** The following review reflects my experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** This is the Tale of Two Markets. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch... well, you get the drift. Anyway, if you're familiar with the hillside hamlet of Kensington, you're likely aware that there are two small commercial areas. One is up on Arlington at Amherst where there are several stores and small businesses at the Berkeley border. The other is at Colusa Circle where the legendary Narsai's used to be and now the farmers market holds court on Sundays. Both feature all-purpose markets that provide the lifeblood for their local communities especially as we survive through shelter-in-place. The market on Arlington is Young's which is a bit more jam-packed but convivial. Colusa offers a bigger fresh produce selection prominently displayed as you walk in the store, while their deli counter sits in the back. Jamie W. and I come here less frequently than Young's simply because of geographic proximity, but thanks to the Kensington paths, it's pretty easy to get from one market to the other. New owners have transformed the neighborhood market and really spruced it up. New floors, new and expanded merchandise, new cashier counters. An incredible wine selection. Fabulous meat choices. It is a work in progress, a labor of love. And a costly undertaking. It is clear that they are passionate about their store, they are working hard to attract customers with an every expanding inventory. I have talked to Henry, one of the sons of the family business, several times. They have been working hard to make the store attractive and fill it with items that go beyond the everyday necessities. The store is super clean, new signs hanging from the ceiling show the way to categories. An ATM machine near the entry is convenient for paying cash, the preferred method of payments. I am happy to have such a fabulous neighborhood store nearby and I wish them success!

The reason I come to this one more often is because it's closer to me in the East Bay. They don't have a lot of organic produce and the prices for all the produce is a bit high for what it is. There's a lot of different pastry booths and there's a Semi Freddy's Cafe close by. The Frog Hollow farm has great fruit and pretty good simple pastries. They also offer their fruit preserves on a discount that is much cheaper than in stores or online. Their apricot preserves is one of their best ones and has the least amount of sugar. I come here quite often to get lunch on the weekends. There's also a really nice rotisserie chicken truck that makes amazing rotisserie chicken for about $17 and they also have rotisserie duck and rotisserie pork. They have a lot of roasted vegetables that can come with their rotisserie meat but unfortunately, all their potatoes and vegetables are covered with animal grease so it is not for people watching their cholesterol. It's easy to pick up a whole rotisserie chicken for a lovely Sunday meal and have leftovers for work for a few days. It's better than any rotisserie chicken from the supermarket but will cost about twice as much. However, you get to see them roast your chicken so you know it's very fresh and the skin is crisp.

It's on Solano Avenue so it's in an area with a lot of other food spots. They have great friendly service that made us feel welcomed when we entered the store. We got their Spicy Pork Belly Rice Bowl, Beef Tofu Soup, Rose Tteokbokki, and Spicy Cold Noodles. I personally liked the rice bowl and the tofu soup the best! They both had a nice comforting vibe to each dish that I really liked. Their cold noodles and rose tteokbokki were not bad either, but I personally didn't find them to be too memorable. They have a cute patio in the back that we didn't get to sit at, but I heard is very cute. I'd love to come back to try their lunch sets as well! Overall, solid Korean restaurant - definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a Korean spot in Berkeley!

Not overly spicy, just well-balanced and delicious. The plate came with rice, broccoli, and a selection of traditional banchan, which rounded out the meal nicely. I also ordered a glass of Chardonnay and was pleasantly surprised by the generous pour. Bonus points for that! I chose to sit on the back patio, which is absolutely delightful and made for a relaxed, enjoyable dining experience. Between the tasty food, pleasant atmosphere, and friendly service, this is definitely a place I'll be returning to. Highly recommended.

KitKat was a loved cat in San Francisco. All people who visited the area knew him. I go to the area often ever since a kid as a church my mom liked was just a few doors down from here. I had already dropped off a basket but apparently it was a 'danger' - his whole memorial and all the flowers. Perhaps it blocked the sidewalk or something. My idea was to make something that could get tied to the tree and not be a nuisance to anybody. Trader Joes has my cats favorite cat treats and I love getting him toys. I thought little KitKat would love the toys from here too. TJs didn't disappoint and I found garland for a wreath and some mice with feathers - cats love that sort of thing. I busted out some floral wire - something I've never done before in my life - but for little KitKat - I suppose I can go above and beyond - especially after his treatment from SF public works. TJs is a pleasant shopping experience as always and I enjoy my visits very much. My favorite TJs in near Granite bay/ Roseville where customers and workers have a wall of their pet photos by the pet section.
