In all candor, I've long held a skeptical view of chiropractic - I recognize that some…read morepractitioners are knowledgeable, but I've also heard too many tales from unhappy people (and a few from my doctors) about dubious treatments and chiropractors with a focus on billing rather than healing. However, having been recommended by no less than six people at my office, I felt more confident about Health Point Chiropractic. I've entered the decade where back problems crop up and experienced a couple of incidents within a single month that resulted in a really painful back. After trying to power through it, I yielded to my work colleagues and made an appointment with Dr Tracy Ivy James. This was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I was able to get the new patient paperwork from their website and complete it in advance, so I was absolutely ready for my first appointment. She reviewed my paperwork, asked several questions and put me through a few gentle movements and confirmed my self diagnosis of a strained back muscle (iliopsoras). Because it had been spasming for several days, I literally had had no pain relief for nearly a week. In this first visit, Dr Tracy used electric pulse (like TENS but better!) and ultrasound wave therapy to release that spasm. The next step was to lie on a waterbed massage table while the jets and rollers in the "mattress" gave me additional relief... then a gentle adjustment and I felt significantly less pain. Seriously - I was able to walk upright for the first time in days. Because a badly strained muscle doesn't heal overnight and because I work in an office (hello uncomfortable chair!), the muscle needs additional work. In subsequent visits, Dr Tracy has given me yoga-like stretches to do (again, gently...nothing that will inflame or do more damage) and continues to help me make progress. Health Point is located in Dunwoody off Mt Vernon Road - the office itself is small, but because it shares the office park with other businesses, there's plenty of parking. They have later hours to accommodate those of us who work for a living. I recommend Dr Tracy to anyone, especially those who may be leery of chiropractic. She will change your mind. As the sign in their office says, "Pain is not a lifestyle".

The vibe you're going to experience is welcoming, friendly, caring, and genuine. After signing up, you will receive x rays to get a starting point of where you're at and areas of concern so she can construct a plan that fits your needs. Usually you go more often in the beginning and then over time it will be maintenance. You'll get a folder with all your information and your posture photo. At the time I went, they had two adjustment tables separated by a divider, a waiting area to do pre adjustment exercises, and then a "relax" room (not the official name for it) after the adjustment. The exercises are good and you feel good doing them. There's a chair to rotate your hips, a traction device, and a vibrating platform. When using the chair, you can definitely feel how good it is to do this move. The traction device is my favorite. I hold all my stress in my shoulders, upper back and neck. That traction device gets the neck tension and feels amazing. I was never instructed to use the vibration platform so it may be that it's only for certain issues. Once you're done doing all those things, they're usually ready for you. Sometimes there may be a wait if others are chatty, so I don't recommend ever going in a rush. The Doc will do certain adjustments but if you have some preferences, just ask and she'll do them. She'll also ask if you have any new issues or something she should focus on. After that she'll use the percussion gun which is also very enjoyable. Last but not least, the lacrosse ball which she'll give at some point in the beginning along with exercises. Do them and use the ball just like she says. Holy moly! The ball....!!! If you have a tense back from stress, that thing will literally melt knots out. I also have a few other gifts she was kind enough to offer me to help with my needs. She really went out of her way to not be a place where you're just a number and I really experienced what a nice person she is.
