Placed an order online for in store pickup. When I placed the order I received email and text confirmation. Called the store as well to confirm the order. Drove 40 mins to the store only to have them tell me the price is now double. Cashier tried to convince me it wasn't the correct bottle because the label is different. Labels change all the time but it's still the same bourbon. She tells me I can have one bottle for what I paid. Why was the order confirmed and charged if it wasn't correct? I was already paying well over MSRP but now they want to charge over 300% of what some stores are selling it for. I happened upon this climate-controlled wine store while catching a bus, and I was glad to know it's there. It's a nice, attractive little store in the neighborhood, and reasonably priced, too, with a compact but thorough stock. They have more than the standard variety (and varietals) of wine you find up-uptown, some nice sparklers too. I was eyeing a teroldego and a valpolicella, but picked up a torrontes from Argentina and a Bandol rosé. Friendly helpful cashier, too. read more

It has a pretty sleek look that reminds me more of an art gallery than a wine shop, which is not necessarily a good thing (I prefer wine shops that give a warm vibe). A pretty solid, albeit not particularly adventurous, selection of wines. Ten years ago, a friend told me about how she had to return a bad bottle of wine to a wine shop. I remember wondering how bad the bottle could have been for her to return it; only tonight did I realize what she meant. When a group of friends and I went to drink a bottle of the Marqués de Pluma, Ribera del Duero with dinner, we realized it was so acidic that we could not consume it. So, I've been in the hood for 5 years. I know that Columbia Wine Co. has gone through a plethora of management, employees and staff throughout the years, but they've always been the tried and true wine, beer and sprits company in the hood. They also deliver up until like 11pm or so. That makes them AWESOME and gives them at least 1 out of 5 stars. Today, however, they are BULLSHIT! They did a Rose Wine Tasting event and the consensus was that they were offering 10% off purchase of the featured wine. That sounded great, I tasted some awesome wine, I came with 3 friends, we ALLLLLLLL purchased wine. Crazy thing is none of us were given the 10% discount. We all were rung up by "Clerk 080" and she conveniently forget there was an event going on. Listen, I don't mind paying for quality but a wine tasting, the whole point, is to introduce people to new wine and spirits, and often times offer discounts so folks will purchase a bottle of something they would not have otherwise been able to afford or would have known about. To not apply the discount is shady and down right dishonest. I even asked the chick if she applied the discount and she said, YES. I'm looking at my receipt now, I see the cost of the wine, I see the tax, and I see the total, what I DON'T SEE is the 10% discount. It is what it is, I honestly don't wanna deal with the nonsense of having to call, discuss, and even possibly have to go back up there so I'm leaving a YELP in response. What gets me, what pisses me off and honestly disgusts me, isn't the mistake its the arrogance of her having the chance to rectify the situation and she CHOOSING not to. Again, I specifically asked if she applied the "10% Rose Fest Discount" and she specifically said, YES. So, what else was I supposed to do? UNFORTUNATELY my recipe is saying something different. Anyway, that said, I'm sure people are going to continue to frequent this place because it's convenient and they deliver, which is a MUCH welcomed convince, however, FYI there is another wine store between 174th and 175th in the 4100 block of Broadway called PALACE WINE AND LIQUEURS. It's chill, the prices are just as good if not better, and they are nice and helpful. To be fair the manager (I'm assuming she was the manager) at Columbia was REALLY nice and sweet, we had some good conversation, but loosing money is loosing money, and that's never a game I want to play! Columbia Wine Company is one of those rare gems that just happens to be hidden in Washington Heights, out of all places! It's located right off the 168th subway station (A,C,1) . Personally, I think this place is amazing because they have a variety of wines to choose from and the prices are decent. You won't find another place this far up that offers such a vast array of wine selection without breaking the bank. The staff is extremely friendly, as well. read more

Being a wine lover, one of the first places I tried when I moved to the Heights was Columbia Wine Company. I now go there at least once a week. I can't say enough wonderful things about the store. They have an amazing selection of wine and spirits, including two delicious vodkas that are inexpensive (White Nights and Sobieski), St. Germaine, Mamajuana, and Tanteo, an incredible infused tequila. They have wine (and sometimes spirits) tastings Th-Sat 5-8 so I always get to try something new. Victor and Humberto are incredibly friendly and helpful and I have never felt that they looked down on me for not being able to afford more than $15 for a (good!) bottle of wine. In fact, it's the only store in my neighborhood where I can walk in and be greeted by name. It's cool to be able to call them my friends. I highly recommend Columbia Wine Company. A wine and liquor store with a SELECTION? In Washington Heights?! YES. Dozens if not hundreds of different kinds of wine are stocked in this store. The staff have all been very pleasant and very knowledgable, and the occasional wine tasting that happens is always nice too. Plus, their liquor selection doesn't JUST include the old standbys - they import liquors from all over the place. This is not the closest liquor store to my apartment (that distinction goes to the liquor bodega on 177 and bway where you walk into a bulletproof cube and make your selections by pointing), but it is the best. The owners are very knowledgeable and friendly and they have a nice selection of wines in a good range of prices. Lots of solid bottles under $10 which is great, plus some really good values in the $10-$15 range. Also a decent selection of liquor. Plus the experience of shopping here is just so damn pleasant, which is in sharp contrast to the rest of the immediate neighborhood's liquor options that you've just gotta love this place.While this would probably be a 4 star anywhere else, for the neighborhood, it's an easy five. read more

But we wanted to make sure that we had our brand without lugging the magnum around all night. So we popped in to Columbia and asked if they'd hold a bottle for us to pick up on way back from dinner. Seconding Michael C. on this one. Finally -- a liquor store in the Heights that doesn't put two sheets of bulletproof glass between you and its salespeople. This place is a massive improvement over every booze seller within a thirty block radius. The classiness is palpable here. But Columbia Wine also manages to avoid pretension, mainly by emphasizing friendly service and, more importantly, cheap but high-quality wine. The owner clearly knows what he's doing -- my group bought several bottles, all under $10, all tasting like they should have cost much more. The cherry on top is its selection of relatively exotic liquors, like Sagatiba cachaca, previously unseen out of Brazil, and Brugal, the Dominican rum. Great neighborhood wine and liquor store! I've been coming here for years and am a big fan. The store itself is nice and clean, with a good selection. I'm not primarily a wine drinker, so for me they have plenty. I am, however, a bourbon man and their selection is pretty good! They're also keen to help you or give you recommendations. On occasion, I have seen tastings and samples, which is fun. They also have delivery, how cool is that? Several times I've called them up and had hooch delivered to the crib. The were also open during snow storm Stella, so bonus points for that. Just because there's a blizzard doesn't mean I'm not tryin' to get my swerve on! A cute seller of (mostly) wine and (some) spirits just steps away from the Columbia Medical Center campus. The store is very clean when compared with the other stores in the area and the staff that work there are pretty knowledgeable about the products they offer and are eager to find you a good match. The wines are organized by regions (although some folks may not notice the highly positioned labels) and the liquors, etc are grouped by similarities. Classiness is great, but what's really important to me is the price tag. Standing in front of the wine wall, there were only two bottles over $20 in my field of vision. There were some as low as $4.99. Even I didn't drop that low. I went to a trashy college wine shop in New Haven the next day and had trouble finding anything below $20, except for Carlo Rossi. I bought beer. The staff at Columbia was very friendly and happy to walk customers through and give them advice as they made purchases. The liquor selection on the opposite wall was as impressive as the range of wines. If I lived anywhere near here, I'd start drinking wine much more frequently. read more

This place went downhill quickly!! I used to love this place but in the last 6 months, I am always told to check back "in a couple of hours for their delivery, tomorrow, a week or so" for certain wines and liquors which they promised to re-stock. Not ONCE have they actually re-stocked it. I was given attitude today by the girl who works there because I reminded them they tell me that constantly. This is the last time I go here. In short: this place carries NO name brands. Not even your basics like Patron, baileys, etc... Forget about enjoying a wine, because when you come back they will never have it again. Update: I placed another delivery order and received a call shortly after my order. I called back thinking they may want to apologize but in fact the manager Christian called to ask that I change my review. Nothing else no "I'm sorry sir", no "How can we rectify the problem." After agreeing to change it Christian responded "ok then I'll send the order out now." I guess they think it's ok to strong arm their customers into good reviews. I agreed to change my review so I'm gonna do just that. I called today to speak with management after refusing to give me an email address I was "banned" by Christian. Columbia Wine Co. just opened up two days before Thanksgiving 2008. I had seen it being built the months prior to opening. Turns out they had to remodel for about 10-12 months. Anyways, it shows, because this wine store is pretty snazzy inside - hardwood floor, iMacs, exposed ventilation ducts, insert-other-modern-decor cliques that I love hahah. I know, why critique the decor, when it should be all about the wines. Well if you've ever been in the Washington Heights area, classy stuff is sorta lacking, and Columbia Wine Co. provides a straight infusion of class. The wine selection is pretty huge too. Don't worry if you're overwhelmed by the choices. I was warmly greeted by the very nice manager Humberto, who walked me through their choices and helped me choose a couple bottles. Prices are definitely on par with what I normally see. Since Columbia Wine Co. just opened, it has been offering daily wine tastings from 5-8pm. Liquor is available as well. Definitely a welcome addition to the CUMC neighborhood. read more

If you've ever bought liquor in the Heights, you've either grown accustomed to (or grown numb to) buying beer from behind thick glass. This means being unable to see what your options are and having to always go in with a spirit in mind. Pretty lame, really. But Columbia Wine is bringing some civility back to the Heights with it's bullet-proof window-free setup and tasteful wine and liquor selection. I came in here for the first time right before Christmas looking to buy wine for a friend and a bottle of scotch for my cousin; one of the employees was dead on in his recommendations. He found a good wine to pair with the setti pesce dinner I'd be having that evening and a reasonably-priced bottle of scotch from the Deanston brand that turned out to be the best scotch my cousin and I had ever had. To some extent, my first extent was to think the prices here may be a bit high, but considering the atmosphere, the help you get, and the lack of other options in the Heights, I was happy to pay what I did and felt I got my money's worth. Columbia Wine is a great, classy addition to the Heights and should be your go-to spot if you want unique wines and liquors, a helpful staff and good recommendations. I did noticed one reviewer had his feathers ruff-led by their failure to have in stock the liquor he wanted, my advice: try something else! There's plenty of gems in here! read more
