I recently moved to Frederick from North Carolina. I was really concerned I would be having to shop for my grocerys at a Walmart or Safeway. I was super excited to come across this place. It's a nice small quaint market that I feel very comfortable coming to. I love the juice bar and deli section and love all the choice of local farm fresh meets and produce! The only down side is that it is pricey and the juice bar is lacking wheat grass. All in all though I would highly recommend it. All of the staff is very friendly as well... I love coming here for great organic produce selection and all-natural toilettries/beauty items. The best part about common market is their cafe area. The have a hot bar with an awesome selection of fresh, clean, and healthy food. They also make great sandwiches and smoothies. It is perfect place to eat healthy on your lunchbreak and at the same time pick up any grocery items you need. They also have a water dispenser to fill up water jugs. They have a lot of bulk foods like nuts, granolas, beans etc. I have not been impressed by their seafood department- the past two times I got fish there it was not good. read more

Common Market is a lovely, community oriented grocery store that focuses on local and national products to give a wide variety. They are always friendly and provide great customer service. I really appreciate their fish department and in-store food service counter, providing custom drinks and sandwiches on the go. They have a great hot/cold food bar as well! It seems to be a smaller, local Whole Foods. I enjoyed walking around the place as it is a nice alternative to the big chains with similar selection. The prices are a little high so expect to pay more but you are paying for something local. The cafeteria is pretty good as we tried wraps and lentil soup. They have a build your own wrap for under $7 which isn't a bad deal. The soup was very tasty as well. While Frederick is fortunate to have multiple choices for cooks who prefer fresh, local, and raw ingredients, the Common Market (a.k.a. the Frederick Cooperative) is the superior choice for the person who is looking for an everyday place for food made by producers they can trust! We joined the co-op a few years back, just after they moved to their expanded location in Evergreen Square. The advantage of membership include occasional discounts on products and services, as well the potential for rebates on purchases in profitable times. But mostly we just enjoy shopping there and wanted to be part of their continued success. While most supermarkets have expanded their choices of organic and natural foods, few if any compare to the carefully selected products you find at the co-op. This is especially true when you extend beyond the usual packaged goods. For example, local farm-raised buffalo and ostrich meat, raw farmstead cheeses, and fresh-baked, whole grain breads (including vegan varieties). Eco-friendly bulk food options include cooking oils, granolas/trail mixes, cooking and medicianl herbs, and even fair trade coffees -- all of which encourage you to re-use your own containers as opposed to disposable packages. However, the main reason we shop at the co-op is for their fresh, local, and (mostly) organic produce. They only stock produce that is seasonal, which (according to the handy chart they've posted) may mean no squash in the spring and no asparagus in the winter. Bottom line -- If they are unable to secure a supply of fresh and sustainable produce from a reliable (preferably local) source, they are likely to choose not to stock the item at all. So this is an ideal place for locavores who are looking to reduce the carbon footprint of their diet. While we do not often take advantage of the prepared foods, we've had a few meals from the chef case that were top notch. And the juice bar is always a fun treat that gives you a burst of natural energy (and makes me want to by my own juicer!). We consider ourselves fortunate to not only have a local co-op, but to be able to afford to support them on a regular basis. My diet is more healthy and considerably more eco-friendly as a result, which makes it well worth every (extra) penny (or three) that we've spent. read more

Their prices are reasonable considering the types and selection of foods. MOMs is its closest competitor, has much of what the Common Market offers; however, it's missing the place to sit down for lunch or a snack. read more

I love coops. They have a certain level of care and awesomeness that you can only find at Wegmans, My Organic Market, and possibly Trader Joes. I've been here twice. The first time the crew and I wandered around. It has a good selection of organic food and holistic items, friendly staff, and an awesome in-store eatery. I could easily find all my organic staples with some new finds as well. The in-store eatery has been the hook for me. I went and wanted to try a turkey and brie panini sandwich. With a French vanilla coffee with soy milk. I was being adventurous about the soy milk. And I normally don't drink coffee either, makes me sleepy. But the sandwich and the coffee was amazing! Like I never had a sandwich or had a real cup of coffee. I had their coffee on the brain for a month before I caved in and bought the same combo again. Again, just delicious. I browsed their magazine section and I like their variety. I would say they have more variety than Whole Foods and is in definite competition with My Organic Market. But I like shopping here and it's a place to enjoy shopping for organic food and to support the local area. read more

I've spent the last 6 months working steps away from the Common Market, and have been a patron for the last 9 years. Aside from the grocery, this is a great place to get lunch. Their salad bar is really good and they offer numerous pre-packaged noodles, sushi, sandwiches, etc. They also have a few options behind their counter for hot dishes and array of juices. what sets the common market apart from corporate chains (ahem whole foods), is the staff (who are the best), community commitment, consumer education and knowing this is a co-op. They have great produce (some items that are not found else where), and keep their produce seasonal. The bulk and dry grocery are pretty extensive and not too pricey. read more

I love the common market! I just moved to the area and prefer this over the Mom's in frederick. They have a hot bar and salad bar and fresh organic juices!! Which are always amazing: some favorites are the Ekto Cooler juice and the Vegan Club wrap! They have such a variety of fresh amazing food- love coming here and basically come 3-4 times a week after working out at sport & health next door. I moved from Bethesda where I had a co-op as well as Whole Foods and I was super scared I wouldn't be able to find as many organic places. So happy to have found Common Market! I went there for lunch with a couple of friends yesterday. I didn't know how it worked at first, but a staff behind the counter at the smoothies was very helpful. She explained to me that I could just get whatever from the food bar and pay for it at the cashier's and if I wanted a juice or a smoothie, I can order from her but I still have to pay for that at the cashier's as well. I got the spicy Thai soup, some salad, and a Berry Blast smoothie. All of it was good, and again...I finished everything! No leftovers for me, so that means it was really delicious! However, it was a bit more costly than what I'm used to but it's all healthy food, and no junk or processed stuff. It's a good place for anyone who wants a tasty meal! read more

Common Market (are they changing to a larger location soon???) and nearby My Organic Market (both on Rt. 28/Buckeystown Pike in Frederick MD) are great (nearly entirely) organic grocery stores with cafes. Plenty of parking at Common Market & wheelchair accessible bathrooms (true for MOM's, too). Although organic markets tend to be a bit pricey, I think the pricing is fair (both places often have sales), and your better health is worth it. GO TO THEIR CAFE & grab a delicious sandwich (like the 'Caprese' or 'Mediterranean Wrap') or an excellent hot or cold drink (like their incredible berry blast or mocha-banana smoothies...Mmmmm...) While you're enjoying your snack/meal, wonder around either grocery store and pick up something healthy (both have prepared sandwiches & sides) for tonight's dinner...share with family & friends. I have only been here once but I was blown away by this place, it is the cutest and most organized little place. Although I've heard it is a bit pricey. I didn't get a chance to actually shop here as my friend and I were stopping by for lunch. When my friend suggested this place I was a bit hesitant thinking, "oh we'll just get some wraps, how good could they be?" Oh you silly little snowflake you. I couldn't have been more wrong. I ordered a brown rice tortilla wrap with chicken, basil parmesan spread, spinach, tomato, and swiss cheese. It came warm and oh my god was it the best wrap I have ever tasted. I don't know what they do but this wrap was to die for. It was packed full of fresh flavor and all the ingredients sang in perfect harmony together. I have to applaud myself on the most excellent array of ingredient choices. I have been dying to take my boyfriend here because I'm prepared for him to be blown away too. I can't even recall what my friend ordered because I was too busy going "OHMYGAHHH this is so good" over my wrap. We also got little gluten free cakes that come individually sized, they were pretty good (I had the birthday cake) and definitely superior for a gluten free option. I cannot wait to get another wrap and to explore this little gem of a grocery store a little further. read more

Best place to eat in Frederick is at their food court. Good and heathy! I love the Common Market for finding good organic food and house products. It is not a bargain store, so one has to have a budget going in there. It is tempting to buy a ton of stuff you don't need because it is good and healthy. I went in to buy dinner, while on a date night and somehow spent $65 on stuff! Good grief. The staff have never impressed me. This does not mean they are rude or unfriendly. They just have never reached out to me as a customer and asked if I need help, or just said a quick "hello and thanks for shopping." I'd say MOMS off of 85 does a better job with connecting with their clients. But, this place is convenient and also has a great food court. read more

I just stopped by here for the first time today and absolutely loved it. The produce selection wasn't huge, like you'd see at a supermarket, but that's to be expected. I found the organic prices here were pretty on par with organic prices at other stores. I've had a hard time finding organic broccoli that actually looks and tastes good, and Common Market was the only place where I've been able to find it. I was a bit disappointed with their selection of organic meats though, I've seen more organic variety at Wegman's and Giant. Other than that, I was really impressed. I'll definitely be back. I found things that are generally not available in other grocery stores and to top it all it has a great smoothie, sandwich, salad cafe and also an olive bar! We are members here and I love the food and the staff. This is the place to go for healthy, organic food. Is it cheap? No, but I feel like it's more reasonably priced then other similar places like Whole Foods and MoM's organic (I haven't compared prices, it just feels that way to me). They are also very open to feedback and change things up regularly. The produce is fresh and they have a good variety. The staff is also very knowledgeable about different items, so if something is new to you, they will explain it to you and even let you taste it. They have homemade Kombucha you can sample, a bulk/bin area with nuts and flours and snacks. Even though the store isn't large, I feel like there is a good selection of items. If you are gluten free, like me, there are plenty of selections throughout the store. Their salad bar and hot bar have fantastic food. I often go there for lunch and there is pretty much always at least one entree that is gluten free. I love their roasted veggies and cold Kale salad. They also have organic lunch meats and prepared salads to go. Their is a smoothie/Juice bar also with many selections. Their meats and seafood are delicious and fresh. I love their scallops when they have them. If you like organic health care products, like lotions, shampoos, essential oils, vitamins, etc. They have a large selection of these also and staff that can answer all your questions. I go here usually once a week and highly recommend it. You do not have to be a member to shop here, but if you like the store, I recommend supporting the Co-Op and joining. read more

This is the best place to shop for organic food and health products. I started shopping here looking for fresh grass-fed/pasture-raised meat and dairy products. After seeing their wide variety of organic produce, including local produce when in season, I decided to make this my grocery store. Along with fresh, organic meat, dairy, and produce, they have a wide selection of natural health care products, including toothpaste, mouth wash, and even natural toothbrushes! It seems everyone in this store has a more pleasant, patient attitude, even the customers. It's bizarre, but in a good way! I eat/shop here a couple days a week. The shopping selection is good, especially the bulk section. Prices are... well, people, it's an organic market, and average for that, which means kinda' pricey. ($4 for a chocolate bar? Seriously? Just because there's a gorilla printed on the front?) Still, it's the best organic thing going in Frederick. As for the deli... I have mixed feelings about it. The pre-made sandwiches are ok on price, but ask them to make one for you on the spot, with ingredients you choose, and the price skyrockets. As do the deli workers' attitudes. They're never outright rude, but they start getting visibly peevish and irritable if they make a mistake and you call them on it. But honestly, for an $8 sandwich, with no sides, don't I deserve perfection? One major beef I have with the place: Much of their grocery stock (from which they prepare their deli items) is as processed and complicated as any of the crap you'd get at a regular grocery store, only it's all processed and complicated from organic ingredients. So, ok, it's one step up from the usual grocery store rubbish, but is it really properly called "organic"? I know that the popular organic industry perceives no identity paradox whatsoever in mass-produced, sprayed-with-Mother-Earth-pesticide, vegetable-juice-extract-colored, boxed-and-frozen, shipped-from-the-other-side-of-the-country "organic". But I certainly do. From this perspective, the bread selection is particularly disappointing... In sum: Don't let the all-organic label on the store lull you into an unjustified organo-ecstasy as you roam the aisles. Keep alert and read ingredients. read more

It is with deep regret that I must rewrite my review based on their many changes. Maybe I am the only Vegan that has noticed, but I doubt it - The Common Market is dwindling away all of their Vegan options. Yes, they're still a natural market and yes there are still Vegan products there. HOWEVER, I have noticed it has became a carnivore's world in that place - and that's not the common market I used to know and love. It truly makes me sad because I go here frequently and their baked Vegan goods have turned to crap, what little options they have left anyway. Also, the food they actually weigh and sell is not really with Vegans in mind. It truly makes me sad, because there used to be a fine medium at this market where carnivores and Vegans could happily coexist. Not anymore. /: read more

Over the last few years, the selection of product has dwindled and prices have skyrocketed. There has been a change within the company's values - they are no longer an owner-driven co-op, but operate more like a corporate grocery store - which would be fine if they were transparent about it. It astounds me that more people are not aware of the Common Market not sticking to their core values and their ultimate shift toward a bigger, more "conventional" organic food market. Just another Whole Foods, except employees are treated extremely poorly. Additionally, gone are the days that you recognize faces at the Common Market - every time I shop, there is someone new behind the deli counter, in the produce department, behind the service desk, at the registers. Many long-standing, "tenured" employees (for lack of a better term) have left in the last two years. I wonder why no one else seems to notice. read more

This place is awesome! We traveled here on Christmas Eve to get a Knotty Boy Dread product (the only place within 50 miles of Winchester VA that carries their products). We decided to do some grocery shopping while we were there. The produce section is beautiful! The bulk section is HUGE and has lots of yummy vegan chocolate snacks (dark chocolate haystacks, dark chocolate pretzels, etc). They even had bulk honey and some other liquids. They carry tons of soy-free vegan products, including SOY-FREE MISO!!!! Do you have any idea how hard that is to find? I never even saw it in a store the whole two years I lived right outside San Francisco. AND they carry Columbia Gorge Meyer Ginger Lemonade, which I used to drink a bottle of every single day and haven't seen anywhere since CA. They really had so many exciting products that I can't cover all of them here. If you're vegan and you go here, at least buy one thing: Foodies Artichoke Burgers in the frozen aisle. Best vegan burger I've ever had. At the check-out, the employees were all super nice and opened up another register when they saw a couple people standing in line. After checking out, we went over to the juice bar and ordered some drinks. The only thing that bummed me out about their smoothies was that the only non-dairy yogurt option they had was soy, which I can't have. My smoothie was delicious without it though. I got something like raspberries, peaches, mangoes, orange juice, and rice milk. My wife ordered a latte and enjoyed it a lot. This place makes me wish I lived in Frederick, or at least closer to it. This used to be my favorite grocery store in the Frederick area, but they recently renovated the hot bar, and suddenly there are minimal if any vegan/vegetarian options. Their grocery selection is still pretty good, but I'm disappointed to lose one of my favorite lunch places. I think it's important for a company that prides itself in being sustainable to stand by their claims, and as a co-op shareholder, I don't feel especially comfortable with my money supporting animal agriculture. Alas, Roots Market is almost an hour away, so Common Market makes for a mostly acceptable stand-in. read more

I wouldn't have guessed that the town my U of Maryland friends once derided as "Fredneck" would have the best natural foods option between Ithaca and DC. But the cramped lil' co-op I delivered to about 8 years ago is all growed up into one of the better full service co-op markets in the northeast. Deli selections are limited (for those traveling thru & looking for cafe food) but what they have is excellent. Way to go Fredneck! read more
