The tub in the shower didn't have a drain plug and looked like it needed to be painted badly, and the water pressure was very weak, that was the only downside, but not a huge deal for an overnight. This trip was no different--after a seven-hour road trip, the four of us (plus my service dog) rolled in, dreaming of a quick swim and some relaxation. Spoiler alert: that dream died fast. We used the Hilton app to check in, but I went down to the desk for a second key so my husband and I could both access the room and amenities. I gave my room number, and--without asking for my name, ID, or even confirming I belonged there--the employee just handed me a key and said, "Have a good night." I'm sorry, WHAT? That's not customer service, that's a security disaster waiting to happen. We stayed in room 504, where we were greeted by a musty, dirty odor strong enough to knock you backward. The room looked like it hadn't seen a dust cloth in years. The bathtub? Absolutely disgusting. Several light bulbs were out. The beds were lumpy and uncomfortable, the whole place felt like a tropical rainforest with the humidity, and the Wi-Fi (which I need for my work as a REALTOR®) didn't connect at all. To top it off, the shower had no hot water, and by morning, I'd developed a sore throat. The pool was supposed to be our redemption moment. Instead, an interior light fixture came loose while my kids were in the water. We immediately got them out and told the staff. Two hours later, the pool was still open and people were still swimming like nothing happened. Because apparently, here, safety hazards double as "added ambiance." Then there's the "pet relief" area--a 5x5 patch of grass that looked like a landmine field of other dogs' poop, with shards of glass scattered throughout. The bag dispensers were empty, not that I didn't bring my own. My poor service dog deserves better than that. And just when I thought I'd seen it all, I spotted exposed wires on the 5th floor, seemingly connected to a security camera. Nothing says "welcome" quite like loose electrical wiring. The one and only pleasant surprise? Breakfast. It was actually good--shockingly good, given everything else. Unfortunately, one decent meal doesn't erase the fact that this stay was dirty, unsafe, uncomfortable, and far below the standard Hilton promises, especially for Diamond members.

We asked about the policy and the answer was some IHG hotels do it. IT Isn't that much money but given the price of the hotel rooms it's just one more expense. It's unnecessary. We've stayed at IHG hotels worldwide. This is the first hotel outside of a major city that charges for parking. We won't be back.

Breakfast was okay - lots of sweet options. Eggs and bacon and toast, etc. were the only savory options. Potatoes and sausage would have been nice. It's a very colorful hotel with a bunch of modern features which was kind of neat. Overall, it was a fine place to stay but we'll probably stick with a more traditional Hilton next time due to our preference.

They have completely new everything- very modern and clean. Obviously, it's a renovated red roof- so the walls are very thin, and all the room access is from outside. But what they have done with the place is incredible! I read some iffy reviews about the breakfast- but I had a good experience. There were many more options than when I stayed across the street. Breakfast was available from 6-9, and it was refilled multiple times when I was there around 8.

The Quality Inn Card left in all the rooms GUARANTEES your satisfaction and tells you their rooms will be HOSPITAL QUALITY clean. Don't do it. And don't ever stay in a hospital with "that kind" of "clean". The person at the front desk, and the cleaning people are all you need to know about the hotel in Whytheville VA. We prayed we didn't bring any roaches home with us. Toilet was broken, my husband had to fix it. Sink was leaking, yet everything was made of plastic. No shampoo in the bottles in the shower attached to the wall. Bone dry. When we brought the filthy towels and empty shampoo bottle to the guy at the front desk, he handed us shampoo samples from a RED ROOF INN. Brand new TV - DID NOT WORK. Brand new phone - DID NOT WORK. Could not connect to WIFI. What would you do in an Emergency? Tried using our cellphones to call, and they kept hanging up on us. Contacted Corporate, someone in another country, and they just kept hanging up on us. Their SATISFACTION GUARANTEE is bogus. We were not satisfied, we were disgusted. And they would not offer a refund. We booked through CHOICE HOTELS, not a middle man. Yet they will not refund our money. All I can say to any traveler, if you're ok with staying in a $hithole, and don't care about cleanliness, bugs, or anything working other than a bed, then you are good to go. Based on the filthy room I would not dare attempt eating their breakfast. I would not want to even see that kitchen if the bedrooms were full of bugs. Just don't say you weren't warned. It was gross. And I have stayed in Econolodges, Super 8's and low budget places that were fantastic. This was just gross. And the way their customer service handled it was NOT "satisfactory". They just did not care at all whether or not we were satisfied, despite their GUARANTEE of satisfaction. I know there are people out there who like to sue places that don't meet their expectations, so if you are one of them, by all means go there and see for yourself. Move the ottoman out of the way and you will find all the dead bugs, and some live ones too. Look behind the beds, you will find bugs, dirt, grime, etc. $hit company, and after having tried to get recompensed for our inconvenience, still very unsatisfied.

(I believe this motel was recently touched up.) The furniture, wallpaper, and bathroom all looked new and fresh. It has modern amenities: flat screen tv, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot. Everything was clean, with a light smell of air freshener. Someone put effort into decorating the room, with artwork and tasteful fake flower arrangements. The outside was fancied up with Christmas lights and wreathes.

Often we come across state or county rest stops that are frankly horrible, seem dangerous, underlit, and trashy. I'm embarrassed for the US thinking a foreign traveler might stop at some of these and judge us as a whole by how bad, dirty, and run down some are. On the other hand, there are rest stops like these that are frankly beautiful places that feel more like a relaxing park and an actual place to rest from the stresses of the road. The restroom and lobby were clean, well kept, well stocked, and did not stink. There was a separate building for snacks and drinks away from the restrooms. I see this more in the Southeast than in Western states. I don't know why. Maybe that keeps the sugary distractions away from kids. Or maybe someone thought we needed to earn our treat after a few extra steps. I don't know, but for some reason I like it. Thank you to the staff who keep this place looking great, clean, and feeling safe.
