Biggest Mistake of my life!
Attending CollegeAmerica was the biggest mistake of my life. I say that honestly and whole heartedly. Thee biggest mistake of my life. A friend of mine said that her brother-in-law (whom dropped out as well) went to that school in hopes of achieving a bachelor's degree in business so I immediately was interested because I was eager to get into the work force and utilize my education. First, I had to go to school obviously.
I called the school and made an appointment with a woman that said she would explain to me what they offered and what their procedure was for enrollment. When I got there she interviewed me and asked me several questions regarding my income and previous school experience. She called me a few days later and told me "... the dean was apprehensive about accepting you because they want to make sure that you're going to be dedicated. I managed to convince them that I thought you would be a great student."
I started classes and everything well "OK" for the first few months when all of the sudden I was noticing little things around me that didn't make sense. Instructors having to purchase materials out of their own money to teach the class (and expressing their frustration with the class), I noticed that in the entire building with all of the students that attended, there was 1 dedicated printer that wasn't very reliable. On several occasions I was asked to ask for permission to use the admin dept.'s printer to print my homework. I had to go into one of the administrative staff member's office and ask if I could take over their computer long enough to print my homework.
After noticing that I may have not made the best decision when it came to picking my school, it started to get worse. Altercations between students and staff were becoming more and more common. I see people being escorted out of the building due to frustration and aggression. I started noticing that there weren't enough books for the school. At one point the school just started printing entire chapters out of books due to lack of supplies. (School provides books, or... xerox copies of books if need be)
An instructor by the first name of Vanessa one day had quit because she was fed up with the school's practices. I remember her frustrations were the same as the students'. Myself and 2 other students spoke to the dean and expressed our frustrations with the way the situation between the admin and the instructor was handled and we were asked not to talk about the situation with other students.
Realizing that this college was a bad decision I decided to discontinue my education there temporarily. After the financial aid dept called and explained how close I was to finishing (I wasn't close) I decided to give it another shot. Upon my return this 300lbs balding gentlemen presented himself to me as "The Dean of the business department." He said to me, verbatim, "I want to make sure that if we accept you back that you're not going to leave again, (later I realized it was because it was detrimental to their status as a "good" college) because I'm putting my foot down on some of the things going on around here... There's a new Sheriff in town!" I decided not to attend again because I just felt I didn't want to continue the bad decision.
The financial aid department hardly ever answers the phone, she rarely calls you back and when you do speak to somebody, in person or over the phone, they have to "figure it out and call you back." Answers to them are not readily available because it would seem that the person administrating that department is not able to make sense of situations herself. She composes an explanation that is so elaborate that it makes you not even want to deal with it.
Allow me to put myself on "blast"
I went to school there for collectively about two years. After finding out that if I didn't finish the degree I was still going to owe the school tuition for classes that I had yet to take (a fee) I decided to downgrade my major from a BA in business to an AA in E-Business. I took a couple of "mod's" in classes and couldn't stand the yelling in the halls, the lack of supplies, the instructors fighting with students. I discontinued my education and still ended up with a bill of $40,000.00 even after (let me repeat) even after, the free money I got as PAL grants. I have no AA degree, I have no BA degree. I was told "if you returned to finish either degree, we would have to charge you more"
I thought about filing for bankruptcy but school loans are not applicable to that solution.
The computer instructor knew he was going to quit and when i should have gotten a high C in the class, I got an A+ because we grew a friendship and he was quitting anyway. read more
