I love this supermarket. I rarely stop by here as it is out of my way to come here. But, when I do, I behave like a little girl in a candy shop. There are so many variation of food. This last time that I went, I got hard to find food products. I got frozen jute leaves for my Haitian friend. I got dried taro leaves for my Filipino co-worker. I myself got: bamboo leaves, frozen banana leaves, frozen bitter leaves, preserved duck eggs, fresh water chestnuts and tons of spices. I bought some meat from the butcher section and the guy sliced the meat up to my request. They have bones for soup. I saw durians, banana flowers, sorrel flowers, two types of bitter melons(the Asians and the Guyanese type), etc etc. They have Mexican products, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and of course Chinese products. There is a huge variety of products to make dishes from at least half of the world. It is a typical Chinese grocery store. The aisles are clean and stocked with a lot of items. For example, the noodle aisle is 1/4 full of all types and width of rice noodles. So for those gluten free people, they will think that they are in heaven. They have other types as well. At the time, I was interested in getting noodles to make a few bowls of pho...therefore the bones and meat for it. They also have mushroom oyster sauce for the gluten free people. I digress. Anyways, give this supermarket a try. Don't get deter by the fish market with fishy smell when you walk in. If I were the owner, I would have put the fish shop in the back. BUT, what's done is done. So this Chinese supermarket specializing in Asian items and also Central-American items ---- because a lot of their customers are Central-American immigrants ---- is 100% Chinese: all the staff are Chinese. They're not going to chit-chat with you about the latest news story in the New York Post. It's pure business: you walk in, if you want seafood that's still swimming in the tank, or, if you want fresh vegetables which aren't sold at Key Food, then, this place will pretty much have it. Other than that there's lots of Instant Ramen ---- from Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam ---- and lots of spices from both Asia and the Caribbean. And a "Goya" section too. Oh, Kimichi, did I mention Kimchi in glass jars? And yes, they do have basics ---- milk, eggs, cheese, meat, cat food. A great little addition to the Bronx, well worth a visit. These guys are greedy for money and rude as hell!! I went in to buy an item for under 5 dollars and they didn't take any credit/debit items for under 5 dollars or you had to have cash for that item. When I stated that all need is one item, they said "Well buy another thing then"! They way she said it was not customer satisfaction lingo. SEAFOOD This location has a nice variety of popular fresh seafood options. You may find the floor level holding tanks of live tilapia, lobster, etc. of interest to you. The frozen seafood has over 15 options, including octopus, squid, mussels, soft shell crab, crab legs, and more. This is the 1st place I had ever seen a BELTFISH! PROTEINS & MEATS The fresh meat area has a nice selection of pork, chicken, and beef. Here, you can find cow feet, pig feet, beef liver, and additional not so commonly requested proteins. The frozen meat area is where you may find black chicken, prepped ducks, and the like. Other proteins like beans, nuts, seeds, etc, are available in packaged or by weight. DAIRY PRODUCTS The dairy fridges have quail, duck, and of course chicken eggs. You can find popular brands of milk, including lactose free or fat- free options. This place has an amazing assortment of products. Along side the Chinese supermarket staples, they have a wide selection of Filipino and Vietnamese products, and an eclectic Pan-Central and South American collection of fresh produce and frozen goods. They also have a very abundant selection of Chino-Criollo sauces and spices in their dry foods shelves- impressive. They also have a huge selection of sauces from across Asia, so even if you are making American basics you can get the flavor you crave easily. Great pricing, and a larger dairy case than I have seen in most Asian markets. They also have a huge live and fresh seafood selection near the front and a big selection of meats in the side of the store. I do have to say that their vegetables & fruits were always fresh everyday of the week and the workers were always on point on pruning any wilting lettuce leaves or discarding decaying fruit. But lately, the quality of the fruits have changed. I've noticed some fruits that were going bad with obvious markings - would still be there the next following week. I've come and seen the same bananas browning bananas. I don't know what happened with the quality...but I hope it improves. SEAFOOD: Fish is a constant turn around so you'll get fresh fish all the time and even request to have it cut to your liking and scaled. I love coming for the red snapper - it's so good!! MILK: The milk goes bad EXACTLY on the date that it says it's going to expire. Even a couple days before it says it's going to expire, it starts to smell a little on the funky side. So I try to finish it DAYS before expiration. DRY AISLE: I love the fact that you can find a lot of hard to find items. I always like to get the Coconut Cookies and ingredients to make some bomb ass bubble tea or Vietnamese Pho. Be sure to check the food you buy in the dry aisle. I have actually noticed expiration dates rubbed off and re-stamped with a new date. I haven't really had any problems though. But, if you are unsure, skip it. SHOPPING TIME: The best time to come is on Sunday. The bad side is you are fighting with the church goers that are all shopping at the same time after church, so come EARLY and beat that rush hour. The freshest delivery arrive on the weekend. If you shop on Monday, most of the good stuff is already gone, but you may be lucky to find a few here and there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ultimately, I come here for the good prices and fresh veggies/fruits and seafood. Everything else, I shop somewhere else. The service is fast and okay. But don't expect any perky conversations with your cashier or even a pleasant "hello" - it's just straight to point...pay...and...leave. If you come frequently, don't forget your coupon rewards. I really wanted a frozen goat head and some spices, but on Christmas eve, we had more pressing matters to take care of. Very random location for an asian grocery store, but easily accessible from Parkchester and Castle Hill subway stops. Happy to find pork belly with plenty of meat still attached, marrow bones for $1.25 per bag, thin sliced short ribs, and lots of dumplings. Seafood and meats are super fresh, with live crabs, lobster, and fish. Prices for seafood and produce are about half of what they're charging in Manhattan, even in Chinatown!! Between that and the headache-inducing flickery fluorescent lights, i'd give this place one, maybe two stars. But they get a solid three for the wide range of hard-to-find foods they carry, and for their expansive produce section. It competes with PathMark for produce quality, but they have some obscure fruits and veggies that you just can't find at mainstream stores. Every item is fresh and they also have a LARGE fish selection that come in everyday! Everything from Crab and Lobster to Red Snapper. Try finding that at your local Path-mark, Stop and Shop or even BJs, Sam's Club or Fairway outlets. They also carry a vast inventory of what I would call "Hard to find Asian items like Won-Ton wrappers, Tofu and various seasonings. I then looked up some recipes online and decided to throw on a pair of cruddy jeans and a cruddy sweatshirt and tie my hair into an icky ponytail and run to this market. When I got inside the sketchy looking door, I was slightly blinded by the...purple (?) fluorescent lights flickering. But then, I wandered the aisles and explored the fresh and exotic produce. Durian? What's a Durian? D: I picked up some ingredients including rice noodles, fish sauce, coconut milk, fresh basil and one jalapeno for only FOUR DOLLARS. Yes, you read that right: Four Dollars. Great place to get practically all the almost impossible to find ingredients for most Asian fare. Nice produce selection of particularly ethnic varieties; inspiring for a home chef who loves to dabble with Thai & Vietnamese cuisine... The noodle selection is huge and every chili paste, powder, fish sauce, etc.. you may need is there. I need to check out the dried mushroom selection... Read the labels... a lot of products contain MSG...some do not; you may have to dig around but you'll probably hit paydirt. The fish looks pretty good, but I'd rather go to Randazzo's on Arthur Ave; however, they do carry some funky fish very particular to Asian cuisine that you'll never find in the Italian market. The meat...well, I'm suspect. Not sure of the grading and the quality is dubious...but if you need something like beef tendon for making Pho this is the place to get it. They carry all the "odd" ingredients most western markets wouldn't dream of selling. So, I give the joint 4 stars because they have almost everything you need to put together authentic asian dishes... Know what you're doing in regards to the purchasing fish & meat. Enjoy! read more

i dunno, the freshness of the produce lately has been disappointing. For months, the carrots haven't tasted like carrots- no sweetness, no nothing. Same with the broccoli. I'm happy I finally started shopping at this place. I've been a Parkchester resident since 2008 and had not set foot into Chang Li until this past summer, a good 3 years later. Better late than never, I guess. All I can say is that I love this place. The prices are fantastic and there is a large variety to choose from in every section. I never knew there were so many varieties of bok choy until I saw them here. You can get almost anything here. I say almost because I needed some canned San Marzano tomatoes earlier but they didn't have any here. I had to go elsewhere but that's fine by me. Great place. I live two blocks away from Chang Li. Chang Li used to be such of a wonderful supermarket. Chang Li used to offer competitive pricing and fresh produces - until about a couple of years ago. Their quality and service has been in a gradual decline for years. Produce 1/5 As denoted by other reviewers, freshness of fruits and vegetables have degraded so much that I can no longer shop fruits or vegetables here. As lazy as I am, I am forced to go back to Flushing or Chinatown to get my fruits and vegetable now. Chang Li has jacked up their price all the while freshness of the products have degraded. I don't mind paying for fresh good, but I would not pay more for less quality. Their scallion, for instance. It used to be $1 for 3 for many years, just like it is at most produce markets in Flushing and Chinatown. Now they charge up to 79 cents each bundle. Their spinach is so old they're actually rotting on the display. This place needs a serious inspection to say the least. Ceiling has a leaky spots where disgusting orange droplets of water drop over the vegetable. They don't even bother to fix this for a whole week, and when they finally do something, it's a tiny bucket RIGHT NEXT TO sweet potatoes. They STILL sold sweet potatoes with molds growing on them because of the droplets that dropped over them. That's just gross. Fruits 1/5 Nectarines would be on display for more than weeks, while plums would get worse and worse day after day. If they actually gave a shit about the fruits, they would remove ones in bad conditions - I would have to flip through dozen or so to find one acceptable item in fruit section. Persimmons are overpriced (1 for $1? Please, I can buy a box of 24 for $14 - their cheaper 3 for $2 have bruises and bumps on every single one of them). It's very difficult to find berries without molds growing on them. Dragonfruits are just an eyesore. They're overpriced and I see no one buying them - they get withered and dried, and they just sit there for weeks. Meat 1/5 Butcher shop here is just nasty. I asked the butcher where they get their meat and they are clueless. All meats ranging from chicken, pork, to beef has distinct chemical odor that cannot be washed off. Even when I cooked the meat, I can still taste this foul odor. Lucky for me, I found 'Sterling Meat Market' just two blocks away from Chang Li to be my new excellent source of butchered goods (they have goat, lamb, pork, and beef, all in grill quality - not to mention that butchers actually know their meat in and out, and they refuse to sell bad meats.) Fish 3/5 This is probably the only reason I still go here. Their shrimps and scallops are in good condition 2-3 days out of 5 days. Their striped bass is usually okay, and red snappers and mackerels have pretty good rotation. They clean the fish pretty well. They used to sell crabs by the entrance, though, and I had some bad crabs that gave me the runs for days. Also, their salmon is average at best. Service 1/5 There's this old lady cashier who wears glasses - she dropped my packaged Korean pear twice (they come in package of 3 with plastic packaging, because they can be damaged very easily). Other cashiers are okay, but she rough handled my fruits that they were broken or heavily bruised. I gave her a look, but she brushed me off as if she has done nothing wrong. I even refused to buy it several times, and I just decided it's best to avoid her cashier lane all together. It's a huge disappointment - this could have been the one super market that offers it all, but instead, with a rapid growth and expansion, they've neglected their customers' needs. I spend about 250 bucks in meat and 150 bucks in fruits and vegetable a month. That could have been spent @ Chang Li, but I had to find other venues to meet my needs due to their poor quality and service. If their fish market gets any worse than what they are now, I will stop going there altogether. read more

I typically don't come to asian markets for their cleanliness, this one especially was a bit concerning to me. frozen fish just laying totally unwrapped in the freezer, people putting raw fish just in their baskets and some dude just butchering whole chickens in the open of the store. all I could imagine was chicken juice splattering around me. additionally I didn't really find like they had that many items for example they only had three varieties of mushrooms and no really prepared items (like spring rolls, pickles etc) their overall produce section wasn't as diverse as I expected. instead of leaving empty-handed I decided to grab some ice cream before I left. to my horror at check out it turned out to be 11.99 it was not marked in the freezer so let's just say I hope it's good and I probably won't be returning read more

My favorite super market in the bronx . The seafood people are always on point. The meat market people are lazy at times. I don't like the fact that they use the same tools to cut all their meats. The meat is very cheap you just have to move stuff around to find a pocket friendly price.the bathroom is nasty but I guess thats normal since there's alot of men that work there.
