Every time we come to this butcher, they either don't have what we need or struggle to understand what we want. I went to buy a turkey for thanksgiving. The recipe I'm using calls for the bird to be spatchcocked. I had to Google this, but figured it would be easier to have a butcher do it then attempt it myself. Apparently not. I googled photos, I googled the definition so they could read on my phone. Spatchcock it is removing the spine and splitting the turkey along the back so it lays flat. They split it down the breastbone. I didn't realize until I got home and took it out to start my brine. Also, they asked if I wanted the wings removed for gravy. I said "just the wing tips" - they removed the entire wings. Also didn't realize until I got home. I paid $35 for a hacked up turkey not to my specifications. Go somewhere else or butcher the turkey yourself, these guys are a joke. read more

Went back this past weekend and picked up a giant piece of pork butt! 8 lbs for about $20 that fed 10 people! You can't go wrong... They even cleaned it and deboned it for me (and wrapped up the bone separately so that I can use it later when making rice + beans). I also picked up 10lbs of ground beef and 10 lbs of ground pork that I asked them to mix together (I was making meatloaf). So what did they do? They grabbed chunks of beef and pork, and took it to the grinder to ground them up fresh for me. Had a nice chat with the guys behind the counter again. I LOVE THEM! And those pork skewers are amazing (and only $1 each!). 2-3 can feed someone for dinner. For serious. A $3 dinner for juicy seasoned pork skewers! I'll be back this weekend. This place makes me want to cook more! PS - I asked when they'll start accepting credit cards. Apparently the "no credit cards temporarily" sign has been up for 5 years and they don't expect the sign to come down any time soon! read more

The absolute worst customer service experience of my entire life. I usually go to international meat market a few blocks up (amazing, I recommend), but they were closed. My boyfriend and I stopped in to get some steaks. There was a simple misunderstanding as two workers cut steaks for us. We tried to explain that someone had already cut us steak but the second guy didn't listen and just cut away. When they both realized they became severely angry, almost explosive. As we walked out, after having already paid for our steaks, we heard the workers calling us "stupid people." We also witnessed the main butcher (older man with white hair) scream at a mother and her young child. She was unsure of what she wanted so he became frustrated. She left, good for her! I will NEVER go back again and have already advised my local friends to make sure they never give them any business. What an evil, disgusting, and unsanitary establishment. read more

This place sucks. Went there today for some stew meat, and the butcher tried to convince us to spend much more for a steak piece of meat. This has happened before. Also, it's dirty -- the knives behind the counter have blood and meat residue on them. Not that hard to clean, and very unsanitary. It's worth it to walk the extra few blocks to another butcher. read more

The one really negative thing I have to mention is the Lamb Carcass in the window. I mean, are you trying to scare people away? In any case, the meat here is amazing. I bought two New York strip steaks here yesterday that were probably the best I've had outside of a restaurant (with the possible exception of the dry aged steak at whole foods which are tres expensive). The steaks weren't too pricey at all and they were delicious. Minus one star for not having chicken feet. I mean you are selling chicken at a butcher shop, what are you doing with the feet? I probably wouldn't have taken a whole star off for this, but, oddly enough, the guy behind me was looking for the same thing. He left without buying anything. read more

I was really excited to make curried goat this weekend, and went into this place after seeing good reviews and passing by for years. I asked if they had goat, and the butcher quickly cut up my requested 2lbs. I didn't see where he had had grabbed it from in the case, and couldn't find a tag that said goat, so when he handed me my package I asked where it was in the case. He showed me and the sign clearly said Lamb. I asked him if it was lamb or goat, and he told me "it's the same thing". It's not. I asked again, saying it was fine either way - but did he give me lamb or goat, and he told me "goat". It was 100% lamb. I will not return to a place that blatantly lies to it's customers - this was very disappointing. read more

I came here last week to purchase 4 rack of lamb and the prices wasn't too bad. I was shopping around earlier and look at a different meat shop that were selling 4 piece of lamb for $28.....so when i came here, it was only for $18 so I grab it and came home and clean the lamb for myself. I hate giving out bad reviews but I've NEVER had food poisoning like I did after eating some ground beef from this place. 36 hours of hell. My girlfriend and I made burgers a few hours after our purchase. We were nauseous within two hours, and incapacitated within four. If you and I have met, you know I love butchers shops. When I used to have a blog, I blogged about the butcher shop on Broadway (which is missing from yelp for some reason.) Now that I live off the 30th Ave stop Akropolis has become my go to butcher. Prices are reasonable, the facility is reasonably clean (care is taken to make sure it is clean), and the variety makes me smile. I'm with Angela G., this place makes me happy. Also, if you and I have met, you also know I enjoy making broth and stock. I'm an exciting guy. Asking for pork bones can go one of three ways, either a) shock, horror and vague annoyance ensues b) understanding and acceptance sets in but pork bones are unavailable or c) your benefactor understands what you want, and has bones to sell you. Akropolis takes choice c. Do the math people, beef and pork broth adds up, and bones are only $1 a pound :-). read more

They have the worst calf liver !!! NOT NOT NOT fresh at all , I don't know about other stuff, but I have been to this place 3 times to buy calf liver and each time they gave me something that looked like it was in the garbage before. You cannot see what they cutting for you , because they kind of hide behind the counter. I am never going back to this place. Hope this will help somebody. read more

Stuck in time, about 30 years ago - staff, meat selection and customer service. The store is outdated, dark and dingy. The meat selection is sub par. They didn't have filet mignon, cornish hen or much else besides ur chuck, tbone, kebabs and regular chicken. I can't beleive all these people giving 5 star reviews, calling it the best? I come here often to buy the strangest thing they've heard of yet...bone meal/bone dust to feed to my dog who is on a raw meat diet. Although I got funny looks at first, they offered it to me for free and I have been going back every month to pick up more. The fact that this market has made every effort to try to help me get this offbeat item is amazing, and I am very grateful for that. When they are not in a busy season, I have had an employee be nice enough to save up the bone meal for me and store in the fridge until I can pick it up. i came here specifically because a previous reviewer mentioned you could get pork bones here. upon asking for it, they gave me a blank stare and a shrug. i also asked for fatback and pork cheeks which they also did not have. i cannot speak for the quality of meat but i went to another butcher shop 2 blocks down and the meat quality and set up of the butcher shop was nearly identical. point being, this was not the specialty butcher shop that i was hoping it would be. it seems to be a basic, neighborhood butcher that you could find anywhere. read more

I don't get this place. Right before Thanksgiving they were selling defrosted (previously frozen) Shady Brook turkeys in their packaging instead of fresh turkey. To add insult to injury, they were charging more than 2 1/2 times what the Key Food down the street was for the identical turkeys! Really? I can't imagine anyone being that stupid. read more

this butcher shop in astoria is one of many in the area and it's just as good as the other ones . it's on 30th ave right by the elevated train tracks and minutes near the rfk bridge. always crowded so if you can find meter street parking do it. this butcher shop inside is small and compact with 3 glass counters displaying the assorted beef, pork , lamb , etc. the window display does grab your attention with gutted pigs, lambs and other meats hanging upside down for viewing by customers and folks passing by , for me it always makes me look away . inside as i walk around and see what's available the workers behind the counter cutting up meats on the butcher blocks for us customers. it's a greek butcher shop so lamb is big here so my order is gyro meat and some greek sausages that the gentleman recommend is very good along with some prepacked chicken cutlet for 25 bucks and it's a done deal . a simple clean place with a friendly staff with prices that are more then fair , i will be back when i am in the area to do some more shopping in astoria . opa. read more
