I've been to Dr. Lai twice for routine cleaning and exams, and those visits went well -- he's nice, patient, and my previous dental repairs look good. During an exam, he found a wisdom tooth that needed extraction and referred me to Dr. Jin Wan Kim, who performed the procedure well. The problem -- and the reason for my one star -- is their billing practices and the unnecessary treatment they performed. Before treatment, they briefly mentioned the bone graft might not be covered by insurance and pointed to a price of ~$800, with the total estimated cost around $2,750. I assumed it would be fine, but later learned my Delta PPO plan covered only the extraction ($550) -- not the bone graft ($1,400) or the guided tissue regeneration ($800). This makes me question whether the bone graft and regeneration were truly necessary. As widely noted: A bone graft is often recommended if you're planning a future implant, but if not, it may not be needed. It felt like they pushed extra procedures without clearly explaining the medical necessity or the full financial implications. To make matters worse, they made little effort to confirm coverage beforehand or assist with an insurance appeal afterward. I've lost trust in them and will not return. If this dentist is out of your network, stay away. read more

Been here for almost 2 decades, from the old owner to the new one. The transition was smooth as both dentists had very similar styles of operations, which eventually I decided to leave. The routine visit is about 45 minutes with cleaning, doctor review and consultation, sometimes x-ray also depending on the insurance policy. I think the cleaning is good, they are more frequent on suctions that makes me feel comfortable. Their equipment was also updated, including screens and movie selections. Two reasons drive me to switch dentists in the end. One is the appointment arrangement. Every appointment was made 6 months in advance, but somehow every time a few days before the visit or the day of the visit I would always get a call and been asked if I could come in earlier. I feel that the patients calendar is not being respected. Secondly, there's always some operations that the doctor would suggest me to take in every visit while my gum level was super healthy, the cleaning was painless and no cavities were detected. It seemed to me that they are pushing the sale too much and not making enough from insurance on regular cleaning. This place is my saving grace after a horrid experience with my previous dentist. Everyone here is super welcoming and caring and very much into educating their patients. The entire experience from start (filling out the forms beforehand) to end (scheduling my next appointment) was very reassuring I had made the right decision to come here. Scheduling my appointment, I given a questionnaire beforehand so I wouldn't be wasting my appointment slot at the office filling out paperwork. The paperwork is very straightforward and very simple to fill out and submit. Upon my arrival, there was a lot of parking and the place is snug right in the middle. I was greeted, checked in very fast and offered water (which surprised me). I was immediately taken to the back and once I sat in my chair, was offered NETFLIX or Disney+ to watch. Dr. Wu arrived very promptly and she was so friendly. She got right to business and explained everything as we went through my appointment. While looking at my teeth, she switched the tv to the video cam and we toured my teeth together. It was a trip seeing my teeth on tv! Dr. Wu was informative and even put on YouTube to show a small video clip of how dental hygiene really makes a difference. Of all the dentists I've had throughout my life, no one took the time to really explain dental care and relate it back to me. Most dentists just say you have a cavity, brush, floss and mouth wash and send you on your way. Also, some dentists would rush through your cleaning and you can feel that they're rushing. But coming here, I felt very taken cared of and cared for. Dr. Wu could've had a booked schedule, but not once did I feel like she was rushing me out. She remained calm and answered all my questions like she had all the time in the world! Customer service goes a long way with me and I'm so happy to be a patient here. read more

I prefer texting over calling and they are great at responding to messages. The staff are always extremely friendly and accommodating. Scheduling is always a breeze. I've been going here for many years. Even though I have moved away from the area, I'm still willing to drive an hour to this office because I trust their team. I highly recommend them. read more

Started coming this office in 2018 while living in the area. Dr. Lai was awesome! Notable treatments: He fixed an old filling that wasn't done well, and actually popped out during a routine cleaning! Then he explained how you could tell the difference between a good and bad filling. Also I did my Invisalign treatment with Dr. Lai. Sharania on the staff is very helpful, and always recognized me over the phone. Appointments were readily available and the front desk would make sure to schedule your treatment on your way out. The follow-up system is also solid, you receive a text message confirming your appointment a few days before. read more

Professional and knowledgeable doctors and team. I went in as a new patient and my visit was perfect and pretty fun. They have hand massagers, TV , etc. More importably they have all safety protocols in place and have taken extra steps to ensure patients feel safe and happy. Both Dr. Lai and Dr. Wu are very gentle, friendly and knowledgeable. They explained my treatment plan very clearly and answered all my questions. I have been a patient of Dr. Lai for over five years, and I never regret having my dental work here. He is very nice and friendly with a signature smile! Price is reasonable, and they are in multiple mainstream dental insurance networks. I would love to recommend Compass Dental Arts to everyone! I would love to add some detail to showcase what a responsible doctor Dr. Lai is. About two years ago, I had a crown installed on one of my teeth here. Less than one year later, when I had a routine check on my teeth with Dr. Lai, he found that there was a leak under the crown, which was a concern. He honestly brought it up with me, promise that since it was within a year, he would love to replace the crown for me without any charge, and instantly scheduled another appointment for the work. This event makes me confident that he always provides honest opinions on what dental works need to be performed. If you are looking for a reliable dentist, look no further. read more

This is run by the same people at Pacific Bay Dental on North First street. I've been going here for the past 6 years since I first moved to the South Bay. I'm not dentist, so I can't say if the services and quality offered is top notch. I am also not a rocket scientist which is why I cannot rate whether NASA is really good at launching rockets. However the staff is very friendly and personable. And I don't think I've gotten an assistant that was grumpy and stared right into my soul while I lay immobilized on the dental chair. One issue is that the assistants change a lot, so it's hard to make any personal connections specifically with the assistants. However Dr. Chu is the only consistent dentist there, and she is more than friendly with all her patients. If your concern is insurance, they seem have it down for Cisco employees since they get a lot of them. So you'll be covered in full if you own Cisco insurance. However, River Oaks Dental seems to cost more, so for people with more bare-bones insurance, you might have to look to cover some additional costs. This could mean that River Oaks Dental offers additional services and care beyond normal, but I'm no dentist so it's best to inquire if curious. Dean does most of the paperwork and insurance quoting, and because he's the husband of Dr. Chu he has some leeway on helping out if you're insurance doesn't cover everything. Cool thing about this place is that they have a dog name Bob. Once I took him out for a walk and he stopped walking. I am not a dog, so I can't tell if this is normal behavior. read more

The entire staff from the front office, dental assistants, dental hygienist, travel Periodontist, and the two dentists Dr. Wu and Dr. Lai are phenomenal!! From the moment they took over this dental practice, I could feel the positive energy. They have implemented new ways to make coming to the dentist as comfortable as possible such as Netflix, pillows, having the cutest emotional support dogs onsite, etc... The process from making an appointment, all the way to the follow up calls or texts to make sure everything is ok after procedures is wonderful. Everyone is super friendly, laid back, and so helpful. I was in your office recently pointing out at the most basic treatment going wrong at ur office. It was closure of a simple midline diastema and placing of a permanent retainer. Dr. Chu charged him for the entire treatment without any result, did not place any retainer and when there is a relapse now, she says she would redo the treatment at additional cost. I checked my records really well before leaving any comment, even earlier...... I think u guys need to your Homework in all the aspects. I love it here. So far I have had a cleaning, a deep cleaning, fillings and a root canal done. Normally I would say that amount of work would be horrible but it has actually been the opposite. This is a review for river oaks dental and Dr. Chu. I initially came here in 2015 as I was new to the area and needed a dentist and Dr. Chu was nearby. She was nice and competent with my cleanings and regular checkups (and I got my wisdom teeth removed with the oral surgeon they bring in). If that were the end, I would have given 3 stars. Two things that were terrible experiences leading to the poor review. 1. On a 6 month check up, I was told I needed a deep cleaning as I had a few 4-5 millimeter pockets. I scheduled the deep cleaning and asked what the cost would be and was told it's covered under my insurance. After the procedure, I did feel a noticeable difference in my gums BUT was billed from my insurance company and was told that it wasn't covered so I ended up paying out of pocket. I spent the better part of 1 year going back and forth between the dentist and insurance company to get this covered. In the end it worked out and I was able to write a letter to the insurance company and get it covered. Truly disappointed that the staff did not give me the correct information and I understand I could have checked with my insurance before hand but I trusted the staff to have access to the information and accurately provide it to me (like all my other doctors). Even though I did notice a difference in my gum health, this experience left me feeling that they were only after making money by scheduling procedures and not communicating properly with patients. 2. Poor Invisalign management. During my first visit, Dr. Chu and I spoke about Invisalign which I have been wanting to do for a few years. After my wisdom teeth were taken out, I started treatment with Dr. Chu at the end of 2015. I was told it would take about 15 months so I assumed I would be complete somewhere in mid 2017. Fast forward to the end of 2018 and I STILL was not complete with treatment and had minimal progress. Dr. Chu and staff were very unprofessional and I did not feel like I was being cared for properly. On multiple occasions for my Invisalign check ins, the office was so busy that I wasn't even taken to a chair and the staff or Dr. Chu would quickly look at my teeth in the waiting room and then send me along my. I had to be the one to point out that my bottom aligners had huge gaps and not covering my teeth at which point they would bring me back for an actual proper evaluation and create new aligners for me. This happened at least 3 times. Additionally, my teeth were shaved down to make space as I have crowding but by the end of treatment, the gap created was not filled and I was given the option of having my tooth moved out of position to hide the gap (which meant additional aligners) or pay to have bonding put on the tooth to make it look like it should. Shaving the tooth hurt so much that they had to give me multiple numbing injections and when I pointed out they made the gap, Dr. Chu denied it and I had to insist they did at which point I was told they would have to look back at my case records. Nothing came of it and Dr. Chu wanted me to continue treatment and did not address the situation. At this point, I was doing Invisalign with her for 3 years when I was told 15 months. Having had enough, I consulted with another doctor who right away said my tooth was unnecessarily shaved and I needed rubberbands. He walked me through everything and made me feel very informed which Dr. Chu never did so I ultimately decided to take my treatment out of Dr. Chu's hands but again, she made it difficult. She tried to keep me as a patient, insisting that she's had so much success with cases worse than mine. Additionally she was reluctant to release my information and case to my new doctor stating that her Invisalign agent cannot be reached (untrue as the new doctor said they are able to do this at any point in time). I was charged an additional $5k out of pocket to transfer doctors and have to get this gap filled and none of it is thanks to Dr. Chu or the staff. I feel swindled out of a lot of money and unfortunately, because Dr. Chu sold the practice and is no longer working there, I feel like I am unable to recoup anything. read more

I would give Dr. Lai, Dr. Wu and all their wonderful staff 10 out of 10 instead of 5 stars if I could. Love the excellence, professionalism and especially very friendly caring dental services that I have experienced for years. I'm very grateful to Dr. Chu and her team for letting me into both of their dental offices (not sure if other dentists would be wiling to do so) for shadowing. From the beginning, she made me extremely comfortable as it was my first shadowing experience in the United States. I was fortunate to shadow and learn from Dr. Chu and Dr. Wenli Loo for the past couple of years and it's been a gratifying experience for a foreign dentist like me. Dr. Chu's infectious energy is hard to miss! She is warm, patient and extremely professional in her work. Dr. Chu's ability to talk to any patient on a wide variety of topics impressed me. She is passionate about educating her patients about proper oral care and is committed to helping every patient have a fantastic dental hygiene. She also makes sure that all her equipment, tools are up to date and also ensures that all patients receive a complete dental treatment, with utmost care and compassion. I really enjoy coming to River Oaks Dental--Dr. Chu is so pleasant to be around! But so are her assistants. They all really put an effort to make you comfortable without being needy or pushy, and really take care of you there. The front desk is just as professional and welcoming. My last visit I requested a new advanced teeth whitening procedure--one that was not covered as part of my insurance--and they happily informed me on my charges before we got started. I've had the wonderful opportunity to shadow Dr.Cloe Chu. Among the many dentists I've approached, I'm grateful she agreed to let me observe her work at both her offices that had pleasant and welcoming ambiences. I was lucky to learn from Dr.Dorel Onea, and Dr.Wenli Loo at her office as well. While shadowing, I noticed Dr.Chu and her friendly staff understand how every patient is sensitive and make sure they are relaxed, calm and comfortable. Her confident and reassuring demeanor, good conversational skills and genuine interest in the wellness of her patients are some of her key attributes. Her incredibly precise movements and manual dexterity help her to perform intricate procedures with ease for extended periods of time. I believe these qualities can make even the most terrified patient feel at ease. I've also observed that everyone on the office follows strict sterilization procedures. Dr.Chu shows a keen interest in keeping herself up-to-date on the latest innovations in dental technology and incorporates new techniques and equipment into her practice. She is passionate about educating her patients about proper dental care, encouraging good preventive care habits and is committed to helping every patient have a healthy mouth. Dr. Chu has been my dentist for 13+ years now. She was the first dentist to test my guns health, which at the time I thought was pretty cool. She has not only done my cleanings but also whitening's and invisalign braces. She explains all her findings and keeps great records so you can see if you are improving between cleanings. She also has a great staff that is friendly and makes you feel very comfortable during each appointment. She will be my dentist for the foreseeable future. read more

Avoid this doctor period! I used to see her a few years ago. luckily I stopped. She is the worst dentist in this area in my opinion. First of all she ALWAYS charged me extra and I had the best insurance. One time I asked them to send me a discription of why my insurance does not cover the cost and then all of the sudden got back to me that it was their mistake and I don't owe them!! Their business is VERY SHADY. She told me that I need 5 fillings but I after changed my doctor and he told me that I don't have any cavities!!! Bottom line, it appears she does very unnecessary work to charge and she doesn't care. One time she did a bad filling on my tooth so I had to come back the day after from pain. She charged me extra 180$ although it was her fault and just recently the my tooth broke and I had to crown it. Absolutely avoid her read more

WARNING!!! AVOID THIS PRACTICE If I said these "dentists" were a bunch if "B*STARDS" I would be being nice. They are the worst! They not only over charged me on my first visit but they messed up my filling causing me incredible pain for a whole week. After I complained, they asked me to come back so they could fix their mistake. I did but I am still in a lot of pain and it had been several weeks since their "repair" - what did they do to my teeth? After that, these "dentists" sent me an invoice for payment for fixing their original mistake. These people had behaved like charlatans! read more

I'm writing this review for Dr. Monica Wu, the most excellent dentist I have ever witnessed. Sorry Dr. Lai, we love your work as well but Dr. Wu is beyond awesome!!! I took my elderly father to see Dr. Wu today for the first time. He requires a wheelchair and he was having a somewhat emergency issue with his dentures. First off, I was able to re-schedule at the last minute to a Saturday appointment, which was so convenient for me. Secondly, Dr. Wu and her excellent assistant Mei were so kind and helpful in accommodating my father's wheelchair needs. At first we were going to do the exam in his wheelchair, which is no easy task for the dentist. Then both Dr. Wu and Mei offered to lift him up to the examining table as my father was complaining about back pains. As he is very immobile, I thought it would be almost impossible, but the two of them successfully did the transfer and my father was so much more comfortable after that. Kudos to female power!! Dr. Wu modified the dentures to make it much more comfortable for my father and patiently explained to us how to remove his dentures and put it back on as he no longer can do it himself. She even let us practice too. Then she took such care when cleaning his teeth and provided us with many great advice on how to clean and take care of his teeth. When we were finished and getting ready for our Uber wheelchair driver, Dr. Wu patiently waited until the last minute before transferring my father back to his wheelchair so that he could remain in the more comfortable exam chair until the driver came. Never in all my life have I ever seen a dentist who went this beyond as far as caregiving. My mother agreed as well. Dr. Wu - my father, mother and I are so so grateful to you and Mei for the amazing care, compassion and patience you showed us today. Excellent Dentist. Dr. Chu and the staff are very conscientious, professional and have always been respectfull of my time. When there have been issues of scheduling they have always contacted me to reschedule. All the procedures have been explained in detail with recommendations on a course of treatment and if required a referral when it is needed for periodontal work. I have had many different procedures from routine cleaning, fillings, crowns and root canals (when required) and I will have to say that Dr. Chu goes out of her way to make sure you are as comfortable and pain free as possible during the procedure. The long and short of it is that I would highly recommend River Oaks Dental and Pacific Bay Dental for your dental needs. And coming from a very detist adverse person this quite a compliment. read more
