I've had the absolute pleasure of completing a total dental restoration project in the care of the wonderful Dr. Paul Mathew and his incredible team at Artisan Dentistry. I don't even know where to begin, but let me tell you--I hadn't pursued dental care since my late teens (I'm now in my mid-50s) due to a crippling dental fear that made me endure pain rather than visit a provider. At my wit's end, I searched for a dental office that could accommodate my phobia. I happened upon Artisan Dentistry and booked my consultation. I was visibly shaking and dizzy (literally!) with fear as I made my way to his practice and chair. (The office is beautifully and calmly decorated, and his staff is wonderfully trained to deal with us "chickens.") Dr. Mathew immediately greeted me warmly and asked me to talk about myself and my history. He has wonderful bedside manner and is quite gregarious--he genuinely enjoys a good chat. We just talked for about half an hour to an hour, and together we decided to take some careful steps forward. I asked about full sedation, and he was completely open to it and any options I wanted to pursue. I could call the shots at any time and switch sedation plans. He gently suggested that I start with a few teeth cleaning sessions using topical anesthetics and Novocain as needed, guaranteeing that I wouldn't feel anything. I went in for my cleanings, and it was exactly as he described--I didn't feel a thing! Here was the turning point: I asked him point-blank, "So I had some Novocain during my cleanings--is that what you would use if we didn't do sedation dentistry?" "Yes," he said, "the same type of pain management for each part of your mouth that I work on." I said, "You know what? Let's try it." That decision changed everything! For all the massive work that was done, I wasn't sedated in any way! Let me tell you, I've had major work done, and his priority was always pain management. Dr. Mathew literally changed my life by showing me "here is what a medical professional can be." Since being under his care, I no longer fear having minor medical procedures done in other doctors' offices. It turns out my epic teeth issues were only symptoms of the real problem: my fear of dentists (and medical professionals), the perceived loss of control, and procedures that were unknown to me. Yes, Dr. Mathew is at the top of his technical dental game--this is obvious (he loves to talk about the many seminars and practicals he still attends and the new things he's learned)--but for me? His ability to help people like me overcome life-long fear-based obstacles. He removed (extracted, lol?) my fundamental fear. I can't say it any clearer than that. He has done nothing short of changing my life. Oh, and as for my new dental work? The best compliment I get is how nice my teeth look and that I must be hawkish about brushing. I have been coming to Artisan for over 7 years. Great staff! Dr. Mathews is very attentive, friendly and professional. I had several issues with my teeth prior to finding Artisan through to misdiagnosis at another practice. Dr. Mathews set up a care plan that rectified the issues I had. It was all taken care of in a timely manner and my out of pocket expense was affordable. Samantha has been the same hygienist to clean my teeth for the entire time I have been a patient. Dr Paul Mathew and his team are the BEST!! I started going to him about 10 years ago. I was petrified going to the dentist (I mean white knuckles petrified). From the first time I met Dr Mathew, he assured me no need to be afraid, if I felt any discomfort let him know; if I needed a break, let him know. I have had everything from fillings, crowns, and root canals. Samantha does my cleanings (AMAZING) so thorough, gentle, and caring. Jill (does it all) but has been such a great help answering any and all billing questions, makes everyone feel so welcome from the time you walk in the door until you check out (so professional and caring). Just had my 3 month regular cleaning today. I have very high anxiety and fear from childhood but Samantha took all that away before she started the procedure. She is amazing at her profession and as a person who cares about my needs. So calming during the procedure that we talked about Christmas decorations that I didn't even get nervous and then it was done. THIS DENTIST IS A SCAMMER (or an idiot) I have been going to the same dentist for years, but I recently moved to Salem and the drive was just too long. I have excellent luck with my teeth and have only had 2 cavities ever. I also brush twice a day with a Sonicare, so they are very well taken care of. I do, however, have coffee stains on my molars that are pretty dark, but my dentist always assured me they were only stains I went to this dentist and he told me I had SEVEN(!!!!) cavities. He even took pictures of my previously mentioned coffee stains to 'prove' it. I was horrified that my old dentist might have been wrong, and even with my insurance it was going to cost $800 to fill them. I went to a third dentist to see if this was really true, and he barely had to look in my mouth to tell me they were just stains and that I didn't have a single cavity. He did a thorough exam and said I had great teeth. As far as the "kind & caring" aspect, I am one of those people who HATES the dentist. I chose Artisan because they were supposed to be super helpful with that regard. Honestly, I didn't find them to be any different than any other dentist I've been to. Also, the dentist kind of smelled bad. Ick. The cleaning was also really painful. So painful that I had to go home and take Motrin, and I couldn't eat solid food for lunch. I bled, a lot. I was actually squirming away from the girl while she stabbed me. This is very unusual for my teeth. And the final thing that really made me angry: they asked me to come in 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork, which is typical. However, when I got there 15 minutes early, what they really wanted me to fill out was a marketing questionnaire. Every question was along the lines of "which of the following incentives would convince you to come get your teeth whitened" I thought it was incredibly disrespectful, because I had to leave work early and lose pay just to help them make money. They didn't even go over the usual medical history paperwork until my appointment time, and then they did it in person. I will admit it was kind of nice to go over it in person just once though. read more

Have been going to this practice for several years now and have never had a problem. I've had extensive work done including extractions and root canals. Should be known that I am a huge weenie when it comes to the Dentist and I feel so at home there. They are accommodating enough to even let my baby sit in my arms while getting a cleaning. First visit he told me a needed a full mouth scaling at over $1000.00 which would take anhour to be done by the hygenist. I declined , I was very uncomfortable with the way things are done in the office. Went to another dentist for a second opinion was assured I only needed scaling on my back teeth. Price under $200.00.
