Racial Profiling - plain clothed security Went in to the 10th avenue store to look for supplements to help with my joint pain. Went to the supplement area looking for help, no one was there for ~5 minutes so I walked around till a staff member appeared and I asked for help. During that time, a plain clothed security follow me and watched me as I looked for products. Even when I was talking to a staff member, he followed us around and stared at me. After I decided on the product, I mentioned to the staff that it was very rude what the plain clothed security did to me. She said she noticed it as well and apologized. I went to the till to pay and to no surpise, the security guard was still staring at me. I them waved to him and paid. I called to complain to the main help line, told them my issue and said they would get back to me. It has been over two weeks. Probably didnt get back to me as they never asked for my contact information This is a classic case of racial profiling. No response from Community Natural Foods. Absolutely shocking disgusting place that harrassed customers and lies to get them banned. We were loyal shoppers for 15+ years without incident but staff at Crowfoot location were inexplicably hostile to my mom for no reason, accusing her of stealing without proof, addressing her in a too personal way, getting too close and in her face during Covid and most recently, when she was in a hurry and late for an appointment, they refuse to help her find a supplement and just ignored or avoided her. Understandably she was upset at the horrible lack of customer service she received. Rather than apologize, they shot her down then banned her the next day. We continued shopping at the downtown branch and occasionally I would pick up emergency items from the closer Crowfoot location. One day I rushed in in a hurry to pick something up, well aware they were closing soon. The supervisor called after me, telling me they're closing soon. I continued walking, well aware they were closing soon. She said 'Did you hear me?' I paused and said quite civilly, 'Yes.' the next thing I knew, I was banned. Presumably for that! Then to add insult to injury, when we went to the downtown branch we were told we are both banned there now too! This after 15 years of no incidences and being loyal customers, this is how they treat us. I called customer 'care' thinking it was a sick mistake and they said they would forward my concern to the appropriate person but no one ever got back to me. I then emailed them, no response. I have since told all my friends and colleagues of this hateful disgusting mistreatment. They were all shocked and won't shop there either. I wouldn't normally leave a review, but after what happened, I have to warn others. My partner got severe food poisoning after eating here today. She's been throwing up and completely lethargic all day. It's clear the food wasn't handled or prepared properly. This is basic food safety--if a restaurant can't ensure that, people's health is at risk. We won't be coming back, and I'd recommend others be careful. I am not big on healthy, gluten, vegan and keto food. I came here for an event held here: Keto tasting. I came to learn about Keto diet. This popular Keto diet is all new and foreign to me. There are about 1 event per month held here. This location is their first location out of the three in Calgary. They are recently bought out by Co-op. Prices are still the same or just as premium as before. There are lots of parking outside but they are not free parking. I live about 10 mins away so there is no points for me to drive my car here. Selections / options are interesting here. They sell groceries, produce, supplements, lotions, shampoo and etc. They sell mostly healthy food at a premium. Everything in store is organic or made fresh in house. This place attracts a lot of health conscious people. I noticed their market shares are tailored toward an older crowd. I don't know a lot of supermarkets or stores that are similar or compete directly with Community Naturals. read more

I've frequented this store periodically over the last 12 years. They carry some favourite products. Some items I find are just too pricey though. That's not a concern...I just shop for meats and fresh produce elsewhere. My issue is with the pretentious staff, usually younger. After losing my mom to cancer I became very motivated to buy organic. This store advertized grown in Canada but the squash had grown in Mexico stickers on squash. If they lie on this what else are they lying about? Mexican Cartels run the country. Nobody is checking pesticides so rich Canadians! All Mexican produce should be considered toxic. I enjoy going to Community especially if I am looking for health advice and healthy products, vegetables, meats and seafoods. The staff are always pleasant and helpful. I invariably come out with more than I intended simply because there are so many healthy choices. Overall, very clean and well organized. Especially like the cafeteria for a healthy meal. Prices may appear high but you get quality for your dollar here. I feel government should be subsidizing healthy eating and healthy living if they are serious about bettering this country. After all, if everyone was able to eat delicious healthy foods and consume healthy products then imagine how our healthcare costs would drop. Community is a great organization especially, at giving back to the community. We should support the company for this reason alone. I've been shopping at Community Natural Foods for more than a decade, often spending $500+/month. I find the presence of "security guards" distasteful, intimidating and reminiscent of a third world country which I have personally lived in. In no way does it make me feel "safer". More generally speaking, the atmosphere has been declining and selection as well as staff knowledge of product has been steadily declining in the past few years. Prices are high. I am actively exploring other options for purchasing health food and care products. read more

I used to love Community Natural Foods. I loved it so much that I would stop by here every time I visited Calgary, but when I was here last month, I was totally disappointed. I initially liked this place, because they have everything. There's a small restaurant with yummy organic and healthy foods, a large supplement section, a fresh produce section, and there's lots of aisles with all kinds of packaged organic foods. They also sell baked goods and even carry some gluten-free cookies and breads, which are some of the best I've tasted. All of that still exists, but now the store seems totally pretentious and uber trendy. It seems to have become very commercialized, and the prices are sky high now. It's cool that they got rid of bags, but who needs a bag, when you can't afford their food? I guess it's still an okay store, but I won't be stopping here anymore, when I visit Calgary. read more

This is a massive building behind Staples in the downtown area; it has a huge sign on it and reminds me of a grain elevator that you can see from miles away. This place does carry grain; in fact it carries grains, organic vegetables, every type of tofu, tortilla chip and rice cake imaginable, and all type of natural food products. But...let's not limit this place just to food, there is an area with yoga mats and clothing, there is an area of water bottles, there is a multivitamin and supplement area, there is a natural beauty product area, there is even a little buffet with tables as you come in. Community Natural Foods ltd appeals to the community, a conscious community but a community that can afford its produce. There were many people in today, the aisles were crowded; I did see a mother shopping with her two little girls and CNF has these little shopping carts so that little humans can shop here too...sooo cute. The woman at the information desk was very very nice, explaining the concept of the store to me, they try to buy as much produce locally, but of course products are from all over, they do however carry locally bought organic meat and poultry which is a plus. I checked out the frozen products section and I saw items here that I have never seen in other food stores, even in the huge uber "super" stores: frozen chicken butter curry, a vast assortment of bean burritos, oriental ginger chicken. The concept of heating up an exotic meal in seconds is quite attractive and I must admit as I walked around looking at all the food that was good for me, I did start to feel a little more healthy inside. But just as a few fellow yelpers have stated, why is this supposedly healthy food is so expensive, why again is it only available to people who can afford it, why shouldn't it be accessible for everyone. If you do want these type of products I would recommend Sunnyside Natural Market in Kensington, of course the selection is limited but the prices are more affordable. CNF has free parking in a lot outside and a community board with tons of services like massage and yoga etc, which again is good for you and overpriced. If you don't mind paying more money than usual for organic and natural products then this is your definite one stop place to visit. I love this store and spend hundreds of dollars on food and vitamins. Most of the staff are friendly, helpful, and really nice: Dylan, Cat, Sally, and almost everyone. They also know me. Except the ladies in customer service. They know me but are often unfriendly. For example, on February 3rd I bought several products and paid for a wheat free chocolate cupcake. I then saw a package of 4 cupcakes on sale. So I requested the Café to cancel my order. They told me customer service would reimburse me. The S1 Supervisor went to the Café to make sure I was saying the truth - after hundreds of dollars spent there for so many years she didn't trust me? She reimbursed me, and never lifted her head to look at me. Often unfriendly and sometimes unhelpfu. read more

I've gone to all 3 Community Natural shops in the city, and have been pleased each and every time (4.25 stars). The 10th Avenue site is good for their breads, supplements and other groceries, but the deli is a standout. So good tasting, and moderately priced. The only thing that could be improved - for the prices - is add a check-out in the large eating area. Taking one's plate of uncovered food out into the main store to have it weighed and paid for at a common till is potentially inviting nasties from any direction...? The NW site is about the same size with the same stock but a smaller less attractive deli and eat-in area. Their 61st Avenue venue near Chinook seems smaller, but we often go there for a lot of things. And the staff at all stores are excellent and super helpful, especially in the supplement sections. If you apply for their online notices, you can go for their specials if they appeal to you? Despite their pricing, I recommend Community Naturals as tops of its kind in AB. read more

Hi there. I've been shopping at the location occassionaly for deals. However, yesterday when I came by the store to buy this certain Product EMP Plus. The store I usually go to called Replenish is $10 off. They told me they were willing to honor to price match that store. I couldn't find the picture of the item I wanted to price match from the store, because they were about to close. Today I call them to assure I can price match with this picture. They told me they only price match with certain store, even I got false information from they're customer service yesterday that they would price match with Replenish. I think it's not fair that they would not take ownership by making an one time acception after they gave me false information. Plus it was more conviennent for me. Store is clean and bright. Staff has always been friendly. I always found this store to be expensive. Now just more so than ever before. I have a decent job and my family is grown so I can somewhat afford it from time to time. I did feel like they gouged me extra today though when I forget my bags. They're charging 25 cents for paper (not even with handles) I found that to be just pure greed. Bad enough the prices of everything else are on the higher side without adding even more expenses. With that being said it's my last time there due to that. I can take my business where I feel the owners care at least a touch more about their customers. read more

If I could give this place 4.5 stars I really would. It is so close to perfection for me, so I am being slightly generous with my half a star but I'm ok with it. For one, the bakery is amazing. Seriously, some of the most delicious vegan desserts I have ever had. It has taken first place away from my favourite vegan bakery ever located in Washington, DC that is so good that it has gotten award after award (even by non-vegans.) I have been dairy free for over 4 years now and I always appreciate amazing pastures that make me forget I even have an allergy. Anyway, pastries aside Community has the best selection of vegan products I have been able to find so far. I was able find multiple varieties of vegan cheese, milk, and yogurt. They even have locally made vegan cheese spread. The fake-meat products are a little lacking but I did appreciate the reasonable price of tofu. Also, the salad bar has quality ingredients and a good variety. The only reason I would minus half a star is that the fresh produce section could be a bit more robust. That being said, I found about everything I wanted so even my complaints there aren't that tenable. It's not a very big store, so I don't know if I would be able I exclusively shop there, but I do know that I would drive across town for this place. read more

Ok, so I should just get this out there: I don't have any issues with GM foods and crops (I even strongly support the increases in global food production yeilds that they often provide). I'm one of those evil people who likes my apples red and giant and uniform. Even my love of healthy and natural related stuff comes and gos, and I am probably part of the problem and not the solution. I am not, in short, the target market of Community Natural foods because I mostly just don't care. That being said, I quite like it. I like seeing the organic foods (which sometimes do taste better) and the selection of weird and healthy products that I would never see at say, Superstore. I enjoy the hazardous-chemical free natural products that the store provides. I like the community atmosphere of do-gooding that the store tends to provide. But mostly when I'm in here, all I can think of is how paying through the nose for all-natural seems to be a primarily yuppie affliction, and that it just doesn't seem worth it. The stuff here is prohibitively expensive for a lot of people, and I think sustainability comes with (social) accessibility. I find myself examining the hypocrisy of the place more than the products, simply because of the message it carries. It is conveniently located downtown. read more

Discovered the most delicious VEGAN CARROT CAKE here at their cafe! Not what I was expecting to walk out with at all but I've been dreaming of this cake every day since the last bite. I couldn't believe it was vegan. I'm a picky eater, as is my mom and we both thought it was * eyes closed total euphoria* I could've sworn I'd died and gone to heaven with each bite. $5 for a huge slice of the thickest, creamiest, most flavourful cake I've ever tasted! Words to describe it? "MOIST (it had to be said) dense, sweet, fluffy, buttery, rich, complex fall flavours (with juicy raisins!) I dare any unknowing non-vegans to guess its vegan! I had to stop myself from turning back to order an entire cake (it's still a possibility). Whoever created this... you're my hero and I'll definitely be back for it as frequently as possible (so please never remove it from the menu!) My new go to treat. I've been frequenting CNF more often now that I've discovered I'm dairy-sensitive. There're many products in regular grocery stores that have dairy in them, including any sort of chocolate or chocolate chips you'd bake with, even the bittersweet/dark chocolate stuff (seriously - wassup with that?) There's also a large assortment of nut dips and soy products like sour cream and cream cheese. I like to browse the frozen and refrigerated sections for new dairy-free goodies I can try. The So Delicious coconut milk chocolate dipped bars with almonds are divine and I don't even miss the dairy in it. I've also purchased a dairy-free blueberry cheesecake I still need to try. Walking into this store is like a dairy-free person's dream. I'm usually there to buy dessert, ingredients for sauces or baking items, but generally walk out with a few more things than I'd come for. It's pricier than your typical grocery stores so the cheap-o in me won't do all my shopping there. You may also find fruits or veggies that you couldn't find at one of the Big 3 supermarkets, and way better quality than if you had anyhow. My biggest issue with this location is the parking - it's awful. Save yourself the headache and opt for on-street parking, just make sure you're not trying to park during a rush-hour no parking time. Oh, and bring your own bags or have fun trying to juggle your purchases if you don't want to pay for one. read more

I was first introduced to Community Natural Foods in 2006 when I was taking a course at the Personal Best Seminars building. During breaks, the group would wander over to Community Natural Foods to enjoy the buffet. I have been hooked ever since. I work on the west side of downtown, so on a nice day, it is not uncommon to wander over there for the salad bar. The fixings are organic and healthy and I love the fact that there are so many prepared grain salads, such as quinoi tabulleah, the wild rice salad with cranberries is another favorite and couscous to name a few. The hot buffet favorites are definately the samosas with mango chutney, the chickpea curry and the vegetarian chili. I usually get a small "hot" buffet to stay, and then get a large salad to go, for dinner. Everything is sold by weight in the salad containers, so my recommendation is not to purchase your hot food by weight. They have a different pricing structure for the chilis and chick pea curries. If you put the hot food in with your salad (which you can!) you may have a heart attack at the till. Keep them separate and your bill will be extremely reasonable. Sadly, I have learned that lesson the hard way a few times, and sadly even the sticker shock hasn't kept me away because it is so healthy and delicious. I can keep my lunch to around $10 now, but before I figured out how to navigate the hot food and to buy it by portionI have paid up to $18. So be careful! Its a huge difference. read more

Once you (miraculously) find a parking spot, this place gets much better. I wish more of their locations had a cafe part to them. My only other complaint is I find this location to be quite poorly lit. It's kind of hard to write a review about a grocery store... where do I begin...? Shopping local is important. Not only do you support your local economy, but your environmental impact is reduced, customer service is (usually!) better, jobs are created and unique businesses start to arise. And that, in summary, is Community Natural Foods. If you're used to shopping in the big supermarkets, Community takes a bit of getting used to. You won't find shelves upon shelves upon shelves of a variety of pre-packaged foods. Don't get me wrong, Community still provides lots of pre-packaged options, but there are fewer, higher quality options. They'll even tell you which cans are BPA-free, which items are gluten-free or vegan or dairy-free! Community is definitely targeted towards the health nut, but that doesn't mean you won't find high flying executives, athletes, moms & babies and regular Jo's all shopping together. You won't be intimidated to do your shopping here. The food is high quality, is mostly organic and where it can be is also local. While that doesn't always come cheap, these are the choices I've made for my food purchases. This is a great place to come if you are looking for that strange ingredient you may have never heard of before. Almond meal? Rose water? Cane suger? Yep, you can find all of that at Community. Looking for farm fresh, grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free meat? Community is your place to go. It's not cheap, but I can definitely tell the difference in quality! In terms of non-food products, they also have plenty of that. It is a great spot for niche cookbooks (gluten-free, paleo, vegan, etc), water filters, candles, natural toiletries and cleaning products, and more. I will only buy things from here if I absolutely can not find it elsewhere. I don't mind coming to this location on an evening to get a few things, but good luck getting around the store if you're shopping with a cart (and this applies to both locations). I'm pretty sure there is a secret gathering amongst all of the other shoppers in the store that I've not been invited to yet, where they all get together behind the store to smoke patchouli or maybe wave incense sticks over be another. Every aspect of ignorant customer behaviour going on in this store - but it's hard to blame people when you can't fit more than one person in an aisle at a time. I both locations overall have a good selection, but I prefer the Beltline location for produce - larger selection and it seems fresher. I do find the prices to be a lot higher for all of their grocery and fresh products - I can usually find the same products for less at Safeway or Superstore, and sometimes even less with Safeway's Club Card. CNF offers very few incentives or discounts. I'm willing to spend a little more on their meats though as you can't find most at other stores (bison, ostrich, etc.). I won't lie - my life would be complete if Whole Foods would open a Calgary location. I've yet to find an organic grocery store here that has the perfect balance of produce and non-perishables like Whole Foods does. read more

Purchased some Acai Granola ($4.79) and Soy Drink ($5.27) at CNF. Took a look around and its a pretty extensive market. All sorts of health, gluten free and organically made goods. Mark-up seems high, but with most of smaller grocery stores in the area, very comparable. My favourite part of the experience was getting $0,05 off for bringing my own bag. Finally, a store that reads social psychology studies which state people respond better to incentives rather than punishments. I've been to this store only once and was quite pleased with the selection. I was searching for two things in particular, both which are notoriously difficult to find in Calgary. I found them both here at CNF, at pretty decent prices! I did some more rummaging around the store, and found little containers of nut butters, different types of honey, etc. Seemed like a great place to buy specialty items, or items that are a bit different from your run-of-the-mill big box grocery store. read more

She refused to put on her mask and although I have NEVER had a problem at any other store in over a year, an aggressive security guard followed me into the store and told me I had to leave or else he would call the police on me! Yes. I told him what the Alberta law stated and he said it didn't matter, that I was "harassing" the employees (I didn't say a word to the employees) and I needed to remove myself. I literally had tears in my eyes as he continued to rudely ask me to leave the premises. I refused since I know the law and my rights and the manager asked him to leave me alone. I was shaken with how I was treated in Front of my 3 kids. Even customers approached me and were visibly angry at how Community responded. I generally come here for specific gluten free products, but have also come for the salad bar...that has no meat. Yes, I know there is alternatives, but sometimes you just want tasty chicken on your salad. It's super expensive, which I think is unfair. I was recently deflowered by our local Community Natural Foods store. Having visited a number of organic/health stores in Toronto, Chicago and around the globe, I'd be pretty confident in knowing which separates the good ones from the bad. This particular store carries a vast array of products. Not just baked goods, vegan ingredients or organic produce; They also carry all-natural bath products. Although the aisles are extremely congested when there is more than one person in them, they do have an impressive selection of goods. To add to the mix, they also offer a lunch buffet. I was intrigued so I tried it. It's all vegetarian Indian food, but I have to be honest, it's extremely bland. I wouldn't recommend going to Community Natural Foods for their buffet, but rather for the products and merchandise they sell. It's safe to say that Community Natural Foods carries the largest selection & variety of organic,vegan and all-natural goods in downtown Calgary. Overall, it's not the most all-encompassing natural food store I've ever been in, but it definitely does the job. I have full faith that this natural foods store will carry what you're looking for, and if for whatever reason it doesn't, then I'm positive that the good people at Community Natural Foods will be able to direct you as to where to get it. Alright, so the building itself is in an up and coming neighbour hood, the parking lot is tiny and limited to 10 cars at a time. Once you get out of your car theirs signs to remind you "No idling". The front of the store looks like it was an old warehouse.... and the stairway needs some repairs. Luckily if your in a wheelchair or have a stroller theirs provided access. Walking inside most days you'll find a greeter, and plenty of local events happening around town, and added services that The Natural Community store provides such as speakers and professional offering free consultations. The aroma inside is fantastic; it's nutty, earthy and fresh veggies all tangled into 1. Theirs a small restaurant/ Cafe inside that's pertains to vegans, vegetarians, and Gluten free food. During the day they offer home-made sandwiches, pizza or main entrées or a buffet that's packed with a large salad bar. Shopping in the Grocery part is a bit tricky, for starters finding someone that works there to help you in hard to come-by and most times I get people who don't know the store or the products. The selection is great, but a fore warning; nothing comes cheap. Dig deep into your wallet if you want quality food. For me I Come back each week because I love the Saucy Ladies Pickles (made in Lethbridge, AB) , the GF Pizza dough, GF Miso soup, Wheat Free Planet GF Banana bread & Quiona Cookies! I have been coming here for years. Community has grown over the years and changed the array of items they used and widened their inventory. I can almost get any vegan item I need here. The only thing I could not that I can recall is a dairy free whipped cream. They don't have a soy or rice based whipped "cream" and I thought this was a little odd because I've seen them before even at Safeway. lol I always come here for my tofurky, tempeh, bulk goods, supplements and specialty items. The only bad experience I've had is some Tofurky being moldy despite being unopened. My bf was not too happy about that, as at $4.99 it's a little pricey to just go into the garbage. Not sure who's fault that was. I wish the store was a little bigger as it can be quite crowded, but I guess I can't expect that in Calgary. It's not Vancouver... I still miss Whole Foods sometimes, but Community is pretty good these days. The hot food bar looks nice, but it doesn't seem too vegan friendly aside from the salad bar so I have yet to try that out. Im a fan of Community Foods. They have it all...organic, vegan, non GMO, raw... The Chinook location is a smaller, so doesnt have all the choices in selection. They also dont have a cafeteria at this location either. Neither location has great parking, but the Chinook location is right across the street from the LRT. I also find on weekends, the downtown location is really busy, and the aisles are packed because they are so small. The unfortunate part I find, not only in Calgary, but most of Canada, is how expensive unprocessed/nonGMO etc...so I find Community on the expensive side. Anywho, the more we buy, the less costly it will be to access great food. read more
