What a horrible experience went down there for green beans which were on sale they didn't have any so they sold me the most expensive sugar peas I've ever seen at almost $18 a kilo when I talked to the manager, she was very short and not at all receptive and rather rude fortunately the cashier was clearly not trained by the manager helped me pick through the bags of rotting snap peas looking for the best ones. I was a loyal shopper here for 15+ years. However, the Crowfoot branch treated my mom like total crap, accusing her of stealing without any evidence, being too familiar and personal and getting right up in her face during Covid. The last straw was when she was in a hurry for an important Dr appointment and searching for a supplement. While I checked out our shopping, she frantically searched for said item, saw a staff and asked them for help. They ignored her and ran off, reappeared then helped someone else. While at the checkout, the staff there asked the supervisor if she should help but the supervisor shockingly told her not to help! My mom returned, frustrated at the terrible service and was understandably upset. The supervisor shut her down then banned her the next day! We avoided this location for five years, one day I peeked in and noticed things were rearranged, believing this meant change of management, I suggested she try shopping there again. Lo and behold she was still banned. But I was told I can still come in. Which I did reluctantly, I felt nervous and kept to myself. One day I was in a hurry to get something, the supervisor said 'We close in 10 min!' I kept walking, she said 'Did you hear me?' I said, not at all rudely, 'Yep.' and continued to hastily search for what I needed. Shortly after this, next time I came in I was told I am now banned, and when we went to the downtown branch they banned us there too without explanation! I called customer service and emailed them. They never even bothered to get back to me. I'm shocked and disgusted, I've never felt so hurt or offended before. I work in customer service and we would never dream of abusing and discriminating against loyal customers like this with no good reason and after said customers did nothing but act civilly. I have told all my friends and colleagues and they are shocked and disgusted and will not shop there anymore. I encourage everyone to boycott this disgusting hateful place. read more

Expect false advertising! A one-time mistake is forgivable. Community Natural Foods promises one thing in writing like 'A free gift on your birthday' and 'Get 20% off any Community Naturals grab & go items!', plural not singular, yet then when in the store they offer NO free gift and 20% on only a single item! Also, hit or miss on prepared food. A sandwich made one of us sick (threw up from food poisoning) and 1/3 of the salad had to be thrown out because leaves had turned in the bottom. You sick fucks took away everything good about community health. The salad bar, the (good) pizza and last of all you changed the burritos. I taking a bite into my bean burrito with extra cheese was the biggest letdown of my entire life and my dissatisfaction is immeasurable. I do not believe I received an ounce of cheese alongside my bean burrito which would be redeemable if the beans actually had flavour, however that was seemingly not the case. First time into the south location of Community Natural Foods and... I like the layout more than its downtown location. Everything seems a whole lot easier to see... and is it just me? Or are the aisles wider? Community does a great job of providing a list of ingredients on the foods they prepare. So when you're headed to a potluck where the majority of folks don't eat meat, this is mighty helpful. And when you bring your leftovers home and your best friend is hungry... she'll be able to tell whether that 7 grain salad will prompt her food allergies or not. Also, I figured I hadn't done enough to save the planet for one day, so I bought a dark chocolate bar with raspberries in it. 10% of sales go to save endangered animals. Guess what? No dairy went into the making of said chocolate bar. So dairy free folks who need a chocolate fix... come save the planet with me! read more

I love this place for shopping - the food buffet is limited but lately the food is much better than it has been. However.....I feel you really should consider hiring a proper chef of sorts for quality control of what you serve, for instance I often buy food from the buffet that is not edible (my opinion) - today I brought home some steam collard greens that were very tough and chewy, and some spiced cauliflower that was so heavily peppered with Cayenne I couldn't eat more than one, and I like spicy food. Last week I bought roasted vegetables : so heavily peppered with black pepper. Honestly, you really should TASTE the food you serve before you serve it. Let the flavours of the ingredients be the taste you go for, not piles of pepper to make it "taste good". Glad you have the buffet, hope it continues, it's a huge help in a hurry, but just make sure the food is good enough to eat. read more

I'm a huge fan of community natural foods. For the longest time, I preferred the downtown location because of the salad bar and hot vegetarian buffet. The downtown location is also closer to my work. 61 Ave SW location is definately closer to my home and recently,. they have also come forward with a salad bar and vegetarian buffet. Score!!! My favorite items on the hot buffet is the samosas with a dab of mango chutney. I also really enjoy their chick pea curry and their vegetarian chili. The salad bar is extremely diverse, all organic and also includes a wide range of grain salads. Community Natural Foods has done an extremely good job at making healthy, organic food extremely palatable. read more

When I first started shopping here, I was overwhelmed by the selection and how little my dollar would stretch here compared to places like Safeway or Sobey's. What kept me coming back was their friendly staff, the variety of vegan and handmade goods that I can't find anywhere else and most recently, the hot buffet. Not to mention, yes, buying organic can be a little on the steep side (and I'm not convinced that it's super 100% better for you or better tasting) but CNF's prices seem to be lower than their Organic Market counterparts (i.e., Planet Organic, Amaranth, Farmers Markets and those health food shops in the mall). The staff here is also knowledgeable without being preachy (well, there was one instance where a staff member tried to warn me about the ills of meat - and props to him for his enthusiasm. How would he know I haven't eaten meat in almost 18 years?). I can ask them about this supplement or that and get a direct answer that I can verify later with Dr. Google. They also carry a sunblock that I can actually use without developing contact dermatitis. Which means I can actually enjoy the sun without fear of melanoma! Hooray! But my favorite thing about CNF is the little fruit and vegetable garden out front that pops up every May. I love watching the heirlooms grow and the smell of the strawberries ripening in the sun. Come for the sunflower rice wraps, stay for the garden. read more

Everyone wants live a healthy life. Sometimes it's hard to do when "healthy" isn't always the most convienent or affordable option. Community Natural Foods has made huge strides in making "healthy" easier for everyone. CNF has a very eclectic product line to cover any of your needs, no matter what age or need you have. This location specifically is tucked away and a bit difficult to find if you're not familiar with the area. However, I do prefer it to the other location simply because it is much less busy that the downtown location. It does not have the food buffet bar that the downtown location has, but it does have everything else from a produce, bulk, and consumer goods front. If you're new to the environmental movement of eating healthy, I'd suggest picking up one of the many great books they have to help you get started cooking with many of their unique ingredients. I don't mind coming to this location on an evening to get a few things, but good luck getting around the store if you're shopping with a cart (and this applies to both locations). I'm pretty sure there is a secret gathering amongst all of the other shoppers in the store that I've not been invited to yet, where they all get together behind the store to smoke patchouli or maybe wave incense sticks over be another. Every aspect of ignorant customer behaviour going on in this store - but it's hard to blame people when you can't fit more than one person in an aisle at a time. I both locations overall have a good selection, but I prefer the Beltline location for produce - larger selection and it seems fresher. I won't lie - my life would be complete if Whole Foods would open a Calgary location. I've yet to find an organic grocery store here that has the perfect balance of produce and non-perishables like Whole Foods does. read more

I had heard great things about the market at CNF and couldn't wait to check it out for a quick bite before a yoga class. My fiance and I ordered a bunch of deli salads and veggie chili. We sat down and were a bit sad to find the silverware was all marked and a bit dirty in places. The salads were also not the most delicious veggie food I have had either. The curry chickpea was the best of the bunch, but the slaw had way too much fennel and the wheatberry really just needed a bit of salt! The chili also had a bit too much of a smokey chili spice for my liking. We ate what we could and decided to take the left overs with us as we do not believe in wasting food. We wandered around the rest of the store and I was impressed by their selection. Especially their selection of raw confections! We picked up a couple more items, drooled over a couple appliances, and left. I am sad to say the salads never did get eaten as they were no better the next day. Or the day after. And then they started looking inedible. I don't know that I will go back to to the fresh market, but I will come back for groceries and specialty items when I am in the area. read more

I moved from the northwest of Calgary to the southwest and was thrilled to find this place here. The one near Crowfoot is excellent. This...is not excellent. Starting with a basic gripe about a couple of the snotty kids who perform checkout who will cheerfully stand with their back to you while you wait as they flirt with each other, end ending with a constant out of stock condition on things. I am tired of it. This is probably a easy fix in my opinion, and frankly most of the people who work there are helpful and pleasant, but I don't need it. I am not a big fan of Planet Organic, but at least they don't run out of organic cane sugar for days on end. Update: two months or so later. Lovely new layout, the snotty kid at the till is gone...and the only two things I need are out of stock. I will accept this is my fault for assuming someone works here who might take an occasional look at the empty spots on the shelves and wonder if something goes there. Down to one star. Some really cool finds here at Community Natural Foods--really like seeing they have a pretty complete line of Aubrey Organics skin care products/shampoos/etc. Some produce, raw/organic foods, kitchen accessories, and health care items. Pretty small place packs in a lot. For myself, I was able to find a substitute for a moisturizer I was unable to bring on the plane for my vacation. At the discussion of my friend, a native (also my host on my vacation to the area), I agreed with him that prices on imported goods, such as rice (grown in my home state, California), is rather exorbitant but not unexpectedly. However, some other items, such as dry goods that might be found at other stores (i.e., noodles from T & T, etc.) were from 3-5 times as expensive. While the other Community Natural Foods is about three blocks north of my apartment building, it always feels like it is a special treat to be able to get over to this one for some reason. When I first went consciously vegan when I was much younger, I got very into cooking myself. Eventually, I realized that I could make more than just stirfries for dinner every night if I had the right resources. Queue my amazing padre driving me into Calgary soley for special vegan groceries when this location opened! Community Natural Foods was initially very overwhelming to me, coming from a rural Albertan town that had an IGA and Co-Op only until recently; each boasting one kind of soy milk, and a handful of organic cereals and maybe some tofu, or organic peanut butter if I was lucky. I was floored when I would go to Community Natural Foods, and I could have treats such as vegan iced cream, dried pineapples, bulk teas, Earth Balance for baking, ingredients such as nutritional yeast and coconut oil that I had only dreamt about after hearing about these things in magazines! This is also where my family would purchase our annual Tofurkey meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas time. These were my favourite trips in the city. A decade later, I still get equally excited for my trips to this Community Natural Foods, although some of the charm and wonder of easily attainable Earth Balance does wear off when all of a sudden you have to order 30 pounds of it because you're putting on a bake sale (yes, I was once the proud owner of 30 pounds of Earth Balance).... Also, I like this Community Natural Foods more because they see my face less. For awhile there, a gentleman at the 10th Ave SW location was keeping track of how many heads of kale, and tofurkey products I would purchase in a week (not all of them were for just me... I have roommates!). Therefore, I feel more free to binge on all of my favourite things here because I will not have to take the walk of shame back into their store later that week when I've already devoured all of my kale salads and expensive grapes! I love this supermarket!!.. Everything there is very natural and healthy!..it is a little pricey, but everything is Great!! The best of all are the cheeses. This place has the best selection of cheeses in Calgary!...they are all delicious. As I mentioned before, it is not cheap, but I never regret going there!! read more

I was surprised one bag of capsules could cost so much. I asked her to double check the price, she weighed it rang it through again, the price shot up to $191. The Law of Diminishing Returns that we all learned in high school states that if you increase your prices, demand will decrease and supply will increase. At CNF, the super-inflated prices result in prepared foods, meat and produce sitting on the shelf for much longer than necessary. If they would lower their prices 10-15%, the organic produce would turn over much faster and therefore would be fresher. I understand why organic is expensive, but it would be nice to have some quality to justify the higher price. I stopped by to pick up some produce. I have never seen such terrible quality in a produce section, not even at Superstore (the worst of the major chains, IMO). Most of the stuff was bruised, rotting, mottled or otherwise deteriorated (limes, apples, spinach bunches, cucumbers, pears, onions). The only bright points were SOME of the greens (Kale, Collards), the roma tomatoes (the guy was just putting out new stock) and the prepacked salad mixes. Most of the fresh stuff ought to be composted, it was so awful. You'd think that with this kind of store, you'd have staff that would know better. I know I'm sacrificing some quality for getting product that does not use chemical fertilizers, but please. The produce was garbage. I expertly can't speak for the other sections (I had soup once from there and it was pretty good), but judging from my experience buying (cough, cough) fresh produce there, I would recommend one stays away. read more
