In search of breakfast on a Saturday morning in Portland at 9a. Tried a few places but many had lines out the door. After a few bites I knew I wouldn't be able to eat any more of the bacon or the potatoes. My husband noticed me not eating the bacon, my favorite, and told me to send it all back. When the bartender came to see how things were I explained to him and he was good to take the items that were over done and too salty to make it right!!! Came here on a Monday evening and was able to walk from our hotel. Inside has nice atmosphere to hang out and have a drink. Menu has a regular bar food and food was average. Nothing crazy. I ordered a french onion soup. It didn't come out with the other items because the server took it back because the cheese wasn't all the way melted. Andy's Old Port Pub is the definition of a classic pub experience! With bar seating and cozy side tables with some table games, it has that laid-back vibe perfect for a night out. What instantly drew me in was the awesome live music they had on Saturday night. The performers not only took requests but made it interactive and fun if you tipped or bought them a drink, it really added to the lively atmosphere. The staff were hustling, with a couple of bartenders working both the floor and bar. Be patient with them and they'll get to you, and when they do, they're incredibly friendly and make an effort to remember your name. Ryan, our bartender, was fantastic who is a true Mainer who made us feel right at home. The food and drinks rounded out the experience. I came for the Maine Mean Old Tom with its "nitro" kick, which kept me going through the night (might be too strong and bitter for some haha). The pulled pork poutine was the perfect snack for the party because of it was rich, flavorful, and satisfying. My only small wish for the dish was few more fries to soak up that incredible sauce! Stopped here the other night specifically for Maine Lobster week. They had their menu on the website and it looked really good but they said they weren't doing it. That was super disappointing. We ended up just getting the cheeseburger egg rolls and they were good. I have eaten here a couple times and it's decent but not amazing. Some of the prices are a little pricey. Stopped in Portland on the way back from a week in Sunday River. 9pm and starving, every restaurant we googled was closed and scales was under renovation. Perhaps it was due to the weather and call-outs but there was only one gentleman doing it all as far as behind the bar and table service. Overall, the food was just okay and pretty overpriced for what you got. The nachos still came will jalapeño even though I requested none. A side of fries never came. The chicken that went with the waffles was incredibly dry. Everyone tried a bite of my daughter's Mac n cheese/pulled pork wrap and we all agreed it wasn't great. The pizza was basic. The only thing that was pretty good was the French onion soup. For one adult, two teenagers and a 7 year old to each get a meal, one app to share amongst all of us and two sodas (two of us just had water), the bill was $130 after adding in a 20% tip. This was basic pub food at best. This was the only place that had blueberry pie on the menu (since we came in October which is out of season) - but OH MAN. we got it with a scoop of vanilla icecream and you can tell this pie was homemade. For food I ordered a chowder and roll (clam chowder and clam roll) and my girlfriend got the taco trio. It really saddens me to write this review, but the food that we got from Andy's Old Port Pub was just inexcusable. I honestly feel like we got scammed. In our quest to taste most local restaurants in Portland, we decided to give Andy's Old Port Pub a try. I called around 11am and placed an order to go. The gentleman on the other side of the line was kind and attentive. In fact, the reason I am not rating them with 1 star is because my interaction with the staff was pleasant. I arrived around 11:20am to get the food, tipped, and left, sadly without checking what I had just bought. I got home and I was shocked at what I saw. We ordered their lobster mac and cheese, a lobster "roll" (HUGE air quotes on roll, because it was NOT a roll), and their shrimp jalapeno appetizer. What we got was honestly embarrassing. Let's start with the lobster roll. The "roll" consisted of a piece of toast folded in half. While I understand some places do lobster rolls like this, this one was insanely small, completely bland and not worth the $18. The fries on the side were soggy and I almost threw them out. The lobster mac and cheese was as embarrassing. A very small portion (refer to photo) of boiled macaroni with some lobster thrown on top. We had to add spices to it and mix it all up in order to eat, since it was also very bland. At last, the (cold) jalapeno shrimp appetizer. It wasn't fresh, and it was just thrown together quickly. All in all, we paid $55 for this meal, not including tip. I am still in shock at the quality of the food in comparison to what we paid. $55 for a meal for two is not necessarily pocket change, so I definitely expected so much more. I am not sure if this place is a tourist trap, or if they just had a bad day, but I cannot in good faith recommend them to anyone. If anyone from their team reads this: please fix your recipes/kitchen situation. You are in a prime location and have so much potential. I had a delightful experience here. While we may have initially overwhelmed the wait staff (bachelor party of 15 w/reservations), they recovered nicely. Historic commission regulations prohibits the owners from having a more easily recognizable entrance off of Commercial Street; but once you make your way through the unremarkable steel door, things really change for the better! My wife and I were looking for a late night light supper on a Sunday and decided to try Andy's. The place was empty when we arrived, but the staff was attentive and we eagerly looked over the menu. I was already looking forward to a cup of New England Clam Chowder and my wife settled on a cup of their Macaroni and Cheese. The chowder was delicious! The potatoes were perfectly cooked (not mushy as if they had been sitting all day) and every bite had clams in the perfectly seasoned soup. I normally have to add some black pepper, but the chefs at Andy's nailed it. And then there was the macaroni and cheese. Offered plain or with added proteins like shrimp, chicken, or barbecue; my wife went old school and just had the base. Perfectly al dente pasta in a rich creamy cheese sauce it was some of the best we have ever had. In talking with the owner we learned the Béchamel sauce is flavored with sharp Cheddar, Parmesan, and Blue cheese. I pride myself on my homemade macaroni and cheese but mine takes a back seat to this. We finished our meal with a slice of their blueberry pie. Sweet Maine Wild Blueberries in a flaky crust with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to garnish the plate it was a tasty finish to this surprisingly great repast. In talking with the owner we could hear his pride in the quality of the chefs that work at this "public house", the staff that are dedicated to this type of public service, and his love of the fishermen and other locals that make up the heart of their clientele. I ordered a beer (a locally brewed craft beer) and an Oyster Po'Boy. The Po'Boy was outstanding -- in fact it was as good most (but not all) of the Po'Boys I had in New Orleans.
