I saw this place in a Pinterest article on best places in NM for a green chile cheeseburger. Convenient for us, it was on our route from Santa Fe to Ft. Sumner. The cheeseburger was out of my mind when I saw the dishes the family was bringing out of the kitchen. I opted for one last helping of NM blue corn enchiladas, Christmas-style, while taking the risk of turning into an enchilada after so many on this trip. This was one hell of a way to end my time in NM. The enchiladas were hot and fresh - and I think the green chile scored a narrow victory over the red. The beans had an interesting chunky texture that paired nicely with the chewier enchiladas and rice. All in all - a great meal and a wonderful experience at this small town hideaway. This place is a bit of a hole-in-the-wall but do not discount it. Much like not judging a book by the cover, do not judge this place by the exterior. Everyone said their food was good. Average for a mexican restaurant. Personally, I ordered the menudo (brave for traveling through the state and having a solid 10+ hours to go to get to my destination) but it was sooo good. My toddler even ended up eating it with me. The tripe was tender, full of flavor and basically melted in my mouth. The broth was full of flavor and had the perfect amount of spice. The tortillas were delicious and light. Hands down one of the best roadside stops I've ever had. If you are in the area and hungry, give this place a shot! My passage through Santa Rosa NM seeking repast on the original Route 66 came on what appeared to be the wrong day of the week-or, possibly, the wrong season, or (most likely) the wrong century. Fortunately the bright neon of Comet II welcomed me and I found a seat in a dining room empty save for one large, jovial party seated at a set of pushed-together tables. I was pretty hungry after a day-long drive and opted for the "Famous Half Breed." Sadly the big table had ordered up all the steak on hand, and i had to pick another dish. No chile Relleno, either. I ended up with the Smothered Burrito. At this point a small figure on my shoulder is reminding me to sympathize that with COVID supply issues and the distances to any cities of size. Easy to see how a restaurant here could run low on supply. Another voice on the other shoulder, possibly sponsored by a restaurant down the road, was saying "we manage to keep adequate stock, what's wrong here?" (Yeah, but you're not open, so how about that?) Well, shush, you guys: we may never know the answer. I'm kinda glad not to be eating steaks that sat frozen for six months in reserve, but also wonder if the restaurant could do a lil better managing supply. Given the never-ending nature of this pandemic, we may never know. My plate arrived. I had asked for green chile but received red. The friendly server apologized and brought out some green in a dish. I was glad to have received the red, even if by accident, as the green seemed bland, a little too thick (in a cornstarchy way), and uninteresting. The red was more flavorful with a better texture. Overall this was a solid choice for a plate of Mexican, especially given all the other places up and down the road were closed or abandoned. It's got the requisite Route 66 vibe, with an eclectic set of photos all around the place showing off some of the quirky glory of the road that Interstate 40 replaced. The folks back home were wondering about any connection to the famous Comet Ping Pong in Washington DC, the place with the infamous and non-existent basement. A coincidence, I believe. read more

The stranding in the lovely hamlet of Santa Rosa continues. So I guess it's fitting that meal #2 would be at Comet 2 restaurant. Another of the throwback establishments along Route 66, keeping its head above water to serve the 66ers, and us fortunate ones who find ourselves waiting for car parts to arrive. Fun. After driving around the town sightseeing for 20 minutes, we worked up a huge appetite. There's a lot to see in Santa Rosa, IF, you know where to look. Apparently we didn't and that's why our tour was so short. But the street we were driving on put us smack dab in the path of the Comet, so we pulled in for an early dinner. Too bad it was still light out, the red neon would have spoken to me. I love neon. The Thursday early evening crowd was sparse, so we had our pick of tables. We chose a booth by the counter across from the kitchen. We were fortunate enough to see the chef pop his head out of the pass through. He looked competent, so we weren't worried about getting a top notch Mexican meal. Our friendly server brought us chips and not too spicy salsa. It fit well with my pineapple Jarritos drink. No beer on the menu. My order was a tamale plate. Two tamales, rice, beans, tortilla and garnish. I know, garnish. It's an old school term for stuff on the side of the plate. Very little nutritional value, but it fills up that embarrassing empty spot where nothing else fits. The tamales were covered in an interesting green chili sauce. It had potatoes in it. I loved it. The other plate at the table had a chicken chimichanga on it. Also covered in the green chili sauce. It too was accompanied with the traditional beans and rice. The meal concluded with a rice pudding like dessert. It was quite good, but it needed a bit more meringue. The main courses were good, rice ok, beans ok, dessert refreshing, garnish absolutely out of this world! I guess that's why the place is called the "Comet." Quick Tip: Go when it's dark. The neon will blow you away. It'll pull you off the 66. It compliments the blue of the nearby hole. read more

You know that moment when you go against your better judgment... because it's late, you're tired, and "I'm sure it won't be that bad".... Yep, that happened. THE STAFF WAS AMAZING, let me get that out there first. The food? Dear God, no. This was blasphemy and should not be called Mexican food. Taco Bell is more Mexican than this place; and it's not Mexican at all. LOL I got a chicken quesadilla (because I was worried before ordering and went with basic, tried and true that "no one" could mess up). WRONG. Bland. Also, I had stomach pains all night. Guacamole? No, try premade (from a distributor) smashed and whirled avocado with zero seasoning. My friend got a flauta, or so they claimed it to be. It was more of a chimichanga. Also bland, and ground beef. That's just... no. Ground meat at a Mexican place? Cmon man. Carne asada, yes. Ground beef? No. Just no. She was also up all night wanting to yack. Luckily neither of us did, so it was a mild issue. Road trip food is always an adventure! Well, traveling from Amarillo to Tucson we found ourselves looking for a place to sit and relax for a few. Getting of the interstate and cruising old Route 66 we found Comet welcoming us. Large parking lot and a bright restaurant offering their version of New Mexican Mecican food. Service was spot on and friendly. Clientele was mostly locals, so you know it has to be good. We enjoyed and highly recommend!!! read more

Well this was a bit of a disappointment. I was in town and looked at some Yelp reviews and found this place. It had really good reviews do I decided to try it. Since it was Sunday I ordered chicken. They were sold out of chicken. That's OK I didn't get to be age 66 without having a Plan B. So I ordered Catfish. Sold out of Catfish too. This frustrated me so I said maybe you should tell me what you do have. I was given several options and settled for B L T. It wasn't the best I ever had. Not bad, but was hard to swallow under the circumstance. After all my first two choices were denied. If I ever come through town again I believe I'll eat somewhere else. read more

Our first stop on Route 66 was this bright, friendly place. The server was so helpful in making decisions (I like recommendations) and we were not disappointed. My wife has the huevos rancheros with both red and green salsa. She eats vegetarian when she can and this was perfect for her. I had the chili relleno. The server suggested I get two chilis (the extra was only a couple of dollars) and although it looked like a lot of food, I finished it all pretty quickly. I chose the red and green salsa as well (wanted to try it both ways) and I really loved it. Just a bit of heat, nicely filled with cheese, and just the right coating of batter. The refried beans were a little dry, but tasty. The food came quick and the atmosphere was just what we had hoped for on Route 66! read more

The pralines come in several flavors, but I bought the traditional flavored. There was a batch cooling in the kitchen area, and I watched the lady cut the pralines and place them in the container. How fresh can you get? I purchased those and four other packs. Since returning home to Texas, I have rationed those pralines-- as a reward for myself and husband. The flavor is magical. As in other reviews I looked at I agree. This place is a gem. We visited during COVID Pandemic and they were following cleaning and distancing to a tee. No gloves but as much as they were cleaning there could not be a germ on hands. Masks were required for patrons and all staff are wearing them. They are wiping down tables, S&P shakers, napkin holders and seats between each seating. Very nice staff all way round. The location and decor are nothing to write home about but everything else adds up. The menu is the right size with assorted selections. My wife ordered a beef and cheese quesadilla which was a great size. I ordered a plate of two chile rellano's which was way too much. So unless your really hungry order one as it comes with a small side of rice and beans and fresh lettuce and onion on side. I wish we did not live 1,600 miles away. read more

I have been striking out on the eastern New Mexican cuisine. Most of it has been bland and just sub par. This diner on historic Route 66 didn't wow me either. Advertised as the best Mexican food in town, I was not fully impressed. I'll update when I try some other restaurants with similar cuisine. Prices were on the higher side with most dishes being over $10 with not a whole lot of substance or even a lunch special. I wonder if there is a local discount I don't know about? Service here was friendly and speedy though which is expected at a diner like restaurant. Plenty of seating too. Bathrooms were average. Parking was easy. There are postcards for those people feeling touristy. Burrito looked good, but again I was not getting all that Mexican flavor I would have liked to have seen. The guacamole was good. Salsa was nothing special. May try again, but rather see what else is out there. read more

Delicious food and super friendly people! 6 of us had dinner here Saturday night the 15th. They were so accommodating to seat 6 of us outside under their awning. This was especially welcomed with so many small businesses having to scramble for customers during this Covid shut down. We were so happy that they could take us. A few of us had the chili rellenos one red and one green. These were delicious! Perfectly fried and cheese stuff chili covered with delicious sauces!! Please believe what the other reviewers said about the chili rellenos, they are that delicious! Others had beef tacos and chimichangas. Everyone was pleased with their meal!! As I continue my journey around NM, we started our journey back home to Dallas. Kids wanted to stop in Santa Rosa again to hit up McDs. I wanted to attempt to try the green chile stew before I left the great state. Typing it in, this place came up first. Walking in, I wasn't greeted, but that's apparently the norm around here. Talks with locals have shown me that over the past few months service in the area has really declined. Santa Rosa businesses have shuttered all over the place and turnover has made keeping employees at these places hard. I placed a to go order for tacos and some soup. Was told 15 minutes. We ran up to McDs and got the kids' food. Came back and I ran in to pick up my food. It took 30 minutes to get my food. Overall it took almost 50 minutes for three tacos and a bowl of soup. The soup was already prepped for crying out loud. Imagine my surprise to see that my 10 buck plus tacos didn't include rice or beans, sour cream, nothing. Are you kidding me? No drink, nothing. Jesus. No wonder these places are closing. On a positive note, my waitress was nice. The soup was actually nice and spicy but it's sad. The prices here are absurd and the wait is ridiculous. Out of every city we visited Santa Rosa was the worst. If you are a tourist, do yourself a favor and keep driving. read more

Passing through on the I-40 and reverted to "Yelp stalking" for a good lunch meal and came across "The Comet." Not knowing what New Mexico Mexican food entailed I scanned the menu and noticed that the basic taco, tamales, burritos and chimichangas were all listed. The waitress brought chips and salsa to the table. The tortilla chips were extremely thin and constantly broke while attempting to load it up with salsa. The salsa had a little kick of heat from the mixture of New Mexico chiles. Flavor was good just needed a little salt to boost it up a notch. We ordered the taco plate which consisted of three ground beef tacos on home made flour taco shells, cheese, lettuce and diced tomatoes. The taco meat had good flavor.
