Compo Beach is located in Westport, Connecticut. I was invited to this beach for their annual Fourth of July celebration, which consisted of an awesome fireworks display. The beach is nice and clean. They have a concession building that serves many desirable beach day food options, like hot dogs, burgers, chicken fingers, ice cream, etc. It's nice to have a place to eat without having to leave the beach. Nice plus for me. There are indoor bathrooms that are very clean which is also a nice plus. They have volleyball nets, a playground, places where you can grill out and more. Great for the whole family. This beach is located in a nice suburban neighborhood so the surrounding area is nice as well. I really enjoyed myself and hope to be back one day. read more

If I could rate this lower than one star, I absolutely would. My husband tried to take my family out for a lovely day at the beach playground. The parking pass is $75. The town gives you absolutely zero other options to pay unless you're a resident even to pay to park at a reasonable price farther away there's no option then we decided I would drop the kids off with my husband and they would play and some lady who's an absolute Cunt yelled at my family for taking our dog to the beach you can't take a dog to the beach. Westport parks department believes they own the Long Island sound. I live on land town (not Weston) tried to purchase a pass at exactly 9 am on the day non resident passes were "supposed" to be sold. None were available. Tried to contact them, would hang up on me and did not even want to discuss. All they want to do is keep people away with their $70 dollar fee out of the beach. Tried contacting their assembly woman's office no response. They lie that they have passes available, but really don't sell them. I know other people in town of Ridgefield who tried to buy and logged on at 9 am to buy it and none were available. read more

Came here after dinner for a lovely stroll along the beach. The view is simply breathtaking especially at night because of the sunset reflecting on the ocean. Pretty romantic spot for all ages and a lot of things happening on the beach where people set up tents, BBQs, or just lounging around. The beach needs to really maintain the bathroom because the walkway to the bathroom had poop and also on the bathroom floor which makes me nausea. read more

But the 2018 season they f*** everything up, they raised prices around 35% both daily and season with ONLY ONE TIME ENTRY, they making you park one mile away in a gravel lot, even though a big parking that is close to the water stays empty all the time, they don't let you use it anymore, this is just simply discrimination to people that don't live in wesport town, in one word they're telling you get the hell out of here THIS IS OUR BEACH !! Compo Beach - Beaches Near Me - Westport, Connecticut

This is the largest and most-frequented beach in Westport, but aesthetically speaking, it lags behind the others. It does have more accommodations and adjacent activities, but the crowds on warm days can be an issue. As a general rule you don't want to go swimming or engage in other in-water activities in this part of Connecticut--go at least as far north as Hammonasset for that. Views are good from here, I've seen plenty of great sunsets and even a few sunrises from here, but they are better from Burying Hill Beach (5 stars). Historically, this is probably the most important site in Westport. More important than the place where J.D. Salinger wrote "Catcher in the Rye" (no one seems sure where that is), probably more important even than the Wright Street office building where the hedge fund was invented. Cannons by the jetty commemorate the Battle of Compo Beach, fought during the Revolutionary War. read more

I will never get tired of this place. Yes, it's the long island sound, but I love this beach as I've grown up in the area for every other reason that the ice cold water and rocky sand. I bring everyone from out of town here and they love it. Even if it's picking up sandwiches and bringing them here to eat and then walking the getty. First of all, this beach always had the coolest playground. They rebuilt it since I was a kid but it's still a very special unique and crazy awesome playground. There are basketball courts baseball field and half pipes also. Very family friendly. The concession stand, Joeys, has upped their game with dinner and lunch foods! Snacks and ice creams. And the pavilion is right next door offering shade and a breeze. If you continue down that way there are canons on the corner. We loved to climb up them as kids and have photos sitting on them. Turn right and you'll see tons of picnics benches and grills. My family loves having dinner at compo in the summer, get the before 5 on Angeles night to get a spot and good luck on the weekends. Past there are the boats which are fun to walk through and look at. All the way at the other end of the beach is where I love to go on walks and you'll pass many jobbers bikers and moms with strollers in the morning. It's a beautiful walk that I usually end when I hit El Viras and get myself an iced coffee or breakfast wrap. Tips: you can bring alc and drinks but no glass. Go before 5 if you want a picnick table. Wonderful beach any time of year. In the summer, enjoy the sand and water. In the spring and autumn, enjoy the playground, skate park, and soccer field. In the winter, just walking up and down the seashore searching for sea glass is fun. I will note that the children's playground is extensive and awesome. Note to high schoolers - it's a great place to make out at night. Just sayin'. During the SUMMER only, if you're not a Westport resident, the admission fee is very expensive. If you are a resident (or know someone who is), a parking pass is the way to go. I can understand charging for parking, but I really can't understand charging for beach access. Oh, well. There are plenty of other places to hang out by the shore (albeit without sand). Off-season, the beach and parking are free to all! Still, because it's the best beach in Fairfield County, it gets five stars. read more

We are NY residents and have been coming to Westport for the past 8 years. So far we were paying the 50$ entrance fee without too much second thoughts because we felt it was worth it. The last 2 times we have been visiting Compo beach, we have been EXTREMELY disappointed. The fee went up to 65$ and basically the general feeling we got is that we were barely TOLERATED as non residents. The rude and austere women who had us pay at the entrance, gave us the "order" to Park in the "parking lot with gravels" really far away from the entrance and told us "don't park anywhere else or you will get a ticket" Then the sand and the water were really dirty. There were papers and food scattered all over the sand and the water was filled with various garbage I was so upset to have been treated like "unwanted" on such a dirty beach at such a high price. Compo beach is one of the best. Clean, lots of beach and a great newly updated snack bar. One star off for their ridiculous parking fee but that's somewhat easy to avoid if you don't mind a walk or bike ride away. The snack bar is actually beautiful. Brand new, lots of food and ice cream options. Plus they sell gear and sunscreen if you forget yours at home. Great area to eat under the shade with picnic benches. Somewhat okay bathrooms (for a beach) and outdoor showers for those wanting to cool off but would never set foot in nasty LIS. Overall a very nice beach and one of the best in the area. read more

I like Compo, although I think of it much more as a "bay beach" than a full-on, honest to goodness beach. Why? No waves and pretty slim beach. It can get crowded during all the typical crowded times. Still, the sand is nice sand, and the snack bar is pretty good (though expensive). Anyway, pretty great. I always have a resident pass, so cost isn't a concern for me. read more

I'd give the beach a 5 star review but the gate keeper was really super rude. Before I even suggested that I wasn't staying I just asked if it was $30 for parking year round and she said "yes so if you want something free you should go somewhere else!" I ignored her and asked her about the yearly passes and was told "they were all sold out." I said okay well we are going to stay. And she said "okay then go around and pull in the correct spot.." No one was around and I was with my 2 small daughters and no one was behind me but I did what she asked and then came around (the small circle while she laughed) and went almost into the "wrong" one again and she yelled "nope don't back up keep trying until you get it right!" Again no one had come through yet so I gave her my money and she said "you finally got it!" What is this woman doing in a county/town position??? It was completely inappropriate and I've been coming here since 2005 and never had any sort of treatment like this.. The beach is kept beautiful and as is the town.. She should not be the face of this beautiful destination or in any position the represents Westport. read more

Compo Beach is a beautiful place. We're from Southern California, the home of wide, long, sandy beaches. Unfortunately, Compo doesn't compare in terms of size and width, but it is really the best beach we saw so far in CT. It's very pretty and has a decent amount of sand. Another thing we learned to appreciate about our state CA, is that the entire coastline is public and free. Not so much over here... before May 1st, Compo beach access is free, and after that, it's something like $20 to access and $20 to park, for people who don't have a sticker saying they reside in Westport CT... All I can say about that is: WTH, that's outrageous! One tip is to drive along the beach road til you hit a spot along the side where parking is free on the side of the road... it is limited to like 5 cars or so. read more

This beach is nice and clean for anyone looking for one in the Fairfield County Area. However, there is a limited day pass system in effect, so it is wise to come early and prepare backup plan. If you are coming from outside of the Westport area, be prepared. Your day may depend on it. Day Pass Information: There are a limited number of non-resident day passes sold in order to use the town parking lots. $65 Weekends/Holidays and $40 Weekdays. If you buy a pass, you will be sent to a gravel lot that is not near the main beach, so expect to lug your gear for 500-1000 feet. They can sell no more than 100 passes, on a first come, first serve basis. It does not matter if people leave. It is completely possible to drop people off at the beach and park somewhere else if need be, however, there are no other parking lots for about 3 miles from the beach, and street parking will quickly get your car towed. When you buy the pass, you can not leave and then come back in, so make sure you have everything the first time. If you do not listen and fail to park in the designated lot, you will get an additional $75 ticket from the cops that make rounds every hour or so. Day Pass Timing: I don't like giving a set time for when these passes sell out because of how unpredictable people are, but I'll attempt to give you an idea when they do, and take it with a grain of salt. Worst case scenario, you have to choose one of my backup plans below. I have seen passes sell out as early as 12 pm on a busy weekend, to not selling out until 5 pm (or not at all) on an off-day weekday. If you Backup Plan: 1) Sherwood Island State Park (9 minutes away) is a state park beach that is free for CT residents and $22 for out-of-state residents. It has plenty of parking, walking trails and multiple beaches to choose from, but no playground. It is fairly rocky in most areas, and also tends to have a high abundance of geese on the main beach area. 2) Calf Pasture Beach (20 minutes away) is Norwalk's town beach. Day pass prices are about $30. It has playground and other facilities, but is mostly rocky. 3) Penfield/Jennings Beach (25 minutes away) is Fairfield's town beach. Day pass prices are $50/weekends, I don't know if there is a limit, parking can get limited for Penfield fast. The beach is somewhat rocky, but has a brand new pavilion and facilities, and does have a playground near both beaches. Pros: Given what I've said with the steep price and other options in the area, why come to Compo? What you're paying for is 4 things. First of all, less rocks. Compo beach is noticeably less rocky than the other surrounding beaches. I'd still wear shoes if going underwater, but you'll be able to walk barefoot near the water's edge with few problems. Secondly, less geese during the summer months. Geese feces are everywhere in most of the coastal beaches and parks. Westport recently had a similar problem, but has been able to hire services to scare them off, something that Sherwood Island State Park doesn't do. I haven't seen too many at Fairfield beaches due to the layout of the beaches, but have seen plenty at Norwalk's. Third of all, it is sort of a filter. There's going to be less people, less loud music, less trash. It's not perfect, but there's a better employee to guest ratio in order to make sure rules are followed and stuff is cleaned up. Finally, it's the facilities. For example, the newly renovated pavilion seating or bathrooms. Even the playground is fairly nicer and larger compared to other beaches in the region. If you have kids, great. If you don't, I guess you can try the tire swing if that's your kind of thing. Cons: There is only one source of food in the area, a snack bar called Joey's by the Shore. They tend to be slightly overpriced, with prices fairly typical of a beach concessions stand, but the food is fairly decent overall. Drinks can push $2 or $3 each at times though. There is a family owned deli up the road, but its about a .75 mile walk one way, and prices are only slightly lower. Also, waves are almost non existent, and water is fairly stagnant at some times. If you want waves don't go to Long Island Sound, go to the south side of Long Island (Jones Beach or Fire Island). If you just want some casual lounging or BBQ while your kids play, this is probably good enough. There are also no dogs or glass allowed, so don't bring them. Conclusion: I'd recommend maybe making Compo beach your first choice if you absolutely have to go to a Fairfield County beach, but I would also take a look at the other options in the surrounding area. Regardless, have a backup plan ready because of the unpredictable parking situation and unavailability of other areas to park. If you want to swim, I'd skip Long Island Sound altogether and just go to Jones Beach or Fire Island. If you just want to relax with friends and family, here's good enough. (Note: All of this information is valid as of early August 2018, and could change in the future) read more

Beautiful beach! We live one mile down the road, and it's such a wonderful place to go and relax in the summertime. The good news is, they don't allow anyone to play music on a radio -- only iPods, etc are allowed. And the high fees for non-residents keep too many people from going, which would lead to an overcrowded beach. The bad news is, there are a lot of people who drop their families off, then park far away and walk. Generally, these have been the few and far between families I've literally seen SPIT on the beach and leave garbage. NOBODY does that at Compo, and to see it is an absolute travesty......people who behave in that manner clearly do NOT value where they are, and therefore shouldn't be allowed in (whether they paid for parking, are a Resident, or were dropped-off). read more

it's a beach for rich white people, so it has a very high fee and tremendous facilities--great snack bar, showers, often free books from the library (yes really!), lovely lawns and playgrounds...everything but beer. good for families with kids. beach is rocky near the water so if you like to swim, hi tide is very much better. since it's the LI Sound, warmish salty water and few waves. not a huge, wide ocean beach but very mellow and relaxing. read more

Compo beach is a great place, people are upset because they made rule changes this year. I watched a New Yorker berate the poor gate lady while she was just trying to explain the new rules and parking lot. The people that pay feel they are entitled to everything including calling the gate lady a few swears because she didn't want them to pay for a day pass then get a parking fee. Same New Yorkers sat by the gate and had loud music and left two bags of trash with a dead fish in them. While their kids ran around naked The employees that work there are nice and they don't make the rules, they just try to enforce them. I've watched them stand in 95 degree weather while Westport residents hassle them because they feel entitled to come in without their stickers then the people who buy passes decide since they are paying even more they will crap on the employees too! Seems like people just don't like to follow the rules, if you go down to Calf Pasture and cause trouble the police are there continually....maybe Westport should keep police at the gate 24/7. Great views along with friendly people. Concession bar exceeds all expectations. However, the bathrooms need up keeping. For the cost of entrance for non CT residence ($50), you would think they would have more then two stalls with more then one working sink. Great marina for jet skiing and boating. read more
