Thomas, Ricky and Kevin all went above and beyond today taking care of my car and answering the 100 questions I tossed at them. Even after I paid and received my keys they took extra time to give me advice on maintenance and provided much needed education. This is a bit late this happened in 2025, but I needed time to assess what was going on with the…read morecars. This is more detail for my Dec 22nd, 2025 review. I have 2 cars both were being serviced at Leon's and for regular service I liked them, good customer experience up front. However, I took my 95 Toyota Land Cruiser in with 2 issues a suspected fuel leak (we could smell fuel in the garage when you opened the door) and it was running rough, more so when it was cold. Leon's looked at these problems and said they could not find either one. About the same time I took my 2001 Subaru Outback to them about an overheating problem and the guy from the shop came back with a big list of repairs to fix the problem even though I told him this car was a car I was not going to pay lots of money to repair. So with no solution for either car I looked for and found a shop in Arcata. The Land Cruiser went in first. On the first day he dropped the fuel tank and found that the line to the emergency break had worn a hole in the top of the fuel tank and it was leaking. He fixed it and looked for the other problem, it took him a bit longer but not much and he found the number 5 spark plug cable was periodically arcing to the exhaust pipes. So here is the significance of that, Leon's let me drive the car out of there shop with an active fuel leek and an active ignition source should the fuel get close to it. I was not pleased. Then I took the Subaru to the same shop in Arcata and in less than a day he said he found the connector to one of the fans that go on when the radiator gets too hot was not securely connected. Infer what you want from this but one thing is for sure Leon's should have caught the loose connector. Both cars now seem to be running just fine. So why did I not rate them a 1? Well initially I rated them much higher. When I came here for oil changes and tuneups the customer service at the front desk was great and this is where most auto repair shops drop the ball. I assumed that the work in the back followed the same pattern, but this turned out to be a bad assumption. So they could be good for regular maintenance, but I would not go there for anything tricky.

Wayne is awesome. I…read morecame here after first stopping by Antich Automotive. The guys at Antich were busy, I understand that, but they were rude and would hardly speak to me. When I stopped in at Wayne's he was extremely busy too, but he was friendly and took the time to make sure I had all my questions answered. He even answered a couple of my calls after-hours when I came up with more questions. It was painfully obvious that I know very little about cars, but Wayne was very helpful and answered everything without any hint of condescension. Whereas most mechanics I've been to tend to say, "Well, that part does [insert unintelligible mechanic-language here]." Since I have no idea how much most parts tend to cost, I went to Google to compare his estimate with prices I could find. Turns out, he's actually quite reasonable! Another thumbs up for Wayne. I went back in a couple of days later to see how things were going on my vehicle. (There were multiple jobs ahead of mine, and due to safety concerns with the car, I just left it at Wayne's.) Wayne and I started talking, turns out he's a really cool, honest guy. There were several things I wanted to have done where he would say, "I could do that for you, but I don't really do a lot of that here. [Insert Name] down the street could do that for less and probably do a better job." What? I don't think I've ever heard a mechanic say that. Last I checked, most people would go ahead and do the requested task without saying "So-and-so down the street would do that for less." Fantastic service!

Aaron knows his stuff, he took the problems that Leon's said they could not find and was able do diagnose and fix both cars in a short time period. What was real cool is I used to do my own auto work 20+years ago and where Leon's would not go into details (perhaps they though it was over my head), Aaron would tell me details and it was clear he knew what was going on, he knew what to look for and how to read the clues. I must admit I was hesitant to write this review because you already have to book him a month in advance and if too many people read this I might be looking at a 2 month in advance lead time. Right now this is my car guy.

Well, my Honda Element fell victim to a recent Catalytic Convert theft and it was not a great way…read moreto start an early day and being a very long way from home. Very long story short - a recent trip down to the city on business, got up the next morning to start the car with a most unbelievable noise... wth?!? sure as shit, look under the car and the damn thing has been literally ripped out from under the vehicle with what appears to have been a sawsall... seriously - I mean in a gated secured parking lot, under lights and cameras and in less than tweleve hours total of when I arrived, gone. And its 350 miles from home... So, you can drive it but there is basically no muffler attached so its hella loud and it effects performance, gas mileage and a whole slew of other things limping the assaulted ride home. Once home, now what? Arcata Muffler did a great job during a bad situation. Repairing the damage, being very professional in a stressful situation. Not only did they work with my insurance to get it done correctly, they also installed a security cage (steel boxes) around the new expensive installed component. The owner wasn't happy with the security "cage" as it was designed, as it still allowed an intruder some access to the convert - so much so that he spent an extra half a day "hardening the target" for me to make it near impossible to get a clear line of access to the part. Never did I ever think I would fall victim to this type of vandelism but I did. I am really glad I kept full coverage on my old Element and it was more of a pain in the ass (only 250 bucks for my deduct) than a very expensive ($3k) pain... and I am really appreciative of Arcata Muffler for going above and beyond to make it damn near impossible to happen again, as once is more than enough. 4.5 Stars - rounded up for building a fort around my catalytic convert... 00730

So my visit was actually a few months ago so something might have changed since then so forgive me if I am wrong since then for the following comment: Now as a small business that is dedicated to the work I can understand other aspects of running a business may slip away but the only thing I would comment not so positively on would be the office cleanliness. Please hire a cleaning service for the office...it was pretty gross like it had not been cleaned in three years. I did not want to even sit in the chair! other than that ignore the mess and go with the guys who can do it best!
