waiver. Her response was silly "we are the emergency phone number". Yes, well if I were to capsize and perhaps drown, you might need to reach someone ON MY END. Duh. Rude man had some parting remarks I wasn't interested in. Because of his snarkiness alone, I'll never be back and am telling others. I think he is in the wrong business.
