By 1874, Glenwood was a recreational destination. A mule-drawn street railway operated on Washington Road, conveying people to Glenwood for weekend and holiday visits. Glenwood differs from most urban cemeteries of that time that had a grid pattern. Glenwood has meandering roads and trails and is beautifully landscaped. This historic cemetery is the final resting place of a number of individuals who were citizens of the short-lived Republic of Texas as well as famous citizens of Houston, Harris County and the state of Texas. One of the most famous buried here is Howard Hughes. The cemetery is a fun place to walk or bike ride, it's very shady so quite nice, even in summer. I was there as the new year came and enjoyed seeing many beautiful monuments.

Before walking in the chapel is a large mirror. Inside of the chapel is a wall of mirrors. I guess you can check yourself in the entrance to make sure your clothes or hair is straight, but all of the others were a bit much for me. It may be wonderful for others, but a bit much for me.

The way he talked with us and dealt with us is worthy of applause. I had only one bad experience. I was called by Mrs Robinson, from his office, to give me information about the Death Certificates. She was not courteous in her talking and seemed frustrated as she was getting information from me. I pray that she will change and no one else has to be talked to in that way. This cemetery was Houston's first official cemetery, and was originally known as just "City…read moreCemetery" when it was founded in 1836. It served as Houston's only cemetery until 1840, when it began to get too full. It is quite surreal to stumble upon this historical gem, because despite the significance, it appears relatively forgotten-looking. These days, the City of Houston has designated it a city park, and so it is managed through the Houston Parks & Recreation Department, but it's obviously not one of their first priorities. Just west of Downtown in Fourth Ward, the area offers only street parking, but it seems plentiful enough. You'll find the entrance gates located right at the corner of West Dallas Street and Valentine Street with the large green sign affixed to the old brick gate structure marking the cemetery. This place is chock full of the tombs of Houston's early important figures, but most notably it is the resting place of John Kirby Allen. In case you're not aware, this is Houston's co-founder. However, this place is not just historically significant for Houston, but for Texas in general. Everywhere you turn, you'll find veterans of the Texas Revolution who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. The mother of Mirabeau Lamar, the second President of the Republic of Texas, Rebecca Lamar is buried here as well. I encourage you to walk around here with your smartphone and do your research if you're a local history fan. If you wander around here, you'll notice some stones that simply have "Unknown" etched on them, and I'm guessing this means that the identity of the grave owner is unknown. You'll also find smashed and broken tombstones in random areas throughout the place. While walking, I came upon one mostly buried, and attempted to clean the mud off before realizing that this thing was buried pretty heavily. The public are free to come and go during park hours. However, be careful if you are visiting this cemetery near dusk, because the Urban Park Rangers do not necessarily do a thorough check before locking up for the night. After all, this place doesn't get many visitors. While checking out this place one time, a Park Ranger nearly locked me in, and if I hadn't heard the clanking of the chain from my location across the cemetery and yelled out, I probably would've had to resort to jumping the gate.
