Maybe I'm a little biased but ever since I started earning my own money, I've come here for brunches and dinners. I absolutely love this place. It's a small restaurant, with high ceilings so it never feels stuffy. Service is always extra friendly and warm. Most recently, I visited for a weekend brunch and was surprised that there wasn't a wait. I ordered an omelette from their specials board and some orange juice. The omelette was filled to the brim with bacon and sun dried tomatoes. Very yum. Breakfast potatoes were herby and delicious. Tbh my favorite thing about IK is their homemade challah bread. I used to come for dinner and go home with extra loaves. So of course I asked for a slice of that toasted with my breakfast. All in all so wonderful. I'm so sad they stopped serving dinners regularly, but would definitely recommend visiting for their simple yet fulfilling brunch and special occasion dinners!! read more

While I was waiting for my friend, the waiter kindly invited me to sit by the window so I could keep a look out for her inside the restaurant. I still HEART the Corn-Cilantro Pancake with Buttermilk Biscuits, Is my all time favorite and remains that way. I used to go here almost every week in the mornings but now it's maybe a couple times a year. It's a small place and it's always the same employees in a nice neighborhood. The food quality is good, and I recommend their biscuits as a side when they ask for what kind of bread. They have some things that you don't see everywhere else, so it's nice to have something a little unique. There's cilantro corn pancakes are really delicious as is they're Cajun scramble. I've been coming to this spot in Kensington with my mom for many years, and we keep coming back for their consistently great breakfast options great service and plenty of indoor seating. Today's specials were a real treat, featuring both chicken soup and posole which wasn't exactly traditional but good. My mom enjoyed their legendary seafood omelette, packed with salmon and shrimp--it was absolutely delicious! Alongside that, I ordered the classic two-egg and bacon breakfast. Cute brunch spot in Kensington! I've driven by many times when I visit my dad and his partner or my aunt, but hadn't dined in until today. My mom, aunt, and I came here around 1 pm and were seated right away. I had the corn cilantro omelette with biscuits. My mom and aunt each got an egg dish (omelette or scramble - can't recall who got what) and a cappuccino. The cappuccino had the most foam I've seen and I would try it earlier in the day. The biscuits are AMAZING! I love the strawberry jam at the table. Honestly I can't imagine coming here and not getting the biscuits. The corn cilantro pancake was unique and not overly sweet. The black beans had a smoky sweet sauce that was different from what I was accustomed to but still complemented the dish. Service was friendly and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. my first time at Inn Kensington today on a trip from the East Coast to visit my daughter. The menu looked very creative and several breakfast dishes appealed, but I went for the Mexican Scramble as it was out of the ordinary. It was a mistake. The dish was swimming in oil from the soggy tacos and melting cheese. it was the first time I have been served half an avocado at a restaurant that was way past its prime. Until recently, I'm not sure I've been back to Inn Kensington since my review 14 years ago. Time does fly, and Gayle and I were pleased that this cozy and welcoming restaurant is still around after all this (including COVID). We ended up here for Lunch after our Tilden adventure (Steam Train and Little Farm). We wanted something close, child friendly, and didn't require a significant Yelp search. So between Inn Kensington and Fat Apples, this short distance is where we headed. As it was mid-week and a little past the Lunch hour, parking was easy and the restaurant had plenty of room. Restaurant staff were attentive/friendly and masked. It looks like Inn Kensington doesn't currently serve dinner, but the all day breakfast and lunch selections were all very tempting. Our granddaughter chose waffles of which we let her put powdered sugar on it as there's not a lot of difference (to a young kid) between that and maple syrup. She loved it so much that she kept asking to come back during the following days that we were taking care of her. Gayle and I each ordered and thoroughly enjoyed our "Indian Burrito". In other words: east Indian curried chicken baked in filo dough, topped with spicy mango-mustard seed chutney and served with a salad of seasonal lettuce and baby greens. Now doesn't that sound like a great alternative? It was. I hope it doesn't take as long (as it did before) to come back. I just found out that there is a botanical garden inside Tilden Park that is free, so I decided to make a morning of it and had breakfast at Inn Kensington on the way. Being such a popular neighborhood spot, I wasn't sure if there would be a wait. I got there at 8:30, and they open at 8:00 and there was no wait. Plenty of tables, seat yourself. Free street parking right out front, but a 1-hour limit. No problem! Service was lightning fast. I ordered the Grandmere omelette which was not thinking as there are potatoes in the omelette and on the side. I overheard another diner order the same without the potatoes on the side and they offered to sub fruit instead. D'oh! Wish I'd thought of that! It's a big, fluffy omelette, all pale yellow, like a proper omelette, not golden brown. The bites with bacon were delicious; without the bacon, I should have added salt and pepper, that were on the table. No hot sauce in sight. The potatoes were flavorful, though I like a crispy breakfast potato, and these were not. I asked for hot chocolate on that cold, heavily fogged in morning, and it was quite the concoction with a towering crown of whipped cream and dark, chocolatey beverage underneath--no Swiss Missing here. It was the real deal. This is a neighborhood joint with patrons often greeted by name. It's nothing fancy, it bears the patina of time, which can be a badge of pride when people just want to know there is a place where things don't change, trends aren't chased, just good food that is affordable and consistent, served with care and kindness. I've been coming here for a quarter century (love saying it that way), and it's the most reliably perfect and ridiculously prompt breakfast you will ever find. We've discussed this place at home since my kids were teens. Sometimes we call it "Big Bikit" for the enormous picture perfect biscuits (2) that come with your breakfast. Sometimes we call it "The Perfect Simulacrum of the Ideal American Breakfast," because it arrives almost before you've ordered, so we figure it must have been conjured by magic. The owner started working here in 1980 and eventually he took over the business. This is a lovely breakfast spot on the border of Albany and Kensington. I went on a Saturday at 10 and there were plenty of tables open. However, by 11, there was a small line. I ordered a coffee, The Regular Breakfast with chicken-apple sausage, and the Chorizo Scramble. The dishes were delicious, and I agree with other reviewers that the buttermilk biscuits are a must-try. They were soft, delicate, and mouthwatering (especially with the complimentary jam). My one complaint is that my home-fried potatoes were a bit lukewarm. It's possible they were sitting out for a bit while the scramble was cooking. This didn't bother me too much, though, especially because the food came out so quickly. Above all, I loved this place because of the ambiance. I'm originally from New England and this place gave me autumn Maine bed and bath vibes. I had such a peaceful breakfast experience and haven't been to a comparable restaurant in East Bay. read more

When the pandemic hit, Kensington Eats was created to crowd-source large orders from local restaurants with the intention of helping restaurants just like the Inn Kensington. At that time, our program focused on providing dinners in the middle of the week so families could get a break from cooking while still enjoying some restaurant-quality food. Unfortunately, the challenges associated with finding staff during that turbulent time forced the Inn Kensington to cut back its hours and focus on breakfast and lunch, which meant that they could never participate in our program. Despite requests from the community to collaborate with this local business in the heart of Kensington, we simply couldn't make it work. Fortunately, Inn Kensington's decision to move away from dinner service was a great long-term decision that allowed them to stabilize their finances and focus on their strengths. Phu, its host and chief barista, is very optimistic. He gave me a thumbs up when I asked how business has been. He added that it's been stable and that the new hours are a good balance to run their much-loved neighborhood restaurant. Since 1981, Inn Kensington has been at the same location serving consistently good food with genuine and friendly service. Regulars, typically Kensington residents, recognize beautiful original lithographs on each wall through their connection with Masterworks Fine Art (https://www.masterworksfineart.com). I made my first visit back since the pandemic on a rainy May morning. For me, ordering a latte never seemed to make much economical sense because a third of the drink is mostly foam and just doesn't hit the spot when I'm craving that morning caffeine pick-me-up. The Inn Kensington understands this predicament, serving it steaming hot, in a large, pint-sized glass. Pre-pandemic, my go-to breakfast dish was always the corn cilantro pancake and I was so happy to see it still on the menu. Served with black beans and sour cream, the pancake is wrapped around salsa fresca, avocado & feta cheese, which makes it a savory, slightly sweet, and tangy start to the day. When our kids were younger, they'd split Inn Kensington's trademark buttermilk waffle. Classically oversized, it's both crispy and fluffy and served with fruit and sausage, a balanced and kid-friendly breakfast. Finally, their selection of omelets doesn't disappoint. Options featuring seafood, chilies, grandmere, avocado and so much more occupy a third of their breakfast menu. Fluffy eggs are perfectly folded over fresh ingredients that I can never seem to replicate at home. I recalled with melancholy the days when the Inn Kensington offered dinner service, which created a very modest evening buzz in the middle of our little community. It was then I realized that even though the Inn Kensington didn't have dine-in dinner hours, they still had a commitment to dinner service! Available on their website is a menu of dinner entrees available for take-out Wednesday through Sunday. Orders placed by phone between 11 am and 2 pm can be picked up before 2 pm. Current entrees include baked salmon, spinach & cheese ravioli, and Thai coconut curry, all designed to be reheated and enjoyed at home. When the Kensington Eats program was active we wanted to give families the restaurant experience at home. I'm happy to see that businesses like the Inn Kensington have never stopped! read more

*** Vegetarian Review *** Now this is place is the definition of off the beaten path. Tucked away in the Berkeley Hills and if you don't know your way around, it's easy to get turned around on "The Fountain at the Circle" if you're using your map app. Doesn't make sense now, but on your first visit and if you take Marin Avenue from Hwy-80, you'll know what I'm talking about. That round-a-bout- is like the "Big Ben / Parliament" scene from European Vacation. I attached a map screenshot just so you get the idea. Inn Kensington is an absolute neighborhood gem. We have been coming here for a probably 20 years and although we now live about 90 minutes away, we still make an effort to come to see familiar faces and get wow'd by the speed at which the food comes. Trust me, you can have a party of 8 and once you place your order, your food will be delivered to your table within 4 minutes. I don't know how they do it. So with that said, if you're a newbie and you happen to see a line, don't fret, they seat you and get you fed so a table will open up eventually. Four tips for first timers: 1. Parking is limited to about 30 spots on Arlington Avenue. If you don't find a spot, make a u-turn and try again, but drive slower. You'll eventually get one. 2. This place definitely attracts the weekend crowds so just be patient. It's worth the drive up the Berkeley Hills and the food is fresh, fast, and delicious. 3. Two words ... Bis-Cuits and oh, homemade raspberry jam. I know their omelettes and scrambles come with two complimentary biscuits, but I'm not sure about the other breakfast items. The french toast does not. No matter what, you've got to have their biscuits. If you are a party of two, no need to order additional biscuits right away. The complimentary two are more than enough and if not, knock yourself out. They'll have that extra biscuit to you in less than 1 minute. 4. Inside seating is about 30 people. No outside seating available. Sorry no inside photo for you -- every table is usually packed and in such a small space, it's not easy to take a candid without getting the stank eye from one of your fellow patrons. Thus, no photo. Would I Come Back Test? Twenty years and still a loyal customer. Comparisons: Hard to compare a small neighborhood restaurant to a lot of chains that currently occupy my living area. But go here just so you can say you found a place nestled in the East Bay Hills. But if you truly need one, if you like the classic french toast at Black Bear Diner, you will be very pleased with Inn Kensington. French Toast ($11.95, Grade A): Three triangle pieces of challah bread served with fresh fruit, syrup, and butter. It's so homemade tasting and seems like the bread was just bought at the Farmer's Market. Not overly soaked so the bread stays semi-firm, not "eggy tasting" and so-so-savory! It arrives hot to the table so when you spread the butter, it just melts over the edges. The fruit is usually a mixture of cantaloupe, honey dew, purple grapes, watermelon, pineapple, banana, and mango, yes mango! And it doesn't have that "we've been sitting in a pool of liquid" taste you get at some hotel breakfast bars. So fresh and refreshing. Mexican Scramble ($14.95, Grade A): Three eggs scrambled with sautéed corn tortillas and green onion, topped with melted jack cheese, simmered salsa, sour cream and sliced avocado. This dish is so simple, but so tasty. They cut the corn tortillas into a little squares so you get a mouthful in each bite. We always recommend the simmered salsa and sour cream on the side to keep the scramble as hot as possible. My wife never finishes her food - she finishes this every single time. Probably my best endorsement I can make. Bonus - two large, homemade biscuits with unlimited homemade raspberry jam. So if you're like me and have a 3-1 homemade jam to biscuit ratio, this place is for you. Do us all a favor though, make sure to use the spoon and drop the raspberry onto your plate without contaminating it. When you leave your table, the jam stays. The jam is tangy and that beautiful raspberry color. We've come here and just ordered biscuits and jam to go. Orange Juice (Grade A) - Fresh squeezed and mild/medium pulp. Excellent! Bottom Line: If you're looking for a simple neighborhood, family-owned restaurant, look no further. It's about a 10 minute drive off of Hwy-80 into the Berkeley Hills so enjoy the views from the top. Anyway, I've experienced this restaurant twice now and had two rather different experiences, not good and bad, just different. There was hardly anyone in the place as the manager handed us breakfast menus automatically. I had the temerity to ask if they offered a lunch menu since I wanted to order a salad. He simply said no. So my score for Inn Kensington is Breakfast = 3 stars, Dinner = 4.5 stars, and Lunch = Incomplete, which I'm tipping over to 4 simply because the chicken was not dried out and because hey, I want to support the only restaurant in Kensington. This place is a great find! The prices were more reasonable than I expected and the fact that omelettes come with both potatoes and 2(!) biscuits led to us being very full after the meal. I also love the home made jam they have on each table. The employees were nice and seem to know many regulars and our food came out quickly. read more

I came here with my sister and dad. My sister recommended it because they had gluten free pancakes (or waffles). I absolutely loved this place. It's cute, charming, and we all had a nice time. And I vowed to come back, but I don't get to the area often. Switch up to the present and I see that there is nothing gluten free on the menu. This is terrible because I don't eat egg scrambles or omlets, and this place allowed me to have a good waffle. I also appreciated their espresso drinks and prices. No overpriced lattes here. So I live nearby. They have amazing everything and reasonably priced. Always very family feel when you go in there. They have a Mexican paella which has delicious spices. Azafran rice with very fresh seafood, several meats, when they have it. The bread is also delicious Last night ordered the teriyaki pork tenderloin with green onion and pineapple and it was cooked perfectly not too sweet.
