About as comfortable as a dentist visit can be!…read more A little background here...up until my appointment with Dr. Nickou I had not been to the dentist in 8 years after a few bad experiences with 2 different dentists. GROSS I know but once you've had a bad experience (let alone two) you NEVER want to go back to another dentist. After some pushing by my wife I made my appointment at Dr. Nickou's office and I'm glad I did. The staff at Charles Nickou's office is great. Making the appointment was easy and there wasn't a long waiting period. I originally made an appointment for one month down the road but got a call one week after making the appointment for an appointment that opened in two days. So I went to the dentist early. When I got in the door everyone was very nice to me. They asked why I hadn't been to the dentist in so long to get some background and then they took me back to the dreaded chair... ...The chair was way more comfortable than I had remembered it because the hygienist made me feel very comfortable. She was very good and very quick. I had my x-rays and my cleaning done in 30 minutes. After the cleaning Dr. Nickou came in to go over my x-rays and it turned out I had one cavity (my first cavity ever). He explained what he wanted to do and was ridiculously nice. He had me make another appointment to come back and get a filling. A few weeks later I was back at the office to get my filling and I'll admit I was pretty nervous to get the filling. The whole procedure was done in 15 min though and was not really uncomfortable at all. They have pictures on the ceiling of beaches and snow capped mountains etc. I thought it was a nice touch. Dr. Nickou also continually checked with me to make sure everything was OK. If you've had a bad experience in the past like me and you're delaying going to a different dentist because you think "you can't trust someone that puts their hands in your mouth" believe me, if you go see Dr. Nickou he'll take good care of you. The office is clean and the staff is great...it really is as comfortable as a dentist appointment can get.

I don't even know where to begin, but let me tell you--I hadn't pursued dental care since my late teens (I'm now in my mid-50s) due to a crippling dental fear that made me endure pain rather than visit a provider. At my wit's end, I searched for a dental office that could accommodate my phobia. I happened upon Artisan Dentistry and booked my consultation. I was visibly shaking and dizzy (literally!) with fear as I made my way to his practice and chair. (The office is beautifully and calmly decorated, and his staff is wonderfully trained to deal with us "chickens.") Dr. Mathew immediately greeted me warmly and asked me to talk about myself and my history. He has wonderful bedside manner and is quite gregarious--he genuinely enjoys a good chat. We just talked for about half an hour to an hour, and together we decided to take some careful steps forward. I asked about full sedation, and he was completely open to it and any options I wanted to pursue. I could call the shots at any time and switch sedation plans. He gently suggested that I start with a few teeth cleaning sessions using topical anesthetics and Novocain as needed, guaranteeing that I wouldn't feel anything. I went in for my cleanings, and it was exactly as he described--I didn't feel a thing! Here was the turning point: I asked him point-blank, "So I had some Novocain during my cleanings--is that what you would use if we didn't do sedation dentistry?" "Yes," he said, "the same type of pain management for each part of your mouth that I work on." I said, "You know what? Let's try it." That decision changed everything! For all the massive work that was done, I wasn't sedated in any way! Let me tell you, I've had major work done, and his priority was always pain management. Dr. Mathew literally changed my life by showing me "here is what a medical professional can be." Since being under his care, I no longer fear having minor medical procedures done in other doctors' offices. It turns out my epic teeth issues were only symptoms of the real problem: my fear of dentists (and medical professionals), the perceived loss of control, and procedures that were unknown to me. Yes, Dr. Mathew is at the top of his technical dental game--this is obvious (he loves to talk about the many seminars and practicals he still attends and the new things he's learned)--but for me? His ability to help people like me overcome life-long fear-based obstacles. He removed (extracted, lol?) my fundamental fear. I can't say it any clearer than that. He has done nothing short of changing my life. Oh, and as for my new dental work? The best compliment I get is how nice my teeth look and that I must be hawkish about brushing. They look completely natural, which has changed my face and definitely my smile. And as for being hawkish about brushing? Ha--well, I am now! Thank you, Dr. Mathew and Jaime. You have a friend for life. With all my love and gratitude--CK

I called to ensure my insurance was in-network and my upcoming appointment would be covered (as it switched with the new year) and it was confirmed over the phone. I offered to provide my card number over the phone for an extra confirmation and was told it was not needed, they accepted the insurance and it was in-network. I arrive to my appointment, work was completed then AFTER work is done, the front desk tells me that they don't accept the insurance, it is out of network and they didn't know that until seeing the card (which I provided before heading into the room for my filling) and that my total due TODAY was just under $200. I explained that I specifically called for confirmation ahead of time and they told me there was nothing they could do until they saw the card, and my total balance was due because I was out of network. Without any other choice, I paid the charge and followed up with the office to let them know about my frustrating experience - Jessi was very responsive which is appreciated but not very helpful. I was then told that it was a patient responsibility to also call the insurance company to confirm, which I is totally reasonable, but I didn't think it was necessary since the office had ALREADY confirmed it was accepted, and they never mentioned 'hey you might also want to call insurance to double-check'. Understood the work was completed I paid for it, but this is trickery and bad business practice. Not how you want to be treated as a patient. It would have gone a long way if the office accepted their behavior as not ideal, and made amends to meet in the middle somewhere, but nope just said it was my responsibility. This was the final straw for me. I also had been rescheduled from a 2022 appointment that had been in the books for months and pushed into 2023 since the office was closed, had to ask more than once for follow up on quoted services, office is dingy, communication is poor.
