Commonwealth Family Dentistry is by far the best dental office around. I came to them two years ago from another practice after being frustrated with costs and quality. The dentists on staff are excellent especially with timid patients. I specifically like my dentist's assistant, Beth! She made my experience all the better. I was incredibly nervous and she kept me calm. I felt my old dentist was solely based on the dollar which made the quality of care poor. I feel I was assaulted with a dental drill by the tech at this dentist office who likes to talk about her Lexi's car . When the dentist allowed her to help put a cap on my uncovered tooth that had been just received a root canal, she already knew WITHOUT the cap the tooth was very sensitive to pain because the dentist already tested it after I came to the appointment just to see the sensitivity. When She proceeded to go into my mouth I'm wondering what she doing (he already tested it, and she knows it's painful . So, (without the cap to put on my tooth) she used the drill and said "I want you to see something " she took the drill and hit my naked tooth with that instrument the dentist did and then said "(you can get somebody else if you want)." She hit that uncovered tooth with the drill so fast I almost jumped out the seat it hurt so bad. I read in these reviews where the Doctor or hygienist used anesthetic on someone's gums while scaling back their teeth? I was not ever offered pain relief for scaling. I was told "all the patients took the pressure and pain!". They tried to do my scaling by digging with a sharp instrument in my gums until I screamed in pain. The hygienist thought it was a joke because I was so upset . They did not numb me nor warn me about the pain of having to go into my gums with a sharp instrument. I believe I was assaulted with dental instruments and then made a joke of . I am afraid to go back there after those experiences to tell them my dentures (they made) hurt so bad and look so bad I can't wear them almost not at all. Food gets stuck in the tooth that had the root canal because it's indented and not smooth. They kept trying to get $100.00 out of me at this dentist office. Kept saying you owe us $100.00 but never told me why. I never understood anyway because My dental care was totally insured . So, they finally backed off asking me. But, I believe I was being billed for something I didn't get. When they figured they couldn't just take my money without explanations they just said forget about it. Absolutely the worst experience of my Life. They over charge and under deliver. They also magically made an almost $700 cash payment disappear. They have been my dentist for at least 12 years, if not more. I've always had a great experience. The hygienists know I have sensitivity when cleaning and go the extra mile to use numbing gel. Dr. Faruk has a great sense of humor. He is definitely one of the best. read more

I moved to the area in December and was referred to Commonwealth Dentistry. The next available appointment was in mid-May, so I took it because my last dental appointment was back in July, and I missed my December appointment due to the move. I scheduled what i thought would be my bi-yearly cleaning and XRay as normal because they had my old records from July, but that's not what happened. They had to establish me as a patient. No cleaning would be done. How is this possible? Why would they not do a cleaning? Of course, they determined I needed a treatment plan with extra yearly cleanings. Again, if that is true, why would you not do the cleaning? To top it off, they couldn't get me an appointment at the colonial heights location until November, putting my cleaning off again. The exam rooms are tiny, the walls are scuffed up, the dental equipment is old, and appointments are few and far between. When checking out, I asked if my insurance is going to cover todays visit as it not my normal cleaning and the extra visits they deem necessary. She stated "yes you have 2500 to use this year." Of course, what she left out is I will need to pay 20% out of pocket. Now, I am wondering if this establishing a new patient is the norm. What if I dont like one place and go to another. Makes me wonder as this happened at the doctors office I choose as well. read more

I'm reviewing on the behalf of my toddler. One star for getting an appointment for a new patient fairly quickly...under two weeks. Other star for a clean office. Negative one star for accepting pediatric patients in the first place. No kid books/magazines, kid size furniture, or toys in the lobby. I was THAT mom with a toddler in an obviously adult office. He wasn't kept busy by the infomercial on the tv. In the room, maybe a colorful poster on the wall? Maybe a booster chair for him? Negative star for chair side manner. He's a kid. Talk to him like a kid. Also, know what he's there for! The dentist thought he was there for trauma. He was there for a cleaning. Read a chart? Negative star for being a rip off. I made an appointment for a cleaning. They did not clean his teeth. They said that the first visit was just so he would feel comfortable. The dentist didn't even look in his mouth. The hygienist tried to poke around and said she couldn't see any cavities. He wasn't screaming or throwing a tantrum. He was in a good mood so I don't see why they couldn't at least do a decent exam. We get an exam once every six months. Now we have to wait to get an actual cleaning. For the kiddos...definitely a pass. read more

Horrible. I work in health care so I have a bit of experience of how clinics are supposed to work. We went in to schedule an appointment with the front desk, showed them our dental insurance card and were told they accepted the insurance. An appointment was made. When we went in for our appointment, we were told by the staff that our insurance is not accepted (AFTER THEY GET THE X-RAY DONE). The clinic staff then argues with us regarding the payments. We ask them to cancel the appointment. They finally agree and told us we were not responsible for the invoice. Despite writing and signing on the invoice that we are not responsible for the visit they have the audacity to still bill the insurance company and LIE that they provided a "Comprehensive Oral Exam." The level of insurance fraud this clinic committed with just that one visit is reprehensible. Avoid at all cost. read more

Our family has been going to Commonwealth Dentistry in Colonial Heights for perhaps ten years, and I have no complaints. When I had a crown fall off a tooth from a much earlier procedure done at a different practice, the situation was repaired promptly. When operations more complicated than routine X-rays and cleanings are required, the explanations are clear and options are given. Today, I had X-rays and a cleaning done. The dental assistant and the periodontal hygienist were charming and efficient. The X-ray device is small and the procedure is surprisingly quick. Dr. Dixon checked my teeth, tongue and lymph nodes for any irregularities. The office manager who processed my payment was pleasant and there was no pain involved. Do NOT go if you are military. They will tell you they accept insurance then bill the amount to you personally. We called and asked if they accept, when we got there we asked again and both times they said we do. Then received a a bill for over $1,400.00. I personally feel like they scammed us and after asking around I was told they do this quite often. Even if you call now they will still tell you they accept our insurance. Have been calling for over a month to resolve and still getting no results. They keep saying they will call back but never do or will take a message for a manager will find the answer. My wife and I used Commonwealth Dentistry for a couple of years without any problems until my wife had her wisdom teeth removed. The quote was $150, but we were charged $750. My wife called to question why the price was so far off from the quote, the billing secretary asked my wife if she knew what the word "estimate" meant. Needless to say we switched to a different dentist where they just discovered that Commonwealth Dentistry missed two roots during my last root canal there. This place is pathetic. read more

All about the money.You can be sitting there with your abscess tooth throbbing and they will not touch it until tell them how you will be paying them in full. In addition, my son has had to get 3 of his fillings redone because they weren't filled deep enough and decay was forming underneath. I have to get 3 fillings redone as well and a crown redone that has cracks in it. So glad we switched practices! read more

I would give it a minus if I could. My 12 year old daughter was a patient there and was going to get a filling. The dental assistant came out and ask me if I wanted her to have gas or shots. I figured the gas would be easier for her even though she had never had a problem with going to the dentist or having dental work done. She received her filling everything was fine. I then received a bill for 150.00 for the gas. My insurance did not pay for it. When I called the dental office I told them if I would have known that my insurance would not have paid for it I would not have gone that route. I had a very bad experience with this office, VERY RUDE!! If they were going to offer the service they should have let me know that there was going to be an extra fee for it. They have lost 2 patients over this and I would never recommend them to anyone. read more

I am always treated like a professional guest at this practice. They are fabulous. The dentists are so wonderful and I have never had an issue. If you have a weekend problem and I have it was handled courteously and professionally..they even came into the office to help me and my tooth! I was soo grateful. My husband is had difficult childhood experiences with dental and was reluctant but they have won his trust and admiration. He has never been "hurt" there. They always make certain he is numb! I especially appreciate the attention to detail devoted to explaining 'why' the procedures they suggested were necessary, and the concern that was shown over my out-of-pocket expenses. As far as going to the dentist goes. There's no place I would rather go to than Commonwealth Dentistry. Their staff is A++ all the way. Always on schedule and I leave out feeling so fresh and so clean. The best part is I trust their staff to properly diagnose any issues I may have. Sell you a service and not keep up with the plan. OUTRAGEOUS pricing and SLOWWWWW service and return calls. My husband and I signed up for their "savings plan" . I needed major work done and waited a month for the estimate then had to save the over $5,000 dollars to do it so called to make an appointment and had to be told that there were "changes" to the plan and we had to see if they would even except it to do the work. Waited another month for them to call back and to find out that they would except their original estimate BUT they had not billed us for the " savings plan" for three months. When we ask about, and waiting 2 months for a callback, canceling they want an almost $350 dollar balance for "services". I talked with my husband and said that he should go ahead and get the "free cleaning" that came with what we paid for and was informed by the office that he needed an $800 cleaning so that the free cleaning was not possible. Meantime I had to go to another dentist to have a tooth pulled and paid WAY less for one extraction then the whole experience with this place.We were also informed that they had not taken payments again in two months, we agreed originally to monthly, and that they were no longer offering this program. So wait what we either pay $350 to get out of it or we pay $392 to continue and NOT receive any of the benefits that we were offered when signing up for the NOW non- existent " savings program". read more

They put a crown on my cracked tooth - at the time we didn't know it was cracked but I complained of extreme sensitivity and pain and they slapped a crown on it anyway and did not seal it, leaving a lip. A year later still in pain I went to my new dentist and they found decay under it and sent me for a root canal for the pain and the endodontist found it cracked in 3 places. Well hear I am another 2 years later and the other crown they did for me, which I thought was actually good, has a cavity under it because yet again, it was not sealed correctly and a lip was left. So now I have to have the crown replaced because of their incompetence. Oh, and the dentist I saw also gave me Novocain while watching TV and went through a tendon in my mouth.
