They provide you with an inflated estimate and when insurance reduces the amount that is allowable billable based on what should be reasonable pricing, they charge you for the massive difference. Age Discrimination I have held an appointment at the end of the day for about 9 months to receive an implant. I have paid completely for it. 4 days before my appointment I was told that because of Covid and because I am over 60 years old my appointment is being canceled and I must accept one of 3 appointment choices: 7 am 7:30 am or 1 pm. My work schedule won't allow me to arrive prior to 2 pm. It is totally unfair that this office is expecting their clients to make all the adjustments for Covid and make none themselves. read more

If you can get somebody to call you back, you should run. I already had an xray with my regular dentist which they had but they still required they take their own then they also made me get a CT scan at a cost of 150 to me to tell me everything was fine and my surgery would be routine. They ran behind schedule at both my consultation and my surgery and given the number of patients waiting with me and the over use of x rays for Billing,I would guess I was booked at the same time as 5 other people. The staff was pleasant but clearly stressed and Dr. Auzins spoke rudely to them on several occasions. I would never recommend them and I will never return. read more

WOW! I never thought I'd say this but having my wisdom teeth removed was actually a pleasant experience. I had a LOT of anxiety about it and procrastinated the procedure for years! I hate dentists, hospitals, surgery... so the thought of what I was going to go through terrified me. All I can say is that Dr. Auzins and his team were amazing. Very calming atmosphere. He prescribed me 3 Valium's, one to take the night before, and two the morning of. I walked in the office so relaxed. To be honest the next thing I remember was walking out an hour an a half later. I don't remember anything in between which is exactly how I wanted it! The recovery period was un-eventufl. The office gave me a thorough list of do's and don'ts for every day of the week following the surgery. I seem to be healing up very nicely so they must have done a great job! About 7 days after my surgery, I still had a slight pain in one area so I called them to see if they would mind seeing me for a follow up. They had me come in within an hour of the phone call, cleaned the area out, inspected everything and gave me a clean bill of health and didn't even charge me for the additional visit. I would highly recommend that anyone who has any anxiety about these type of procedures, go see this guy! You will be SO glad you did! He's a genuinely nice guy who loves what he does. read more

Above and beyond are the best words to describe this entire practice. I had a dental emergency today, I was in pain like you wouldn't believe. Dr. Auzins agreed to see me minutes after getting a referral from Lauralwood Dental next door, even though he had a fully booked schedule. He WAS stern when I told him I really didn't want IV sedation, but after he explained why simple Novocaine wouldn't do, I understood completely and could tell he just wanted to help me in the most humane way possible. I came back a few hours later for the extraction and I admit, I did feel a bit guilty because I could tell I had already put them a bit behind from my morning consult. Every single person I interacted with in the office was extremely kind to me and empathetic regardless. I knew I made their day longer by having to squeeze me in, but they didn't let it affect my care at all. I was referred to Dr. Auzins and Columbia Oral Surgery by my regular dentist because finally, after years of issues, I was ready to have my wisdom teeth removed. I went in for the initial consult and was absolutely floored by their patient care and services. I myself work in a field where we pride ourselves on patient care and customer service, and it makes me so happy to see other businesses and practices with the same ideals. I had full X-rays done in a super cool machine that looked like it came straight out of Star Trek. The staff is so kind and welcoming, I had to wait a short while to meet Dr. Auzins and one of the nurses/dental technicians came into the exam room just to check in and help pass the time, so awesome. Dr. Auzins himself is a great guy and clearly loves what he does, he is very kind and willing to answer any questions/address any concerns you may have. Scheduling my procedure was very easy and convenient and I was given information during my consult as well as after-care instructions as well as a goody bag after the procedure itself. The morning of the procedure I was very calm (very helpful that they prescribe Halcyon beforehand, although I didn't feel very nervous to begin with) and everyone was just fantastic, cheerful, and helpful with everything. The atmosphere in the office is just so comfortable and the dental/surgical work they do is top of the line. To top it all off, that evening I received a phone call from Dr. Auzins just checking in to see how I was feeling after the procedure. Absolutely above and beyond! I had all four wisdom teeth removed here about 6 weeks ago. Two were standard removals and two were impacted. I had "general" anesthesia. The office was quiet, warm, and pleasant. The staff was kind and polite. The procedure was easy and quick given what they were doing, and I did not have any pain during the procedure. I realize that everyone's experience is different, but compared to some other people's stories, I felt that my healing period has gone quite smoothly. I do not have any numb spots despite the depth of some of the roots, my wounds have all healed up well, and my mouth is so much more comfortable. And lastly, they were flexible given the fact that I don't have any dental insurance and gave me a discount along with signing me up for Care Credit so I was able to afford the procedure and then pay for it over a year without any interest. I've had LOTS of dental work including root canals, crowns, oral surgery and now I need several implants. I have inherited really crummy teeth despite vigilant care. I chose Dr. Auzins to do my implants (he has done 4 already) and I need 3 more. He came highly recommended, was thorough and kind during the consultation, gave me every option to consider. The surgeries were complex, but Dr. Auzins totally rocked them. His skills are excellent, his staff is very nice and caring. I had to get my wisdom teeth removed and I was very nervous about it. I just had the procedure done on Monday and I have to say that I am so happy that I was referred to Dr. Auzins. Everything about the process was very straight-forward and professional. Everyone was very friendly during my consultation and answered all of questions and concerns I had. The surgery went very smoothly. I was asleep and woke up just as they finished. I was extremely nervous in the chair. The staff did everything to make me comfortable, including giving me a super comfy blanket! I am healing as planned. My teeth were impacted and I can tell Dr. Auzins did a great job. There is minimal swelling and minimal pain, especially in comparison to what I thought it would be like. The part that really impressed me was that Dr. Auzins personally called me that night and left a message to check in. That's definitely above and beyond service! Surgery was fine, follow-up care was fine, but it has taken more than six weeks to get a refund of the amount they asked me to pay but which my insurance actually paid to them. I've called and called, each time being assured the 'the check will be cut on Wednesday' only to get a new story and a promise that it will be next week. At the time of this writing, I still do not have the money, only another promise. They don't dispute that they owe me the refund, by the way, they just can't seem to pay it. And for some reason, they can't refund to my credit card even though that's how I initially paid them. So I have to wait & wait. This may not be a large amount of money to them, but it will almost fill my gas tank. This surgeon needs to rearrange his business office and procedures if he wants any repeat customers from our household. There are plenty of oral surgeons in and around Portland who manage to pay their bills on time. UPDATE: We did ultimately receive our refund and are satisfied. Additionally, the bookkeeper contacted us personally to make sure everything was okay, which was a nice personal touch and very much appreciated. read more

I also wished we had checked these ratings before choosing this office! We were referred here by our primary dentist so we assumed that the experience would be a positive one....as others have stated, the dentist himself was very professional in his interactions and responses to our questions during our consultation, so no complaints there. BEWARE of the billing people -- they outright lied to us when they asked us to pay for the consultation as we were checking out, telling us it was not covered by our insurance. I questioned it at the time and asked the front office person if she had just spoken with MODA, and her response was 'yes.' I took her word for it and paid with my credit card. I called MODA immediately when I got home, and as I had thought, our consultation was covered 100% and they had no record of anyone from that office calling them to confirm our benefits. I then called the dental office immediately afterwards (that same afternoon, mind you) to tell them they had erroneously billed me. She said she would have their 'third party billing' person call me in the morning. No return call from them the following morning, so I called them at 8:30 a.m.and the Office Manager stated that their office went by the 'fax quote' that they received from some online listing and admitted that it was not the best way to get information! She said their policy was that they could not reverse any charges on credit cards (which is how I paid) and they "never know for sure if the insurance company is accurate over the phone so they cannot refund anyone until they get the actual payment from the insurance company''! In other words, it was their error to charge me for a covered benefit, but I have to wait until the insurance company pays them, and then they will send me a 'refund' check which can take 4 to 6 weeks! For their mistake??!! As the previous rating stated, I wonder how many people this office has overcharged when patients assume they are providing accurate information to them! I have also seen a complaint posted on the Better Business Bureau site for their billing procedures, and I also intend to post on that site if this issue continues to be unresolved. It has been a week since our consultation (June 23, 2013). I'm also considering contacting the Attorney General to inform them how many complaints are being posted for the billing procedures at this office. If you know anyone who plans to get their wisdom teeth extracted, send them elsewhere or have them scrutinize every line item on their bill or 'proposed plan' before they pay a penny! read more

I admit it. I am a super anxious patient. I require medication just for the consult. I was referred by my primary dentist when 3 of my molars, including one I had already had a very expensive root canal on, got really bad, fast. My dentist referred me to another oral Surgeon first and all they wanted to do were root canals. Hmm..seeing as my first $3200 Root canal lasted 5 years before destroying the tooth, this wasn't what I was looking for. That guy wanted thousands to root canal them all, "or you could just pull them which I don't do." So, I went to Dr.Auszins. He took a lot of time with me explaining EVERY OPTION not just 1, including pulling the teeth, which he does do, and there was no high pressure. Just logic, pros and cons. Costs were laid out easily, and we were able to make the informed decision to do dental implants. I dreaded the tooth pulling. My past experiences were not good. His staff were super sweet, empathetic, respectful and kind. They gave me medicine that relaxed me before I even sat in the chair. Then, Dr.AUSZINS started the IV. I have impossible veins. He got it in one. The procedure of pulling three teeth seemed like a dream. I woke up with out pain or nausea. His staff gave me what have to be the best postoperative instructions I have ever seen. Super easy to follow. Seriously, part of my own job is writing post operative instructions for clients. Their staff are experts in communication and customer service. Then, months later I went back to have the second part of the surgery. SAME EXPERIENCE. I just want to thank Dr. AUSINS AND HIS STAFF for being so very, very awesome. I also want to address the reviews about the billing department. They have a tough job. Trying to communicate with insurance companies is extremely complicated. They spent MONTHS trying to get my implants covered. Constantly communicating with me about any progress they made. (Which wasn't much because our insurance sucks). So, I don't understand what the others are complaining about. About the xrays, thats my only complaint. I wouldn't of consented to them if I had known my insurance wasn't going to cover them because I had already had two sets of xrays at my dentist and the other surgeon. But honestly, their method was 100 million times better than the other place and did actually show stuff the others didn't show. So, it was worth it. I am actually looking forward to using them for the rest of my mouth, (which despite lots of flossing, brushing and care, genetics gave me a crappy set of teeth) The staff is upbeat, but not fake. The office is calming and looks out into trees. And double bonus, Dr.Auszins is a Navy veteran. He used to be on aircraft carriers as an oral Surgeon. He has nerves of steel, a very calm and reassuring demeanor, and you never ever feel rushed or like your questions are unimportant. Nothing but a positive and painless experience. My #2 molar broke and could not be crowned or capped. Fortunately (glass 1/2 full) my wisdom tooth next to it was extracted decades ago so loosing this molar will have no effect in regards to 'shifting' of my teeth. I do not have dental insurance but I understand they're running a business and although I had a bit of sticker shock I did get a 5% discount (paying in cash) and Ashley at the front desk was very empathetic and I appreciate her understanding and ability to listen. After having my consult I felt completely at ease. Both the oral surgery nurse and Dr Auzins were very thorough. I really had no questions or concerns because they were addressed by them. Their office had to be in touch with my PCP because of a medication I'm on and they were on it. They contacted me several times just to make sure all the t's were crossed and i's dotted. Fast forward to the morning of the extraction. Although I was given a pre-op med to relax me before hand I did not need it and that's because of the confidence I felt about them after the consult and their obvious concern in regards to the med I referred to earlier. I did not feel at all nervous. Upon my arrival I was immediately escorted back and we got started. The nurses were very professional and friendly. There was no dilly dallying which I feel is important. Dr Auzins came in and administered the versed which I highly recommend. It took a few minutes for the versed to kick in, Dr Auzins returned and the tooth was pulled. It was completely painless and quick. My appointment was scheduled for 7:50am and because I live close I was home by 9:15. Not bad. I took 2 pain pills the first day and have needed none today! I feel great. Another thing I really appreciated is that Dr Auzins called me the evening my my procedure just to see how I was doing. No one wants to lose a tooth but if you do this is the place to go. I had never had any kind of oral surgery done before, it's not something anyone looks forward to. Dr. Auzin and his staff were fantastic; super organized, friendly and got me in and out so quick I was in shock how easy it was. Plus they don't play crappy music in the office, which easily kept me distracted from the surgery itself. Auzins said it would take a couple weeks for my stitches to come out and it only took a week. On top of all this, I learned that Dr. Auzins travels all over the world as a volunteer oral surgeon and he has a set of beautiful photos from his travels. The wisdom tooth extraction went ok but the billing is a JOKE! With so much competition you would think they would have this area squared away. We were verbally told at the the time of service that the total due, with insurance, was $373 and paid it there. We are now getting a bill, after insurance, for a measly $17.20. I called their OUTSOURCED billing company in Arkansas and they said they can't do anything about it. So, I called this location and was told by Stephanie that when we signed there was a clause that said it was an estimate. So, I guess they can say anything, because of the "clause". And really, for $17.20? They already got $1,828.80!!! Save yourself the headache and take your money somewhere else. read more

I recently had a tooth extracted at C.O.S. and it could not have gone better. It had been a very long time since I had a tooth pulled (my wisdoms years ago) and I was really nervous. In addition, the tooth had broken off and I was imagining all kinds of horrors that would be required to pull the remainder of the tooth. It was easy as could be. Everyone I dealt with was helpful and compassionate. I had the tooth pulled with just local anesthetic. A few shots and a few minutes and it was all over. I was sent home with a tote which contained everything I would need for my recovery and in short order I was just fine. As an FYI, the Portland office is located on the side of the Broadway Fred Meyer so parking is easy, tons of spaces. I could not be more pleased with the experience. I do hope not to have to use their services again, but if I have to I would go to C.O.S. without hesitation. read more

After a horrible experience with a failed root canal (after many years) and getting a tooth extracted, I went to COS to get an implant placed. I saw Dr. Sullivan at their Tigard office and I have no complaints at all. The office was clean, staff friendly, and the equipment new (I'm also in medicine). The surgery itself went very well and afterward I asked Dr. Sullivan how things went. He said it was one of the more complicated ones he had done, but I would have never known, considering how smooth it seemed to me as the patient. Good to know that he could make even the complicated case seem easy. Great work! read more

This was for Benjamin T Russell DMD LLC: When I went into the office for a consult, I specifically asked if there would be a charge because I did not know if I could go ahead with the procedure due to cost. Both the receptionist and dentist stated "No, there is no charge".Later I received a bill (10.21.2014)in the mail for $135. I called and asked why I received the bill and they said "it will be applied to the procedure" I told them that I was not going forward with the procedure due to cost and they said "you will have to pay the $135. I disputed the charge because of what I was told and they said the Doctor would have to call me back. I called twice and never heard back from them. I did not want late fees so I went in today (12.16.2014)and paid. There is no note in any of the financial requirements in fact it states "we ask payment at time of service" and they did not charge me at the time of the examination because I would of at that time refused the consult.I have paid the $135 but do not appreciate they in my opinion "bait and switched" because I was not going to use their service. read more

I will never set foot in this office again. It was a horrible experience from the time I called to schedule my consultation. From the time I called, before they had any knowledge of me AT ALL, they pushed general anesthesia, even though I explained that my doctor had recommended against it, and the receptionist was so judgmental and pushy about it that I was in tears by the time the call was over. I wish I had taken this as a sign and went elsewhere. While the assistant who took my x rays was nice and reassuring, once the surgeon came in, I wasn't listened to at all. I attempted to explain my health issues, which my doctor and I both felt made general anesthesia too much of a risk for wisdom teeth when there are options like laughing gas available that would keep me unaware. Even though he himself admitted it was going to be a simple removal, he refused to consider anything but general. It seemed as though that he thought I was making it all up. When he finally agreed to talk to my doctor it took him a month to actually get in touch with her, during which she tried several times to reach him and had told me she gave up because he never called back. When he finally did call later on, I spoke to her and found out that he hadn't actually talked to her about most of what I told him about, which made us both VERY uncomfortable. After that I decided there was no way I was going to him because I didn't feel like my best interests were being looked out for. I got a second opinion elsewhere with the help of my doctor at another office where they were much more understanding and made it clear that this office's conduct was unprofessional. The last straw was it taking me two months to get the refund of what I paid after insurance paid (if you have secondary, they still make you pay after primary, before they will even bill the secondary). Every time I called about it, they told me, "oh it will be a week or two," even after almost 6 weeks. If you want general, and don't mind potentially having a chunk of money tied up, this is probably the place for you, but otherwise, especially if you have unusual health circumstances, steer clear. read more

Even though "out of network" for our dental plan, I chose Columbia Oral Surgery and would absolutely recommend him and his staff. From the initial consult to the follow up call the day after (on a weekend), every step of the process was done efficiently and professionally (really appreciated Dr. Auzins coming out after the procedure to give an update about how the surgery went). We knew exactly what to expect during the recovery period, hand-outs about what foods and activities to avoid, chap stick stating "it wasn't that bad" - which my daughter said was really true. The best experience I've ever had at a doctor or dentist's office! Dr. Auzins really seems to care about patient comfort. He does the dental blocks, and walks away for 10 -15min to give the blocks time to get the area as numb as possible. I really appreciate this! In all of my previous dental procedures I have never had a doctor do this. They normally just want to hurry up and get started. I had a fractured tooth that had to be extracted, and I later had an implant post placed both at Dr. Auzins' office. Both procedures were very quick and pain free! The staff was extremely professional, and Dr. Auzins was very accommodating to the fact that I wanted epinephrine free dental blocks. I have had two terrible experiences where the epi made me so nauseous that it actually made me vomit all over the place in the dental chair. Extremely embarrassing! I also have to acknowledge how amazing his surgical dental assistants are! The doctor barely had to move a finger. They were extremely fast at anticipating and slapping the next dental instrument into his hand! I was truly blown away by away by their incredible teamwork! My positive experience was equally influenced by all of the staff knowing their jobs inside and out which enabled the flow of my appointment to go off without a hitch. Dr. Auzins is honestly the only doctor I have ever recommended for anything! All of my experiences with doctors and dentists in the past have been poor to just adequate. read more
