To establish my credentials as a liquor store critic, please know I was basically raised in the international league of bad decisions. I grew up between the Middle East and Europe, which means by now I've bought alcohol in enough suspicious places to qualify for a documentary. I've survived liquor stores in random Arab countries, sketchy neighborhoods in Paris, and enough gas station adjacent bottle shops across America to know good service when I see it. I'm not technically middle aged, but spiritually I am a divorced 47 year old man named Greg who just wants a decent bottle of red and one pleasant human interaction. I've been coming here for a hot minute, and honestly most of the staff are absolute gems. The whole crew is usually warm and kind, especially the Indian folks whose names I shamefully never remember, and Jamie, and the tall queer glass of water man(slay queen) .Truly a beacon of customer service. But recently, management seems to be conducting a fascinating social experiment. They hired a woman whose entire customer service style feels like she lost a bet. She's not aggressively rude, which almost makes it worse. It's this deeply unsettling, passive borderline hostile vibe where she asks, "Do you happen to have your ID?" with the energy of someone accusing me of tax fraud, while I am already halfway through opening my wallet like a man presenting classified documents. Please. I carry three forms of ID, like I'm prepared for international travel, jury duty, and a background check(i really do carry more than one ID). No smile. No hello. No tiny shred of human warmth. Just the expression of someone who has seen the end of joy and wants me to see it too. Every interaction feels like I personally interrupted her from doing something vastly more important, like staring at a wall. It's happened three or fours times now, which officially makes it a pattern and not just "maybe she's having a bad day." At this point, walking in and seeing her behind the register feels like accidentally selecting hard mode on a video game I never agreed to play. Or like exposure therapy designed by someone who hate me, and forced me to it by a court order. Today I genuinely almost turned around and left when I saw her. Luckily Jamie appeared like a customer service guardian angel and saved the day yet again. If she's working next time, I'm turning around so fast the door chime will think it hallucinated me. Shopping here when she's on shift feels less like buying liquor and more like volunteering for an emotional hostage situation. Update4/16/2026: In a shocking and deeply satisfying plot twist, management actually fixed the problem. I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but whatever it was deserves a case study and possibly a small award. The vibes have been restored. Balance has returned to the universe. I can once again purchase alcohol without feeling like I'm being psychologically evaluated. Major credit to the management team for clearly paying attention and taking action. That alone puts this place in the top tier of liquor stores I've emotionally survived. Jimmy and jamie should run the country with this quick action and response. WOW Still a loyal customer. This place was packed with boxes and a little crowded with extra stock but the positive side is that they have a great selection. The guys working were all sorts of personable and very willing to help us find anything we were looking for. They even had us taste stuff to make sure we liked it before purchasing. Great customer service. They had some excellent craft beers but the beer selection was a bit small. More for just picking up some bombers or other single bottles. You won't find a case of Bud Light here for the non-good beer drinkers so you'll need to go elsewhere for that. read more

These guys told me repeatedly; check socials, leave phone number, email, buy store picks and you be entered in a drawing for allocated stuff. After thousands of dollars spent, they never call. I stop in at least once per week to see what they have. Now when I come in and see good stuff behind the counter - they tell me I can't buy it. So regardless of what they say, they don't care about who comes in the store. Only in a sale. I have committed to them but they are not committed to me. I'm out. I can order online and I don't have to listen to their bantha fodder. No truths were spoken by these people. read more

Many business are doing their best during COVID, but NOT this one. No way. WORST service I've ever received. The sexist man REFUSED to give us service and told my perfectly sober friend and I that we were unwelcome in the store. Furthermore, after being nothing but kind and respectful, he continued to antagonize. He said that he would have granted service if I "checked my tone and attitude." Which, I might should add, was nonexistent. I understand having a bad day, but treating a human like that will run your business to the ground. I will never go back. read more

So disappointed in this place. I've been here 7-8 times for wine and liquor purchases with my boyfriend since they opened. We are both in our 30s. Today I went to buy a bottle of wine, prosecco and hard kombucha. I put the wine on the counter and my boyfriend put the rest on the counter. The cashier asked me for my ID even though I wasn't the one making the purchase. He then proceeded to stop my boyfriends purchase (even though he had his ID) because I didn't have mine! I've NEVER had this happen to me before. Also - the cashier did not card both persons in front of us even though they BOTH put alcohol on the counter. I understand the laws here but to not do this to the couple in front of us and then do it us was uncalled for. Then to be rude on top of it was not cool. We left without buying anything. We won't be back and we will no longer recommend this store to our friends in the neighborhood. read more

I will recommend this place to anyone looking to buy decent wine at a low price. It's not located in a swanky part of town; actually I usually only go when it's light out. The guys here are great though. They have wine choices--get this--3 for $10, 3 for $15, and 3 for $21! Most of the selections, even in the 3 for $10, are really good too! A lot of the cheaper bottles are new wines that haven't gotten much recognition yet, hence the low price. If you walk in and ask for a great, say, pinot, they may point you to one of the lesser known varieties--aka $4 or $5/bottle! I say it often but I'm not much of a wine snob. However, I have friends who really know their wine, and they love Colonial too! I highly recommend it, especially if you have to buy for a large crowd or party. Ask them about discounted rates by the case as well, if you are buying for an event! I take away one star just because of the semi-sketchy location, but otherwise it's great! read more

3.5 One thing's for sure: they ain't lyin' about the prices. Wow. If you're pinching pennies, strapped for cash or just plain ol' cheap... but in need of adult juice, drive down to Melrose and enjoy some of the most wallet-friendly booze prices in town. I mention 'booze' because that's what you'll find here. Well, that and wine. Like many liquor stores around town, beer is an afterthought and if you're really in need of suds, there's a pretty awesome destination across the street. But this isn't the time or place for that review. This review is all about cheap booze and wine. The number 3 is very popular here. 3 for $21? Okay. 3 for $10.99? What?? Amazing. I'm in. Now, you shouldn't see these prices and expect to walk out with bottles of Dom or Cristal but I doubt you'd find either here anyway.* But, for the price point, I think you'll be more than satisfied for what you're getting. As with most things in life, this is all relative. But, if you find yourself on a Saturday shopping at a place named Colonial Discount Liquors, I would hope that your expectations are firmly in place. The store itself isn't so large as to get lost. There's a decent amount of space to walk around and shop for some choice bottles (take some time and look around). As one might expect as such a venue, there are some 'colorful' characters who shop here. From what I observed, everyone's harmless enough but if interacting with the unwashed masses gives you hives, you may want to leave the pearls at home. Remember: this place is cheap. That's why you're here. If in the search for cheap (seriously, cheap) booze, take the time to stop on by and check out what you can find. 10 to 1, you'll be walking out with, at least, one bottle of Gato Negro. I think the folks at CL are investors. *But if you did, I bet they go for much cheaper than you'd expect. Save me a bottle. read more

If you're boozin' on a budget, here is my advice: Go to Frugal MacDoogal for liquor, and Colonial Liquors for the wine. They always have a running special for wine - 3 bottles for $11 - and sometimes others. I don't know that much about wine, but I do know what tastes good and I've never had a bad bottle from Colonial. read more

This is a great wine shop for modest prices, but it's really not all that much less that other places. First of all, unless you work or live by Colonial Liquors, you'll probably spend more in gas getting there, given gas prices these days. But, if you are out this way, they do have wines discounted somewhat. One pinot noir I like is normally around $8.99 at Frugal MacDoogal's (see review). I got the same wine here for $7. See what I mean? I also saw another wine I like discounted about two dollars as well. If you are buying a lot of wine for a party or summer cookout, this place would save you money. Two dollars here and there adds up! But, if you purposely go here hoping to get your normally $60 bottle of Russian River Valley Pinot for $5, I hate to tell you, but it ain't happenin'! No steep discounts here. But, hey, a buck is a buck and if you save a couple, good for you! I'll give this place another try next time in in the neighborhood, which isn't often. Why hasn't anyone ever told me about this place? I've lived right around the corner for 3 years and I've been driving all the way to the liquor store by Kroger to get my wine. I randomly dropped in after dinner across the street and it was like I had stumbled upon a gold mine. They have a whole rack of wine for $3.75 a bottle or 3/$10.99. And it's decent wine! I'm sold. Good prices and decent box wine, sometimes on sale for extremely low prices. I usually just enter, turn right, take three bottles of Gato Negro, pay, and leave. I like the free-form parking lot entry / exit. There's no curb, so watch for cars turning in and out in random trajectories. read more

Based on whatever route I decide to take home, I pass Colonial Liquors if I want. And I want quite often ;) It does look a bit sketchy, but the staff couldn't be any friendlier. Plus the things I buy are usually a dollar or three cheaper . They do have really great deals if you're buying in bulk ($3 for $10.99 and up) for people who aren't wine snobs. Parked in the lot and planned to run inside, but chose to run next door for probably 15 minutes before heading into Colonial to pick up a bottle of wine. Went into the store to make a purchase, only to return to a boot on the vehicle. Thinking that perhaps the employees would realize that they had booted the car of a patron who had only left the car unattended for about 20 minutes, I went back inside to ask about the boot and reach a resolution, but was instead called a "fucking retard" by the 30-something year old, tattooed, white man with longer hair and a beard who charged $50 for the boot removal. Honestly, I understand sticking to the rules & charging the boot removal fee, even in a misunderstanding like this, but the language and attitude of the employee I interacted with was incredible disrespectful and concerning. Rules are rules, yes, but name-calling & threatening to "beat my ass" was truly unjustified and disgusting. I admit that I expressed some frustration and disappointment with their way of doing business with a chuckle, but in no way did I provoke or instigate this level of behavior from this employee. I hate leaving negative comments & reviews, as I myself work in the service industry, but I truly feel like it is necessary to warn others about this individual. I'd like to say nice things about the other employees that work there, as they were nothing but kind, but it worries me that they seem comfortable working alongside this man who so freely uses derogatory slurs and threatens young women with violence over a minor misunderstanding. It's $50. I can live with the fee. The behavior, though, is reprehensible. read more
