I was able to get up and hydroplane. I couldn't quite get to actually foil but I did way better than I expected and that was all due to Brett! He is very clear, patient and fun to work with. I have an old prone Paddleboard I had tried for a few years to get some work done on. I could never…read moreget anyone they works on boards to even call me back. Surf Ballard took up the challenge and exceeded expectations. I had wanted to get 2 fin bays on the bottom replaced with larger fin bays and have one installed on top for a water bottle holder. The traction pad was really old and there had been some amateur patch work done right next to it. Also the nose and tail were pretty beat up and looked like some other amateur patch work had been done there. I had hoped they would be able to do all of this but they couldn't. They had the foresight and did due diligence by contacting the original shaper and found out that the fin bay installation would not have been supported by the internal structure. So disappointed they couldn't do it but stoked they found out before cutting in and destroying the board. They were able to take care of everything else and I heard the old traction pad was a b&tch to get off but they did a great job and for a great price. See before and after pictures.

I'm not used to having to do everything myself. What is even more disturbing is that, they do mention as part of the directions, if you have difficulty carrying it, especially if you have back problems and such, no staff member can help you. There's also no staff at the beach to help in anyway. We got there at 440 pm which is ten min later than our appointment at 430, only to be told we had to wait for our kayaks to be cleaned after we struggled to find parking. For the time it took to wait for the kayaks to be cleaned, to the transport back and forth, if you want more time on the water for the buck, go somewhere else like Moss Bay or WAC or even Greenlake. If you are late in returning it, it is $1 per minute.

Felix and Fong were great to work with and were able to fit our group that kept varying in size (from 25 to 12 to 13 on the actual day). Note: They have multiple boats and also have volunteers and other team members that were training to help coach and possibly paddle if needed. So they are ready to accommodate any group size. Day of: parking was easy near the Kenmore Airport and free on the weekends! We easily found the Seattle Flying Dragons crew. They provided each person a life vest and bottle of water, and locked our personal belongings in their shed. We started with some on shore teaching about dragon boat history and the team's background. Then we got into the boat and learned some techniques close to shore. As we paddled (not rowed) our way into Lake Union, we were provided some more technical training and different types of drills. We were never asked to do more than we could physically but were challenged and encouraged. It was such a positive team building exercise. We went by the house boats and all the way to Gasworks before sprinting back to the starting dock. All in all, we felt accomplished and proud of what we could do in an hour. I highly encourage anyone to try this at least one. And no, you dont need to know how to swim. Even though at times we felt like we were about to capsize, it was all fine and safe. Costed: per the instructions on their website we donated $25 per person. They are a 501c3 so it is tax deductible - print the pdf receipt.

It was intimidating at first because I had never tried the sport before and my mind, at the time, was swirling with doubts & hesitations about meeting new people after hearing so much about the infamous "Seattle Freeze." However I knew I had to give it shot and see what dragon boating and, moreover, the seattle freeze were all about! I recall on my first day of practice, despite my uncertainties, I was immediately greeted by several paddlers who were thrilled to see a newbie and did not miss a beat to take me under their tutelage. The first day was tough, as with any new skill, however, it was amazing how fast one can pick up the "stroke" after only a few consistent paddling practices. Today, I can confidently say that I have met some of my closest friends through dragon boating, not to mention the lasting relationships that I have made with my teammates. It's really the people that make this sport so AWESOME! If you are contemplating about coming out to practice, I highly encourage you to give it a shot! You will find people of all ages, skill levels and personalities. Some are fair weather paddlers (folks who come out during the summer) while others are hardcore winter paddlers- the solitude that comes with being the only boat on the water is something that is totally worth the experience! There is usually plenty of parking in the main lot just outside of Kenmore Air. Do not park in the gravel lot directly adjacent to the terminal unless you check with whoever is leading practice that day. Usually that lot is available during the winter when Kenmore Air shuts down earlier due to the lack of sunlight. If you need to use the restrooms, go up (north) along the parking lot to the nearest Starbucks where you'll find restrooms in the main lobby of the AGC building. Paddles & lifejackets will be provided on site. Additionally, you will need to sign a waiver if it's your first time, minimum age is 12 (guardian signature required for paddlers between 12 & 17 years ago). If you are interested in competing, the majority of the races take place during the summer and into the fall, however, occasionally you'll find opportunities outside that time period.
