It only takes one conversation for him to remember you. They ask that you come broken so God can repair you, don't wait until you are perfect to seek him. This man delivers the word of God every time. The church is open EVERYDAY so what ever you are facing you do not have to face it alone. Come see for yourself, I promise that you will feel the presence of the Lord. This ministry is there to reach every age group! My 16yo daughter commented that we should visit one day for Sunday service, as it is less than ten miles from home. I expected there to be an offering, but in the beginning of the service, they had two baskets. Bishop Evans said one was for the guest preacher, and the other for the ministry. He then said we needed to put the same amount in each basket. Umm, say what now? I've never heard a pastor tell the congregation how to give! I had a $10 bill and a $5 bill. I put the former in the basket for the guest, since she was the reason I was there, and nothing in the other. The guest preacher was awesome, but when she was done, SHE announced another offering for herself! Needles to say, I did not give. I mean, I thought that's what the earlier offering was for! Then, Bishop Evans says "if you didn't sow a seed, you should have", and words to the effect that your blessings are dependent on your giving. I was outdone! And to top it all off, there was no altar call. I guess they were too concerned with folks's money than their souls. Even my daughter said, after we left, that therein lies the reason a lot of people don't go to church, especially mega churches - because they think they're all about the money. I'm thankful that at my home church, Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, we pray for those who want to give but can't. I was disappointed in my experience at Bethany. So much so, that Jesus Christ himself would have to be preaching before I would visit again!

I was 16, and my church youth group was scheduled to attend a service at a Black Baptist Church, in West Philly. I had much anxiety, about the excursion. My travels into the city were limited and lets face it, West Philly had/has a reputation. Id seen enough buddy comedies to know what happens when a group of white people walk into a room full of black people. Sudden silence, eyes focused, distrust, scorn. Would this happen to my group and I, as we entered the church? Conversely, other pop culture sources told me the experience would be a hoot. Impassioned sermons, uplifting gospel choir, can I get an Amen? Needless to say, I went into the experience with a healthy mixture of caution and curiosity. Upon entering their church, the negative perceptions I had, instantly melted away. Never have I felt so welcome, in being out of my comfort zone. We were greeted warmly , from the youngest of children, to the seniors, whose faces were wrinkled with smile and laugh lines. I dont know why I let the negative perception guide me, this was a church after all...people of God. Hadnt my own church, reacted the same way to obvious strangers? And in this case, the friendliness was definitely genuine. Its often easy to tell the difference. We sat in the pew, dead center of the sanctuary, the first stage of anxiety washed away. I was now looking forward to the pomp and circumstance, of the Black Baptist service. My first observation disappointed me. I was looking forward to a Gospel Choir but all I saw was a teen at a drum set (already cooler than the boring Lutheran Organ) and a few other teens. Oh well, another stereotype busted. The service started slowly, a few announcements followed by singing a hymn. I was still lingering in my disappointment about the choir, when the back doors burst open and a long line of clapping and singing Choir members came through. I cant describe the goosebumps, I recieved, when the Choir took its place. This was exactly what I hoped for. One thing we were warned about was that the services here can last up to 3 hrs. I was used to the Lutheran liturgy. Stand up-sing-sit down-pray- stand-sing-listen-commune-sing-done. All done in a boring 45 minutes. While the Lutheran 45mins often seems like 3hrs, the 3hr service at a black baptist church seemed like 45min. Some highlights... We were surprised when members came up to speak, give testimonials and then give little plugs for their respective businesses. Back then, after the service, we suburban teens debated whether or not the little "commercials" belonged in a church service. As an adult, I look back and see how important community is, in the inner city, and how those little ads, were necessary to the survival of that community. Pretty much everyone who spoke, did so in an impassioned, inspirational manner, which transfixed my maliable mind. None more than the Pastor, who unleashed a sermon so passionate and heartfelt that, ( I kid you not) an honest to goodness nurse, came out to put a cape around him and sat him down until he calmed down. Anyone who has seen footage of a James Brown concert would know what Im talking about. This really happened. This is another stereotype, but it also happened. The crowd was part of the experience. From different points in the audience, you would hear constant audible affirmations such as, " Yes Jesus!" " Testify!" " Lord have mercy!". These were not attention seeking members. I felt their genuine joy, and while I was too reserved to copy, I knew what they were shouting about. To say the least, this experience was about as uplifting spiritually as you can get. I returned a few more times, I brought my girlfriend/fiance, and later took my kids here. The Lutheran ( or insert christian offshoot) liturgy has its place, but it never moved me. The people at the Baptist service experience real joy, and its catching. For those few small hours, there was no thought of skin color or cultural differences. Can I get an Amen?

(10:00am - 8:00pm). The grounds are maintained by volunteers and donations. We had a great time today, the kids enjoyed it. Kayaking was fun (I like the island in the middle of the lake). Nice set-up all around. Everyone was chill, no riff-raff here. They have: - Spring-fed cedar lake. It is very clean, they test the water weekly. - Sandy beach (well groomed) - Lifeguards on duty - Beach volleyball court, horseshoe pits and basketball. - They have free canoes and kayaks (life vests included) - Picnic areas - Hiking trail (around a mile or so) - Gas grills - Adirondack style chairs and beach umbrellas - Many shady spots provided by the trees - Bathroom facility - Birthday parties are okay as long as the group doesn't exceed 20, 25 max. "Minors under the age of 16 may not be dropped off and must be accompanied by a responsible adult. CampFAC is not a daycare facility and will not be held responsible for the well-being of its guests. The use of ALCOHOL and TOBACCO is strictly prohibited. Foul language and lewd or reckless behavior will not be tolerated". They don't have a snack bar so feel free to pack a cooler and bring some grub. If you want, bring beach chairs, umbrellas and sand toys with you. Early bird gets the worm as far as picking your spot (tables/chairs, etc.).

Pastors…read moreand all the crew are nice and do a great job at helping bring a holiness to the worship, they also have a free coffee bar with bartenders that Starbucks has nothing on, they are also very genuine and loving I even shared a concern with them about a bowl of kids crackers that are left by the coffee bar for the children as my child is grain-intolerant and I usually have hard time keeping him away from that (parents of toddlers with food allergies know the struggle is real!) and I suggested they replace it with something healthier like bananas and within few minutes the crackers were gone! I can't explain how appreciated that made me feel and how much I was grateful for my church family for looking after my children, this is not only a church but a home.

The church is bright and has great antique/vintage looking windows for photos before the ceremony. I didn't even need to use a flash there was so much light. There was no point in which the ceremony was dull and it could not have gone any smoother than it did. The church offers great hospitality and welcomes many of those who are trying to turn their lives around. Location is a little dangerous...but so is Christianity.
