This time we pushed off from this marina....well, we didn't really use the dock of the marina, we just threw our kayaks in the agua and hopped in our hoopties. The parking is adequate and the facilities are pretty nice. The water here is fairly protected and away from the main flow of the Columbia; although it is a little slimy and gooey in spots. If you go to the "lagoon to the left, you have some nice still water options. It was interesting to paddle around this patch because every few seconds huge cuts and spashes would happen around you (I assume these must have been bass trying to have me lunch). We wanted to practice flipping ourselves in our crafts and getting back on our rides, so we headed out for the open water of the Columbia. Man, there were plenty of people on the water this day, but we managed to find a good place to dunk ourselves---I didn't really mind since it was hella hot out. There are plenty of put-in options in the Tri-Cities and this is but one, but it was certainly adequate, free, and provided an afternoon of fun.

There's tons of open space for picnics, barbecues, or just hanging out by the water, and areas to play games like volleyball. Kids will love the play area and the nearby Richland Rotary Beach too. What I also liked is how close it is to restaurants and coffee spots--just a quick 5-10 minute walk if you want to grab food or drinks. Overall, it's a really nice park with something for everyone. It's no surprise that during our time here, Howard Amon Park served as a gathering space for all the locals. We visited Howard Amon Park a few times as it's located along the Columbia River Trail with many different amenities here for multiple activities. There are many playgrounds, a small wading area for kids, water fountains, bathrooms, dog poop bags, benches, BBQ grills, and the best part - swimming docks. On those sunny days, Howard Amon Park is a great place to hang out in and cool down with a swim in the Columbia River. Howard Amon Park is located in the downtown area of Richland, walking distance to many businesses and lodging options. It's easy to find, with parking available as well as street parking that's easy to find. For some outdoor space that's in Richland, this is where to recreate.

Meh...Not the greatest hiking spot…read more We were looking for a place to get out for a short hike while driving through the area. Chamna has a load of cross-crossing paths along the river adjacent to the freeway. There's a nice, big parking lot and pretty good signage through the preserve. The trails look like they'd be enjoyable for those on trail bikes...not so much for those on foot. Part of the paths are very narrow and winding. Fun to traverse on a bike I'm sure, but it was pretty boring for us. No real scenery especially this time of year, and although dogs are supposed to be leashed we saw a lot of poop on and around the trails and a couple off leash while we were there.

The trail that runs closest to the river has very lush vegetation and reminded us, at times, of scenes out of "The Lord of the Rings," complete with huge spider webs at one point. You can bring dogs on a leash and pick up after your pet. Sadly, we did see a couple of filled poop bags left along the trail. We also saw horse poop and a group on horseback so you need to watch where you are walking on the wider open trails. It was nice to come across many signs which show you exactly where you are and where the trails will lead. It was strange to hear the traffic from the nearby highways, but as a visitor from the Midwest, I found this to be a pleasant, manageable hike with a unique change of scenery. A great variety of wildflowers and plants can be seen along the trails. I was wearing shorts but I recommend long pants so your legs don't get scratched up by the plants along the trail. Plus, I was so afraid of finding a rattlesnake or huge spiders on the trail, from the size of the webs we saw. It was nice to walk where there were trees for shade too, as it made for a much cooler hike. Great place for a family hike.

The Riverfront Trail goes along the Columbia River with amazing views of the scenery and is well-maintained. We walked part of the Riverfront Trail in the downtown Richland area and I can't say anything bad about it. The trail was well paved as people could walk, bike or rollerblade due to its flat and smooth surface. Many people use this trail and along it, were benches and trash bins. I recommend walking along the Riverfront Trail when you're in Richland as it gets you up close to the Columbia River and depending on where you are, you could even stop in and swim or dock off from it on an American West cruise ship. A space where you can walk and get fresh air is needed in all communities and this is an exceptional one in Richland.

It's a flat and wide trail that meanders through a variety of extremely palatable scenery along the Columbia River. Mucho gusto! However, I do have a question. Milfoil is the bane of Green Lake and Lake Washington. But on the Columbia River, it's dead tumbleweeds. They collect in huge mounds around boat docks and in the river's nooks and crannies. Which agency, if any, is responsible for tumbleweed cleanup? Would it be the City of Richland, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or the State of Washington?
