It is rare to feel so welcomed somewhere that you have never been to. I left feeling as if John and I had been friends for years. I had come in specifically for the hot dogs and bacon. It was the end of the day and not much was left in the case. Which should have been disappointing but instead I found it exciting. A butcher that sells out of everything, shows me everything is fresh. If this place was in Brooklyn the lines would be down the street. I have waited on lines and paid much more for food that was subpar. Empire is authentic and everything I imagine old NY was like. In the end I left with hot dogs, bacon and a few brats. I couldn't wait to get home to cook it all. If you like a hot dog with a snap, you have to try these. They were the best hot dogs I have ever had. I don't think I can ever eat a packaged hot dog again. These dogs were complex but simply delicious. They were perfect. Store bought dogs are so salty. These were not. The brats were just as epic. Bacon will be cooked in the am. I can't wait to come back and try more!

I moved to Long Island in 2005 but still come into college point to pick the unique high quality meats that Empire Market offers. My most recent visit was yesterday and I bought 8 hand cut smoked pork chops. I prepared them tonight for dinner with my wife and our four children and it was a huge hit with all of them. The pork chops were tender, juicy, and delicious. No seasoning needed but I go old school and use mustard on the side. I recommend you stop by Empire Market you will not be disappointed and you will become a lifelong customer like me.

I love this supermarket. I rarely stop by here as it is out of my way to come here. But, when I do,…read moreI behave like a little girl in a candy shop. There are so many variation of food. This last time that I went, I got hard to find food products. I got frozen jute leaves for my Haitian friend. I got dried taro leaves for my Filipino co-worker. I myself got: bamboo leaves, frozen banana leaves, frozen bitter leaves, preserved duck eggs, fresh water chestnuts and tons of spices. I bought some meat from the butcher section and the guy sliced the meat up to my request. They have bones for soup. I saw durians, banana flowers, sorrel flowers, two types of bitter melons(the Asians and the Guyanese type), etc etc. They have Mexican products, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and of course Chinese products. There is a huge variety of products to make dishes from at least half of the world. It is a typical Chinese grocery store. The aisles are clean and stocked with a lot of items. For example, the noodle aisle is 1/4 full of all types and width of rice noodles. So for those gluten free people, they will think that they are in heaven. They have other types as well. At the time, I was interested in getting noodles to make a few bowls of pho...therefore the bones and meat for it. They also have mushroom oyster sauce for the gluten free people. I digress. Anyways, give this supermarket a try. Don't get deter by the fish market with fishy smell when you walk in. If I were the owner, I would have put the fish shop in the back. BUT, what's done is done. Enjoy!

I've honestly had Al Aqsa bookmarked for 1 reason only. Since I've let chicken, beef and pork go in…read morethe last 30+years, every once in a rare blue moon though, I get the itch to eat lamb. So I knew the Al Aqsa folks in the Parkchester area, wouldn't play around with their Halal lamb quality. I missed my calling though big time because I was pressed for time and couldn't wait in line- so picked some produce I needed instead. Al Aqsa has 2 entrances (I think?): one with some hard-to-find gorgeous fruit and veggies outside leading to more produce inside and several cashiers on right wall. Other entrance leads to another wing of the market. Meat dept. is further back and 'supermarket' aisles towards back left. I noticed Urad Dal flour, Chapati packages plus so much other stuff I'd use for my seafood (or non-seafood) dinners at home. The big space looks like it's been retrofitted in someway- but it works. Avoid rush hour and Saturday late mornings (from what I've seen)- because this place gets sardine packed man. But it's a good sign because the high turnover among produce items means you're getting a fresh batch every time. Lines to pay move rather quickly and Al Aqsa accepts cards. Because this place is a major hotspot, finding parking right up front doesn't always fall on your lap- so doing side streets is the best way to go. I look forward to returning.....and get my hands on my lamb. But between my ginger, fresh okra, 7 limes for $1.00, cilantro and a few other things- was a good $8 and change. So yeah...I'm digging these prices just fine- especially bulking up with their fresh fruits and veggies for my pressed juices at home.

The butcher section is small but the guys there are very helpful. I didn't see any chicken legs with the skin on so they cut some up for me. The size of the chicken is normal, much different from the brand name meat you would get from franchise supermarkets, which suggests to me that the chickens are raised in a healthier manner. The prices more than reasonable and I'm just happy to know of a place where I can go to accommodate everyone that I might want to cook for. Another note: though J didn't get any produce, their veggies, fruits and herbs were in excellent condition and you can tell there's a higher turnover rate with their products so you know what you're purchasing is fresh.

Richie's in Throggs Neck will save the day. Going to the butcher isn't a regular part of my everyday life- but hubs wanted a burger for dinner- and this was a better buy instead of my local supermarket. I almost felt odd about coming here as a Pescatarian (almost Vegan) in the first place- then hesitated at the same time with that first whiff of raw meat when you walk in. Folks are polite especially the gentleman taking care of my 3.49/lb. order of wings (only 3) and some cubed chuck meat I wanted ground up. Richie's has you covered with their meat assortment. I'm not sure how much of a nose to tail this butcher shop is- but from looks of it, who knows...it could be. Attention to quality is all here. An even $10 for just 3- but fresh wings and a pound of meat to grind was doable. When hubs finished his burger, he actually felt the meat had a nice and "beefy" flavor instead of the prepackaged stuff I always get at the supermarket.

The whole event was very organized (including before hand). As we moved around their building all the stations were set up, so there was little hanging around. My class was split into a few sections, after a little team bonding and shouts of "meat" we got going. Firstly a run through of the anatomy of animals and things to look out for or attributes that change taste, we even touched on a few ethical issues which were interesting. Secondly Jessica ran through food labeling which was very interesting, I consider myself pretty well educated on meat purchasing but learnt a few things (I didn't know to look out for 1000% grass fed vs grass fed). Finally we got into the butchery section, initially with a demo then an attempt ourselves. I definitely learnt a lot of techniques I could use and they helped you throughout. Overall the class was great fun, the instructors were very helpful and at the end I had a lot of delicious meat to take home. Highly recommended. Matt
